Laptop won't stay on ac power..

Earlier today my monitor randomly started flashing from normal to dim over & over for about a minute because it was switching from ac adaptor to battery over & over.  This happened a couple times then stopped.  But soon, it became continuous   It won't stay on ac power now, it just keeps going back & forth & that causes my poor comp to freeze up.  The light on the ac adaptor starts flashing once the comp is turned on, otherwise it's on just fine.  Now I can't use my laptop because my battery doesn't last long enough & I can't keep it plugged in while on or the constant back & forth power struggle will freeze it up, as previously stated!  Is there a short on my motherboard or can I easily fix this problem?  Please help!  I have an HP Pavillion HDX 9300.

This is usually a symptom of a bad power jack.

Sorry to say your jack is soldered to the motherboard and it is a pretty big job for the end user to try to fix it.

Took apart Macbook pro 13 to remove broken headphone tip in the jack. Had to remove battery to get to the headphone jack. Now the laptop won't start. The power button is just not responding. Battery indicator showed charge of 3 dots initially but now only the last dot is blinking. The power cable used to light up green initially but now the green light is gone. I have tried SMC reset, which didn't work. What are my options?

  • DV4 Battery Issue - Battery Charges; But Laptop Won't Run From Battery Power

    Greetings,
I have a DV4, and let me tell you - I am so over this laptop. I have had it for over a year, and in that time, the backlight went out 6 months into owning it, the battery died just after the one year mark, and the webcam has been broken since I sent this computer back to HP to have the backlight issue resolved. I will never buy a new HP ever again.
Now, the battery I have replaced in my laptop charges - but, when I unplug the laptop from the wall, the battery power does NOT switch over. I have had this battery a total of two weeks - it was working fine until last night.  Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Hi, SoCal Cal. Take a good hard look at your battery contacts: both the ones on the battery itself and the "prongs" in the PB case that engage with the slotlike contacts on the battery. Are any of them significantly darkened/tarnished? Is there any debris or fluff on or in them? Clean out any foreign matter, then insert and remove the battery at least a dozen times in succession to see whether doing so will wear away any tarnish that may be impairing the necessary electrical connections. There's not really any easy, better way to clean the contacts, at least not the ones in the slots on the batttery itself. Then test again.
It sounds to me as though not all of the battery contacts are making good contact — though some of them obviously are, at least some of the time. Perhaps "working" the contacts this way will improve matters.
I really don't know what's going on with your machine; these are just shots in the dark.

  • Laptop won't turn on - the power adapter light flashes three times? G62 b29SA

I've been replacing the fan in my friend's laptop. I had a problem with the trackpad not working after I put it back together and that problem is not yet resolved but I have another problem preventing me from getting further. Now when I press the on button, the power adapter light (next to the socket for the external power) flashes three times and that's all. It flashes again three times every time I press the power button. It does this even with an external power source plugged in (I'm pretty sure that it's supposed to just stay on constantly when the charger is plugged in but the power source I have is a universal one set to 19 V - it has powered up with this plugged in before but I don't know whether it was taking charge from it). Any advice?
    This question was solved.

I got the charger from my friend and now it boots up just fine. There seem to be many meanings to the three flashes based on my Internet searches but in this case it appears that it's some way of indicating a low battery.

  • Laptop won't start quickly but power wifi and caps lock light keeps blinking

Hi, it has happened before too but rarely but nowadays it happens on daily purposes.
When I switch on my laptop after leaving it for 8-9 hrs, it won't start up but instead power, wifi and caps lock light keep blinking. I tried removing battery and pressing power button for few minutes but nothing happens. Then i left it like that with lights blinking and after 15 20 minutes it booted. I did same yesterday too. I left it like that it booted after 20 minutes..so My question is "why is this happening? Is it a motherboard issue or is it because of cold moisturous weather here and laptop takes time to get warm up?" Should I show it to HP Service center?

    Hi @Nishant5788
Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I see that you are having a problem getting your notebook to boot up normally. As for what is causing the problem the blinking Caps Lock should tell us what is causing the problem as it should be blinking in a pattern. This HP document Computer Does Not Start and LEDs blink has a chart that will tell you what the blink codes mean.
This is most likely a hardware issue and you can give us a call regarding repair options.  You can reach HP Total Care at 1-800-474-6836 in North America or start here if you live outside of North America.

  • Laptop won't run on AC power

    Hi,
I have a Compaq Presario CQ50 and just ordered a replacement battery. When I get it, I plan on only using it when I need to. The problem is, my laptop is not seeming to be able to run on solely AC power. Every other laptop I know is capable of running without the battery in it, so I'm thinking that either my budget-priced laptop was designed poorly and is incapable of this feature, or that something is wrong with my laptop and I need to send it in.
To be precise, it does actually run for a few seconds on AC power, when I boot it up. But when Windows tries to start, it shuts off. Just a detail worth mentioning.
    Thanks,
    Roman

  • My laptop won't stay alive while on it's battery

I know this is the same topic as a few other people. I have an Applecare protection plan but i'm just wondering if it covers my laptop in Canada as well, if i bought it in UK? I'm flying out soon so i can't go to see someone at Apple- which seems to be the answer to the problem. Unless anyone knows why it just turns off when i turn the AC off?
    Thanks.

I have a MacBook bought in June 2006 and have the same problem: though my battery appears to be fully charged (100% charge according to battery icon and all of the green lights on the battery light up when I press the magic button on the bottom of the battery), as soon as I unplug from AC power the MacBook shuts down. This problem began in September when I downloaded and installed that period's firmware update, but I haven't had time to deal with it until now. I know from several other threads that many, many others have had troubles getting their MacBook to recognize the battery, and some have reported that a new battery solved the problem (buth others say the problem just reoccurs with a new battery within a couple of hours or days) but this is different since from all appearances the battery seems to be fully charged. Following many people's advice on other threads, I've reset the PRAM and PMU -- and attempted to reset the NVRAM, though I was unsuccesful since my computer didn't respond the way the instructions said it would (!!) -- and I've deleted the powermanager.plist file, all to absolutely no effect.
Can anyone suggest what this might be? Could it be the firmware update that messed up the internal power management of the MacBook? Is there any way to return to pre-September 2006 firmware to undo the damage, if this is the problem? Help! And thanks!

I have bought the wireless keyboard for my iPad.  I was working for a day but now the power light won't stay on and as such won't connect to the iPad.  I have changed the batteries but still no difference.

Not knowing which wireless keyboard you bought, it is difficult to be specific.  but ...
it is quite normal for the keyboard's power light not to stay on - it is a way of conserving battery power.
    Try this:
    turn you keyboard off
on your iPad go to Settings > Bluetooth
if your keyboard is listed under Devices, then touch the little blue i to its right and choose Forget this Device
now reset your iPad:  hold both the Home and Power buttons down for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears, let go promptly when the Apple logo appears and wait another 30 seconds for your iPad to turn itself on
After your iPad is back on again go back to Settings > Bluetooth
now turn your keyboard back on and see if it appeard under Now Discoverable
if it doesn't read your keyboard guide to figure out how to put it into Discovery mode
touch the listing for your keyboard under Now Discoverable, it should now appear under Devices
touch the listing for you keyboard under Devices, and choose to pair with it.

Same problem for battery powered; battery + power adaptor or power adaptor only.

Hello tianhuat. I understand you're having some problems getting your notebook to power up. Try the following.
Remove the battery and AC power from the notebook.
Press and hold the power button for 20-30 seconds. This discharges the capacitors on the motherboard.
    Replace battery and AC power.
Try to boot the notebook and post the result.
Are you also getting a blinking CAPS LOCK or NUM LOCK pattern?

  • Power Mac G5 won't stay asleep

    Hello,
I just bought a G5 dual 2.5ghz (june '04). It won't stay asleep. I put it to sleep and it always wakes up within 3 minutes or so. I have unplugged all peripherals except for the keyboard/mouse which are hooked-up to the back of the 20" ACD. On this machine i'm running 10.4.11
I have reset the PRAM, etc. and turned off all options in the energy saver box.
Is my motherboard fried? What else can I do?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    thanks

    tsunami,
+*what does EIR not supported mean?????*+
That's a good question. I googled it but couldn't come up with anything logical.
Do you have an application in your Login Items that may be incompatible with Leopard? Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items. If there are some apps in there, it may be worth your while to jot them down, and then remove them from Login Items. After they've been removed try to sleep your computer. If it sleeps, then (if you need them), add them back in, one at a time, and keep testing to see if sleep is affected.
If the above doesn't work, create another account (I'd give it Admin Privileges) and log into it. Now try to sleep your computer. If it sleeps, you've got an issue (I hate that word) with your account...what, I don't know. You can either continue to try to locate and fix the problem, or (I suppose) you can move your data and settings to the new account....
I'm not sure where the point of diminishing returns is...It make take a fair amount of time and effort to copy your data and settings to a new account. I wonder if an archive and install would take the same amount of time, if you need to go that route...

  • MBP display won't stay off, wakes from sleep

I have a newish 15" MBP, 1680 display, hooked up to a Dell external monitor when it's at home. When I go to bed I cut power to the display via control-shift-eject, but generally don't put the computer to sleep overnight.
With this new machine, after it's been running for a while (as little as a day, or as long as a couple weeks), the displays will come on again in the night. Once this happens, the displays won't stay off for longer than about five seconds. If I then put the machine to sleep, it'll wake itself up minutes or hours later (generally not long enough to miss a Time Machine interval). The only cure is rebooting.
I tried an SMC reset, but that fix only lasted about as long as any other reboot.
I've since tried systematically removing every peripheral (a USB hub, the external display, any directly-connected iOS devices) and testing display-off after each; no change. I've turned off my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, then disabled Bluetooth on the computer, turned off wifi, quit every menu extra (jitouch, Viscosity, Dropbox, Pastebot, Fastscripts, Transmit, Teleport), and quit every running application. The problem remains repeatable after every step.
It's repeatable at the moment — any suggestions for other things to try, preferably short of the reboot which temporarily masks the problem? I'm a little concerned that it's going to manifest at some point while I have the laptop sitting in a bag, which will then cook itself.
I'm on 10.6.4 now, the problem started on 10.6.3.
    Thanks.

Try checking the system logs in Applications/Utilities/Console.app for clues. The entries carry time stamps. Usually a wake event will leave some trace. By matching time stamps to the time of occurrence you may find the culprit.

  • HT1572 the charging light won't stay on - I have to close and re-open the I Tunes app

I have a new HP laptop. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but my charging light won't stay on. I have to keep closing and re-opening the I Tunes program. Is the battery shot or what?
    Thanks.

Depending on how often you use your shuffle (how many charging cycles it's been through), a 2nd gen shuffle from 2008 could have a worn out battery.
Battery charging is not dependent on iTunes running.  If you connect it to the laptop without iTunes running (or even installed), it should charge.  If you connected the USB cable to one of those USB power adapters, it should charge.  It just needs a USB 2.0 port with power.
When you connect it and run iTunes, does the shuffle still appear in the iTunes sidebar?  Can you still sync it from empty to full?
