Laptop won't start up. Can only get to Rescue and Recovery

My ThinkPad T61 7658-CTO will not start up. I tried the system restore and that would not work either. I never backedup on a disk and I have old photos and videos that I would hate to lose.
When I run the troubleshooting message, it says: Root Cause found. Boot critical file c:\ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt. The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable (0X80070570).
I'm devastated. Someone, please help!

  • Can't get to rescue and recovery

Okay I have been making some progress.
I received this lenovo W500 wtih win7 pro 64 bit on a 320 GB SATA drive.  I wanted to put an 256 GB SSD drive in so I created a rescue disk then backed up the partitions to my NAS.  Then pulled the drive and tried to resize the partitions with powerquest partition magic on my XP workstation.  Then this is were my problems started because when I tried to install the 320 GB drive back in the lenovo I had missing operating system error.  So I tried to restore my backups and those failed to.
Here it is a week later and I am now able to boot into the 320 GB win 7 partition but it blue screens on me.  This is the most progress I have made so far though.  There is a lenovo repair and recover partition still on the 320 GB drive, but at boot I hit F11 and can't get access to it.
Help me please get these machine running .......
    W500 with installation of solidworks

Install rnr 4.5   This will install the standalone RNR.  It will NOT be a separate partition.  If will reside on the C drive along with windows. It will NOT have the factory recovery on it.  The factory recovery was in your Lenovo_recovery partition. It will support RESCUE, ie restore from backup.
Call the support center and order a PRODUCT Recovery disc set from them.  If you are under warranty, they should not charge you.  Just tell them you waxed the HDD accidentally. If you dont need the factory install, at this time, just keep them handy.
BTW, did you erase the Lenovo recovery partition. If you did not, MAYBE an rnr install will find the recovery (factory) partition and use it. If it DOES find it you will see 2 items. (1) RNR on the windows platform will show a CREATE product recovery disc option (2) RNR standalone will also show a restore to factory option.

  • IMac won't start up, can't get past the white screen

I have an older iMac, I believe it's the g5, the white one, got it about 6 years ago or so. It was acting up recently, crashing programs, taking a long time to respond etc. I figured I just had too much stuff on my hard drive so I went out and bought an external hard drive. After I copied over a bunch of files (not everything, my music and my photos aren't backed up!) I then deleted the files I transferred from the iMac to make room. It took a very long time for the trash to empty, and then I tried to restart. It shut down but never rebooted. When I press the power button it will only get to the white screen with the gray apple and gray progress wheel. It stays like that for a minute or two with the wheel turning but barely any progress on the progress bar and then it turns off. I tried unplugging everything including the power cord but nothing works. Any ideas? Thanks.

will it start in Single User Mode ? (Hold Command + S after hearing the chime)
If so, follow the fsck section at http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1417
and when/if you (finally) get a 'volume appears to be OK' message
    don't restart afterwards.
then, still in single user, type the command   df/    followed by enter
making sure that the result shows Capacity at some reasonable level, like 90% or less.
df means 'display free disk space', you're checking that the drive isn't so horribly full that attemoting to start might further risk your data
if Capacity is ok- reboot as per the article; if not, post back.
If you can boot in Single User & have done the above, but still can't start normally - try
Safe Mode to see if you can copy your files off.
If Single works, but nothing else, it's probably possible to copy your files in that mode, using typed commands.
if you can't start at all -
Checking your exact model at http://www.ifixit.com/ will show how hard it is to remove the HD yourself... some are pretty easy with the right-sized screwdrivers, and the drive can then be taken to anywhere with a computer & the right cable/adaptor to copy your files.
    or
    Target Disk Mode : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661
if it works for you, would let someone with a computer & firewire port access any of your files that are intact. Apple may, as mentioned, say it's too old for them to look at.
finding the dvd's/getting replacements would be best.

  • MacBook won't start up, can't get to desktop

My MacBook 2.16 Intel Core Duo running 10.5.6 will no longer start up. All I get is the Apple logo with the spinning gearwheel, and that's as far as it gets. The wheel spins forever, so I just have to shut the computer off.
If I put the 10.5 installer disk into the disk drive, and start up holding down the C key, the computer will start up into the installer disk, and its Disk Utility can see and identify my hard drive (about 100 GB in size), but the Repair Disk and Verify Disk buttons are grayed out. If I quit Disk Utility and choose Startup Disk, my internal hard drive is not shown as a possible startup disk.
I would like to be able to start up to my desktop and take off some files on the hard drive that were not backed up, but I can't get to the desktop.
Can anyone give me any ideas what might be wrong, or how I might be able to get to my desktop?

Thanks much, Carolyn! I had forgotten about Safe Mode and all that, but I have Pogue's book, "Mac OS X Leopard Edition," and it explained how to do it. So I booted the computer into Safe Mode and did the fsck -y business, with the result that the computer went through a long routine of self-checking and repairing, and when it was done, everything was back to normal, and the Mac now starts up normally again! As soon as I got the desktop, I quickly backed up everything valuable onto an external drive, which I should have done before this happened, but I tend to forget. I need to get Time Machine going, I guess.
Well, I don't know what cause this problem, but whatever it was, it's fixed, and thanks again for the help!

  • I can only get dial up and need an accelerator.SlipStream is not compatible with 8.0.1.Any ideas? Thanks!

I'm in an area where I can only use dial up.Right now, I use Firefox version 3.6 and have no problems with SlipStream. SlipStream is an accelerator for dial up.I want to update to 8.0.1,but it doesn't appear to be compatible with SlipStream. My local tech support (Pennswoods) doesn't think it's compatible. The existing plugin doesn't work. Any ideas what I can use? Thank you for any info. (I'm not real great with computers)

Sorry, you are stuck with whatever version of Slipstream that your ISP has available. They should know which versions of Firefox are supported by their accelerator plugin, because your ISP is more than likely paying Slipstream for every update that is necessary. <br />
Have you asked your ISP which versions of Firefox are supported by their accelerator plugin?
Beyond that, the only thing that I can suggest is to see if the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/ Addon Compatibility Reporter] extension forces that accelerator plugin work in Firefox 8, with the compatibility override. But, if that plugin hasn't been updated for a Firefox 4+ version at all, I doubt if it will work even with the ACR addon.

  • Can't exit from Rescue and Recovery 4

I have been having problems with my Z61t laptop so I thought I would use the R&R recovery disks that I created.  I was able to start the process with the recovery disk but when I went to do a recovery, a box on the screen asks that I insert the disk labeled "Final Disk."  I don't have such a disk and was never instructed to label a disk with that label.  I tried inserting the final disk in the series that I made, which is labeled disk 5, but that doesn't work.
I would like to exit the R&R program, but there is no way to quit.  When I reboot, it automatically goes into R&R and there is no apparent way for me to escape it.  I even tried booting from a bootable CD to reinstall Win XP (SP3), but the setup program informs me that it can't see a hard drive.  Apparently R&R still has control of the computer and is blocking access to the hard drive.
How do I get R&R to terminate?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
to me this looks like an issue of a missing SATA driver.
In this case I would advice to go into the BIOS and change the SATA mode from AHCI to Compatibility. Once this is done you can use also the Recovery Disks and the restor will work.
Let me know, if this worked out.
    Cheers

  • How to get thinkvantage rescue and recovery to install on windows 7

I have successfully upgraded from Vista 34 bit to Windows 7 64 bit.  All is working smoothly, however, the thinkvantage toolbox tells me to install thinkvantage rescue and recovery.  I have tried to do this from the Lenovo website, however an error mesage tells me I have to install something else first.  Unfortunately, I don't know what it is or where to find it.  Any suggestions?

  • Can't get Rescue and Recovery to Start

    Hey all,
My computer is having hardware problems. I'm at the point of giving up completely on the computer, but I had a few files that I wanted to recover from it first. I've had Hard Drive issues before and usually just have to push the blue Thinkvantage button and rescue and recovery comes up.
However, this time I can't get it to start. I just go to a screen that says "Startup Interrupt Menu" and lists three options, resume normal startup, enter BIOS, and choose a temporary startup device. I can't even get to rescue and recovery if I press F11.
    Any ideas?
    I'm running Windows 7, the computer is a T61 that's a little over 3 years old.

I'm having the same problem as crimesofparis.  My machine is just out of warranty.  It came with XP Pro when I first received it.  A while back, I received a copy of Win 7 32-bit from Lenovo.  I installed it and everything has been fine.  I recently purchased a new Thinkpad Edge and want to sell my T61.  The new owner would like the XP  back on it. I thought I would just run the R&R by pushing the blue Thinkvantage button, but when I do  I'm getting the same thing,
"Startup Interrupt Menu" and lists three options, resume normal startup, enter BIOS, and choose a temporary startup device. I can't even get to rescue and recovery if I press F11.  Apparently something changed when the W7 was installed, but Lenovo did not make me aware that the restore using Thinkvantage would stop working.  There must another way to get to the restore partition (which appears to be intact) and restore from it.  I also can not find my restore disks.
    Lenovo, can you help?
    Thanks

  • Cannot start from the system after rescue and recovery

I have T42 and did "restore factory contents."  In the process, I use IBM product recovery CD from 1 to 6 and reboot.  However it does not start from Windows XP but IBM rescue and recovery with rapid restore.  I cannot get out form this although I restart  the computer.  I appreciate any advice. Thanks.

    Hello and welcome,
My memory is a little fuzzy on this, but IIRC some of the older laptops used a 2-step recovery process.  You first did the recovery from CD which put the recovery image and restore program on the HD.  One the next boot, the restore program starts, and you select to restore your drive from there.
So, do the recovery from media, reboot to the newly installed restore program, and select to restore your hard drive.
I hope that makes sense... and applies to your machine...

    Tal,

The only other option, before calling service and ordering recovery disks, is to try the Rescue and Recovery - Recovery repair diskette. And yes, a floppy drive will be required.
