Large Aperture 2 Library Migration to Aperture 3, on a new Mac Pro
Hello,
I am upgrading from a PowerMac G5 to a Mac Pro and so I am going to also upgrade Aperture to version 3 at the same time. I am currently using a managed library on a 1.5TB RAID-1 array in my PowerMac. I am hoping to convert that to a referenced library during the same process.
My current plan is to do this:
1) Install and Update Aperture 2 on the Mac Pro.
2) Configure a new RAID-1 array on the Mac Pro for the referenced images
3) Copy Aperture library from PowerMac to Mac Pro
4) Before upgrading to Aperture 3, use the "Relocate Masters for Library" option to move every single master for the entire library to the new RAID-1 array on the Mac Pro
5) Install Aperture 3
6) Upgrade library on the Mac Pro
7) Turn on Faces and let it hammer away at that for a few days.
Anyway, that's the general idea on my idea. So here are my questions. Other insight is also very welcome.
1) My library is about 1TB and a little over 100,000 RAW images. Can I get a ball park estimate on how long this whole process (or at least the conversion part) might take?
2) Has anyone used the "Relocate Masters for Library" function before in Aperture 2 or 3? Does the function still exist in Aperture 3? Does it work better in one version or another? Is there a better way of migrating to a referenced library from a managed one?
3) Should I just go straight to version 3, upgrade, and migrate after that?
Anyways, that's about all I've come up with for questions so far. I'm sure I will have more as I move along with this process. Thanks for any help you all can provide.
Here is one more thing to consider - Do you want to re-process the RAW images to use all the new adjustments? If you do that will take a lot of time - more than upgrading the library but less than the Faces. I just completed the move from PPC to intel on the iMac scale. I don't plan to use faces - I have already keyworded all my images and I just didn't see how Faces would add anything as everyone says the accuracy is limited. But I did re-process all my RAW files - depending on the camera, they may look different so some choose not to re-process. Converting the library does not re-process. If you have used a lot of adjustments in the RAW files the re-processing can be very slow. Generally for any picture of mine that needed a lot of post-processing, I went right to PS. So I had little outside of a few of the standard sliders used on any of my RAW files.
My library is about 250 GB with 20,000 images - about 1/2 RAW. It took about 4 h to just move the files from an old FW 400 disk to the iMac, it took about 2 hours to upgrade the library, and it took another 4 to reprocess the 10,000 RAW. I am keeping a managed library until I outgrow the 2 TB disk in the iMac.

Migration Assistant and permissions issues with new Mac Pro
Hi There,
I've not had any significant issues with Migration Assistant in the past but I can't create a reliable system with my new Mac Pro.
After using Migration Assistant during the initial setup, my user account wasn't even transferred. I tried restarting but in the end, I followed these instructions to reset and run the assitant again: http://stationinthemetro.com/2013/11/10/make-mavericks-re-run-the-setup-assistan t
I've just finished running it for a second time, and while the user account is now on my new system, there are so many permissions issues that the system is unusable (I can't even run Safari). Creative cloud, 1Password, safari, Dropbox are all apps that give me Disk i/o or permissions errors.
If I look in the user folder, many directories within it have a red minus icon. I've tried fixing permissions using Disk Utility but something is not right.
In the past, the new system just boots like the old one but this time round, it asked me to create an account after Migration Assistant had finished - is this normal? I used the same username and password as before but I'm not sure Migration Assistantis working properly.
Does anyone know a full-proof way of fixing and transferring my account without having to spend hours downloading OSX for a full erase and install?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I didn't understand exactly what to put into AppleScript sorry (never used it before) - so I just ran the following from the Terminal:
$ echo $UID
$ sudo chown -R 503 ~
And restarted - everything works now - thanks heaps.
What had happened and is this something I did or did Migration Assistant just get confused?
I have 3 new Mc Pros to setup on Monday so just want to ensure those are hassle free.

Share aperture library with another aperture user
How do I share the same aperture library with another aperture user on a different computer each using separate aperture software? We have have tried using a hard drive, but the vault is not showing up to download.
are you trying to work simultaneously from the same library? I'm not sure Aperture will handle that one very well, but as I've never tried it I can't say for certain.
You may be able to "check out" projects from the main library to work on individually within your own personal libraries. When you're done w/ your work you would check the project back in to the main library for someone else to use.
I think the danger is in trying to access the same .plist or image at the same time as Aperture wouldn't know who's instructions to follow. -
"Best" configuration for new Mac Pro used for Aperture?
I'm getting ready to order a new Mac Pro and would like to configure it to optimize Aperture performance.
On CPUs - I have found no benchmarks which show whether Aperture would benefit from 2 quad core processors versus 1. Does anyone know of any benchmarks or have any experience using a single quad core? I don't want to spend $500 on a 2nd processor if Aperture can't use it.
On Graphics cards - I was sold on the GForce 8800, due to it's supposed blazing speed for gaming and it's larger on board memory. However, after reading the following review http://www.barefeats.com/harper10.html , these guys seem to imply that applications such as Aperture actually run faster with the standard Radeon 2600 video card! If anyone has any experience or opinions on this review, I'd love to hear them!
On memory - I know from experience that Aperture will use all of the physical memory you make available to it. I plan on ordering the standard 2GB from Apple, then adding 8GB from 3rd party for total of 10MB.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.I can only say that when faced with the same decision last month, I went with a 2.8 8-core/8800GT/10gb RAM/library stored on 2nd internal drive setup and am completely satisfied with Aperture's speed. Beyond satisfied, really, borderline thrilled to be honest. No beach balls, perfectly responsive adjustment sliders, smooth and quick scrolling through images (even with Quick Preview mode turned off). Aperture 2 definitely takes advantage of all 8 cores - I have MenuMeters installed and can watch its CPU usage across all 8 cores. Exporting, for example, is fast and uses all cores for background processing.
I have seen a couple small anomalies though...when moving photos around in a light table, I get some odd flashing artifacts on the right side of screen that could be graphics card related. Visually annoying but it doesn't affect performance. I'm also seeing some weird behavior with keywords not appearing in Tooltips and in the Viewer, but it's intermittent and is most likely a software bug and not my hardware setup. -
New Mac Pro 2.8 and Problems with Aperture

I just bought a new Mac Pro 2.8 with the standard 2GB of RAM. My main application is Aperture. Since I loaded it and pointed to my library, the system runs *very* slow when I am in Aperture. I get a lot of spinning wheels for everything I do ... including just switching between pictures. My library is ~130GB and when I tried importing my iPhoto 8 library, it crashed. Now when I try to delete the import project, Aperture hangs. I am very surprised by all of this. Any thoughts or suggestions?
An interesting side note, iPhoto with 140GB library works great.

Unfortunately Apple reps are seldom good counselors as regards application performance. They are after all retail sales people, not users. Better advice is available from user forums typically populated by folks with years of real-world usage experience as well as education beyond that typically found in retail sales.
RAM is inexpensive now, so IMO MPs should have more RAM, adding two 2-GB sized DIMMs as a minimum add. For heavy apps like Adobe CS or Aperture I recommend adding 8 GB RAM, always minimum 2-GB sized DIMMs to avoid wasting limited slots. IMO RAM is the cheapest performance enhancer and most of us handling heavy graphics will want even more RAM, all slots, over the life of a new MP.
I would recommend buying 4-GB sized DIMMs except that they currently cost much more per GB.
Aperture has always required an advanced graphics card for good performance, even with MP towers. Do not be surprised if adding RAM does not provide a magic bullet. If you use Aperture professionally you will want to add an 8800 GT card.
All that said, Aperture ran adequately on my MBP even with the stock 2 GB RAM. Odds are very high that the slowdown you observe is not simply hardware based. I strongly recommend that you carefully pursue every one of the points discussed in the excellent Bagleturf speed discussion, and especially get fully conversant with Previews alternative settings.
Please describe your hard drive(s) configuration, including how full, since mass storage also bears heavily on performance.

Bit dissapointed with the graphics options though - in the PC world you can get dual on one card Nvidia 7950GX2 cards which would absolutely destroy anything you can get for this machine.

After Migration to new Mac Pro, intermittent slow downs, SROD's
I started with a my intel mac mini, Leopard OS was installed on an external Firewire drive, most applications were installed on another partition of that same drive. I bought a new mac pro 8 core, and an additional firewire external drive that I set up as my Time Machine drive on my old mac mini. I did a full backup of my old mac mini system and then attached the time machine drive and the other external hard drive to my new mac pro. I used the migration assistant to transfer files to my new mac pro. However, now there appears to be something occuring between my internal mac pro hard drive and the old external hard drive from my mac mini. When using some applications, Itunes, Logic Pro, Firefox, the ap will hang and appears to be trying to access files from the old external drive. I hope I'm being clear with what the issue is. I'm thinking duplicate files on this external drive and my internal drive are causing some problems? I need to know how to repair the issue, and preserve my data files?

All the aps and data were migrated onto the internal HD in the mac pro, and the aps and files and directory structures, etc. are still also on the external drive that used to comprise the OS of my mac mini. I'm thinking that may be part of the issue, but I'm new to Mac and not certain of that or how to fix the issues.
Depending on how you did that, I'm not sure everything on those partitions got on to the new Mac's HD. Check that first, via the Finder.
Let's start with iTunes and/or iPhoto.
First see if you have the same stuff in both places. Use the Finder to see how large each is on the external HD, and compare that to the iTunes and iPhoto folders on your internal HD.
If they're not on your internal HD at all, use these instructions to move them:
Moving your iTunes Music folder
Moving your iPhoto library
If the versions on the external are newer than the ones on your internal, delete the ones on the internal and use those instructions to move from the external to the internal.
But don't delete the versions on the external just yet. Eject and disconnect it, and make sure everything's fine. It won't hurt to leave the data there for a while, especially as long as it's disconnected.
If the music or photos on your HD are the same, or newer, hold down the Option key while starting iTunes or iPhoto. That will give you a prompt where you can select which one you want to use.
Once you've selected the ones you want, eject and disconnect the external. Then use as many apps as you can, to see if everything works properly and all your data is found.
Without knowing what other apps you have, and how they work, I can't tell in advance whether any others will be looking for the external drive. If you get error messages, you'll have to deal with each app that seems lost.
I'd be inclined to keep the old external "on the shelf" for quite a while, just to be sure nothing got missed.
Have you started doing Time Machine backups of the new Mac yet? When you do, you'll get a prompt about whether to "re-use" the Mini's backups. See #B5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. You probably want to select "Re-use," especially if there's a considerable amount of space on your TM drive. -
Can I migrate/copy my iTunes configuration to a new Mac Pro?
I have been able to copy over the sparse-bundle backups and restore. But what I need to know is if I can copy over the entire configuration of iTunes (not just the music) such that my sync settings are retained (ie: sync only checked songs). I have a considerably large collection of music and there's no way I want to go through selection again. I just had my iPhone replaced, have a new cylinder Mac Pro to which I want to migrate this data.
I did perform an rsync of the Music directory structure to my new Mac Pro, but it appears to be missing settings (as I mention above). I imagine that's stored elsewhere.
Could someone elaborate?

I'm trying to connect my 30" Cinema Display to my new Mac Pro along with a new Apple 23'" monitor. The new Apple monitor is fine. On the cinema monitor everything is blown up pretty large. Any ideas on how to solve this?

How can I migrate data to new Mac Pro with only 1 monitor
I am ready to set up my new Mac Pro. I know how to migrate my files from my G5 using Firewire and making the new computer a target disk. My problem is, I have only 1 monitor. Is there an easy way around this, OR of not, can I use my Macbook Pro just a monitor and if so how?
If you make the new computer a FireWire Hard drive, the only thing on its monitor will be the firewire symbol. You don't need a monitor to see that.
But if you did, you could start the new computer up first, look at the firewire symbol, get a warm fuzzy feeling, disconnect the monitor and plug it into the old computer to make the transfers. -

I was bought a Mac book pro as a birthday gift from the Apple Store in Leicester, after completing the initial set up procedure, I noticed that the trash bin was full of some one's entire photo collection from 2003 to 2011.
This is entirely unacceptable for Apple: How long have Apple been fobbing of consumers who believe they were genuinely purchasing a 'new' Mac book?
How is it that I have someones entire photo collection on my 'branch new Mac Book Pro' - these photos included wedding photo's, birthday celebrations, family celebrations and children. Its a serious breach of data protection, it's an invasion of some poor persons privacy and private photo collection. What concerns me the most, is what could have happened if those photo's had fallen into the wrong hands. We managed to trace, locate and contact the person who the photo's belong to within 10 mins using information taken from their wedding album.
Understandably these people are also very distressed that their personal photos are on my brand new Mac Book pro.

I just migrate settings and software, include CC, from my PowerBook to a new Mac Pro. All the software download from CC is there and working, except for CC, and there is not way to install. I have try because every time I restar keep bothering asking for installation, (by the way, the link is not up to date). Will appreciate your help.
never migrate adobe software. it should be properly installed.
uninstall all the cc programs you can, clean and then reinstall per, Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
