Laptop virgin needs quick start video tutorial

One thing leads to another - new Mac!
Just ordered new monitor for my Mac Pro ("beheaded" yesterday afternoon). I tried using my old (2003) eMac I've been keeping for (wireless) backup but it too suddenly (first time ever) developed "problems."
Long story: but I ended up buying a new MacBook last night (15 min. b4 closing) at the Apple Store.
As my subject line says, I'm a "virgin" to laptops. So far, I've managed to bungle my way through quite a lot of stuff (including wireless connection, email & browser setups, etc). But I'm sure I'd be less clumsy (less frustrated too) if I could watch a video tutorial on how to operate this lil' thang.
Mainly - need to know better how to navigate with this track pad thingy. I do have a (leftover) mouse I can use but also realize these MacBooks are shipped w/o them for a reason.
Mostly, it's the moving of the cursor, targeting the item and executing the "open" process via the track pad: lots of misses, resulting in "wrong menu" "wrong application" opening.
Anyone know of any video tutes for newbies? I did check the "new to mac" pages but saw nothing specific to laptop "general operations."
Thanks in advance for any help.

Macnoel--
Welcome to the wonderful world of the MacBook!
While I don't have any video ideas, I can tell you that simply working with the trackpad is the easiest, fastest way to go. You have a weekend in front of you; take some time and play with one, two and three finger swipes. After a few weeks, you'll wonder why anyone still uses a mouse.
I could also tell you to read the instructions--but you knew that.
Have fun!

  • Non-video tutorial for Aperture?

I need a non-video tutorial for Aperture, is there such a thing available? A book, a page or WRITTEN instructions? The videos are useless, can't search for what I need to know - ie how do I actually edit a photo and get it to stick (crop, manipulate?) I'm so frustrated I'm editing my photos on my PC and sending them to the mac - thanks!

The Help file is, imho, well-structructured, thorough enough, and serves beginners well. It is (of course) searchable. It comes with the program, and is also available on-line at http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual
The Peachpit Aperture 3 book is used by Apple personnel for training. It doubles as a guide for Aperture 3 certification. It is set up as a series of lessons.

Aperture is a complex program with a long steady learning curve. The view from the slopes is good! Take a break from your frustration. Learn the names of things, the layout of the interface (covered in the first pages of the two things referenced above), and ask +specific, answerable+ questions ("When I do Y I expect X but I get Z. Why do I get Z? How can I get X"). There are many here who are happy to share what they have learned.

  • Quick Start Guide Info not working. Need info for Job Interview

I am brand spanking new to Java but I have a job interview next week and this is one of the topics I need to learn a little about. Here is my issue if someone would kind enough to help.
I downloaded and installed SDK and JDK I am going through the quick start guide I am using the Quick Start guide that comes with Application Server PE 9. The quick start guide requires you to download a "Tutorial Bundle" that comes with the Java EE 5 Tutorial.
The Quick start guide then tells you to access certain files that are in the Tutorial bundle. For example it wants me to go to /Samples/Quickstart directory in the tutorial bundle and look for the hello.war. Unfortunately that directory and file does not exist (there is an /examples/web/hello1 directory but no hello.war
Long story short is there anyway to find a Tutorial Bundle that actually works with the software that I downloaded? Thanks in advance for your help

I found another guide. Thanks anyway

Your boot drive is damaged in some way. If you have an original installation disc, you can boot from that and run Disk Utility. From DU you can select your internal hard drive ("Macintosh HD" is the name Apple puts on it - you may have renamed yours) and select "Verify Disk". If errors come up, try "Repair Disk". If it repairs, then you should be able to restart and boot from it. If it doesn't show up or won't repair, your drive is probably hosed.

  • Needing installation cd and quick start guide please help!!

I am attempting to help a family member find an installation CD and quick start guide for his Jukebox Zen mp3 player he has inherited from his son. He went to Best Buy where the player was purchased in 2003 and they were no help at all. Neither of us know anything about the player and desperately need help.... any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!!! =)

    suzy,
First you need to identify the exact model of the player you have. You can compare your player model number against this chart from the Knowledgebase article SID0848. After that, you can download the relevant driver/software from the download section at the website under Support->Downloads.

  • What cord do i need to watch videos on my tv from my laptop

what cord do i need to watch videos on my tv from my laptop

Depends on what input options you have on your TV.
If your TV has DVI in then you need a MiniDisplay Port to DVI Adapter.
If your TV does not have DVI in but has HDMI then you need a MiniDisplay Port to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support.

  • Shake video tutorial

    hi all,
    any help would appreciate,
i am looking for this video tutorial i saw on shake, i thought it was on the mac website, pretty sure its a web streaming quicktime,
i looked at it a few weeks ago but my history in safari only lasts a week.
i would love to see it now i am about to start using shake
does anyone know which 1 am am talking about, be a great help to me......
    cheers
    simon

    Hi Cap't Mench,
As much as I love shake (perhaps the software engineer in me), the manual that comes with Shake is good in some areas, but really bad in others. It's VERY dis-jointed. It will go from the really basic (key strokes) to the extreme details in a single paragraph.
I've ordered some Shake 4 manuals in hope they are better than what comes with the product. Creative Cow has been my primary resource for getting stuff done -- some of the video tutorials I've found are very helpful.
I think what the manuals miss completely, is exactly why a particular node or function/parameter exists in the first place. Usually features are added due to a need, this need is only sometimes explained.
For example the manual talks about Cineon plates, I have no ideas what that is and it isn't explained either. Sure I do a google search and I find out what a Cineon plate is, but for the manual to jump from hit Command-F to working with Cineon plates is pretty assuming leap.
And then they toss out sub-pixels as if we it is expected to know what a sub-pixel is -- sure a quick google search and I now know what a sub-pixel is. But it is this toss out a complex term follow by long details on very simple terms which leads to a loss on continuity in the shake manuals.
Don't get me wrong, I love shake and everything about it, if I had the time I'd get the Shake 4 SDK, but most of my learning has happened outside of the manual provided with Shake.

  • Video tutorial project too complicated, or am I doing it wrong?

    Hello.
I'm a beginner with Flash Catalyst.
I have a project with 7 states, which is, essentially, a video tutorial.
Each State containts 7 buttons which should switch between the States.
Each State (except the first) includes a video, which should play automatically when I switch from one State to another.
During each video one or two semitransparent rectangles slide in with a text description of the video and then slide out of the screen (I call them "bubbles").
So, each state has a bubble prepared off-screen and in a transition to another State the bubble slides in (Moves). When the video is finished (On Video Play Complete) the project transitions to another State (to another video). In this transition, the bubble fades out and a new bubble slides in for the next video.
At this moment, my videos and bubbles function perfectly, however, only when the videos are played in sequence 1 to 7.
Whan I need is set up all the other transitions between all the other States. Say, when I'm on video number 7 and click on button3 to switch to video 3, the transition from State7 to State3 is not yet defined - the video won't start playing automatically (even though I expected it to) and my bubbles don't slide in and out. Of course.
Finally, I'm getting to my question: Do I really need to manually animate all the transitions in my timeline between ALL the States? I have 7 States, which is 7 by 7 possible State transitions. Each State has multiple layers, with bubbles, video and text sliding in or fading in and then again fading out, let's say 10 objects "doing stuff" in each State.
Setting up all these transitions correctly (there's hundreds, apparently) would take ages!
Did I set up my project wrong? Is there an easier way to do a video tutorial like this?
    Thank you for any help.

If somebody can give some basic reference guide/tutorial it will be of great help.

There is a book specificallly targeted at those questions of "how do a learn JDeveloper" and "how do a learn ADF" - especially if you are a newbie.
The Quick Start Guide to Fusion Development Oracle JDeveloper and Oracle ADF aims to get you up and running with ADF applications in as short a time as possible.

  • Can I customize my quick start?

Hey everyone, I got a S10-2 and love the quick start functionality. I just have 2 little questions.
Can I add a software I use called Roboform to the splashtop browser? I need it because I have like 100 passwords for many sites I frequent.
Next can I add a new icon for videos? I want to watch videos obviously and having a quick start icon for my vids would be awesome.
Thanks and look forward to hearing from the community here...
    Fisherking...

Why they never put a movie application I have no idea... I mean all you need is a basic free source movie software and that would run on the movies I installed in my video folders.
But overall the quickstart function is awesome and it's a big time saver for sure!
Well, well boy. That's what it should be. As far as I can say, the guys responsible for lenovos Splashtop flavour are lightyears behind. Asus for example sports viewing PDF and all important media by default, which is a must have and what is even more important, they update their "QuickStart" which is called ExpressGate periodically to provide security fixes. Especially the browser would deserve decent updates from time to time, because security wise it is the weakest part.
To depend on hacks like those provided by netham45 is a shame. It's up to you to trust someone outside lenovo, but: Isn't it the duty of lenovo to supply the community of paying customers with updates and improvements?
Just by having a look at the most recent released version of Quickstart it seems obviously of no importance for lenovo to take care about updates. It seems to me just like a marketing joke., in order to pretend YES! We have it...
Look for yourself as of this writing 1.1.8.8 2009-04-29 is the newest you can have in the download section
This release while surfing the internet with the built in splashtop browser is prompting to save instead of opening and displaying widely used formats all over the internet up to no avail. What is that good for?
I am heavily dissapointed and can only hope this will change...

Although you don't need an understanding of Firewalls or Network Translation on Routers some backgound reading can help.
This link Apple Doc number 93208 can help with basic settings in the Mac's Firewall and the Router's settings.
    Note 1 should read:
    1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP and UDP; and 5220, 5222, which need to be open for TCP only.
The page contains a link to a list of Routers that will work "Out-of-the-Box".
If your's does not appear, pay attention to Note 4, near the bottom, because you are going to have to search for more info about your router (or do that un-Mac thing and read the manual).
I found this ADSL GUIDE site useful for getting extra info by users of routers on DSL.
This site has an Apple Related Area in the Technical section which I have linked you to. It is searchable.
PortForward.com Has pics and instructions for many modems and routers for the Port Forward method of opening ports.
    How to Start
After getting your account name, start iChat.
It will lead you through a assistant. Ryan's Pics and instructions on this bit
If you launched it before and are starting again make sure iChat is off line.
Go to Preferences in the iChat Menu item. Open the Acounts icon.
Select the type of account it is.
Type in your name (without the @mac .com suffix) and use tab key to enter password.
Server Options button (Server Settings tab in iChat 3.x) should be live at this point. Check that it reads login.oscar.aol.com and the port is 5190.
Close Server Options and hit enter.
    iChat should now log on.
In iChat 3.x there is a check box in the accounts Information tab that says "Use this Account" to be checked to activate it.
    Buddies
You now have to enter Buddies into the Buddies list
Use the "+" button at the bottom of the Buddy list window.
Add New Person or from your address book if you have recorded Buddies account names there.
The first account names you should add are the test accounts shown In Contact Testers or the FAQ here.

  • Why do I need Quick time 7 and Quicktime 10 ?

I have just migrated from iMac5 (2.16 GHz) Mac OS 10.4.11 Quicktime 7.6.4 to a new imac 3.06 Mac OS 10.6.2 Quicktime 10.0.
Some of my quicktime files play ok but others prompt me to download quicktime version 7. Why do I need to do this ? (There seem to be a lot of problems with this looking at the forums). All the files play on the old mac. Why isn't Quicktime forward compatible or why is there no import facility so that you can make your old files compatible ?
Or am I missing something ?

Some of my quicktime files play ok but others prompt me to download quicktime version 7. Why do I need to do this ?
Because your system thinks you are missing specific codecs required for the playback of certain compression formats. In some cases this may be an installation problem in which the codec was "lost" or "orphaned" during the update process. In others it may be a need to update the component to work properly under the dual QT X/7 framework installed under the Snow Leopard OS. You need to check the Inspector/Finder Info or similar window to determine what specific codec is causing the problem and then re-install or update that specific codec/component/package.
(There seem to be a lot of problems with this looking at the forums).
Most of the problems are "self-inflicted" by individuals who, rather than studying the problem symptoms, analyzing them to determine their cause, and then fixing the problems, elect to immediately delete and re-install software -- often attempting to mix components from different operating systems and/or update versions of the software in their haste.
All the files play on the old mac. Why isn't Quicktime forward compatible or why is there no import facility so that you can make your old files compatible?
I am running both Leopard and Snow Leopard variations of QT v7.6.6 and all of my "old" files have remained compatible -- to include MPEG-2 video and a limited number of third-party supported compression formats. Since my configurations continue to work properly, my first guess is that you have an unresolved configuration problem or inability for your QT X 64-bit routines to communicate/switch properly with the 32-bit routines as required for your content.
Why do I need Quick time 7 and Quicktime 10?
Technically, you probably don't. However, as an old QT 7 Pro user who likes many of the QT 7 Player controls/options/features better than QT X's new but more basic features, I maintain both in active service and tend to use QT 7 as the default player of most of my work flows. Still, this is up to the individual. I am in no hurry to rush the changeover from an older but still more reliable QT technology to a more modern, but as yet, less mature and well tested "new" QT technology. In short, I feel it best to make the most of both dispensations during the development of this "new" version of QT.

  • Need advice on video software.

    Need advice on video software.
I currently use adobe elements 3 and have done so for a few years now with no problems. my os is XP and my system is a couple of years old, but we do have a brand new win7 machine in the house.
I am currently look at Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 Ultra OR Adobe Premiere Elements 8. Reviews for both softwares seem very good BUT, when I dig deeper into user reviews instead of editor reviews do I find problems.
Major problems with program crashing all over the place, at start up etc, and it is still not getting along with any win7 machine? Major problems with drivers. Honestly, I do not want to have to jump through dozens of hoops to get any software to run. After I pay for it, it should run, period.
Has anyone else here used both softwares and can you give an honest opinion of each?
I am also asking these same questions on the cyberlink site.
I would like to upgrade my video software to take advantage of the new features that are coming out but I really don't want a big headache trying to run one or the other. To be fair, when I bought adobe elements 3 I had also bought pinnacle, which has gathered dust since my first week with it, which is why elements was purchased. That was money wasted and I do not wish to repeat this. I would like to go with Premiere Elements 8 but remain very unsure.

If your newer machine is Win7 64-bit, it might be worth waiting for SP-1 to be issued, and then hope that 64-bit drivers are fully included. The 64-bit drivers now seem t be an issue at this point, and that will affect any NLE program.
Also, and regardless of which particular program you choose, optimizing your computer, the OS, the hardware, and the resources management, will go a very long way to insuring success. Few programs can tax a computer, as an NLE can - any NLE. Video and Audio editing will stress your system, like almost nothing else can, except for heavy-duty CAD, or 3D work, though those are usually done only on specialized, optimized computers, designed just for those applications.
Not the specific advice that you seek, but it's the best that I can do.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Why do I get "missing plug-in" when I try to play apple video tutorial?

I tried to watch a Video Tutorial from Apple's website, Support, but when I click on the video, it says "missing plug-in". Then I click on the line that says "when trouble viewing videos, click here" (right next to the Q for Quicktime) and i get a message that says "Quicktime is already part of your Mac". I checked to make sure I have the latest update of Quicktime, and I do.
Other plug-in "help tips" say that I should "get a plug in" but don't say WHERE to get it, or WHICH ONE to get.
Other articles say to "check the website to see which plug-in you need", but don't tell you how or where to check on the website??
