Laptop won't start up - I just got it

I just recieved my laptop in the mail today, and when I tried to start it up, the power would come on, and it would start to say it was loading OS X, but the blue bar would barely even move before it disappeared and just showed me the light blue screen that flickered every few moments. I let it sit there thinking mabye it was working on something, but nothing ever showed up. And I can't eject the CD thing, so it's not like I can put in the OS X Install Disk 1. What's going on?

Hi kirara,
did that happen when you tyr to start it up for the first time?
and what disk inside the optical drive (if there is any)?
Try to turn everything off, unplugged the power adapter and take off the battery, and press and hold your power button for 5 second, and put your battery back and plug the mag safe back. and restart the macbook.
If it still won't boot up, try to restart and insert the installer disk 1 right away (if there is nothing in your optical drive) and press alt/option key and select start up from disk.
If start up from disk is the only option, then your HD must be failed or corrupted and need to be repaired or replaced. Could be from rough shipment.
But since you just got it, why don't you just visit apple store or call them and ask for new replacement.
Good Luck.

Battery indicator showed charge of 3 dots initially but now only the last dot is blinking. The power cable used to light up green initially but now the green light is gone. I have tried SMC reset, which didn't work. What are my options?

  • Laptop won't start up! please Help

Hello, Can someone help me with my laptop. I have mac os x 10.2x. It completely froze and and i shut it down. When i press on the power button to start it i just got a white screen with grey apple sign with little wheel spins around, and nothing is happening. please helpppppppppp.

You can't have 10.2 on a MacBook, it came with Tiger (10.4) installed ??
Boot holding down Apple/S and don't let go until you see scrolling text.
When that stops and you see a root#: prompt enter
    fsck -fy
Let it run through all the checks and repairs.
If it fails first time, at any time, or finds and fixes a fault - run the command again and keep doing so (some fixes can take several passes) until it says "Appears to be OK" then enter
    reboot

  • What can I do if my Windows 7 or Windows Vista laptop won't start?

I have joined many forums in my short computer life. This is by far the best forum that I have been a part of. It really up sets me when people come on here and complain before they have even given any of the staff or advisors a chance to help them with their problem. What can I do if my Windows 7 or Vista laptop won't start.

This is a great tutorial. Step by step to get your PC up and running and a lot more.Seriosly, if you can't follow this tutorial, you shouldn't have a computer. There will times when this won't work and you will have hardware problems. There are some great people here on the forum that can help you find those problems also. I have tried all these recovery options; they work, and I love my Toshiba laptop. That's why I donate my time to help and that's why others here donate their time. Hi!! You should try the recovery feature in W7. Some times it can be accessed through safe mode. On my model it's easier to use the system repair disc. You can find out how to create that here.

These are basic things you need to know if your going to own a Toshiba laptop.
PS Some day I'm going to convince staff to make a sticky of these things; which would cut their work in half, but then I wouldn't have any thing to do.
Here's what the recovery looks like. You have 5 options to help you. The Dos option can really help if you are familiar with Dos. In Dos you can do a chkdsk---sfc /scannow--- and a whole lot more. Start with the Repair option first and work your way down.

    Try a safe boot.

This boot takes longer than a normal boot, be patient. If it boots login, and see if it seems normal. If so, logout and reboot normal.

  • I have tried to update from Leopard to Snow Leopard using disk. New OS wouldn't load and now laptop won't start at all

I have tried to update from Leopard to Snow Leopard using disk. New OS wouldn't load and now laptop won't start at all. Simply get the Apple logo and the clock below and then after about 10 mins the laptop switched itself off. The Snow Leopard  disk is a brand new family edition. Error message when attempting to install was that "this software cannot be installed on this disk".

Thanks Fred, but I've tried '''ALL''' that already.
I '''THINK''' I might have found the problem - the Profiles folder has been locked by inherited properties from the levels above. I have had to go all the way up to my User folder and reset ALL the properties from there down to be unlocked so that I could remove the prefs.js file so that it could be recreated on the next launch of FF. Exactly why my User folder is locked in such a way as to stop me/FF making changes when I have been able to alter preferences at will in the past, I don't know ...
So far, so good. I have since done a complete shutdown and when I restarted this morning, FF seems to be behaving itself ...

  • My laptop won't start up, I want to back it up via firewire, but it is filevault protected. How do I login and turn off vilevault?

My laptop won't start up, I want to back it up via firewire, but it is filevault protected. How do I login and turn off vilevault? When I connect to another computer via firewire and try to transfer files, finder freezes.

To use FireWire target disk mode
Make sure that the target computer is turned off.
If you are using an Apple portable computer such as a PowerBook or MacBook as the target computer, plug in its AC power adapter.
Use a FireWire cable to connect the target computer to a host computer. The host computer can be powered on.
Start up the target computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears. The hard disk of the target computer should become available to the host computer and will likely appear on desktop. (If the target computer is running Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger, you can also open System Preferences, choose Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. Restart the computer and it will start up in Target Disk Mode.)
When you are finished copying files, locate the target computer's hard disk icon on the desktop of the host computer and drag it to the Trash or choose Eject (or Put Away) from the File menu.
Press the target computer's power button to turn it off.
    Unplug the FireWire cable.

  • My laptop won't start without battery mounted

Hello! I have a Compaq CQ61-200sq laptop and recently my battery just got "old". So for the time untill i will buy a new one a just took it out and try to use the laptop without battery, just with the AC adaptor pluged in. But, just i said it won't start if i don't mount the battery. If i took the battery out while it's on there is no problem.
So, my question, beside what could be the problem, is if the problem will disapear with a new battery. I don't want to buy a new battery and still have problems.
    Thank you!

I updated it about two to three times and would still experience the same problem.
Why update 3 times?!? If you run an update, and it installs normally, that it - done!
There's a world of difference between running BatteryUpdate 1.2 and installing a new battery. In fact, if you read the linked page above, it states that the after you run battery update if you experience any of the listed problems you should contact AppleCare. Their first step will be to replace the battery. Could it be a logic board problem? Sure. Is that the first thing they'll do? No. By that reasoning, the first thing to try if your car fails to start on a cold morning is to put in a new engine...
So, to the OP, contact Apple - or better yet, if it's convenient, go in to an Apple Store. Get a new battery. If the problem persists, go from there. The advantage of taking it into a Store is that they'll test it on the spot.

  • Laptop won't start up - help

Hello. My laptop was working just fine all last week while teaching a workshop and now I went to turn in on and the screen stays black. I plugged in the power cord and let it stay plugged in over night and it still won't turn on. The light is green on the power connection so I know it is getting a connection but when I push the on button I hear nothing. Is there a way to get this to start up or does it sound like I need a total new battery?
    Thanks

    Hello Brody,
I posted a query about my laptop and you follow up after one of your comments with Hold That Thought.... not sure if you meant to not follow the advice given??? Anyway my mac book pro won't start up although the charge light is green when plugged in. It worked fine before that but now am not sure if the battery is useless or is there another way to start this up? Battery is removeable.
    Thanks so much.

  • Laptop won't start after cutting out during an update

    Dear All,
My laptop cut out during a software update (I think the battery died, although the screen readout said I had plenty of life left) and since then it won't start up. When I turn it on it just goes to the grey screen with the apple logo and the little circular symbol showing that it's thinking about something, the one that normally comes up before the sign-in box appears.
I have attempted to start from my OS X installer disc 1, but after a lot of noisey chugging, nothing further happened (except that my disc is now stuck in the drive).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hannah.singh: Both the Repair Disk routine in Disk Utility and the fsck routine that you've now run check the structure of the file system on your hard drive. In essence, they're checking to see that every item listed in the disk's invisible directory is actually where the directory says it is. Neither utility can or will alert you if a necessary file has gone missing (because, for example, an updater has deleted it and not replaced it with a new version), or if an incomplete update has left incompatible system files in place that will prevent the computer from starting up, or keep some other essential operation from being performed. These utilities aren't designed to discover whether there is actually a bootable operating system in place; they only tell you whether the disk directory matches the actual contents of the disk, and if not, whether they've been able to patch it so the two do match.
So if you were applying an update that altered any system files before it was interrupted, it's possible that the operating system on your computer is now unusable even though the directory is in fine shape and all the hardware checks out too.
Under the circumstances, I recommend starting up from your latest OS X installer CD/DVD and performing an Archive & Install.

  • Updates failed and the laptop won't start up

I started to download the Apple updates today and half way through the laptop just close down. It now won't start up again.
It goes throught the Login window and sticks on the bluw screen with the cursor static in the top left corner.
Can anybody help with a suggestion?

    Graham M.,
In order to resolve your problem, please provide additional info.
    1) Were you on battery or AC power?
    2) Are you using dial-up, DSL, or Cable broadband?
    3) Are you connected to the Internet by Ethernet cable, Airpt. Extreme/Expr?
    4) What version of Panther .... 10.3.9?
In the meantime, completely shut-down the PowerBook and disconnect the AC power and carefully remove the battery; unplug ALL power sources to any of the above (2) and (3).
Wait about 20 minutes, then reinstall the battery and plug-in the AC line to the PB.
    a) Insert your Panther install disc #1
    b) Press the power button, while holding down the C key until the Install window appears.
    c) From the Apple Menu Bar select Disk Utility and run Repair Disk only. Do NOT Repair Permissions from the disc; it will be outdated.
    d) If RED text is displayed, run the Repair Disk a second time even if the repair was completed.
    e) After the second run, eject the Install disc and RESTART the PB from the Apple contextual menu.
    f) Using Disk Utility (from Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility) run Repair Permissions.
If everything looks OK at this point and you have the above peripherals:
reconnect power to any external modem ... wait 5 minutes, reconnect power to the Airport ... wait 5 minutes, reconnect any Ethernet cable.
Assuming your good to go, update to 10.3.9 from the COMBO updater on the Apple Support Downloads web site and run Repair Permissions again.
Consider installing a very good maintenance program like Macaroni.

I hope all this helps; let us know.
