Laptop will boot... backlight turns on... but no video signal

Hello!
(I searched but couldn't find a situation quite like mine, so sorry if this is a repost.)
After dropping my iBook, I busted the bezel/clutch. The unit powered up, including a fully functional display, but the lid just opened a little screwy.
So, I had the bezel/clutch replaced by an IT buddy, and when everything was reassembled, the unit would still boot up, the backlight would turn on, but there was no video signal! We thought maybe the VGA cable got messed up in the process, so we had it swapped out. Same problem.
Any ideas? Any thoughts if this problem is related to: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=877652&tstart=60 ?
I got a heck of a deal on this thing, so I'm thinking about just connecting to an ext. display, backing up everything, and parting it out on eBay. But this was my first Mac, and I only had it for a week, so if there's an easy/economical fix, I definitely want to give it a go!
Thanks folks!
Lance

Lactoes,
This is from Apple:
"Display
No display, or dim display, but computer appears to operate correctly
1. Remove any connected peripherals.
2. Try known-good power outlet, power adapter and power cord.
3. Press F2 (with the fn key pressed and not pressed) to increase the screen brightness
setting.
4. Reboot the computer—hold down the Control and Command keys and press the
Power button, or press and hold the Power button for 5 to 10 seconds to shut down the
computer, then press the Power button to restart.
5. Reset the power manager by pressing the key combination Control-Option-Shiftpower.
Warning: Make sure you do not hold down the "fn" key when resetting the
power manager.
Warning: Resetting the power manager means you will also need to reset the
date and time (using the Date & Time control panel).
6. Reset PRAM (Press the power button, then hold down the Option-Command-P-R
keys until you hear the startup chime at least one additional time after the initial
startup chime).
7. Verify backlight cable and LVDS cable connections are seated properly and that the
cables are not damaged (refer to display assembly replacement instructions).
8. Replace display.
9. Verify cable connections and check cables around the hinges for damage.
10. Replace logic board."
The LVDS cable:

922-6432 (SS)
Check this out:

apparantly there were two versions of this cable the first and the ss.
Even so you should get something. Try the external monitor and report back.

  • Mac Mini boot issue, chime, but no video signal.

    Hello,
I'm repurposing an older MacMini for use as a home media server.  The machine specs are as follows:
    2.53mHz//2x2G/320/SD/AP/BT
    I have:
    1.  Removed Airport/Bluetooth card -- they serve another purpose -- the unit will be hardwired to my LAN.
    2.  Upgraded HD to 500 GB, and installed Lion.  Everything worked fine, I put the project on hold for a couple months to work on other things.
I went to install the unit on the wall the other day.  Before I did I decided to power it on once more to check all was well before mounting it.
All of the connections appear to be fine, however... when I power the unit on, I hear the chime but never get any video signal.  I've tried both:
VGA output using Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter -- my existing Apple TV supports and this is how I got Lion Installed -- so I know the cables are good.
Worred that perhaps the Mini-DVI port was bad I also tried the:
Mini DisplayPort output with a VGA adapter, same result.  I hear the chime and then nothing happens.
My next steop is to attempt to SSH into the Mini from anther machine.  Before I go this route: Any ideas what I should be looking for or intermediate steps?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I'd try the SSH and view the logs for last startup, or maybe Target Mode if SSH doesn't work.

  • My iPod touch 5 will try to turn on but never will

So yesterday I was doing stuff on my iPod when it froze on the spot, I waited at least half an hour and it still hasn't responded to my touch so I decided that I would do a force shut down (which ive done before and had no problems with). After I shut it down I then waited a little while and then tried to turn it back on. The iPod looked like it was turning on normaly with the apple logo showing but after two minutes of starting up it just shut down again. It's been doing that every time and never actually restarts. (And yes I have tried plugging it in to charge and it did the same thing, show the apple logo and then crash again). One of the time I tried to turn it on it told me to plug it into a red iTunes logo (not sure why it was red) so I tried that and iTunes didn't recognize my iPod. Somebody please help, I would rather not have the hassle of going to the Apple Store.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Dv9812us Laptop will not startup

I have a Pavilion dv9812us.  The problem is that when I turn on the laptop,  all of the LEDs (minus the caps LEDs) flash on and the fan kicks on for a sec.  Then it turns off.  It then repeats this cycle of on and off over until I unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery.  This occurs in every combination of powering up (ac+battery, battery only, ac only).
What this tells me is that it is trying to power up, something interrupts the process, so the computer re-tries to boot up after shutting down, but the same error occurs so its a cycle.  The error occurs before there is any screen activity.  Based on another thread I did tried to reboot the computer without the HD in, but that wasn't the problem.
There had been signs of thing happening before this.  The power button would not respond after it went into hibernation.  In those instances I would have to remove the battery to get it to turn on.  This led me to believe that it was a battery problem at first, but now it seems like  a bios or motherboard problem.  But, I'm not sure.  Is there a fix?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The 9000 series are prone to graphics problems, see this video
    http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=mixcatcom#p/u/58/bnkQNmKauEc
    symptoms may include:
Laptop will power and turn on, but no display on screen
When Powered on you can hear fan and blue lights light up but nothing on screen
Cycles on and off by it self however never shows anything on screen
Screen is full of "squiggles" or vertical/horizontal lines
Reboots on its own after a few minutes and repeats this
No power at all however power jack and supply are good
Here is a person who fixes this for a reasonable fee

  • Need Help HP DM3 (DM3-1130us) Laptop will not power on. No power at all except for light on a/c jack

    Hello, I need some help.
I have a HP DM3-1130us Laptop that will not power on at all.
the only thing that happens when I plug it in is the power jack lights up.
When the power button is used absolutely nothing happens.
No power, no fans, no leds, no on/off cycles, no beebs, absolutely nothing
just the light by the power jack that says the cord is plugged in.
The laptop has Windows 7, 320gb hdd, 4gb ram.
I have tried new power adapter and still nothing.
I have taken the battery out and tried and nothing.
I've tried the option where you take the battery out and hold the power and nothing.
I have tried with different hard drive and no hard drive and nothing.
I have tried reseating the ram and tried new ram modules still nothing.
So I am kind of stumped on what to do, the laptop will just not turn on.
Its not under warranty anymore so cant send it off.
It has not been exposed to any elements(extreme heat or water).
and its never been dropped or anthing.
Im kind of wondering maybe the power button board its self is bad?
If feels fine, its not loose or anything but could it
have just stopped working? for those who are not familiar with this model.
the power button is on the side and is a kind of drag and release button.
Its also on the same board with the Wifi button and 2 Usb ports.
But Im wondering before I buy a new one if this is what it could be.
Or could the motherboard its self be bad?
But even if the motherboard is bad would it still power up
    just not post?
Also does anyone know of any other way to try to power this laptop up
without using the slide button. I mean kind of like off a Dv6000 you can power the laptop on by using the Quicklaunch buttons on top but this laptop does not have those.
If anyone can provide any information I would appreciate it.
    Thank you.

    Hey Tyler,
Unfortunately it is difficult to troubleshoot this type of issue. The majority of the time when the computer wont power on with the same symptoms you described, the power supply board is faulty. Most of the time if the motherboard is bad it should at least turn on or so some signs of life. Like I said, this is most of the time. Sometimes it could do exactly what your experiencing. I would suspect the power supply board has failed since you are not receiving any sort of lights, sounds, etc.
You could check the motherboard for swollen capacitors or loose solder joints but sometimes you wont be able to find anything.
I hope this helps answers your questions,
    Sean

  • IMac 20" A1224 (EMC 2133) LCD bright grey but no video

    Hi All,
I have an iMac 20" A1224 (EMC 2133) LCD boots up bright grey but no video, not even the able logo or spinning gear. After waiting the normal amount of time, the machine responds to keyboard input, i.e., I can change screen brightness and get the machine to beep at me by hitting various keys. I attach the external monitor and it works perfectly.. shows the desktop background after the computer boots up. I even booted the machine up to Ubuntu 11.04 GNU/Linux and was able to surf the Internet while looking at the externally attached display. All the while, the iMac LCD stays bright grey. The only time I see even so much as a flicker is when the computer boots up to GNU/Linux, where it flickers quickly once but then returns to bright grey.
I've checked all the connections, I've run the command+option+p+r, I've unplugged the machine for over 12 hours and held the power button in and turned on power (to reset SMU), and I've disconnected the hard drive (shows a blinking folder if I have the external monitor attached and boot with the LVDS cable detached). I've even checked the LED lights - all four are lit.
    Very Frustrating!
So now I'm left with trying to swap out parts.. An expensive idea to say the least!
    $24 Apple 922-8167 Cable, LVDS
    $250 ATI Radeon GPU
    $190 Apple iMac Intel 20" LCD Screen M201EW02 v.B
Does anyone know a way that I can test to make sure which part to replace?
    Thanks!

Oh and for those who might end up in this same situation... I was able to get the externally attached monitor to be the main screen by first unplugging the LVDS connection (from the LCD display to the motherboard), then booting with the external monitor on and attached. This is nice because now I'm able to use the computer as normal (while viewing it in the external monitor), and I can run a time machine backup. I tried mirroring displays, gathering windows, changing the resolution and brightness and nothing has yet brought back the video on the LCD panel.
I still wish there was some type of testing software to check the GPU and tell me it's working perfectly... because then I could purchase the replacement LVDS cable / replacement LCD with confidence that replacing those items would fix the problem. Apple should attach these LCD panels with a DVI or HDMI connection internally... this way one could always (and easily) attach a monitor to the main output port and be able to easily isolate whether a video problem exists with the LCD/cable, or the GPU/Logic Board.
Also, what's up with the replacement ATI GPU being $250+? That's ridiculous because I can buy a decent 3d-gaming capable PCI-X 3d graphics card for my GNU/Linux computer for about $80.

  • G5 Freeze & Crash - Chimes, Startup but No video- HELP!!

    Hello all,
Have been using my Mac G5 quite a bit last 5 days, and last night when I was taking break and gaming, computer froze, monitor went black, warning tone repeated in rapid succession until I had to shut down using power button on front. The first 2 restart attempts, no chimes at startup, and no monitor. Zapped PRAM, and got the chimes back, but still no monitor. Tried booting from CD's, but without video, can't see if it worked. Noticed that just before it completes startup process, a warning tone can be heard, but no video. Checked monitor with laptop, and it is fine, so computer is not completing startup process and engaging the monitor. Any help suggestions would be worthy of worship. Have a huge job, and running out of time...video card fried??? I guess it's what you get for playing when you should be working!!
    HELP!!!

    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.4)   ATI Radeon9600 XT 128 Video Card

The symptoms are similar to on my G5. In my case replacing the memory cured it. Remove any extra memory and try booting.

  • MSI GE70 Laptop will start but won't boot

    Hello
I've had my GE70 for almost two and a half years now and it has recently started to show a few problems.
A couple weeks ago the laptop started to freeze whenever I moved it too abruptly, particularly when holding/pressing the case near where the HDD is installed.
Now, I took it on a trip with me, and when I tried to turn it on, the fan would spin, the CD/DVD drive would run, and the power light would also turn on, but it wouldn't boot (won't even get to BIOS, just a black screen). The laptop doesn't boot because capslock/numlock lights do not turn on. The HDD seems to be working because its light blinks once as soon as I try to turn it on.
    I've tried:
    1. Swapping memory card slots
    2. Removing the memory cards and turning on (motherboard does not beep, is that a signal that something's wrong with the motherboard?)
    3. Reseting the EC
However, nothing seems to work. Can't send it to a MSI repair shop because I am currently living in Brazil and apparently there's no MSI official repairer here.
Any ideas on how to solve the problem?
    Thanks!

Try to remove all the storage devices and see if you can enter the BIOS menu.
If not, then it's likely that sending it to the service center will be your only hope.
