Laptop won't startup. . . chirps like a bird???!

Went away for the weekend. Was watching a DVD on my G4 laptop which hasn't had a problem in 3 years, and it wouldn't eject the DVD.
Went into (option-command-o and f) on startup to do eject cd but sometimes i don't even get to the Apple, or I get the apple and the circular thing and it never ends. Finally did get the dvd out by pressing the eject button repeatedly.
Tried zapping P-RAM and that's when my computer started making this weird chirping noise, like a bird or a fire alarm, very sharp and quick, about every 30 seconds, won't start up.
Anyone heard of this or have any idea? Was it related to the DVD? Where is the sound coming from? I was out of town with no net so I haven't looked into restoring from the System Software CD yet.
Any thoughts or references much appreciated.

specs below.

I broke down and took it to Total Mac today, and apparently that is it - drive failure. It worked great for three years - i wonder if the wiring (I was in a cabin for the weekend) and not having a surge is what killed it? It was only plugged in a few hours.

  • Laptop won't turn on

I was trying to do a secure delete on my Apple, but I couldn't figure out how. So I just started throwing everything in the trash.
Now my laptop won't turn on when I press the power button. Should I get an Apple restore disc?
What should I do? How do I fix this problem???

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
One easy way of secure deleting, or deleting in general (use mostly when delete a large number of files) is to put all the files in one folder (just create a random folder in Finder) > Press Control (ctrl) and click on the folder > Go down to move to Trash (in the popup menu) > Go to Finder > Secure Empty or Empty Trash.
Did you delete the files or did it just shut off? What exactly were you deleting? Languages, fonts; anything like that? You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #106214 on Troubleshooting Startup Issues. Do you get any sounds or flashes of light (from the "sleep" light)? You may want to try booting up in Safe Mode (Knowledge Base Document #107393 on How to Startup In Safe Mode), or with the install discs.

It sounds like your hard drive is bad. If you can see it in Disk Utility you may still be able to get your files off of it. If you have one of the MacBooks with the removable battery it's very easy to put in a new hard drive.
Here's instructions on replacing your hard drive http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
To buy a hard drive try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives

Put your old hard drive in an external case and after you've formatted your new hard drive and installed your operating system on it plug in your old hard drive and see if it is recognized by the new system. If so then transfer whatever files you want to the new hard drive

I have joined many forums in my short computer life. This is by far the best forum that I have been a part of. It really up sets me when people come on here and complain before they have even given any of the staff or advisors a chance to help them with their problem. What can I do if my Windows 7 or Vista laptop won't start.
    http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Computer-Troubleshooting/What-can-I-do-if-my-Windows-7-or-Windows-Vista...
This is a great tutorial. Step by step to get your PC up and running and a lot more.Seriosly, if you can't follow this tutorial, you shouldn't have a computer. There will times when this won't work and you will have hardware problems. There are some great people here on the forum that can help you find those problems also. I have tried all these recovery options; they work, and I love my Toshiba laptop. That's why I donate my time to help and that's why others here donate their time. I'm creating this message because I know Google will pick it up. Google picks up every thing

Hi!! You should try the recovery feature in W7. Some times it can be accessed through safe mode. On my model it's easier to use the system repair disc. You can find out how to create that here.

You can learn how to use the system repair disc here.

These are basic things you need to know if your going to own a Toshiba laptop.
PS Some day I'm going to convince staff to make a sticky of these things; which would cut their work in half, but then I wouldn't have any thing to do.
Here's what the recovery looks like. You have 5 options to help you. The Dos option can really help if you are familiar with Dos. In Dos you can do a chkdsk---sfc /scannow--- and a whole lot more. Start with the Repair option first and work your way down.

  • I had a windows laptop, and I save files like photos, documents, videos and other things on an external hard drive, and now I want to move those files to the Mac book Pro, and then move those files again to another external hard drive 1T. My question is:

I had a windows laptop, and I save files like photos, documents, videos and other things on an external hard drive, and now I want tomove those files to the Mac book Pro, and then move those files again toanother external hard drive 1T. My question is: Is it possible? Doing this willnot affect the files that I had in windows? No information is lost? or how cani do it?

Connect the external drive to your Mac and drag the files from it to your Mac's internal drive. Then dismount and disconnect the external drive, connect the 1TB external drive, and drag the files from the internal drive onto the external. Nothing will have been deleted from any of the drives up to this point; the files will only have been copied. Verify that the files are readable. There's no reason they shouldn't be; this is just a precaution.
Now if you wish to delete the files from any of the drives, drag them to the Trash, and Empty the Trash while the drive from which they came is still connected. If you disconnect the drive before emptying the Trash, the files you were trying to remove from it won't be deleted. They'll remain in the Trash and continue to take up space on the drive.
Note that if your external drives are in NTFS format, you won't be able to write anything to them or delete anything from them, though you will be able to read and copy the files they contain. The NTFS disk format is read-only to the Mac OS, unless you have a third-party NTFS driver installed. To make your drives cross-platform readable and writable, you must reformat them in the FAT32 or ExFAT format.

Deauthorizing iTunes on a computer?  My laptop won't let me connect my iPhone because it says I'm authorized on too many computers, but when I try to de-authorize another computer I use it won't let me.  What's up?

What do you mean it won't let you?  What exactly does it say? (Sorry to sound so exasperated but this is like the 6th post in a row where people have made vague statements which do little to help us find solutions without a game of 20 questions.)  I'm going to guess and say you can only deauthorize a computer to which you have physical access or VPN login.  The alternative is to deauthorize all which you can only do once a year.

  • Screen saver won't go on, laptop won't sleep!

I've got a 17" laptop running 10.3.9. Everything used to be fine. Recently (after the latest Apple update? I'm not sure) I found that the laptop won't go to sleep. It's plugged in on my desk, and I've got the Energy Saver preference panel (set to "power adapter") set to put the screen to sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity, and the computer to sleep after 1 hour of inactivity. I've got the "Desktop & Screen Saver" panel to start screen saver after 5 minutes. And, when I leave it alone overnight, I come back in the morning and the machine is on, screen saver never kicked in. 1) Is this a problem - is there burn-in or anything like that LCDs? and 2) what's going on? I tried rebooting etc. Could I have some process running which prevents sleep? How do I debug this? I need it to start screen saver (and require login!) when I walk away.

  • Laptop won't boot up WITH PICTURE

Hello! I'm sorry if this has been asked before; I tried to search for words that might be related, and it returned way too many for me to read through, or to guess if they're having the same issue as I am.
I have a A505D-S6968 Satellite laptop.  It is three years old, and I use it every day as I'm a graduate student.  For the past couple days, I go to turn the laptop on, and it won't boot up.  The power light is on, a bank of lights at the top near the base of the screen, a light near the bottom, and the charging lights on the lower right corner.  The fan is running, and the CD/DVD drive makes a sound.  However, that's where it stops.  The screen doesn't display anything and there is no glow from it at all.  The keyboard is supposed to light up, and it doesn't.  The mousepad doesn't light up or work.  So it seems like there's power being provided to it in some respects, as a few lights come on, the fan comes one, and the CD/DVD drive "checks".
Here is a picture of it misbehaving:
Any ideas as to what could be going on?  I let it sit, turned completely off, all night, because I figured I'd just deal with it later.  I had tried for an hour to get it to start and it wouldn't; it just sits like that indefinitely.  But this morning, it booted up just fine.
Now I'm afraid to ever turn it off again!
Again, I apologize if this has been asked a million times, but I can't read all of the descriptions and try to guess if what they're describing is what is going on with mine.  Any help or ideas are appreciated!
    Thank you!
    Grace & Peace,
    Kristen

Try steps 2 and 3 of this article.
What can I do if my Windows 7 or Windows Vista laptop won't start?
If it still doesn't work, it sounds like it may be due to hardware failure that would require servicing.

  • Kernal Panic after update to 10.4.6/Missing HD Space/Won't Startup from DVD

Sorry to lump three problems together, but they may all be related.
First - I was getting random Kernal Panics while at 10.4.5, so I attempted to update to 10.4.6. The computer wouldn't even come close to starting up. I got a screen full of Kernal Panic info. I reinstalled Tiger 10.4.3, and that's where the system stands now. It's running fine.
Second - My computer suddenly announced that the startup drive was out of disk space. I looked and the window said 30g. I closed the window and opened it again only to see it at zero k. I dumped some items to get some disk space, but now I can't get my 30g back.
Third - I want to startup from the Tiger disk like I did when I reinstalled, but it won't startup from the DVD. I'd like to run Disk Repair on the main hard drive. It showed some errors when I ran a Test using the Disk Utility.
I'm hoping this is all related. The computer seems to be running fine, but I can't update or find my missing space. Any advice I can get on these issues would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Jon

Is your computer saving a panic.log after each of the kernel panics? You can see by opening Console (in /Applications/Utilities) and looking for it. I'm not at my Mac now, so I can't tell you under what section to look for that log.
When you try to boot from the CD, are you holding down the 'C' key as the computer reboots? You can also try rebooting with the Option key pressed, which will present you with a list of bootable volumes. It will also give you access to the Apple Hardware Test (if this is the DVD that came with the computer). If you can select the Apple Hardware Test, I'd recommend doing the Extended Test, which will test the hardware, including the RAM.
For the disappearing disk space, you could have some process that is going bezerk and filling up the log files. In any event, to see where you disk space is being used, download and run Omni DiskSweeper.

  • Imac won't startup

My imac won't startup only apple on gray screen and spinning gear. what can I do to make it work. I was using techtool to optimize and on restart it showed up with a can't find finder, it seemed to be stuck in operating system 9.0. I normally start up in 10.

    hi there--
the first thing you should do for this problem is to boot holding the x. this will sometimes force a startup of os x. you can also try startup manager holding the option key. next try booting to the install disk of whatever operating system is installed on your computer (by holding the c key until you see a spinning cog under the apple) and then repair the disk with disk utility. this article gives directions for that http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214. if you can't boot to the disk try the fsck outlined in this article. make sure you select macintosh hd for the repair and that you can after a few attempts reach a point where disk utility says no repairs are necessary. after that you may be able to boot up okay. if you can't, attempt a safe boot by holding the shift key until the spinning cog appears again. if you can boot up in safe mode then remove items in /library/startup items and in login items in accounts in the system preferences (but they are called "startup items" prior to tiger). also, i would remove the fonts folder from the home library and then try a regular boot from there. should keep you busy for awhile. i hope one of these things solves your problem. [ 8 ) ]
just an added note-- if disk utility cannot repair the disk then back up info ( you may want to try firewire transfer http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583) then you can try a 3rd party utility like diskwarrior or techtool pro. if those cannot fix the problem, the you will have to erase and install your operating system. before this though, check the smart status of your drive in disk utility. you can do this by selecting the first icon above macintosh hd with the alphnumeric code and manufacturer name attached to it. if it is still okay, smart status should say verified. sometimes smart status is not available. it depends on the drive.

I also had a problem starting up iChat 3.1 after installing OS X 10.4.3. Basically, I had the iChat icon in the dock and on the desktop and when I would click on the icon, the program would not even start. I went and spoke to someone at the local Apple store and did the following:
    1. Deleted all iChat preference files from the system libary. Macintosh HS > Library > Preferences > search for and delete all ichat preference files.
    2. Downloaded, installed and ran free utility called Onyx for OS X that cleans up cache, etc.
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11582
    3. Restarted machine
    4. Removed iChat icons from both the dock and from desktop and instead started iChat from Finder window under Applications.
iChat now works fine. Not sure following all of these steps did it or just #4. Having Onyx as a utility is worth it anyway.
    Hope this helps.
