Laptop switches to 40hz refresh rate when i remove AC power

This problem started today,Everytime i remove the ac power;A black screen comes momentarily and the screen which i was working on comes back, but this time the animations are kinda sluggish so i checked the advanced settings for display and found out that every time i remove the ac power it switches to 40Hz refresh rate and when i switch it back to 60Hz and then i plug in,it  stays 60 but when i plug out it reverts to 40Hz.What bothers me is that this problem never came until today.

Hey erik,
I really do appreciate your input.  That's a good idea, though honestly I don't know if I will bother with all of that now. :-)  Perhaps instead if I get a moment in the near future I may try wiping out all Intel graphics drivers entirely from the system manually and then reinstalling.
Having said all of that, on a somewhat unrelated note, I'm getting 4,900+ in 3DMark06, which is shocking!  After experiencing the trouble with the unplug/replug refresh rate switch, I tried a wide variety of solutions including using the 2361 graphics drivers from Intel's site.  This plus my high-speed fan settings at anything over 60C probably helped contribute to the score I guess.
But back to the topic... is anyone else experiencing these same refresh rate switching issues?

  • X220 uncontrollably switches to 50Hz refresh rate upon unplug from power source

    Hello,
I'd like to reiterate that I LOVE my x220 apart from the few issues I have with it.  Having said that, I am having the (seemingly) ubiquitous problem where the laptop constantly switches to 50Hz when unplugged from a power source.  I have tried reinstalling the Power Manager and Power Manager driver, and all of my system software is up to date.
Just to be certain, is everyone else experiencing this issue as well?  I know T420s owners recently reported it and it was subsequently forwarded to engineering.  As long as a fix is in the works I am happy. :-)

  • My laptop turns off when i remove the power cord

I have a Pavilion dv7-6c27cl running windows 7 (64 bit). Everytime I remove my laptop from the power cord, it shuts down immdiently. The battery says that it is at 77% and charging. I don't know what wrong at all. The light on the side is orange. Ideas on what's wrong and how to fix it?

It has to be a battery problem....I am getting that it just sits at 77% and never goes higher or lower? If you are still in warranty, the battery is covered (up to 1 year, I think), and if not you need to buy yourself a new battery. If by some chance you could try another known good battery that would be helpful but that seems unlikely.

  • My macbook will not charge and turns off completely when I remove the power cable.  can anyone help?

The battery is sitting at 75% and has not moved even though it is plugged into the mains.  It will not switch on unless connected to the power cable and turns straight off when disconnected.  The wee green light is on the cable is on when plugged in so its not the power cable.  Could it be my battery?  the I only bought this two years ago.
    Please help.

You posted your question in the "Intel iMac Forum".  You should repost it in the appropriate "MacBook Forum" in order to get an accurate response.

  • New Macbook Pro 15 -when i remove the power charger the computer shuts down

    Hello,
I just bought my new macbook pro 15 inch from my campus store (first mac- finally converted from pc) and i was loving it.
Then it randomly shut down. so i try to turn it back on... no response. so i plug in the charger and boots up so i forgot about it but then when i took the charger out it shuts down again. and when the charger is in the battery status is saying that its not charging. Anyone have any ideas??
    Thanks,

Reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and re-calibrate the Battery then if it keeps doing the same thing call Apple and make an appointment for them to take a look at it.

  • Sony KDL32W4000 - missing bits on overscan; blurry; refresh rate

I've connected the mini to the TV (which is a full 1920x1080 HD set) - using mini-DVI to DVI-D to HDMI.
When in overscan I'm missing the edges of the screen - the menu bar at the top is outside the physical border of the screen but is usable (ie I can use the mouse in the border of the screen but can't see either the mouse or the top line of the menu). When it's not in overscan I'm using about three quarters of the screen.
Is there a way to make it fit the screen within the physical borders of the set (ie using overscan but keeping the borders of the screen within the physical boundaries of the set - or turning overscan off but expanding the screen out to the boundaries of the set).
It is, I think, a 100hz set but in display options I'm only seeing 60hz - is there a way to increase the refresh rate when used by the mini?
The screen fonts are also a bit blurry - any tips on who to improve visual acuity?
I haven't upgraded to 10.5.7 at this stage due to the problems people have been having with it - will do so once I do a time machine backup of the current setup.
    Thanks.

Answering my own questions again - you get the full screen filled out to (but not past) the borders of the set if you set the display area to full pixel rather than "normal" (press Home on the remote then navigate using XMB to settings) and then on the Mini set the Mini's display prefs to overscan. The full pixel setting only affects the TV when it is getting a signal from the pc and doesn't apply when it is used as a TV (so no need to reset it when you want to use the TV as a telly). The font still isn't amazing but this may be due to me sitting further back than I'm used to.

  • MacBook Air and Pro buzz when connected to French Power

My MacBook Air and Pro laptops buzz in a pronounced way when plugged into French power sources (Martinique, Paris, Aix-en-Provence).  They are American computers, and I use the adapters from the Apple World Traveler kit.  Sometimes I use a regular wall adapter when I want to use the extension cord, as World Traveler doesn't allow this.  The computers work fine, but I'm in French territory a lot and I worry that the buzz, which only happens when the computers are plugged in, is doing some long-term damage.  I feel the buzz the most when touching the computers very lighly.  Thanks~

Sounds like your adapter is not earthing properly? Change it ASAP.
Might be worth picking up a pukka French power supply if you are over here a lot too.

  • In iOS 7, apps refresh themselves when switching back to them

I often work with one app and switch to another app, then return to the original.  After upgrading to iOS 7, it seems that apps (or web pages in Safari) now sometimes refresh or reload themselves when I switch back to them rather than simply presenting me with what I had before.  It's not a behavior I like. For instance, say I'm looking at a photo in my photo app Photo Manager Pro.  I switch to another app, then when I come back, Photo Manager Pro seems to reload itself and starts all over at its splash screen, so it takes extra tapping to get back to the picture I was looking at.  And Safari sometimes refreshes web pages when you return to Safari from another app.
It seems to happen sometimes but not others, and I can't figture out the pattern.
I don't think this has to do with the "Background App Refresh" feature as none of these auto-refreshing apps are in the apps list under Settings -> General --> Background App Refresh.
Any help in figuring out what's going on?

This is a problem many and probably all are having with iOS7 "Multitasking."
Here is probably the largest and most helpful thread about it, but it doesn't fix anything: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24582055#24582055

    Hi...
    Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts
    Control-F4
Move focus to the active (or next) window
    Shift-Control-F4
Move focus to the previously active window
By the way...  since you are new to Mac, click a clear space on your Desktop. You should see "Finder" top left corner of the screen in the menu bar.
Click Help then click Help Center
As an example type in    keyboard shortcuts
You can use the Help menu for almost any application on your Mac.

  • Dynadock can only display 1280x1024 at 60 Hertz refresh rate

    Hello.
I just installed my dynadock (VGA).
    I run Vista Home Premium.
I have set up three displays:
    1) the laptop;
    2) VGA monitor connected to laptop;
    3) VGA monitor connected to dynadock.
I downloaded the latest dynadock drivers from Toshiba's website and installed.
Everything is working extending my desktop to the two additional monitors ...
... except that when I set the Dynadock's display to 1280x1024 at true color (32 bit), the best refresh rate it'll allow me is 60 hz!
The laptop is Toshiba Satellite P205D-S6454.
The two monitors are both 19" 109P40's
The display is going through a Starview SV221DD KVM switch.
I have also downloaded and tried the latest drivers from Displaylink (who it seems makes the display adapter in the Dynadock, and has some newer drivers than what's included in the latest Dynadock drivers) with the same results.
Is this normal, or should it be able to give me better than 60 hz at 1280x1024x32bpp?
    Thanks
    Sean

    Hi there,
I checked the specs on this website and it seems that the dynadock is only able to display 1280x1024 32Bit 60Hz max.

    Thanks.

I upped the log verbosity on Xorg and checked the Xorg.0.log file. I found some interesting things.
    First, I found this line:
(II) I810(0): Will use BIOS call 0x5f05 to set refresh rates for CRTs.
    Later on, I found these:
(WW) I810(0): Extended BIOS function 0x5f05 not supported.
(II) I810(0): BIOS call 0x5f05 not supported, setting refresh with VBE 3 method.
(WW) I810(0): Set VBE Mode rejected this modeline.
    Trying standard mode instead!
Presumably, "standard mode" is an eye-watering 60Hz.
This is on a Dell Optiplex GX260 with BIOS revision A09. The video chipset is an onboard Intel 82845 and the driver is Xorg's i810.
Everything works fine with Sun's X server. I get a nice 87Hz refresh at 1024x768. I'm surprised that Xorg can't set the refresh on this machine. It's listed as Test Suite Level 2 certified in the HCL. Unless somebody can tell me what I'm doing wrong here, I'm going to post this incompatibility as a comment on the HCL.
