Laptop T61 DVD/CD drive problems

My TP T61 does not recoginze many DVDs or CD (Software, data and music CDs)
and it recognizes them a "blank" DVDs or CDs.
I purchased the laptop last December and it has  Vista business Operating
System.
I think it is a hardware problem but I am not sure since VIsa has so many
problems.
I appreciate help

hbdamas, welcome to the forum,
The first thing I always do when I think an optical drive may be defective is to remove it and then re-seat it. Sometimes during transport they get "vibrated" loose, I've also seen this with hard drives. This may not be totally relevant in your case as it recognises the media as empty, it's worth a try as it is very little effort.
The second thing I do is to try to boot from the drive: Press F12 at start up and you will be presented with a boot menu, select the dvd drive with the cursor keys, open the drive and place a known bootable cd in it and hit the enter button. Keep an eye on the display in case you get a message saying "to start from cd press any key" in which case do exactly that. If it boots from the cd then the problem maybe system / software related, if it doesn't, give service a call as wjli2 suggested.
EDIT: grammar

  • Powerbook G4 12" 867mhz with dvd/cd drive problems - please help!

    Hello all,
Just realized this thread should have been in this section. I put it in the using your powerbook section. Sorry for the double post. I just wanted it to be in the right section.
I have just inherited a powerbook g4 from a family member who is upgrading to a new machine. It has dvd/cd drive problems. I'm totally new to OSX and a notebook machine and need some assistance. I've been briefly scanning the forums here and noticed problems with these drives on the model computer. Is there a way to fix this with an install of older software? Here is the problem, if I insert a cd into the super drive it mounts on the desktop, and itunes will play it but it skips and sounds very distorted. I haven't tried a dvd but was told it doesn't even see the dvds on the desktop. Here are the know specs on the machine:
    867mhz
    640 mb ram
    mac os x 10.5.1
    boot rom version 4.5.5f4
the burner info: matshita dvd r uj-015
    firmware version: docb
    Thanks in advance!

    Good Morning Mac,
According to your posted specs for the 12" G4PB you have the bare minimum requirements for Leopard. Even Tiger (10.4.11) should have 1GB RAM for decent performance (see my signature specs).
An easily installed 1GB RAM stick can be obtained at either of these reliable vendors:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/ or http://www.crucial.com/
However, we are getting ahead of ourselves. Try the following in this order:
Repair Disk Permissions with /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility/Repair DP, then do the following:
Run Repair HD from original CD or DVD install disk ........
Insert disk and re-start holding down the 'C' key until you see the spinning gear.
At Installer level...... DO NOT CONTINUE
At top left, use 'Utilities' Menu for Tiger or later and go 'Disk Utility'
Select your HD volume with Operating system on...
Select First Aid tab then select Repair Hard Disk button
If "RED" errors are repaired, run again, until none are reported then +run again+ just to be sure you are OK
Do NOT continue with the Installer... QUIT the Installer and return to the Finder ......... Eject the Disc
RESTART ..... Repair Disk Permissions .... AGAIN!
Try the above stuff first .... if that doesn't help, we will get into the "RESETS" steps next!

  • DVD super drive problem-does not eject

am facing strange problem with my DVD super drive. It does not eject when idle for some time and when its empty. I have a dual core Mac Pro with snow leapord OS. I have replaced it, updated the OS.. nothing fixes the issue.
it only ejects when I restart the mac pro.
Please help as it does not respond to eject key on keyboard also.
    Thanx in advance.

If nothing else works for you, when you hear sound of drive trying to open after pressing keyboard eject button, strike the box of mac pro on both sides of the drawer with clenched fists.
I have been doing this for years.

  • CD/DVD Optical Drive problems

I've had lots of problems with my CD/DVD optical drive. Took it to the Genius Bar last month and had it replaced under warranty. Has worked fine with DVDs since. NOW, however, I have a CD in the drive -- stuck -- not registering on the desktop and inaccessible.
    1) Any suggestions how to get it out? (Why not the good old days of Apple when a bent paper clip was the ultimate tool?) I've tried Shutting Down, Restarting, with and without Command key down. Nothing ejects it.
    2) Any thoughts -- might it be the brand of CD or just a faulty mechanism?
    I'd really appreciate any help!
    Thanks, CLW

Depress the mouse button at startup and it should eject. If that doesn't work, post back for more suggestions.

  • CD-rw/DVD rom drive problem

I am using IBM T43 type 1871 laptop. The problem is with my CD drive. It automatically ejects out  every time it wants to.
The same won't happen if I put some CD in the drive. But the CD won't play properly as the system shows the autoplay often and in "my computer " the drive is shown blank for some time and after the autoplay the CD name would be given...
Is it the problem with software or hardware???
Can it be solved if I buy a new DVD drive or use an external??
Now I've removed the drive in order to evade this problem...
    Please help me???

    Hello,
I am assuming your ThinkPad T43 has a DVD±RW disc drive.  Is that correct?
If so, can it read stamped (manufactured) CDs and DVDs?  If it can, than the problem may be with reading the recordable CDs or DVDs that you are using.  If not, than the problem could be a software one (i.e., related to the operating system) or a hardware one.
If you have a bootable CD or DVD, try configuring the ThinkPad to first boot from the DVD drive, and then attempt to boot from the disc.  If that works, than you are likely dealing with a software problem.  If the ThinkPad doesn't recognize the disc even at bootup, then the problem is likely with the DVD drive and it will need to be replaced.

  • DVD/CD Drive Problem: Works with DVDs, but won't Read CDs

As the title states, my laptop's CD drive will not read CDs (it is a satellite A205 by the way).  The yellow light lights up, it makes noises as if it is trying to read the CD, but just doesn't do it.  It won't show up as a CD being there when I look it up on "computer".  On the other hand, when I put a DVD in, it works no problem.  Anyone have any idea of what I could do?  I've tried uninstalling the driver on device manager and restarting the computer, thus allowing it to reinstall it, and it didn't help.  Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Try cleaning out the drive with compressed air and/or a lens cleaning disk.  This often times helps.
Next try booting to a Linux Live CD or some other Self Booting CD like Memtest.  If it doesn't then you know for sure that the drive itself is defective as you are taking Windows out of the equation.  If it does, then you know it's a Windows problem which will more than likely require restoring the system to it's factory out of box state using the Recovery DIsks to fix.
If the drive works with a Live CD then try going into device manager, uninstall the DVD drive, then reboot the system to have Windows automatically re-install it.  This sometimes helps as well.

These drives do wear out, but can be replaced. OWC sells a replacement drive and has good installation instructions <http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/superdrive/MacBook_13>. You will need some tools and a bit of patience, but you will end up with a new SuperDrive in your MacBook. The model that I have is identified as MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ867PD, and it works fine with all Apple software as well as Toast.

  • A50 DVD-RAM drive problem

    Hi,
when I try to burn into 8x DVD-R, Nero tells it can burn only at 2x. It should normally 4x.
    The drive is Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-820S, FW version 1.0
I think the firmware update should solve this problem, but I cannot find it anywhere.

    Hi Ado,
Did you checked any other DVD-Rs for writing? There could also be a problem with the medium (meantime problem of every DVD Writer manufacturer).

  • DVD/CD drive problems

I really dont use my optical drive all that often, but i have never had any troubles with it until tonight. whats happening is while i was watching a dvd, the disc starts spinning and everything seems fine, the disk spins normally and isnt loud at all, then after about 5-10 minutes you can hear the disk noticeably making some rough noises, and can hear the disk slowing down, this continues until the disk comes to a complete stop, which in turn locks up the computer until i force quit the dvd player.
I've cleaned the disks, restarted the computer, tried other disks, but I'm still getting the same result. has anyone else experienced this problem, and is there anything i can do to fix it..
im willing to try anything, just want the problem fixed.

Try using a different disc brand. I noted that you said you "tried other discs." Unknown if same or different brand. Try cleaning the drive. Sometimes repairing permissions and restarting the computer helps.

  • Dvd disc drive problem

My disk drive was smashed during my travels home for the holidays and has a hard time taking a disc. The opening is slightly pushed in and there is a slight dent (smooshed in area)on the bottom of the laptop about an inch to an inch and a half from the edge. The disc's sound terrible and I stopped it but had a hard time getting disc out. Is there anyway to fix this inexpensively (college kid)? Where would I find a screwdriver to try and get the casing off to take a look at it? Thanks

If you take it to a macstore or any other servicepoint where they know how to work a macbook pro you can ask if they want to try and bend it back into proper working order, this should be enough to fix your issue.

    Hi
I have read on some websites that some 3rd burning applications or DVD copy locks could have a bad influence on reading and burning medias.
But this is a suggestion and not 100% sure if it's your case.
The other possibility is that you drive is dead and only the drive replacement will solve you issue.

  • DVD/CD Drive not working on Satellite L55

I have a Satellite L55 laptop with DVD/CD drive that I've used successfully to burn CDs in the past. Yesterday, I tried to view a DVD given to me by a friend and all it did was click and nothing happened. No error message other than telling me there was no DVD in the drive.
This morning, I put in a CD and same thing happened. You can hear the drive whirr a bit but then there are little repeated clicking noises and nothing. iTunes told me to put in a blank CD (the CD shows as blank in other drives), and if I look at Windows Explorer, it tells me to put in a DVD.
I've taken a quick look at the driver and it tells me that everything is working properly. If I tell Windows (8.1) to update the driver, it tells me it's the latest driver.
As far as I know, nothing has happened physically to the drive, beyond being opened accidentally on occasion when moving the laptop since the open button just happens to be in the right position for that to happen when you lift up the laptop.
Any ideas as to what I can try to do to see if the drive is truly dead before attempting to replace it?
    Thanks,
    Marie

  • DVD/CD drive is not seen by 6460DWU T61 and XP Professional system

    Dear friends,
I have laptop 6460-DWU T61 with XP Professional.
I load systematically all new updates which I receive from Lenovo and one day I saw that my computer cannot see my DVD/CD drive. It disappeared from “My Computer”. I do not know when it was happened. Does Lenovo create problems for his users ?
When I load from “Control panel” “Add hardware Wizard” I saw yellow “!” at HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-U10N and after clicking Next I saw message “Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)”.
After I uninstalled the device using “Device Manager”, rebooted my laptop and installed it again. Nothing was changed. Again yellow “!” at HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-U10N and my computer cannot see my DVD/CD drive.
I tried temporary find other solution and connect DVD/CD drive by USB port. And again problem. My computer cannot see the new drive, yellow “!” at HP DVD Writer 557r USB Device and the same message “Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)”.
Great ! What can I do?!
My big request is how can I fix the problem? May I use the bellow solution?
I intend create the fixcd.reg file described by Mr.JohnWill at
    http://forums.techguy.org/multimedia/528972-itunes-blocks-cd-rom-recognition.html
However I do not know in which directory set the file for sure.
    Can somebody tell me, please?
I appreciate it in advance, thank you.

I'm not entirely sure what the OP's situation is, but this:
"They sold me it without CD to reinstall XP Windows. I do not have CD which I can use to reinstall my Windows.  My computer is preinstalled with the MS Windows® XP OS, but is supplied with a MS® Windows Vista® OS. ... The Windows Vista recovery disc set provided with my computer cannot reinstall the Windows XP OS."
would seem to indicate that the machine was purchased with a Vista license and a pre-installed XP downgrade.  That's how several machines that I was involved with (mine and friends') arrived.
They were shipped with Lenovo XP images installed - including the recovery partition and tools for XP - and a set of Vista factory media as well.
[edit] Small correction:  my T400 had Vista installed and XP media in the box.  The other T400 units had XP installed and Vista media in the box.

  • Help! My T61 suddenly no longer recognizes my DVD-RAM drive!

Today I tried to retrieve some photos from a DVD and then a CD placed into my T61s DVD RAM (Mat**bleep**a UJ-852 ATA) ... and the drive was not recognized by the system.  It was not displayed in the "My Computer" listing.  The drive powered up whenever I insert a disk, but nothing else happened.
    The device properties box says:
"This device cannot start. (Code 10)
"Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."
But when I check, the system replies came back that the proper driver was already installed ... and that there was nothing else out there that was a "solution".
What can solve this sudden problem?
    Many thanks,

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks!  A variation of the latter seems to have worked and restored the DVD-RAM to proper working order:
    1) Disable drive
    2) Uninstall drive
    3) Remove drive
    4) Shutdown
    5) Restart
    6) Insert drive ... system recognized the drive, loaded the drivers and operation has been normal.
Thanks for the tip. (I had disabled and removed/inserted it before, with no success.  But until reading your note, I did not have a shutdown/restart in between.)
