Hello, I am using for about a year ArchLinux on ASUS Zenbook UX32LN.
At the beginning everything was fine. Battery was fine for about 8 hours of use.
Now after year and thousands of updates I have man issues with Arch:
Battery works for about 3-4 hours. Battery ewar level is 12%, so it should work for 7 hours.
Firefox is freezing a lot.
Whole system is freezing a lot.
Firefox is lagging on some websites.
And many more issues (I will add them there after they happen or I will remember them.)

A few things to try while you get more info on the situation:
- Delete firefox profile/disable extensions & addons/ try chromium
- Check htop for runaway process when system freezes
- Check cpu governor and frequencies (c0 - c7 states)
- Try testing with the LTS kernel, it is currently on 3.14

Yes, that was the terms of the warranty that you accepted when you purchased the phone. You had the option to purchase an extended warranty that would have covered it for 2 years, but you chose not to.

Adobe BRIDGE CS 5 PHOTO DOWNLOADER freezes and/or stops working during download after 2 years of use. I have uninstalled/re installed twice, cleaned system, adjusted Bridge settings with no change. And I have found no helpful troublshooting tips in forum or on web.

Does it freeze with other type of cards. Have seem some post that suggest an imbedded CODEC on the flash card can cause file corruption in Bridge and Mac Finder.

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

What exactly is missing?
The iPhoto icon in the Dock, that you used to launch iPhoto?
The iPhoto application from the "Applications" folder?
Your iPhoto library from your "Pictures" folder?
To check what is still left, click on the looking glass icon in the upper right corner of your screen and type "iPhoto" into the Spotlight search field. This should find anything with iPhoto in its name. Does it show an iPhoto application? Then click it to launch it.
But before you do anything else, I'd strongly suggest to get yourself a backup disk and make a Time Machine backup of your machine right now. You have already noticed, how risky it is, not to have a working backup. The best computer will crash one day.

Have you tried using a different brand of optical disk? (You don't say whether you are doing CDs or DVDs.) Some are better than others.

M500 120 GB mSATA hanging/crashing Windows 8.1 Ent after 1 year of use

Hi, I purchased a M500 120GB mSATA disk June '14 from Amazon, and installed it in my Sony Vaio T-Series laptop.
I have been using it ever since and it has been fine and speedy.
Since last week, I noticed my laptop started hanging applications and then crashing without reason.
At first I thought about some Windows update, since I did not install any application recently. I formatted and reinstalled Windows 8.1 ENT and then Windows 7 Professional and in all cases, I noticed that it would install fine, but after sometime, during normal operations, some random application ie Word, Excel, Google Chrome, IE, would hang by itself, and would not come back. The mouse pointer is showing the busy (spinning wheel) sign as well. Eventually, after much waiting, I would have to manually reset the laptop and then it would be fine again, until this starts again. Eventually I installed Windows 8.1 Ent on my HDD and everything went away. Yesterday, after doing some reading, I installed and ran CrystalDiskInfo and it says that my disk is 98% good. I dont understand the other parameters returned by the SMART function. I am attaching a screenshot here and hoping someone can diagnose it for me.

Looking at SMART values I would say the drive is completely healthy. After clean OS install did you install any chipset and storage drivers? What is the exact model of your Vaio?

After a year of using PS, Adobe tells me my serial number is invalid.

Has anyone had any problems with serial numbers not working anymore? I'm told by a person on their chat support that my serial number is not valid.
I have CS4 that was purchased from ebay, but it's all original, not a copy. I've been using it for the past year, and about two weeks ago I had a pop up message when I opened the program saying that the serial number wasn't valid and that I could only use PS as a trial version.
Since the program was bought from ebay, Adobe support won't help me. I was told they don't support sw problems purchased off of ebay.
If I had a copy, I'd understand, but it isn't.
When I asked why after a year it doesn't work anymore, I was told to go talk to the person I bought it from.
So, hopefully someone can tell me why it stopped working. Thanks!

That's pretty much it, yes. Adobe knows about the problems and is working on them.
In software development there's always a balance that must be struck between trying to rush to get a problem fixed and taking the time to get it right so it truly is fixed.
Personally I feel the activation / licensing processes must always be kept as non-intrusive as they can possibly be since they're all about protecting Adobe, providing legitimate users no useful functionality.

Cleanup after a year of use...

Just finishing up our first year of using FCP, Motion, Livetype at our high school. I've spent many hours learning from your forum (thanks) and also learning from the kids.
We've finished the year with some nice looking project. Saved them to DV for archive and teaching purposes. Now, I'm ready to put them (the G5's not the kids) to sleep for the summer. Want to clean the programs/drives up and get them back to starting shape before I leave. Any steps to follow? Things not to do?
We've got G5 Duals with 2 drives runing 5.04.

Save the project files, stills media and titles sequences to DVD. Basically back up things that were created and can not be recaputured.
Then, erase & reformat the drives using sector checking (to look for bad sectors) and reinstall the OS going through all the updates, then the FCP suite going though all the updates.
Once this is complete, you have machines ready to go in the fall.
FWIW, in the labs I've run, we do a disk image of a clean install at the beginning of the fall semester and use it to redo the machines at the during each school break and more often if a particular machine is going funky. It is much faster to reinstall everything on a lab machine using a disk image than to try to troubleshoot software issues.
The students are warned they will loose everything if they leave stuff where it should not be stored. It usually only takes one time having their project blown out for them to inately understand the consequences.

Activation problem after several years of use

I have used Photoshop cs v8.0 for several years on the same computer. Yesterday when I tried to open Photoshop a popup windo said I needed to register my product to get my activation code. The online method would not work, the phone method went to an automated system that took the serial and activation numbers and then told me they were already in use or were bad and said to use the online method. I am a small business that needs to use this product daily. Any help would be greatly appreciated. A contact phone number from adobe with an actual person would be good customer service.

Note you must download the new non-activation version of CS2 from the link provided and use the new non-activation serial number provided by Adobe (same place where the download link is located) to license the software on your computer.
Don't try to use your existing serial number - it won't work.

After 1 year of use FCPX crawls and unusable?

I purchased the 1st version of FCPX one year ago and produced an awesome 5 minute music video with no problems whatsoever on a OSX 10.6.8 Mac Pro Quad Core with 6mb of Ram, 3 one TB hard drives (1 for the system, 1 for Video, 1 for Audio). it worked great and loved it. My second project was a 2 minute production and had no problems either. But after the 2nd project all of a sudden FCPX just became a slug, so I installed more Ram (16mb). But this did not make any difference. I deleted the prefs with no change, I have the current version 10.0.5 installed with no change, I installed Event Manager X with no change. I installed MacKeeper and cleaned out 2.1 GB of junk with no change, I Have plenty of room on all HardDrives. I have not installed Lion because everyone says it slows down FCPX This Mac Pro is only dedicated to Video production so It is not cluttered with other Apps. Every thing else works great except FCPX! Help

This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance - you may have already addressed some of the items but it's worth checking.
Make sure you're using the latest version of the application - FCP X 10.0.5 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.3.
First, check that you have at least 20% free space on your system drive
If you have not already done so, move your Projects and Events to a fast (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD. Make sure the drive's formatted OS Extended (journalling's not required for video). You should always keep at least 20% free space on the Hard Drives that your Media, Projects and Events are on.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:

If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
If you ever experience dropped frames, I strongly recommend you use ProRes 422 Proxy - it edits and plays back like silk because the files are small but lightly compressed (not much packing and unpacking to do) - but remember to select 'Original or Optimised Media' (FCP X Preferences > Playback) just before you export your movie, otherwise it will be exported at low resolution.
If you have plenty of processor power, for the ultimate editing experience, create Optimised Media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot. There's a great application for this, called Event Manager X - for the tiny cost it's an invaluable application.

Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences (under Playback) - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

Photoshop CS6 - failure to open after 2 year's use due to adobe message.

An Adobe message to confirm a trial of PS CS6 Extended has suddenly appeared to prevent me from continuing to open my photoshop application ( non extended) which has run OK for two years. No other options are given. How can I get rid of this message to enable me to use application? Adobe Chat suggested deleting some adobe files but this did not work and then they suddenly discovered that CS6 was no longer supported on Adobe chat! Can you help me?!

Help gives merely version 13.0 x64 (windows) But I have found a solution & I think the following gives the sequence:
message first appeared after my computer's card reader stopped working pro tem, so I downloaded the card from the camera via USB using Bridge CS6 downloader, something I have not had to do before (ie from the camera). The message above gave only one option, but of course, CS6 extended or otherwise is not now available from Adobe anyway. By attempting to open Photoshop CS6 offline the message option to license the product now appeared as well with requirement also to sign in my Adobe ID. By entering the licence serial number again of my unextended product (although it was already recorded as licensed on my account) and my adobe ID I was then immediately able to open Photoshop. Possibly some piece of software recognised an unusual procedure (piracy prevention)? Anyway it now seems to work perfectly again.

Photoshop Elements 7 does not start (after 3 years i used it)

Yesterday, when i opened my Photoshop Elements 7 (I use it on my PC from 3 years), after the splash screen, an alert windows says to me that there is an error and suggested to restart PC or reinstall product. The program automatically closed itself.
I'm not able to write the exact sentence of the alert, because now PE7 does not start at all. Not even the alert with the error message.
I always used this product in this 3 years (from this PC), without problems.
PE7 was preinstalled and pre-registered by the constructor of PC (Sony-Vaio). So, now i have not even the registration key to reinstall PE7.
Furthermore, I tried to open Adobe Premiere Elements 7 (also, preinstalled and pre-registered, but never used), and after splash screen the program automatically close itself.
What can I do??!?

The problem was "FLEXnet Licensing Service"
Thanks to last tip, that leads to another failure... I remembered that 2 days ago I tried to optimize my PC by stopping some service with MSConfig. One of the disabled services was "FLEXnet Licensing Service".
Searching in google, now i know that "Flexnet Licensing service is used by most Adobe products to prevent piracy".
So, some Adobe products do not start, if Flexnet Licensing service is not running.

TS1506 I have just got a Mac Book Pro after 30 years of using Msoft products and now find a (in my opinion) a piddling issue with attachments in Mail - Apple - just fix it.

After over forty years in IT I am actually a platform agnostic however I have come to expect some developmental maturity across all products, especially in generally ubiquitous apps such as email. I am using OS X 10.8.3 on a 2013 build Mac Book Pro and am very happy overall. Is Apple planning on fixing the various problems with Attachments in Mail or are they relying on third party fixes and workarounds?

My apologies if I have caused offence, not my intention. I was unable to view attachements but have since discovered an addon app which solves the problem very neatly. By way of explanation my frustration comes from Apple appearing to indulge in client lock in as do Microsoft - this practice was "invented" by IBM and only served to irritate clients and inspire excellent work arounds by third parties - much the same as I notice with Apple. I thought Apple would have outgrown this after the IIe vs BBC but I see this is not the case. I have recently upgraded to Mavericks and have no problems with Mail but am now unable to transfer material from Mac Pro to Ipod unless I use the icloud - something I do not want to do for a variety of reasons, not the least being able to transfer MY data without the use of an unsecured transition area. I am very happy with the quality of the Mac Pro but less than happy with the restrictive practices of Apple; I realise Microsoft have similar practises but they are not as completely disruptive to what are generally simple operations commonly required when using computers.
My thanks to all the others who reponded - this is my first foray into the world of forums and I will continue to learn the rules.
