Laptop stolen, saved music luckily on x-hd, anyway to recover my playlists, laptop stolen, saved music luckily on x-hd, anyway to recover my playlists
my laptop got stolen the other day, but luckily they removed my x-hd and left it behind (thiefs with a concicous) which had all my iTunes library saved on it. so im glad i still got all my music but the problem is i had a lot of playlists and i mean A LOT!!! now i havent got a new computer just yet, my question is will i be able to recover them? i got a feeling that i should have saved them before and make back ups of them... i hope someone can tell me that im wrong because it means a lot of years, work and time have just gotten flushed down the drain, i do have an ipod classic which has a lot of these playlists saved on them but im afraid im not gonna be to extract it from there... anyone got any life saving ideas?
*Is there a way to make my iTunes music folder be on the WD ext HD, even though iTunes isn't installed on that HD?*

*i am confused as to the difference between a Library and a Playlist. There is only one "Library", right? There are multiple playlist*
The library is everything you have in iTunes, a playlist is just a series of links to items that are in the library. A song or movie can appear once in the library but can be linked to many different playlists.
*Why should i have to keep files i already have on the Touch/ATV in my playlist/Library?*
Your library is your backup so that if anything happens to your iPod for instance and you have to restore it to correct a problem you still have the original files to put back on.

Please help, I don't want to lose my pictures or music!
Music purchased from the iTuens store can be transferred using iTunes. However, music from other sources can only be transferred from your phone using 3rd party software such as PhoneView (mac) or Touch Copy (pc or mac). These articles will show you how to start syncing with your new computer with minimal or no data loss:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive

My Laptop was stolen. On the Itunes, I had many songs saved from other sources, that are currently on my Itouch. Itunes wants me to Erase to sync, and I dont want to erase. I have no access to those songs anymore. Is there a way to sync my Touch with my New laptop withoit erasing my I touch?
Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your iPod. Only if you back up your iPod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your ipod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your device for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

Identity theft - someone is using my stolen laptop to purchase iTunes music
My macbook was stolen from my home August 25th, 2007. Since then I have reported it to local law enforcement... whole lot of good that did. Anywho, looking at my bank statement the other night, I saw that whoever is in posession of my laptop now (surely, not the same person who actually took it) has purchased nearly $250 of music using my saved account information. I have of course contacted my bank and changed my password.
My question is this: the police aren't going to do squat to get laptop back or find out who stole it, so the detective work seems to rest mostly on me. This iTunes thing is the best lead I have. Is there a way I can find out the IP address/location of where this music was purchased from? I'm certain Apple keeps this information - they are a business, after all - but I have found no way of speaking with a representative in person, everything is pointing me towards "web help," which is a pretty terrible approach in my opinion. The only phone number I found forwarded me to an automated message telling me to seek help online. How can I contact Apple, or find this information myself, so I can bring it to the police and get my stolen property back?[email protected] wrote:

I doubt it. THe sheer number of purchases that happen on a day to day basis (no rater a minute by minute basis) would make it impossible to find that out. You are better off canceling your credit card and inform them of the fraudulent purchases so they cannot make any more purchases and you are not held liable for them. If the I doubt that Apple will contact you on this matter since that matter requires legal intervention - if they even bother.
I would more aggressively pursue this with the Police, since they are the best resource they have.
I would doubt the guy who robed you would be purchasing tunes at his own home anyway if it is a laptop. Most likley he is doing it on other places. -

I have two apple id's one from my old laptop and one from my iPhone. I saved my iTunes library to my external hard drive right before my old mac laptop died and then tried to transfer it to my new iMac. Now when I try to play my old music it skips like a scratched cd. Also, now I can't add any music to my iPhone unless it was purchased recently through itunes and downloaded through icloud. I tried to "Organize" my library in hopes of correcting the problem but my iMac just ejects my external harddrive part way through. Please help!
Ejects the harddrive?
Of what did your old Mac die?
It sounds to me like you have some file corruption somewhere. Either in the transfer of your library to the external or the external itself is flaky if it keeps ejecting. -
I have a macbook pro, and the hard disc recently crashed. I lost everthing, but luckily i have my music saved on my ipod nano. How can I now transfer my music from my nano to my mac for free?
Hi there ovadia!
You can transfer the music purchased by your iTunes account from your iPod nano to your MacBook Pro by following the steps outlined in this article:

Why would you set up a new account?
Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.
Its wrong to assume that everyone has a backup copy.

Hey Everyone,
My apartment was broken into and my laptop was stolen which had my entire iTunes library. I have it all on my iPod Classic now which was with me at the time.
What do you suggest as the best tool to transfer the music FROM my iPod to to my new computer? I know there are some programs out there, what have you had success with?
My most important question is, is there a way to retain my library and especially playlists as it is (instead of copying over a massive bunch of songs)? Most of my music is from music blogs, mixtapes and underground artists so most of it cannot be found in the iTunes store.
Thanks for any help guys!

My music files etc were all located on my old laptop which was stolen. I have just plugged my iphone in to my new computer and it has deleted all my files. Has anybody got any ideas on how to retrieve the files?
WINDOWS?
Connect the iPod to your PC. If iTunes starts syncing (ie erasing) your music automatically, hit the X in the upper right hand corner of iTunes display, to the left of the search box, to stop it.
In Control Panel, Portable Media Devices, double-click your iPod.
In the Tools menu -> Options, in the View Tab, check "Show hidden files and folders."
Navigate to the Music folder. On my 'pod, the full path is
Portable Media Devices\NAME of IPOD (F:)\iPod_Control\Music
Select all the music folders, and drag and drop them into a folder on your hard drive, or directly into iTunes.
And you're done! The iPod music folder structure is strange and inexplicable, but once you move your files into iTunes you can set it to automatically organize your folder by artist and album to clean that up. (To do this, in iTunes Edit menu, choose Preferences and in the Advanced tab, check "Keep iTunes Music Folder organized."
