Large black borders arond Canvas View

I have footage imported from a Canon XH-A1 at 720 x 480, when I drag it to the Canvas viewer it displays with large black borders around it and any exports look the same. Looks normal in Viewer. Also must be RENDERED to be viewable in Timeline, which did not used to be an issue - something has changed, but I am not sure what!
Capture preset is DV NTSC 48KHZ, camera is not in HD or wide screen mode. Footage seems to look OK if I import it into iMovie HD, not my preferred editor due to the length of clips being edited.

Sounds like you have standard definition material in a 4:3 format that you have put in a 16:9 project.
The solution is to change your project aspect ratio to 4:3
Recognize you will still have the black bars (called pillarboxing) when you play the material on a 16:9 TV. (The DVD player will generate them.)

• Black borders after screensaver view

These borders are frame-like and are basically on all my opened windows. They usually appear after a screensaver view, i.e. waking up mac from sleep. Not present initially after turning on. In addition to the borders, multicolored horizontal lines become visible on the top and bottom areas, sometimes even covering the dock. Also, they appear as lines but most of the times just a black shadow that eventually disappears whenever I try to run the cursor on them. Unit is fairly new and I’m pretty much in a panic mode. Please help anyone. Thanks.

Not good to hear. I'd get to an Apple store near you and make an appointment at the "genius" bar to show them what you are experiencing. The fact that running your cursor over them makes the shadows go away leads me to suggest you try repairing your disk permissions first and resetting the PRAM to see if those help first.
Good luck!

• The Quicktime 10.1 viewer adds black borders

Since updating to Lion, the Quicktime viewer adds borders to my pre-existing videos. No matter how I re-size the window the borders remain on the sides of my portrait aspect ratio videos.  They played just fine (borderless) before upgrading, now the black borders cover other parts of my presentation.  Anyone know how to make them go away.  It's a shame that they would induce such an unelegant feature.  Using Quicktime 7 for the time being, just moving the videos to the bottom of the viewing area to eleminate the controls.  VLC player doesn't loop and won't allow me to drag for random sizing. Just gives me 1/2 full, double-sized, etc.

And what aspect ratio are "your" videos?  Landscape?
Aha! Now I see what you are getting at. Still doubt this is a deliberately "added feature" but do consider it to be a bug introduced in QT v10.1. In my opinion it is likely due to fractional aspect ratios and is a problem similar to QT 7 pixel dimension problem when width is <348 pixels. Problem may be due to the fact that portrait views are still embedded as 1280x720  files (aspect 1.78:1) even though they are being displayed as 720x1280 (aspect 1:0.56). Have not run tests to determin an exact "break point" for bug, but have observed that all mixed number apects seem to display properly. You will also observe that as QT X switches to "Full Screen" for these portrait views, that the pillaring shrinks and disappears. Would definitely sugguest others report this in QT X feedback to see if it can be fixed.

• Audio but NO images show - black screen -up in the canvas viewer window????

Hi all,
I'm a newbie having problems with a file in FCP where the audio plays and but no image shows up in the Canvas window. I imported the audio from my camera and had some kind of a problem in the browser window where the sequence didn't show up with the actual length of time...it read 00:00:00. I reimported the quicktime file into FCP Express, and then it showed up fine. When I reopened it in FC Pro, this time, the sequence shows the full amount of time of the file, but I'm still getting all black in the canvas window. I'm at a loss to explain this. I have a feeling I did something wrong during the initial import, and so the actual source file is somehow corrupted. But when I open the source file in quicktime, it plays fine. It's only within FCP that it's all dark.
Help!!!!!
Thanks in advance

sounds like you do not have a source file that FCP recognizes.
What camera and what codec does it shoot? did you convert to a prores or standard QT format before or after ingesting?

• Settings dimensions - can't get rid of black borders

Hi
I'm using Final Cut Express 4.0.1. I have a 30sec quicktime movie that I need to import and then add some music too and then export with the same dimensions. The current dimensions are 1024x567. However even when I set dimensions to the custom setting of 1024x567 when exporting I end up with black borders at the top and the bottom of the movie. I think part of the problem is that I need to change settings in FCE before I export as when Im looking at the movie in the 'canvas' box it has those same black borders. However I cant seem find any where to change the main project settings...
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi
I tried to follow your instructions and this is what it looked like in FCE.

When I export it either as anamorphic or something else the black borders are still there.
The properties of the original clip are
Dimensions: 1024x576
codecs: AAC, H.264
Color profile: HD (1-1-1)
Is that what you were after?
Thanks!

• Canvas viewing and safe areas

Hello
I have many video cips in a time line, when I am not playing I see the safe zones displayed, when I play, they go away. Is there a way to continue to see safe zones as I play in the canvas. I am not sure that it is even supported, but if it is, I am not finding the selection to turn on.
thanks
les

A much easier workaround would be to create a guide in photoshop using the photoshop NTSC preset guides, import it into Final Cut and lay it in the top video track.
If you dont use Photoshop, you can apply the viewfinder filter (Effects/Video Filters/Video/Viewfinder) to the black slug in your Viewer, then drag it to the timeline and modify the scale and the aspect ratio to match safe title/safe action guides, put it on the uppermost video track, select it and goto Modify/Composite Mode and choose Add. Just remember to hide it before you Export or put to tape.

• Black edge around canvas footage

A friend of mine has been editing together his showreel on my system. when i came home he asked me why the footage in the canvas viewer was surrounded by a black edge...and I had to tell him: i don't know...
my first inclination was to check all the settings, both for the clips and the sequences, and they were all correct and matching each other.
what i noticed then was that if i put "show image+wireframe" in the canvas, i saw that each piece of footage was completely square, not slightly rectangular as I thought they should be...
the files need constant rendering, sometimes it doesnt want to render as if the files have been corrupted or something, but the play properly.
I am not sure where the files are from or what codec, etc, as my friend didn't know. all he knew whas that they were off a digibeta tape he had gotten from a respectable post-prod place.
I also know that two of the 'films' where originally on dv and the third one on HD.
I cannot make sense of this, anyone elese can?
-j-

EDIT My turn to be too slow... sorry Andy. END EDIT
Right click on one of his clips in the browser and go to Item Properties > Format.
Get out a note book and write down all the information you see (or do a screen grab or print screen – just make sure you have the information available to you.)
Now click in his time line and hit Command-Zero. Change the setting in the General tab to match the settings of the clips that you wrote down.
This might take a little trial and error especially if you aren't familiar with some of the terms, but you will get there.
When you do, render problems should disappear and the black edges should disappear.
Let us know.

• Black Borders Top and Bottom in iMovies

Hi,
I'm editing Quicktime files in iMovies 5.0.2. with a view to putting them on line as streaming film clips. Before I imported these files into iMovies, there were no black borders around the films, non at either the sides of the screen and non at the top or bottom (I cropped them off in MPEG streamclip when I was convering the files from .VOB files to Quicktime files).
After editing these Quicktime files I am compressing them via the 'File -share' function in iMovies. I am compressing them as Quicktime files using the 'Expert settings.' (I'll spare you all the details of exactly what setting I'm using)
My problem is, that although there are no black borders when I import these files into iMovies, as soon as they appear in iMovies there are black borders on the clips, both at the top and the bottom (though not at the sides).
I have tried different things during compression (such as checking and unchecking various boxes in 'expert settings - sizing options') but I still I cannot make a film that doesn't have these black borders both at the top and the bottom of the film (like what's called 'cine screen' I think)
I want to get rid of these black borders. Does anyone know how I can do this in iMovies?
Thanks.

Hi,
Thanks for the advice. Here's the latest with my 'black borders top and bottom in iMovies' problem:
I found out that if I converted the .VOB files into .DV files (using MPEG Streamclip) instead of converting them to Quicktime files, then when I import these .DV files into iMovies the black borders are no longer there. So it seems like the problem was something to do with Quicktime files in iMovies.
But then there was another problem:
After waiting quite a while for MPEG Streamclip to finish it's work of converting the .VOB files into .DV files, and then waiting a bit longer to import the .DV files into iMovies, I was ready to work on editing the clips. But whenever I added either a fade in or fade out to a clip, I saw that during the time of the fade in or out, the picture was all distorted with thin vertical lines running through the entire picture.
So I had to do more trouble shooting:
I went back to MPEG Streamclip to have a little play around in there. When I made the .DV files before I used the compressor setting DVC Pro 50, so I changed this to the DVC Pro 25. I made a short .DV clip using this compressor and tried it out in iMovies and there was no problem with the vertical line distortion. Just to make sure I made another small .DV clip using DVC Pro 50 as before, imported that into iMovies and again, during the fade in/out effects this distortion came back again. So it seems like I sorted that problem out too.
Ian.

• Large black regions obscure CNiGraph3D plots

I am trying to plot 3D mesh data in dynamically created CNiGraph3D objects within a modal Wizard window in an MDI application. The Wizard window is a CPropertyPage object within a CPropertySheet (in Wizard mode).
The meshes are being viewed in the XY plane only and there can be from 1 to 20 CNiGraph3D objects on the wizard page at any one time. Each graph object has the same dimensions although the graphs are resized if any are dynamically added or removed. Scroll bars are added to the wizard page if the number of viewable graphs exceeds the available space.
The problem occurs when scrolling is attempted. A large black region can appear over the whole width of a graph obscuring the mesh plot. When you attempt to intera
ct with the obscured graph an unhandled exception / access violation occurs and the application crashes. I have traced the crash in debug mode and it comes from OpenGL32.dll.
I have Visual Studio Service Pack 4 installed. Other Measurement Studio objects that I'm using work fine so I'd rather see if I can get help with my current configuration before updating (and changing) my system to SP6.
Any help with this would be appreciated.
Thanks,
David

Dear David,
The same thing kind of happened in HiQ
This issue is likely related to your PC's video driver. The 3-D graph in HiQ 4.x for Windows leverages OpenGL, a 3D graphics standard that can rely either on your video hardware or software.
Try each of the following suggestions in turn in an effort to correct the problem.
1) Try turning up the hardware acceleration in device manager for the graphics card, then restart the machine and run the example again.
2) If you are running Windows 98 or Windows 95, try changing the Video acceleration feature to "None." To do this, go to the display settings page in your control panel and choose the Settings tab. Click the Advanced button, and on the next dialog, choose the Performance tab. Move the acceleration
tab to the far left.
3) Try switching to a standard VGA video driver. If the 3D graph works, the problem is likely a bug in your video card driver; make sure that you have the latest driver for your video card.
4) Try switching color depth or display resolution. If the 3D graph works, the problem is likely a bug in your video card driver; make sure that you have the latest driver for your video card.

• Does FCE have a full monitor canvas view prior to rendering?

Hi,
I want to see a large screen view instead of the small canvas view. Can I blow up the canvas view to a large size, like as big as my mac monitor?
Thanks,
humbucker

Hi(Bonjour)!
Yes you can use the VIEW-->video out-->digital cinema desktop preview command and monitor on your mac screen(sometimes you need to use the refresh video device command to gain access to digital desktop. Displaying +standard def miniDV+ on a mac screen may display bad quality as standard def in small frame dimension.
Or
Use your camcorder as an analog interface to monitor via firewire on external TV set or broadcast monitor. Standard def only. And the quality will be there as TV set has less resolution than your mac screen.

• PAL sequence shows strange markings in canvas viewer window

I have a DV PAL clip in a DV PAL sequence. I have it rendered in the timeline and did a couple of simple edits. Even before I did the edits, I could not get the clip to display in the canvas viewer. I get some green dots here and there, the occasional green check mark and an occasional yellow exclamation mark in that window. What am I doing wrong?
MikeR

One of my little edits was fading in from black. In the process I blasted the video levels way up.

• I plugged my macbook pro into an external monitor, then unplugged it later and now it is stuck with black borders on top and bottom and zoomed out like it is still on the monitor. How do I fix it?

I started using my external monitor with my macbook pro and as soon as I plug it in it to the monitor it adjusts the screen by zooming out a bit and creating about 3/4 of an inch black borders on the top and bottom of the screen. But these dont show up on the monitor so I assumed it was fine. But when I took it off the monitor, the borders were still there like it was still on the monitor. Any hellp? Hi aefulcher,
It sounds like you had the external display set to mirror the internal display so the resolution(s) were changed to match each other.
