Laptop turns off intermittently

Hi frnds,
I am having Lenovo G550 with  following config:
Intel C2D T6600
3 GB DDR3
Nvidia Geforce 512MB GPU
320 GB HDD
Win 7 Home Premium
My laptop turns off after 20-30min of usage. I am not playing any hardcore games on it. Now I am using my laptop only for browsing and official work . There is no overheating. The heat sink and fan is also free of dust and lint.
I went to the Lenovo Service Centre located at BTM Layout, Banglore. The guy told me there is no problem with the hardware. Its a OS issue. So, he advised me to format it to factory default settings (my laptop came pre-installed with Win 7 Home Premium). I tried that too. But after 15min of successful recovery, it again turned off during third party appliation installation.
Now, I don't know what to do. My ,machine is 3 yrs old and right now I am not in mood to buy a new laptop (atleat for a year).

Hi deepankar143,
Welcome to the Lenovo Community Forums.
Normally, computers will shut down and stay shut down to protect any overheating damage to the processor.   Although you did mention that there is no overheating and that the heat sink and fan is also dust and lint free, we may want to isolate the overheating problem by installing a 3rd party application that will provide you with the system's CPU temperature.
Try installing the program, Core Temp to monitor if the CPU temperature exceeds more than 90 degrees.  This is when the system normally shuts down to protect from further damaging the processor.  If the temperature exceeds more than 90 degrees, and since you mentioned that the heatsink and fan is dust and lint free then this could be due to dried out thermal paste.
The second possible hardware problem that maybe causing the laptop from shutting down could be a problem with the HDD.  Try running HD Tune to check if there could be any problem with the HDD of the computer.
Hope this isolates the problem. Let me know what happens.

  • Laptop turns off after 3-4 seconds

Hi there,  My Laptop turns off after 3-4 seconds of turning in on. When the battery is plugged in or mains lead, the on /off switch does absolutley nothing. When you open the lid however, it turns the laptop on for 3-4 seconds then cuts out. After taking the laptop appart, i have found that the only way to get the laptop to turn on properly is to take out the power switch chip unit strip cable, insert it so it turns on and then remove it quickly. this way the laptoip stays on. if you insert the power unit strip cable, it turns on fine, but if you leave it in, the laptop turns its self off after 3-4 seconds ( as if the power button was held down) Do you think this is a problem with the either, the power button chip unit, the main board, or maybe even the magnet switch in the lid!? i have upodated bios/cleared CMOS, ran all diagnostics, tried everyt combionation of resetting, e.g. hd/ram/cables /power button down for a minute, bat back in power lead back in...etc, everything installed fine and came back 100% ok as if there is no problem, but the power switch is doing nothing!. Please help or let me know if anyone else had this issue, i really need my laptop working. Kind Regards, James Hardy

Does it do it booting in these two modes?
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup).
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • T410 laptop turns off abruptly when running any application

    Hi,
T410 laptop turns off abruptly when running any application. I contacted the technical support, first they suggested me to run some diagnostics for hard disk which failed and so they sent me a new hard disk. Even then I faced the same problem. Again I contacted them and they told that they will change the system board. Today I received the laptop with new system board/updated BIOS.
But still I am facing the same problem. I called the technical support again, they told me to use the latop in two modes ( 1. only battery and 2. only ac adapter) and check whether its happening again or ont. In both the cases I am seeing the same problem.
Laptop is only 5 months old and bought for  $1400........

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Tell us something more about your system, like installed memory size, processor speed, graphics card make and size, HDD size and so forth. Because yours is CTO model hence it's not possible to figure out these things without your telling us about them.
I'm not very expert but I would say it's probably the RAM since system board and HDD have already been replaced or possibly you have got a lemon. But try following suggestions first.
Do you get any sort of error message or Bluescreen? does Event Viewer report something unusual? Event Viewer can be opened by typing it's name in the search field in Windows 7. If you get Bluecreen you can view it via this program:- http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html and let us know what it says.
Also, make a bootable CD of mem86 and run the test on your RAM, mem86 can be downloaded free from:- http://www.memtest86.com/
Lastly, you can burn LiveCD of any Linux distro and boot from it, if applications work fine in Linux environment then probably it's some software problem your thinkpad is having, re-imaging the system to factory state would be great initiative in that case.
    Keep us posted!

  • Laptop turns off unexpectedly

    Hello!
I have an HP Pavilion m6-1045 dx and my laptop turns off at random times when in use. Sometimes it will shut down completely or the monitor will just turn off but the computer will continue to run. Other times, as I am typing, the monitor will start to blink on and off as if about the shut down completey.  I don't dare adjust my monitor when in use for it will turn off the screen or even shut down. This will happen whether my laptop is charging or running on battery power alone.
I have had my laptop for about 1 year and 4 months now (bought July 2012) and this is a reoccuring issue which started around late 2012/early 2013.  I have a two year plan under Geek Squad support and have taken my laptop to them several times. The first time, they believed it to be a virus issue and cleared it. The second time, I spoke to an online representative but she couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. The third time, I went in person and they replaced the fan.
After about a month, the same issue started occuring again and now it is becoming a continual problem. I may be wrong, but I do not believe it is an over heating issue because on multiple occasions I will turn on my computer only for it to shut down almost immediately afterwards, taking about 15-20 minutes to turn back on again. The fan inside is running. I have tried clearing it of dust and used another fan to keep it cool but this problem continues to occur.
My warranty with HP has expired and I still have Geek Squad support for another 8 months but I would like to limit the amount of times I have to take my laptop in for repairs. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you,
    Ariel

Ok I think I finally figured it out by changing the power options and I think the way you told me to reset the battery also helped. here are the settings: reserve battery level (this is when the popup will come up.)10% low battery level (this is when the low battery action will be performed.)8% critical battery level (my comp would die at this point.)7%  low battery action: sleep, sleep (customize this to your liking.) low battery notification: on,on (keep this on.) critical battery action: sleep, sleep (my comp would die already at critical.)

  • Toshiba laptop turns off randomly when moved

    Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satelite C655 that randomly turns off when moved. In fact, it will not boot back up unless I remove the battery entirely, hold down the power button for 20 seconds, then put the battery back in. Then it boots up fine.
Like I said, it randomly happens when it's bumped or moved.
Any ideas what this could be? We took everything except the processor out and put it back in to ensure nothing was loose.
This laptop has been very rarely used and is in mint condition besides this one flaw.

I hate random problems. They are the hardest to diagnose and take the longest time to figure out. I agree, it sounds like a loose or intermittent connection. But if you have gone in and reseated all of the connections and made sure that the cables are in straight, etc, it could be a defective connector, cable or component. Again, going to take time and effort to figure out which part or piece when moved or bumped is at fault. Either put in the time and effort to figure it out or consider turning this computer into a 'desktop', where it won't be moved or bumped. Same location always with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse.

  • DV9000 light come on and turn laptop turns off?

Hi, So i press power button ad the blue lights flick on for about 1/2 sec, the fan and hd spin also for 1/2 then the laptop switches off.
    I have tried,
    ac power without battery
    battery on it own
tryin each stick of ram individually
    removig hd
    removing dvd drive
    but the same with each
    any idea?

Having the same issues and I think it might be the nvidia chip. It has nothing to do with the blink codes someone posted earlier it is definitely a short. My nvidia failed a second time and after reflowing it, it now does the EXACT same thing. I'll try reflowing it again and seeing if that fixes it. Otherwise I'm done with the damned thing. I fixed it once, had issues with vista where it would turn on and need windows reinstalled after i shut it down. Then it liked windows 7, the hdd failed... Hdd problem fixed months later and then not even 3 weeks after that, it goes back to failed nvidia. I'm really pissed that it doesn't work, not laptops these days have such nice features. Remote, 4 usb, nice blue lights, and cool design.

  • Toshiba M645 laptop turns off without reason

I have been dealing with this problem for about 4 months. It has been seen by some technicians and never found the cause. Some thought it was due to the settings in the power options either by what the lid does, or when it should go to sleep mode, and disabled it, but the nobody fixs it. Sometimes it would happen a couple of minutes after starting it, so heating problems are not involved. Some  other times I would be working on bat only and it does it once, I turn it back on and continues to run normal. Some other times, It shuts down like three times in a row, and for no reason stops doing it. One techinician said it could be motherboard problems, and I starting wondering why I bought a Toshiba laptop, if supposedly I was buying top of the line product, recommended by some friends, and now I beleive Toshibas are causing a lot of trouble. Specially if a laptop is just one and a bit year old.
I am really disappointed. Maybe some other owners of M645 can help me

When you say that it has been seen by some technicians, do you mean you returned it to Toshiba under warranty for service, or that you had it looked at locally by a 3rd party?
When it shuts down, is it a hard shut down where it just turns off, or does it go through a proper shut down?  When you restart, do you get any error messages?

  • Laptop turning off automatically

My laptop nc6220 is turning off automatically and its almost impossible to install the window because its turn off automatically in a few seconds kindly guide me about the solution.
    Regards

That is an older laptop and is likely just reaching the end of its life. At a minimum it probably needs to be disassembled and checked for heating issues. Quick shutdown is usually caused by the processor overheating. It can also be a bad motherboard.

  • Windows Vista laptop turn off/shut down loop

I got a windows vista hp pavilion from my grandfather. I have recently wiped it and restored it through the hp program on my computer. Whilst uninstalling microsoft .net framework 3.0, it told me to restart it to be completely uninstalled. Now my laptop is in a loop. It will turn on and the screen that says installing update 3 of 3, load to 99% and shut down. It has been in this cycle for about 2 days now. I have tried force reboot but it just keeps going. Please help!

    Hello Gradof,
Well, you may have to Recover the notebook again if it is trashed, a Reset may stop the horrible looping:
    The Hard Reset:
This method works for a variety of Driver connection and ‘stuck’ program issues.
    Shut down the computer
Disconnect all external devices - everything.
Remove (disconnect / unplug) the AC power
If the notebook contains a removable Battery, remove it
Press and hold power button for at least 30 seconds
    Reinstall the battery,
    Reconnect the AC power cord
    Power on - Log in

    Just in Case:
Recover Windows Vista Operating System Using HP Recovery – Notebooks
    Excerpted from the above file:
If Windows Vista cannot open and if the Recovery partition on the hard disk drive is functioning properly, you can perform a System Recovery by performing the following procedure:
NOTE:If the RECOVERY or FACTORY_IMAGE partitions on the hard drive have been deleted OR the files in these partitions have been deleted, these steps will not work. You must use recovery discs.
Turn off the computer if it is not already off.
Disconnect and remove all external devices such as printers, USB drives, and memory cards.
Turn on the computer and immediately press the F11 key repeatedly , about once every second, until Recovery Manager opens.
On the Welcome to Recovery Manager screen, click Next .
On the Microsoft System Restore screen, select No , and then click Next .
On the System Recovery screen, select Yes , and then click Next to continue the recovery process.
The Recovery Manager gives you the option of backing up your data files. To do so, read Backing up your files .
To continue recovery, select No , and then click Next .
A recovery progress screen opens. Wait while files are restored.
When System Recovery is complete, click Finish .
The computer restarts and continues into Windows setup. Complete the setup screens and wait until the computer finishes the setup. Then, turn off the computer, reconnect all peripheral devices, and turn on the computer.
Before using the computer, update and protect it by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the System Recovery.
Reinstall any software applications that were added after purchasing the computer, and replace any files that were backed up.

  • HT1386 ipod turning off intermittently and not syncing music

my 4th generation ipod is turning off itself intermittently and not syncing music

Basics from the manual are restart, reset, restore.

  • Laptop turns off everytime 40-50 minutes by its self.

So my laptop keeps turning off by its self. I have tried to remove dust and clean filters but it still does it. Any help?

Hmm.. I would probably start with a hard reset (hold down the home button + sleep/wake button until you see a silver apple logo, then release). This reboots the software and can often help with these types of issues. If you try the hard reset and the problem persists, the next step to try is to back the phone up to iCloud or iTunes, reset to factory settings, and restore from back up. Hope this helps!

  • New Laptop Turning Off - Overheating

Hello, Two weeks ago, I purchased a new HP Notebook, and today it has been randomly turning off. According to Event Viewer on the laptop, it has been over-heating. However, how do I directly contact Hp for a return or repair, as it is still within warranty. I ask this since I cannot find any direct contact information on the Contact Support page. Thank you for your help.

    ,
I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message after the weekend from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details)

Reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and re-calibrate the Battery

  • Laptop turns off randomly when not plugged into charger

I have a 2013 Macbook Air and a few weeks ago, it started turning off randomly after a few minutes of use. It only works without turning off when it's plugged into the power.
I tried resetting the SMC various times, and the battery software update was not applicable to my device.
I'm not sure if it's a dead battery or not, because the device still charges.
I work for a magazine, and kinda need my laptop so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

    Hey bbkae
Continue you troubleshooting with the article below to check the health of your battery. I would try to run hardware diagnostics on it to see if it passes the test.
