Large Disk I/O for small number of users

Hi Guys,
I'm trying to figure out why my Outlook 2010 Clients are having a bad experience with their connections to the server often timing out.  You know the popup message in the system tray that says "Outlook is trying to communicate with server"
I'm running SBS 2011 with the usual Exchange 2010 underneath.  It was installed last October and has been slowly getting worse over recent months.  All my service packs and updates are applied both on the server and on the workstations.
I have been searching for solutions for a while.  I have run the Exchange BPA and corrected any minor reported problems.
I'm running the server as a VM and nothing seems to be overloaded or poorly configured. The host server has two RAID sets one make up of 10k drives and the other of 15k drives.  The VHD's for the OS are on the 15k drives and the data VHD is on the 10k.
I have upped the virtual RAM on the SBS Server VM to 32GB which is the Maximum.
Task manager reports 4.9GB as being Free and 4.4GB on Standby. So RAM isn't the problem
I the bottleneck appears to be Disk I/O
When I look in the resource monitor I see constant disk I/O around 10-15 MB/s all day.
It does slow down to a couple of MB during the night.
Most of the activity is on the Mailbox.edb and PublicFolder.edb
Currently the public folder has 10mb/s read and 250KB/s write
And the Mailbox folder has 8mb/s read and 10KB/s write
These values are often up and down all over the place but id's say constantly high.
I don't have a lot of users.  Say around 35 active. Some with hand held devices as well.  A few are remote but the majority on the same Gigabit LAN as the server.  Actually I'm at the far end of a 1Mbps connection and have far less
trouble than most.  However I often see my connection silently fail over to https.
I do have a largish public folder database with around 1100 sub folders (all at one level) containing mostly archived emails.
The only other non middle of the road thing we do is with shared calendars.  Multiple users connect to different shared calendars.  Most would only have one or two calenders open at a time but a few users would have 10 or 12 open concurrently.
Any ideas how I can diagnose what is going on with my poor exchange server performance?
Thanks
David

I think I finally found the answer or at least a big part of the cause.
It is Background Virus Scanning.
Every time the virus definitions are updated Exchange / AVG launches a full scan of the entire Mailbox Store and Public Folder Store. This can occur more than once per day during business hours!
I found this link that relates to background virus scanning.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998674(v=exchg.80).aspx
The steps to disable background virus scanning from that article are as follows.
Open a registry editor, such as Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe.
Navigate to:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\VirusScan
In the right-hand pane, double-click the BackgroundScanning value.
In the Value Data field, change the value to 0.
Close the registry editor, and restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, and your antivirus software services for the change to take effect.
There is still lots of disk I/O during the day but this was the cause of the lions share.
Thanks to all those who assisted and I hope this helps someone else.

  • Public Folder not accessible from outlook for a number of users(Impacted users Expanding)

    Hi ,
    We have a Exchange 2013 Server with both Mailbox and Cas Roles in it. We are currently migrating the mailboxes to a new server as the old one had some OS issue.
    We use a number of Public folder, since the past two days, a number of users are not able to access public folders from outlook 2013( able to access through OWA) The issue is expanding to other users now. Please let me know some options to arrest this and
    resolve the same.
    When I try to check for any issues from ECP. I go to the public folder and click manage, I get the 505 error. Pls help
    Thanks,
    Vivek

    Hi,
    Based on the description, you moved public folder mailboxes and user mailboxes to another server. After that, some users couldn't access public folders in Outlook. You can use the Get-PublicFolderStatistics cmdlet to retrieve statistical information about
    public folders.
    And please check if there is any error message when these affected users access public folders in their Outlook.
    Since users can access public folders via OWA, I recommend you test Outlook connectivity using Test Email AutoConfiguration tool.
    In order to troubleshoot this issue more efficiently, I suggest you post the error message that you encountered in ECP for further research.

  • IPhoto exports small number of photos to desktop or thunbdrive.  I'm unable to transfer a 360-photo album to thumbdrive so I tried fixes listed in other iPhoto SC letters.  I batch organized album files w/ seq. numbering. Works for small number files.

    What are the details about your computer and OS?

    Hi TD,
    I tried what you suggested on photos that were not exported in my previous attempts.  I found all orginal photo files within the folders that were associated with the specific days when the photos was taken.  That iPhoto action seems to work.  I had not previously tried that iPhoto command so learned something new.
    Do you have any other ideas of what to try?  Worse comes to worse, I could export 26 seperate folders of Exports from my iPhoto album on my hard drive and separately put them onto the thumb drive.  But, as you know, we have to BEAT the Apple software and computer.  I know that it becomes somewhat of an obsession.
    Have a good day.

  • Time Machine explanation for small hard drive user

              Hey, thanks in  advance for the answers. I have several questions about Time Machine that I just can't seem to sift through the answers on these forums to have answered. I have only 95 GB of files saved on my macbook but a large portion of them are photos and songs.
    1. Will Time maching will back these up so that if I were to crash this computer or get a new one, they will all transfer over, and are safe there?
    2. I tend to move my laptop around alot so if I am going to turn off time maching should I turn the program itself off, and then eject the disc? It is a plug in version so it isn't really mobile.
    3. If I can do the above, when I plug the external harddrive back in a day or two later, will it just begin backing up from where it left off?
    4. Since I have such a small amount of space that is being backed up to a terabyte harddrive do I need to partition it for any reason or is it alright to just let it back up forever until it fills up then starts deleting old stuff?
    Thanks for your time guys, I truly appreciate it.

    Yes.

    Not strictly necessary, but don't just yank the data cable while a backup is taking place.

    You don't need to partition unless you want to use some of the space for other purposes. Keep the TM repository on a partition by itself.

  • Best Practices- Number of users in Contract Manager

    What is the best practices for the number of users operating in Primavera Contract Manager? We currently have v13.0.3.0

    There are no real limits to the number of users working in PCM, but your server(s) must be sized correctly to work effectively.  I've seen PCM instances with hundreds of users.  Sizing requirements is typically included with your installation materials; otherwise you may want to look at the knowledgebase for this document.

  • Retrying a particular failed Process Task for all the OIM Users

    Hi,
    We are using OIM 11.1.1. On a particular day one of the systems was unavailable hence all the process tasks for that system failed for a number of users. Is there any way of viewing all the failed process task and retrying them together, there are over 3000 users and it is not possible to go through them one by one.
    Any method either through the console or doing it programatically would be very helpful.
    Thanks in advance.
    UZ

    The OTI table has all the rejected task information. You can use it to link to user and resource instances through the OIU table as well.
    You can then take the SCH_KEY and then use code like this to process them:
    public void completeTask(){
    long[] task = new long[] {123123,3242134,23432,43534,34656,456456};
    int counter = 0;
    for (long key:task){
    try {
    counter++;
    provIntf.retryTask(key);
    System.out.println(counter + "|" + task.length);
    } catch (Exception e) {

  • "  QUERY    REGARDING  NUMBER OF USER'S  "

    Hai,
      What is the Upper Limit for the Number of User's in  a SAP system???
    Ex : IF a User is created , how many (N number of user's can use the same SAP system???

    Hai
      Ashok,
           I don't know exact answer for ur question.
    By using rdisp/tm_max_no parameter , we can restrict the no of users per instance.
    The max. no of users allowed here is 10000.
    You can thus restrict how many users can log onto an instance simultaneously.
    You can see which users are logged on in the User Overview (transaction SM04).
    if it useful, reward points.
    Thank you,

  • To make a new site or not? (for branch office with small number of people)

    We have a main office, with our DC (DC01) and a single site (SiteHO), and we are about to open up a new branch office in another city.  This branch office is connected to the head office via a 5 Mbps MPLS network.  The branch office will have around
    5-7 domain joined workstations, and the people there will require access to the existing file and exchange servers in the head office.
    I was thinking about not adding a RODC in the branch office and not creating another site in AD for the branch office either.  My thinking is that since the number of users is relatively low, it doesn't warrant having a new RODC and site.  The
    traffic generated by the 5-7 user logon activities will be minimal, and the local profiles are stored on the workstations (no roaming profiles), so there shouldn't be much WAN link impact.  Obviously I would have to add the subnet from the branch office
    to the SiteHO site.
    Can anybody think of something wrong with my reasoning?

    I think the dedicated line has a little to do with AD since its used both to authenticate the users and move the data.
    I am not sure what bandwith you get from an internet provider in your location, but for example you might get a 100Mb internet connection from an ISP. A VPN tunnel over a 100Mb internet connection I am guessing is faster then a 5Mb guaranteed MPLS link.
    The advantage of MPLS is that you can have QoS policies for voice and video traffic.
    If users move 'very large files' perhaps a local file server might be an good option. DFS replication can save a lot of bandwidth in that case. And then you would have 'local resources' in the branch and in case of wan failure the users will not be able
    to access the local file server resource. So you would need a secondary DC in that location.
    And if they are moving the files think (and check) the impact on the MPLS, because authentication requests go through that link, Exchange traffic (RPC MAPI) goes through that link so these might be affected. For example, lets say you have 2GB mailboxes.
    All Outlook users use OST files. One user's profile gets corrupted and needs to be rebuilt. The Outlook client sets up a fresh OST copy of the mailbox so now its downloading a 2GB mailbox copy over a 5Mb MPLS while some other user is moving a 'large file'.
    By local resources I am referring to file servers, printers, applications in the branch location that require AD authentication. Authentication works with both VPN and MPLS and in case the wan/vpn is down users can even log in with
    cached credentials.
    Hope it helps.

  • CreateFile() taking a long time for small files on disk (sometimes)

    Ever since upgrading a server of mine from Server 2008 R2 to Server 2012, I've been having trouble with shared files not serving quickly at times.  I've traced the problem all the way back to the local machine.  CreateFile() can take up to a minute
    to return for small (few KB) files on disk, but it doesn't happen all the time.  It happens more when the file is being requested by a lot of clients via network shares.
    Here is an example.  The top shows an example of a long request while the bottom shows a normal request.
    I'm curious if anyone might know the cause for this sort of issue.  I would think read cache alone would prevent this sort of thing from happening, and even if it had to come from disk each time I don't understand how it could take so long.  The
    disks are basically unloaded during these times.
    This problem only seems to occur for files being served over the network.  If I start randomly loading a copy of these files with even 128 different threads, I don't get any sort of weird contention issues if the file is local and not shared.  Maximum
    service times peak at 0.009s.  SMB must be blocking the files somehow?  As soon as the file is shared across the network, I start having the weird blocking issue even for local file requests on the server when the requests are to the local path of
    those shared files.

    No change in behavior with Server 2012 R2 and years of patches since I first posted.
    I recently finished building and configuring a new storage server based on Server 2012 R2 Standard.  Initially I thought that whatever was wrong must have been fixed in 2012 R2 since performance was good all week.
    Over the weekend I moved the one remaining share from the old 2012 server to the new 2012 R2 server.  The old server is the one that had had SMB2/3 disabled.  The new server I had just left configured as default with SMB2/3 enabled and hadn't had
    any trouble.  This is the share I originally posted about in 2013 which has around 1.2 million small text files.
    Starting this morning as employees started coming in and working, problems were immediately noticed.  Slow performance was back and with a vengeance.  I've disabled SMB2/3 on the 2012 R2 server now.  It's disappointing that an issue like this
    can go unnoticed and unpatched by Microsoft for so long.  I don't have an unusual usage scenario.  I have a mix of Windows 2000, XP, 7, and 8.1 clients that access the file server.  Only XP, 7, and 8.1 clients access the problematic share.
    I noticed this time around that the event log is flooded with SMBServer 1006 events saying that authentication failed for users accessing shares.  I guess the clients auto-retry in a transparent fashion since clients typically don't have an issue other
    than random-length delays--outright failures are rare.  The shares gives the specified users full access as do the disk permissions for the share's folder.  There isn't any logical reason for an authentication failure other than some systemic flaw.
    Unfortunately, I don't have any answers.  I wanted to keep this thread up to date however for other users in the future to reference.

  • VM exhibiting 100% disk busy time, large disk queue lengths

    Hi everyone,
    We have a .VHD workload residing on a logical 2 x 136Gb RAID1 mirror pair of disks.
    The .VHD file is 130Gb (with 70Gb of free space)
    The Virtual Machine is running Windows 2008 R2 SP1, 4 cores and 8Gb of RAM and is exhibiting 100% disk busy time and disk queue lengths of anywhere between 14 and 44
    I'm assuming this is because there is virtually no disk space on the logical drive. Ops Mgr 2012 R2 reports high memory pages/sec
    So we backed up the .VHD workload, broke the RAID1 Mirror and inserted 2 x 300Gb  as a RAID1 mirror and restore the .VHD / VM
    The Logical disk has 50% free disk space, however the VM is still exhibiting 100% disk busy time and the above disk queue lengths.
    It is running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 HP Proliant Server running the Hyper-V role under Server Core
    Any ideas most appreciated.

    Hi,
    The mirror array doesn’t improve the disk performance but only for the disk redundancy, base on my experience some application frequent operate the large small files often
    can use the large disk resource, if you can’t sure the high disk IO cause by the guest vm or host computer, you can use the Resource Monitor first to identify which process handled the high disk resource, then do the further troubleshooting:
    The third party Resource Monitor use example:

    It will say "green" and use less power, park its head probably, and while early units had some trouble they have evolved. Variable rpm or slower rpm also. They can be much less expenisve way to add storage.
    WD Caviar Green
    WD Green 2TB
    For the system, 640GB is a nice size. Look for 64MB cache to help insure your drive is the latest models which will also say "6G SATA 3" which is fine.
    WD Caviar Black 1TB 6Gb
    WD Black Caviar 2TB
    larger means higher density platter, I find the 1TB and larger Blacks to run hotter/warmer and companys want drives to be able to run warmer or with less cooling. - but for really cold drives other than SSD I have found all my WD 10K VRs to have the absolute coldest temps.
    Just noticed Amazon having better prices than Newegg on 1TB - and WD and Hitachi.
    Green for your external backup, for media libraries that are not high volume access, to run cool and less power. Enterprise for system and performance.  TimeMachine sometimes makes a poor backup method with some green cases.
