Laptops locking down

I have a Satellite A135 S4527 laptop that has suddenly started to go to lock up on it's own ,please some one help me

Ok I think I can close this. It appears to work now. I dont really know why we had the initial issues. Managed user accounts we created on the lab workstations would not obey the web restrictions we set up. I even tried on my mac mini (10.8.4) and created a new managed account with the same restrictions, logged in and the web restrictions would not work; I could browse everywhere.
Yesterday at home with my mac mini (I take it back and forth to work) just for grins I logged in as the managed user. The web restrictions worked. Took the mac mini back to work this morning and tried and the web restrictions worked on the managed account worked.
Maybe all we needed to do is reboot? The  only thing I can think of is there is some daemon that only starts on boot if there are existing managed accounts. Dunno.

  • Reinstall Wireless Every Time Laptop shuts down

So I have now had my Linksys wireless router up and running (sorta) for about 1 week.  Someone please tell me if this router is a piece of junk, or if all routers are so inconsistent?  Everytime my wireless laptop shuts down, I have to reload the set up again!  It's sooo frustrating.  I am afraid to update anything, or change any channels, because it took me hours upon hours to get it to work at all!  Any suggestions would help.
It's the WRT54GS router.  I'm beginning to beleive that it's a piece of junk , because I read, and read, and read about problems with it.

First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
However, your difficulty sounds like a problem with your laptop.  Download and install the latest driver for your wireless adapter.
After you setup the new driver, reboot, then go into the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.  Delete your current network.  Reboot computer.  Then return to "Preferred Networks" and re-enter your current network info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".  Reboot computer.  It should login automatically, usually within the first minute (may take up to 3 minutes) after you boot up.

  • Locking Down & Creating Exceptions

We have seven school district buildings which includes an administration
building. Each school has it's own server set on NW6.5SP5 and BM3.8SP4 as
well as Zen 7. The admin bld has two servers, one for the building and one
is our web/e-mail server using GW 7.0.2HP and Apache2. It also has GWava
running with Kaspersky A/V (e-mail) and both servers are our DNS servers.
If I set the default filters (to lock down the system) with BM, all
connectivity is lost, which it should be. However, I've not been able to
figure out the correct filters to set to allow traffic into and out of the
web server and e-mail, i.e., if I lock down the building server no one can
get to their e-mail or access the web server but can access the Internet via
    the BM proxy.
I have Craig's books but guess I need a little more detail and pictures. Is
there a book out there for those of us with A.D.D. that will walk me through
creating a filter one-step-at-time including saying what each step is
for/doing or what will be accomplished?
I need to lock down each of the servers, but can't because, although users
can get out to the Internet via the BM Proxy, they still don't have access
to GroupWise from the client and / or Novell's iFolder, and Instant
Messaging, of course. If I go to iManager 2.6 and attempt to creating
exceptions for GW, iFolder and IM, the filter exceptions are created but
    don't make a difference.
Sorry to drag on so long, but we've had an incident happen in the last month
and we need to make the network more secure but still allow users to such
things as the Internet, GW, iFolder, etc.
Any suggestions and/or ideas would be appreciated,
    Tim

We have seven buildings, six schools and the administration building. Each building has it's own BorderManager server. Each building has it's own T-1 circuit. The buildings are connected by a BorderManager VPN (IKE). The web/mail server at the administration building is the VPN master.
Currently each workstation's GW client (in each building) is set to the GW server's (MTA, POA, GWIA, WEBACC) public IP. Setting the filters to create a secure system would kill this capability, correct?

We are using "dynamic" NAT in each building. I only use "static" NAT when I create a secondary IP to my office computer so I can access it from home. NAT is then set to "dynamic and static" and not "static" only.
    >> If the process is being proxied to the public address, you could access it on

The process is not being proxied to the public address, was never able to get that configured and working.
    >> Often this means you just set up an internal DNS server.
Explain further, please. Each of the two servers at the administration building is a public DNS server. To create an internal DNS server, it would be set just to the private IP's of most of the same objects on the public DNS servers?

  • T400 Docking station not a secure lock down.

There is a rash of theft currently where I work. It seems that the docking station will release a laptop even though it is locked down. I am wondering if the cable lock should attach to the laptop instead of the docking station. That will be a pain to do with as many meetings that we go to.
Has anyone else seen this problem or know of a better solution? Is there a known problem with a mechanical issue with the dock station? Other then the obvious of installing cameras.

If security is a concern, I would lock the laptop instead of the docking station. From what I understand, when you lock a docking station, it prevents the mechanical arms on the pad from allowing the laptop to be removed; however, these mechanical arms (plus the docking station locking mechanism) provide nowhere near the security that a Kensington-style lock does. For maximum protection, I would recommend locking BOTH the docking station and the laptop with a flat key or combination computer lock (dual/twin-headed locks are available). A final note - a thief will probably be much more reluctant to rip out the lock from the computer than the docking station.

  • Lock down X140e BIOS

    Hello!
I'm deploying 55 of the Thinkpad x140e to a school, and I want to be able to lock down the BIOS so the students won't be able to boot from other devices or make any other changes in the BIOS. I'm wondering if anyone knows of an application that allows me to lock down the BIOS without having to do it manually on every machine. I'm imaging them with the same image, so if there's an application that can be put on the image beforehand, that would be ideal. Anyone run into a similar situation or know of any solutions?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Lenovo has some scripts (and accompanying documentation) for configuring the BIOS through WMI available here:
    http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht100612
The X140e isn't listed as a supported model, but it might be worth a try anyhow.
How are you deploying the image? If you're using something like MDT or SCCM you would create a task that runs the script as part of the imaging process.

  • My laptop shuts down immediately when i unplug the charger

Okay so I got my macbook air laptop about six months ago, so it's relatively new. About a month ago the harddrive inside failed and i took it to the aple store and they replaced the harddrive free of charge since i was still under the year warranty. I lost all my data since i didn't back it up but it worked normally after that. Now, about a month later, I'm having this charging problem. My computer charges very very slowly when its plugged in (i think it charged about 7 percent over like 15 hours), and the second i unplug the charger, the computer shuts down. I tried looking around the internet for solutions and some people with the same problem say they have like a red or black x where the battery is, but nothing looks out of the ordinary on mine except for the fact that it charges so slowly. In all the time that I've had and used it it's only gone fully dead and shut off by itself a few times (what i mean is that, i almost never let it go completely uncharged, when it was low on battery i charged it instead of letting it die). Also, when i unplug the charger, right before my laptop shuts down, i can see that the battery percentage without the cord plugged in is 0 percent even though that makes no sense because when the charger is in it says 85 percent. The only thing i can think of that I've been doing differently on my computer recently is that two days ago i couldn't find the wall piece for my iphone charger so i charged it via the usb port in my computer a few times. I didn't think this would affect my computer though? This could be totally unrelated, but it's the only thing i can think of that's different than usual. Also, the computer works totally fine when the charger is plugged in. I've had this problem for a few days now and i think it's getting worse. When it first started, the computer would only shut down a few minutes after i unplugged the charger, but now it shuts down within seconds of the charger coming out. I'm very hesitant to open the computer up because I'm not the best with computers and I'm afraid I might mess something up inside. If it really is a problem with the battery and it has to be replaced, I guess that's okay because I'm still under warranty, but I'd prefer if i could fix this on my own. Thankyou so much for your help and all answers are appreciated

Simple, You have a hardware problem that only Apple can fix. So you need to take it back in to an Apple store and have it fixed by Apple. If it is still within it's one year warranty period it will be free.
If you khaven't bought the Apple care Extended Warranty, Applecare, then I suggest you do that before the standard one year warranty runs out. You can't buy it after that one year warranty runs out and to fix any Mac out of warranty is Very Expensive.

  • How do I lock down an iPad from having certain apps removed?

    Hello,
We are a Microsoft-based enterprise that has purchased iPad 2 devices as a means of reducing costs of wireless services as well as integration with the 3G adapter (to reduce damage and theft). While I have had great success with the iPhone Configuration Utility and an MDM server, I need to ensure that users cannot remove the Find My iPad App which we use to track employees and ensure they do not lose or steal the device (since they can't remove the battery).
What can I do to lock down this app from being removed and also, I want to give these employees access to load whatever they wish on these iPad units. We control their access through a VPN to a Microsoft Terminal Server and with Microsoft Exchange but I don't want iTunes and the CEO's credit card being used to purchase apps. Any ideas anyone? I know that this can be done and if not, it will be done by me.

I'm not sure about the apps, but to prevent theft, you'll also need to disable the power button and the ability to restore the ipad. You might also want to superglue in your Sim card because if they remove that, it wont be tracked unless they connect to WiFi.
Also, I'm not so sure it is an app on the iPad. I think it is built into the mail, calendar and contacts options if you have a Mobile me account.  http://www.apple.com/ipad/find-my-ipad-setup/

  • Would like to know how to Completely Lock-down Windows 7 OS

    I don't have a general question..
It's more like specifics about how to lock down windows 7 computers..
    Here's a little background information...
I have two computers, both with win 7(Pro, and home prem).
A family member can somehow bypass all bios and all windows security services... Everytime I go to work or school, he will power on my desktop and somehow 'hack' into the OS and install keyloggers or viruses so he can obtain my banking or other personal information.
He also unlocks and deletes all the passwords so he can have access whenever he wants..
Can someone please tell me how to do a complete lockdown? This is getting extremely annoying.. I've done everything that I can do; Also considering on switching my major to some sort of computer security. I'm starting to lose my mind over these months.. All
    help is appreciated.
    I've password protected BIOS
I've disabled administrator accounts, i've put password on the admin and the guest user; locked the option to change passwords..
All help is appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

    Hi,
If you are using Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise, you can use the Local Group Policy Editor to change policies that affect the security of your computer. Please check if the following policies meet you requirements.
    [User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer]
    Enable these two polices:
Prevent access to drives from My Computer
Hide these specified drives in My Computer
    For your reference:
Lock Down PCs with Windows 7:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/gg983426.aspx
Also, restrict Which Programs a User Can Run. You can set rules in AppLocker in the Group Policy Editor that prevents all programs from being run.
In addition, temporarily Lock Your Computer if Someone Tries to Guess Your Password
If you share your computer with other family members or allow your friends to use it, you should have a password on your Windows account so no one else can log into it. However, someone may try to guess your password and log into your account. If this happens,
you can temporarily lock your computer.
You should also periodically change your password.
If you suspect, you family member using a tool to bypass your password. You may use Malicious Software Removal Tool (http://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/malware-removal.aspx)
    to remove it.
    Hope it helps.

What are the security settings to lock down a form with fillable fields and yet allow someone with Reader to fill in the fields as will as save the form and print it?

You want to allow someone to open your document and fill out the form (in the fields you have created), but not change or edit the form, right? Here's the answer - assuming you are using Acrobat Pro and someone will be opening the PDF using at least Acrobat Reader 9 and up:
Tools > Protection > Encrypt < Encrypt with Password
Answer YES to change the security.
    A new window opens:
Do NOT select Document Open (or that will require a password to open the document.)
Select: Permissions (Check the box next to "Restrict editing and printing of the document.")
Change the following 2 settings from the drop-down box:
              Printing Allowed: Select High Resolution
Changes Allowed: Select Commenting, filling in form fields, and signing signature fields
Leave selected: "Enable text access for screen reader devices for the visually impaired"
Change Permissions Password (insert a strong password)
Leave all other settings alone in "Options"
              OK - OK
Re-enter the Permissions Password (the one you entered above)
              OK - OK
Save the PDF to apply the security [notice that (SECURED0 will appear after the document title]

  • Need suggestion on locking down student imacs

Hello, I just inherited a handful of computer labs. 8 imacs each spread out between 5 schools. 3 labs have internet access and 2 labs do not. Since I'm a complete noob when it comes to Mac OS Security what would someone recommend as my first step to locking down the computers. The students have tons of shortcuts on the desktop, downloaded mp3's, movies, myspace, facebook etc..It's a mess. Is there any 3rd party software that can manage desktops or can Mac OS do it all?
    Thanks

    Thanks for that information!
I'm sure I will be calling AppleCare, but the problem is, they charge for the phone calls don't they? Because I don't have money to be spending to be on the phone with a support service.
In other things, it seemed like the only time my MacBook was working was when I had Snow Leopard without the 10.6.8 update download that was supposed to be done to prepare for OS X Lion.
When I look at the information of my HD it says that I have 10.6.8 but that was the install that it claimed to have failed and caused me to restart resulting in all of the repeated problems.
Also, because my computer is currently down, and I've lost all files how would that effect the use of my iPhone? Because if it doesn't get fixed by the time OS 5 is released, how would I be able to upgrade?!
