Laptop working at a crawling speed

Out of nowhere, my macbook pro has come to a crawl at best, to process or do anything, i get the spinning wheel and working with files in lightroom takes 10-15 mins just for file to populate.
Really have no idea what happened, how to troubleshoot or where to start.
Open to suggestions, ideas, any online help.
Thanks
RM

You could try holding the Shift key down on startup, and wait awhile for the machine to begin booting into SafeBoot mode where you could hope it catches and fixes some unseen mystery items while that happens; then after its in Safeboot (you may have to login with admin user pw to get to desktop/finder) you could look into Go> Utilities> Disk Utility, from First Aid in DU you could 'repair disk permissions' and let it go awhile. When that is done, look into the log file of what it said it did. Look puzzled if you like, then quit Disk Utility from the menu.
Restart the computer. There is a chance the issue will go away at least for a time.
Sluggish activity could be caused by increasingly full hard disk drive, lack of free workspace for Virtual Memory to function as part of OS X free HDD space is used as temporary swap, virtual RAM, and the HDD is read & written to perform this. Also, if there is upward expandability available through purchase and installation of additional chip RAM, check into that. Some newer models do not allow the user to upgrade RAM or hard drive. Or battery.
{If the hard disk drive is getting full (should have more than 20% free space, or room for some 40GB of virtual memory, in a crunch) you could consider moving copies of your own files, or even libraries of images, music, etc, to an externally enclosed hard disk drive that is not a TimeMachine. And for an exercise, a second drive that can run a bootable clone of your OS X system, is something to consider. A backup system that can run the computer.}
For an encore you could check into the Utilities folder> launch Console and see the lengthy and exhaustive things that are in there. Some reports and logs can tell you what (by odd names) was happening and when by time, day, hour, min. There are piles of hidden things going on that may be of some help to know.
Also, the system profiler (in finder, apple menu icon, about this mac... more info) there also is a section that shows log files and hardware specifications. Become familiar with these places to look, as in time they could make sense and tell you what is going on.
Anyway that's just a few ideas. Takes a bit of time. Probably better to know what is going on and preventative care than what the sports scores were last season, three years from now. Or the calories in a keg of beer.
Good luck & happy computing!

    Hello Elliiee,
The steps detailed below can help stabilize your iPhone.
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.

  • My iTunes v.10.6.3.25 is intermittently refusing to open. Sometimes re-booting my laptop works, sometimes not. I just put the computer to sleep, and when I woke it up, iTunes started automatically. Any thoughts?

My iTunes v.10.6.3.25 is intermittently refusing to open. Sometimes re-booting my laptop works, sometimes not. I just put the computer to sleep, and when I woke it up, iTunes started automatically (I had been trying to open it just before by clicking on a song file in my Documents window, and that's the song that started playing when the pc woke up). I went to my iTunes Help and clicked Updates/download iTunes 10.7 twice, but got nothing. Now, Im wondering if I should downloacd the entire 10.7, or whether that would overwrite all my files, erasing my songs. Anybody know? Thanks.

    Hey thanks for replying.
    Here's what I did:
First I tried the Winsock reset in the Command prompt. Nothing changed.
Next, I tried the instructions on http://http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4123. The only other program that came up on the 'Winsock Providers' tab on the program was 2 Windows Live applications, which I can do without. So I deleted all Windows Live Applications.
I did the Winsock reset in the Command Prompt again and rebooted my comp.
Unfortunately, nothing has changed. iTunes keeps freezing at various stages of the sync, then shows the candy cane-striped bar with either the words 'Finishing sync' or 'Cancelling sync', before showing the Apple logo.
Sometimes, iTunes gets to the syncing stage - "Copying # of ####" - where it will trudge through the first, second and third tracks before flashing "Copying 4 of ####" for a split second and I catch "Cancelling sync" briefly before the Apple logo appears.
Again, I've repeated the steps I mentioned in my previous post. Does ANYONE know when the new version of iTunes is set to be released?! This one is driving me INSANE, to say the least!!

  • Why is my fan working so noisy and speedly?

I bought a new macbook air two months ago. My model has 13¨ display, 128 GB SSD, 2 GB RAM, etc.
Sometimes, specifically while playing flash videos, fan is working so noisy and speedly and macbook air is running so slow as you can feel easily.
I searched; there are some programs like Coolbook that promise to solve this problem.
But I'm looking an officially solution from Apple. Is there?
    Thanks,

    Hi muhendisce,
If you're looking for an official solution you're not going to find it here, this a user-to-user discussion group. You'll need to get on the phone with AppleCare or bring the machine into an Authorized Service Provider / Genius Bar (Retail Store).
If you're watching flash heavy content expect the CPU & GPU to be taxed and as such the fan to come on. But it shouldn't be noisy (grinding noise).

  • I can't access to wi fi even though i have a good signal and the router is working properly (my laptop works perfectly)

i can't access to wi fi even though i have a good signal and the router is working properly (my laptop works perfectly)

Try rebooting the router and see if that helps. unplug it from power for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again.
You can also try restarting your iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • RE: BEFW11S4 - the laptop works, the desktop doesn't.

I'll start off by saying I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to these things (I can see the eye-rolling now ) but I hope I can get some help here. I have searched previous threads here but could find none that detailed the exact problem I'm having.
I have a hand-me-down BEFW11S4 v1 and the installation guide, which I've read and followed the instructions to the letter. I'm attempting to hook up a desktop and laptop to the router. The laptop worked immediately upon plug-in. The desktop, however, is not working at all.
I have a cable modem (optonline), am running Windows XP and have manually changed the IP address per the manual's instructions. Still no connection. I opened IE and attempted to go to http://192.168.1.1 but IE will not allow it. Instead, I receive a message asking me to sign in or continue working offline.
I don't get it. The laptop is responding so, obviously, something is working. I have also determined that the network cable is not a problem because, after many desktop failures, I attempted to connect the desktop with the same cable I used with the laptop.
In addition, I have also used the EasyLink_Connect file that is available on this site. It determines that I do indeed have an internet connection but it cannot locate the router. The program ends there. It might also be helpful to mention that every time I made an attempt (at least a dozen) to get the desktop working, I powered everything (desktop, router, modem) down each time and re-started according the manual's instructions.
Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

hey...u said that you changed the ip address...however, u did not mention like whether u changed the ip address of the computer or the router ?? and what ip address did u assign to that device...
as the laptop goes online when wired to the router , that means the router is working fine...there could be some problem with the way your desktop computer is set up...
check out the ip address on the desktop..if your computer is set to a different ip address as from the range of the router...then you need to change it to the range of the router's ip ....

Well, it seems the problem I listed in my previous post (unable to wireless sync with iTunes 10.2) has resolved itself.  My iPhone now syncs wirelessly.  Happy for small miracles!

  • How is my laptop working even though I spilled iced tea on it? The keyboard does not light up but works normally, and everything else seems to be in order!

how is my laptop working even though I spilled iced tea on it? The keyboard does not light up but works normally, and everything else seems to be in order! The front of the bottom is hot while the rest if mildly warm. I don't know if its going to have a problem in the future. I wiped off as much as I could with a cloth and left it open and upside down for 10-15 minutes. Any idea if I am in the clear?

  • My MBA indicates my connection is timing out. My wifi on other laptops work in the house. Diagnostics indicate wifi settings failed, network settings failed, ISP failed, Internet failed, and server failed. What can I do?

My MBA indicates my connection is timing out. My wifi on other laptops work in the house. Diagnostics indicate wifi settings failed, network settings failed, ISP failed, Internet failed, and server failed. What can I do?

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved. Some of these steps are only possible if you have control over the wireless router.
    Step 1
Turn Wi-Fi off and back on.
    Step 2
Restart the router and the computer. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 3
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 4
    Run the Network Diagnostics assistant.
    Step 5
In OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and fix the issues listed in the Summary, if any.
    Step 6
    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 7
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Potential sources of interference
    Step 8
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    Step 9
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

Have never heard of that problem before so can only give you an idea of some things to check.
Check in the Homehub management that it is not set to block access to the mobile devices. If you did a factory reset of the hub then it should have cleared any settings but it might be worth checking.
Have you checked that they are connecting to your Homehub and not to BTWifi which would require further log on to get internet access.
What exactly is happening with the devices when you try to connect to the internet. Is it all things to do with the internet or can you connect by 3g?
Have you tried to connect using another router such as at a friends house?

  • Cannot access my desktop cloud apps, laptop works fine.

My dilemma is this. I originally installed CC on my desktop iMac 27 a couple months ago. I went ahead and installed the second applications on my i5 mac book pro several weeks ago too. Today I downloaded the latest versions of CC2014, and took the hard drive home with me to work on some projects tonight, but now I can't access any of my apps and the home screen shows way old updates. Unfortunately since i upgraded to CC2014 the files i created in in-design wont open in the version I had downloaded on my desktop. When I click on apps, it says download error, please reload applications. When i do that it just returns to the same screen.
Really frustrating as I didn't bring the laptop home with me, and its a 45 minute drive to the office.
    What am I missing here?
I signed out of Adobe CC at the office on the laptop, so things should work fine.
    Thank you.

  • Can't browse internet on ipad2, but laptops works fine - any ideas?

Have a weird problem surfing the internet with my ipad2 that started out of the blue a few days ago. Everything had been working fine up until then and I don't remember changing anything or updating new software...
Can't browse the internet on the ipad anymore, and when i point browser at website, it thinks for awhile then brings up an earthlink page (my ISP). Still receives mail/twitter though, so some data is coming through, but facebook app isn't working. And my 2 laptops connect fine, full on browsing. Also seems like my wife's new iphone is having the same problem, starting at same time.
I really have no idea - anyone heard of this?

Try going to Settings > Safari> Clear History, Cookies, Cache on the iPad. If that doesn't work then do a reboot of the device by pressing and holding the on/off and home buttons simultaneously until the screen goes blank and you see the apple logo. It should take about 10-15 seconds to reboot.
