Large brick house - looking to extend wi-fi coverage

Hello,
My home is all brick single floor construction which means that it is next to impossible using apple's star configuration and the present Airport technology to set the system up to cover the entire house.  Even with multiple AEBS and AX units the best i can do is cover about 50%.
I just bought a Belkin 500 mbps powerline network adapter and am hoping this will finally give me internet in the rear of the house.  One end of the powerline system would be connected to the main AEBS, where the cable modem signal enters the house.  The other powerline unit would be connected in a bedroom at the other end of the house, to another AEBS or AX unit.  I am hoping i can get the second Airport transmitter to transmit internet to the bedrooms in that area.
But i'm not sure this will work.  Would anyone out there be able to tell me if this set-up actually would work, or if not help me find an alternative solution?  Otherwise I am going to have to order a second cable modem from my local provider and fork over another $49 a month into perpetuity.
Help!  (And thank you in advance).

does this configuration work, at least in theory?  I am not connecting the AEBS to the extender AEBS/AX using ethernet, but rather using the powerline.
Yes, this is the theory behind powerline. But, you will need some short Ethernet cables to connect the Apple devices to the powerline adapters.
This may be a dumb question but I'm not sure how these things are intended to work, and all the literature i've read on them discusses hooking them up to individual network devices, like game consoles or wi-fi'd DVD players.
If you look at the documentation with the adapters you will see that you would connect a short Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your main router to the powerline adapter, which is plugged into an AC socket near the main router.
On the other end of the house, you would install another powerline adapter in the AC socket and connect another short Ethenret cable to the WAN "O" port on the Apple router at that location. The Ethernet cables can be any length that you need.
If you are not sure how to configure the Apple routers, this support document will provide the details:

I can't get a signal through whole house because of a brick wall   What range extender do you recommend to be used with my wireless router ( apple brand)

Very few 3rd party wireless extenders will work with an Apple router, so your best bet is always to use an extender that is the same brand as the main router. An AirPort Express is a popular choice for this type of application with another Apple router.
If you had a Cisco router, then a Cisco extender would be your best bet.  Same for Netgear, etc.
But......a wireless extender can only "extend" the quality of wireless signal that it receives, and not much of a wireless signal is going to make it through a brick wall, so whether any extender might do what you want is open to question.
You won't know whether an extender using wireless to connect will work to your satisfaction in your home until you actually try it out in your home.
The performance will always be much better if you can connect the extending device back to the main router using a wired Ethernet cable connection.
If it is not possible to run the Ethernet cable, a pair of Ethernet power line adapters might be able to send the signal over the existing AC power lines in your home. The theory with these devices is that you already have the wiring in place, you just need the adapters.
In practice though, things do not always work as well as the theory might suggest, so if you decide to try a pair of adapters, it might be a good idea to understand the store's return policies before you buy.

  • Lost ipod in house looked for over 1 week,

lost ipod touch in house looked for over 1 week with no success, i have not registered it to icloud any suggestions in finding it?

Think like a 2 year old
Look in the nooks and crannies where he was playing with it. Or give him some new treasure and see if he toddles off to put it where he put the touch. I'd look under stuff, behind cushions, in baskets....there will be no logic. He picked it up, toyed with it a bit, set it down as soon as his attention was diverted.

  • I want to extend my wireless coverage.

I want to extend my wireless coverage.  I have an Airport Express (AE) that is at least 5 years old, possibly older, which is connected by Ethernet from my ISP's router.  I've been uninterested in upgrading its software because the last time I did, 3 years or so ago, the unit regularly dropped out even though the light remained green and I had to reboot it to get it working - almost daily.
The upshot is that it is working well at the moment with antiquated software.
I just bought a brand new AE and want to extend the coverage on my wi-fi network wirelessly. I understand that this should be easy to do but I have a few questions before I begin.
Should I leave the old unit where it is and add the new unit to it or should I put the new unit first in line at the end of the ethernet cable?
I'm concerned that I'll have to start all over because I don't have a record of the password I used to set the unit up using the airport utility.  The network itself is unprotected by a password intentionally.  I'm concerned that if the new unit goes in first place, at the end of the ethernet cable, and requires the current software, that the older unit will not work.
Get Info reveals the following about my current Airport Express:
Card Type:     AirPort Extreme  (0x14E4, 0xE9)
      Firmware Version:     Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.106.98.81.22)
      MAC Address:     28:37:37:19:82:96

    I'll appreciate your help.

Should I leave the old unit where it is and add the new unit to it
You can't. The older AirPort Express has only one Ethernet port, which is connected to your ISP's router.
Remove your older Express and set it aside for the time being. Connect the new AirPort Express to the router and make it work. Once that task is complete we can discuss the possibility of adding your older Express to extend the range of your new Express's network.
Five years old places it on the cusp of the original 802.11b/g - only Express, and the first 802.11n Express, so you need to determine which one it is before attempting to configure it. Also, the AirPort information you posted is not for the Express, it is for your Mac's wireless card. Your Mac can use any AirPort Base Station but your OS X version must be determined as well as your older Express's model number. Look on its case for a four digit model number preceded by the letter A.

  • Can't save multiple folders to external drive. Get: "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." when dragging large folders to mac os extended journalled external drive from OS 10.6.8

    Hi
    I am feeling  VERY desperate!
After losing an external drive [dont ask....]  -   I got  another one :  2TB WD formatted properly [ OS extended journalled for mac ] ready for action to move  my thousands of files and images and ppts in hundreds of folders across from the laptop to this drive because I travel a bit with the laptop and this is too risky not to back up at home.
But this message came up after starting on moving folders across [** and not straight away, sometimes after moving  a folder  when  4 of 6 gb of files across  then the message comes up  = very frustrating]:
"The operation can’t be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items."
I am  dragging mixed sometimes large complex folders to this  os extended journalled external drive from my mac book pro OS 10.6.8  - it would take decades to move items one by one or even folder by folder and really confusing.
I have  dragged-copied  various small folders and files across successfully, but it is only working 50:50 and I can't leave machine with the idea of things copying eg: overnight - it just won't work....
I have been browsing google and find some people describing in CODE how they overcome this 'message'   .... but  I  [and I guess some other viewers of this in future & also in desperation]  would need  instructions for beginners....  to try this type of thing.  I don't know any code.
How can this be happening - I feel ANGRY at APPLE !!!!  for not posting easy fix instructions yet re; this, or better still  updating software so it doesn't happen [ that I can find at least  !!! ] .   There seem to be hundreds of people stuck with this stupid message and inability to back up their projects etc.
    Can anyone help ?
    Many thanks

    15 August 2011

    hi Samberl
thanks a lot for the fast reply.
I was dragging folders from main folders on the laptop-desktop  onto the external drive icon - to copy them across....
Your suggestion sounds very promising -  I didn't know about 'cloning'.
Yes the idea is to backup the laptop -    I thought I would just move it all now, new - and then keep saving/dragging physically   across to the new drive myself each day or two...
Would this be the sizeof the internal hard drive = c.500 gb  ?   =   under the HD icon on desktop is written  :
    " 499.76gb , 311.5 gb free  "
I can erase and start agin on the new external drive - so this plan is to make two partititions, rather than the one at present, and make one of them 500 gb ?
I have found CCC [carbon copy cloner] googling - looks good.
When CCC site says it backs up  the hard drive - would this  mean all my files  [over 100 gb] that are mostly  in folders on the desktop, plus the others in itunes, iphotos etc found in the HD icon,  would all copy across successfully [wherever they are in the computer ]  ?
thanks again, hope you can clarify these things and then I will go for it.
It would be great and amazing if this 'lack of permission' message doesn't show up in the process of doing this ccc transfer - hopeful!

  • Any way to make text larger in Photoshop CS 5 Extended?

I recently upgraded from CS3 and the tool labeling text is too small to be able to see on the toolbars. The icons seem smaller too. I need to use a magnifying glass now and didn't need to do that with CS3. I did look through Photoshop's prefs (the main ones, accessible by pulling from the menu under Photoshop's name), but couldn't find an option for altering the display. (I have "huge size" font selected for the font selection in the display for font choices--that's not the problem.) It appears from here that the programming for Photoshop's basics has just miniaturized everything. I haven't made any alterations to my computer or screen that could account for the problem, so I'm supposing that everyone has that? I had assumed it must be a problem with running Photoshop CS5 on Leopard, but the upgrade to Snow Leopard didn't help.
I'm aware that the operating system has a system pref for zooming. I've tried that once in awhile for something other; I think that using the system's zooming while trying to operate in Photoshop will be more inconvenient than using a magnifying glass.
My eyesight is imperfect, but it wasn't perfect on CS3 either. I'm running Photoshop on the same computer & monitor as when previously running CS3: 24" iMac 2.8 GHz with 4 GB RAM.
    Mary

Another thread on new enhancements might be a good thing for the Photoshop community, but right now, I just want to use Photoshop without having to use a magnifying glass. I could do that if my installation of Photoshop were right (defining "right" as being similar to what I can see others running Macs have with CS5). The labels that ought to appear in a bold typeface aren't bold on my Mac; it's almost as if I were running Photoshop on a UNIX or Windows machine (at least, the way I'd imagine Photoshop might look in a different environment).
I don't expect to be buying Adobe CS6 at any point, so even if Adobe were to add that nice little wrinkle to its programming it wouldn't help me. But I doubt that I personally would need it... if only my installation were right. I did install the latest update and it had no effect. Photoshop displayed this tiny unreadable type interface for me from the first time I opened it and ever after that time, no matter what I've done.
I'm used to going through all the prefs just after installing a new application, and that's what I did with Photoshop, setting Preferences-->Interface, Pulldown under UI font sizes to "Large" (though Large might have been the default).
I thought it might be interesting to fool with this Interface UI pulldown preference a bit. I opened, altered that preference, and quit the app three different times to look at font size each time upon reopening the app. My Photoshop won't show a bold labeling typeface at any of the three settings (small, medium, or large). The Small setting will make the font size a bit smaller than the medium, but the Large setting won't make the medium size even the tiniest bit larger.
So between the lack of a proper bold font display and the unresponsiveness to a Large typeface preference, it looks as if my Photoshop CS5 has been hacked to make the application unusable for someone like me who can't see tiny type. Nice.
I opened Photoshop using BBedit, trying to find the place in the programming that controls the font being used and its size. I couldn't find the place, but if I could have found the spot in the programming that controls this functionality, I'd just have input some different, bolder font for the tool labels.
Unless someone thinks of something else I might try, the solution I'll use will be to change the display screen in the system preferences from 1920 x 1200 pixels to 1344 x 840. I don't think that's going to be very practical, but perhaps is a bit more practical than using a magnifying glass. I've already updated Photoshop, dumped all Photoshop's preferences and redone them all. No luck there.
I guess I might have been better off not spending the money on the upgrade, though one glance at the masking improvements in CS5 over CS3 lets me know that Photoshop CS5 is a dream of an application. I just really wish I had the application I paid for.
Thanks to everyone who posted trying to help.
    Best wishes,
    Mary

  • Large font titles look broken after rendering

I'm having a problem when trying to create large, frame-filling titles in Final Cut Pro X. They look fine before FCPX starts rendering, but afterwards, there are chunks missing from the corners of certain letters. The problem is the same with various fonts. The font size is 580 and I'm using the 'custom' title. The images attached show what the title looks like before rendering (fine) and after (broken). I've tried exporting as a master file to see if it's just a problem with the preview, but the title still looks broken in the exported file.

    Clacktastic wrote:
Ah, that's a shame. Is there any way around this? Perhaps I could somehow turn the title into a transparent image and replace the title with that? I can't actually wait for Apple to fix the bug as I've got a deadline and need to get my video published!
Yes, you can do that if the title is static. Create the text you want in an image, and bring the image into FCP X.
You can make the letters transparent in the still image software or, easier perhaps, use the blend modes or create a key in FCP

  • Extending Airport Extreme coverage

I just purchased the new Airport Extreme 2013.  Wonderful router, but I need to extend the network since some areas are still out of reach (big old house). Can I do it using something like the Dlink DIR505 router?... thanks

Hi Kappy - don't want to OT derail things here BUT what's happened to WDS mode ?
The reason why I ask is that Im extending my wifi network by using 2 N AExpress and 1 G AExpress. And am having some issues.
The G device doesnt seem to be able to talk to the new Extreme. The Extreme sees it over the network. There is no option to Extend for the G device - only to Join or Create. Everything is configured correctly and the light comes back green however there is no Internet connection.
The 2 N expresses are able to join in extend mode (no way in Participate in WDS, tho, I guess they've changed it) but Im quite sure they're not actually extending the network as signal strength remains the same whether they're powered on or off in close proximity to iPads or iPhones.
    cheers r

  • I am trying to connect an airport extreme to extend my wifi coverage and it doesn't work

I hope someone can help me.
I have an Apple Airport extreme gen 5.  I have a BT router/modem that I connect to my broadband and its signal is OK but not great.  I have multiple apple devices, a windows PC, and a Panasonic smart TV.
I also use Belkin poweline adaptors to attach the TV and apple TV to my network - its flaky.
I was trying to attach the airport extreme to a powline adaptor in the lounge to extend my wireless network - it was green for a while but then flashed orange and stopped working.
I have now reattached it directly to my router in the same room with an Ethernet cable and still get the orange light and the airport utility keeps asking to attach to the WAN port but then nothing works - I can still acccess the internet through my existing bt modem/router.
    Any ideas please?

Click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons
Make sure that the setting for Wireless Mode is set to Create a wireless network
The Wireless Network name would be the same name as the BT network
The Wireless Security would be the same setting that the BT router is using....should be WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA Personal
The Wireless Password would be the same password as the BT network
    Verify Password
    Click the Internet icon
Click the Internet Connection tab just below the icon
The setting for Connect Using should be Ethernet
The setting for Connection Sharing should be Off (Bridge Mode)
Click the Update button at lower right of the window and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
Power off both the BT modem/router and the AirPort
    Wait a minute
Power up the BT device first for a few minutes
    Then, power up the AirPort
Everything above is a "quick fix".  If that does not work, we will have to start all over again from scratch.

  • Adding 802.11b/g AX(s) to multi-Airport Extreme 802.11n roaming network

First, a thanks to folks like Tesserax and Bob for the great ideas on this forum -- the questions & answers I've read have helped me to date, though I still have a question!
My home wireless network today consists of:
One fifth-generation AEBS running in 802.11n only (5 GHz) / 802.11n only (2.4 GHz) mode, on channels 149 (automatic)/11 (automatic) -- provides DHCP services
One second-generation AEBS running in 802.11n only (5 GHz) mode, on channel 157 (automatic) -- bridge mode
There is a wired home network with Cat5e and a gigabit switch in the basement.  30 down/5 up DOCSIS 3.0 service through Time Warner Cable, upstream from the fifth-gen AEBS.  The AEBS units are connected in roaming mode via Ethernet.
Using the Airport Utility on my iOS devices, I'm getting "excellent" (59-65 Mb/s) connectivity when I am near either of the AEBS units.  It is a large brick house built in the 1920s, and while there are now no dead zones in the house, there are areas where I drop down to 10-15 Mb/s per the Airport Utility.  Unfortunately, the two AEBSs are at opposite ends of the house near external walls, one on first floor and one on second -- and the first floor rear AEBS needs to be where it is to serve a breakfast room and sunroom, while the home office AEBS needs to be where I have two Ethernet drops as the cable modem and switch are in the basement.
Before I added the fifth-gen AEBS, I had the older AEBS and two 802.11b/g Airport Express (AX) devices, also in roaming mode.  I wasn't thrilled with performance, and while performance is much better with the two AEBS model, I'm wondering about the benefits of redeploying my AX devices elsewhere in the house on the roaming network -- on the theory that I should be getting better 802.11g performance from a device close enough to get max speeds than I am from a farther-away 802.11n AEBS.
However, I am concerned about whether adding back in 802.11b/g devices on 2.4 GHz would restrict the performance of my 802.11n network?  I am assuming that might happen because I have 802.11n running on both frequencies... if I stepped back on the fifth-gen AEBS to 802.11n only (5 GHz) / 802.11b/g  [or a similar setting] on that device, will that help?  Or, am I running the risk of other cross-talk or interference -- or simply of my home network devices being befuddled by multiple access points in a single house?
Alternatively, I could try to replace my 802.11b/g AX units with 802.11n ones -- howeever, having just bought a new AEBS this week, that would encounter cross-talk with my Spousal Budgetary Compliance Unit (SBCU) and I could end up crashing the entire household....
    Thoughts and ideas appreciated!

If you use the "b/g" AirPort Express devices in a roaming setup, any computers, iPads, etc in close proximity will connect at maximum "g" wireless speeds.
It's really not possible to predict the actual results in advance. The increased wireless coverage might tend to compensate for the lower speeds that would naturally occur due to signal drop off if you did not use the AirPort Express devices at all.
As long as the wireless access points are in a separate room, or separated by 25-30 feet or so from other access points, there should be no confusion that occurs with your laptop trying to connect. It will pick the strongest signal as it moves through the house.
I think the bottom line here is that this is one of those things where you just will not know unless you try. If the Ethernet cabling is already in place, it should not take long for you to find out how things are working.

  • WiFi Setup in Large House multiple Apple Hardware Devices -Help Please!

    Hello:
I have tried to solve my wifi issues over the past months, but I am stuck. I recognize that this is a little involved, so let me apologize in advance.
I do not expect someone to be willing to take the time regarding this, but if someone could at least read this and give me some general pointers, that would be great.
Highlights of current problems - we cannot consistently print documents from our printer, which is connected via an airport express (note that the airport express is wired to the internet with Cat 5e, we cannot consistently stream itunes music, we have too many separate wifi networks - we prefer one wifi network, if possible. Most recently, I have been trying to extend or join my own existing networks, and I do not understand the difference in terminology, and in any event, neither attempts worked as I kept getting error messages and the amber lights stayed on.
Goals - We would like to have seemless wifi throughout our old, larger sized house with ability to stream iTunes music from an apple computer or via Airtunes from an iPhone, and print from any computer or from any iPhone or iPod, and ability for guests to join wifi with a password and have such connection be good throughout our house. I prefer not to have to manually select different wifi networks as we move around the house with an iPhone or Macbook Pro. Also, I often get prompted for wifi passwords (depending on which of my airport expresses comes into range) and I would like to avoid putting the passwords in each time. Or one signal gets weak and my device does not know that it should switch to the wifi network with better reception. I would like to be able to walk from point A to point B and have my wifi connection work continuously behind the scenes. And I would like to be able to play music on receiver, and control same via our iPhone and iPods.
    Hardware -
Basement: Verizon Fios wireless Router, Ethernet Network switch with multiple Cat 5e ethernet cables going to different locations in the house.
1st Floor: Macbook Pro connected to internet via ethernet; 1 previous generation Airport Express connected to internet via ethernet, with a printer cable going from Airport Express to a printer and an audio capable going from Airport Express to a receiver. If possible, I would like that same Airport Express to provide wireless access. I also have a non-apple wifi device that is recessed in the ceiling, I think it is by On Q/Legran and this non-Apple wifi device is connected via ethernet.
2nd Floor: Older generation iMac (purchased in around 2005) that is not connected to ethernet, 1 Airport Express (new version) connected to ethernet; 1 additional Airport Express (new version) connected to ethernet; 2nd MacBook Pro which relies on Airport Express.
3rd Floor: Apple Time Capsule connected via ethernet cable, Apple TV sitting right next to Apple Time Capsule, with HDMI cable running from Apple TV to home theater receiver.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!

Hello JoJo121. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
To achieve having "one" wireless network throughout the house, we just need to configure all of your base stations for a "roaming" network. With this type of network, a laptop could literally roam from room-to-room and still be on the "same" network.
You already have one of most important parts of this type of network and that is you have an Ethernet infrastructure where you want wireless to be provided.
The FiOS router should not need any configuration changes.
Setup the 802.11b/g AirPort Express Base Station (AX), 802.11n AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn), & Time Capsule (TC) as bridges:
o AirPort Utility > Select the base station > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
For each AX, AXn, & TC in the roaming network:
o Connect to the same subnet of the Ethernet network, i.e., they should all connect back to the Ethernet switch at the FiOS router.
o Provide a unique Base Station Name
o The Network Name should be identical
o If using security, use the same encryption type (WEP, WPA, etc.) and password.
o Make sure that the channel is set at least three channels apart from the next base station to prevent Wi-Fi interference.

  • Network Extender Stopped Working - Resolution Keeps Getting Pushed Back

I have had good service with a network extender for about 5 months until last Wednesday (Sept 28).  Actually, I had acceptable service in my home  WITHOUT a network extender until Verizon started testing 4G in my area last spring/early summer.  Then, my service went from okay to NONE.  After numerous calls to tech support and escalations, an alleged "field test" was conducted on my street.  Conclusion: Foliage from trees causing signal loss.  Solution: $125 for a network extender.  Foolishly (as I later learned) I payed the $125 (many people claim to have received the free after reporting numerous problems and threatening to cancel service)...anyawy, last Wednesday I noticed @ home that my signal was varying from 3G to 1x, and the signal bars were all over the place.  My phone is showing 1x @ about -70 dbm, and either NO 3G or with a signal of -120 dbm or worse. On rare occasions I will get a brief 4G indication.  I did the usual, removed battery from phone, etc.  but later learned that my wife's phone was doing the same thing. According the the latest Verizon map I an deep within a 4G coverage area, yet can hardly get a signal of any kind within a 1/4 mile of my house without the extender.  While troubleshooting on my own and with Verizon tech support, I power cycled the network extender (all lights are on as they are supposed to be), ran the 8x8 VIOP test on my DSL service (it passed with flying colors), reset my DSL modem and router, refreshed DHCP on the router, checked all settings on both Verizon phones in the house.  Dialing #48 indicates that I am within network extender coverage, yet the signal varies from 1x to 3G/5 bars constantly as I sit in the room with the extender.  Several calls to tech support, two escalations, power increased on extender, resolution promised within 24 hours, then 48 hours, now today was told 72 hours.
My questions are:  Why suddenly signal loss to two phones from the extender after ruling out 2 phones and ISP, why such a poor signal at my home (not just inside...anywhere within a quarter mile) in the first place when the coverage map shows I'm well within the 4G coverage area, why is the resolution being pushed back every time I call to inquire?
Any help, especially from Verizon, would be appreciated.

I started on another string, but reading this tells me we have the same problem.  Got the extender, everything programmed, phones indicating connection to the extender network, but now I have the same issue.  My wife's Iphone shows great signal, but the words are clipped as well. My Droid X has no better signal strength indicated than before, (yes, it gives the short double beep so it must be connected) and the voice quality is bad enough that one can't understand the caller.  I can get signal directly when outside well enough to make decent phone calls.  When I go outside and away from the extenders range voice transmission returns to normal---though occasionally I will drop a call in normal transmission.  I have good 3G outside (3-4 bars though sporatic), but as soon as I try to make a call the signal drops to one bar on 1x. Therefore, the reason I got the extender so we could make calls inside the house rather than walking outside in subfreezing weather!!
Same routine,...called Tech service and got a rep.  She couldn't do anything but tell me that it had to be the "contruction materials in my house".  Said we must have brick contruction,....no, it's vinyl siding. I did say that we had a foil backed insulation material surrounding the house and she quickly affirmed that had to be the problem. It was blocking the signal inside the house and the extender wouldn't pick it up.
But if the extender is in the window, doesn't that solve the problem?  Point---if we stand at a north or east window (we have large windows on both sides) we are able to get a signal on the phone, but the service is "iffy." Again the reason for the extender.  She repeated again "Verizon can't do anything about the contruction materials in our house."  Then she said that the extender is designed for "people that live along the 'coasts' that have weak signal!!??" That was a hint that it wouldn't work in the midwest. Her final comment was that the extender wouldn't work if we had weak signal in the area(interesting that was said after her indicating that it was designed for customers with "weak" signal.) When I asked why it was connected to the internet, I didn't get an answer. I could tell I wasn't going to get information to help so I thanked her and gave up.
So were these excuses or reasons?  The local store that told me to get the extender knows absolutely nothing---"just call tech service."  I've had calls to 611 now three times, reprogrammed, reset the unit, and it still doesn't work.  I'm not even going to ask anyone in the forum to help as I'm sure that others are just as frustrated.  Verizon claimed the best technology and customer service when we switched a year ago.  We were shown on the map well within the 3G territory, but quickly found out that those maps are not accurate.  While we live on the prairie (flat land), our normal signal goes from 1x to 3G and back constantly. At night the signal is weaker than daytime. Sometimes we have 3, even 4 bars of 3G and 2 minutes later 1 bar of 1x.  ( I'm sitting here watching my phone do that right now.)     The only solution is to go back to ATT. We dropped calls with them, but at least could talk in the house with their phones.  It's costly to switch as we have to buy out the contract, but this service is unacceptable.
The real issue is credibility of the company.  I was told that we would be far more satisfied with Verizon service; and that if there were ever any problems---they would be fixed.  That wasn't a true statement.  I wish there was a credible alternative to both ATT and Verizon in our area.

  • How do you extend the reception range on a Time Capsule?

Live in an older home and looking to extend the wifi range of my Time Capsule.  Any advice?

You need to buy another Apple router.. express, extreme .. I guess even another TC.. and run it in extend wireless mode.. this is  just wireless repeater by another name.
Better is to run ethernet and use a second Access Point.. AP which can be any brand under the sun. Faster and you can buy stuff that actually will cover the whole house.. the fact of the matter is, Apple Routers are NOT wifi power houses. They are mediocre at best.
