Large Downloads

I am starting to think I have a faulty MacBook. Whenever I try to download something around 1 gig or higher the download gets stuck. I've tried downloading the free version of Xcode, gets stuck at 141 mb. Bought the paid version from the app store in hope it works, stuck at 259 mb. It isn't a problem with my internet, as large files on my other computer download fine. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

Sorry, but I've been in Canada for three years now and know how these crown corporations work. They probably subcontracted that out to Bell or somebody who is doing the throttling. You can't call to confirm my theory because anyone you talk to will either deny it or won't understand the question. It is like the LCBO here in Ontario. It is actually run by Molson and you can buy any beer you want there...as long as you want Molson.
The Xcode downloads don't look like typical downloads. They are generated dynamically or something. I have seen a number of people report this. You will have to find someone else with a higher-grade internet service or contact Apple and see if they can ship you a DVD.

  • PC FREE - what about large downloads?

I want to give an ipad to someone, to use " PC FREE ".
Will they be able to download large content directly over the iPad's 3G connection?  I currently can't download a TV show from iTunes to my iPhone over 3G, for example.
They don't have broadband, only dialup.
I guess they could get a MiFi modem over 3G so that the iPad could "be connected with WiFi", but would seem crazy since the iPad has 3G built in.

I didn't think about it until Dahveed brought it up, but basically, if you're worried about "large downloads", then not having broadband will be quite expensive.  AT&T & Verizon have data caps.  And a 10GB plan from Verizon will cost $80/mo.  Even the Mi-Fi from Verizon has a data cap, so a lot of "large downloads" will get you into trouble.  It's not the Wi-Fi on the iPad you need to worry about.  It's the fact that you're still connecting over cellular 3G.
The one current plan I could think of recommending is a Mi-Fi from Sprint.  Sprint's WiMax 4G is unlimited so a 4G Mi-Fi from Sprint, while still costing $60/mo, would avoid overage charges.  The catch is you must be in a 4G area, because you're capped to 5GB of Sprint data in 3G areas.  And that is just what Sprint is offering for now.  They just got the iPhone so who knows if their network can take the strain, thus perhaps Sprint's unlimited data may go away.  I'm told that Verizon's LTE 4G will be unlimited...for now.  If that is so, then a Verizon LTE Mi-Fi (if and when it's availalble) would do...for now.
Realistically, advise the person you're giving the iPad to that they must watch what they do on the iPad.  No streaming.  (No Netflix, no Pandora, etc.)  General web surfing is fine and occasional Youtube is okay.  But no full length movies (unless they're using Sprint on WiMax.)

  • Firefox can't handle large downloads.

Whenever I try to download a large file, the download stops partway through. There's no particular pattern to when it stops; sometimes it'll freeze up within the first minute or two, sometimes it'll get almost to the end before dying. In any case, the download speed for that download drops to zero, and won't pick back up under any circumstances, even though I still have full internet connectivity for general browsing and can even download smaller files no problem. It might have more to do with the filehosting services that provide these large downloads, but it happens for any large file, no matter where I'm download from. I've had it happen on Megaupload, Fileserve, Hotfile, Uploaded.to, Zomg Uploads, and a number of private file servers. If the server in question plays nice with Flashget I can use that, but I can't use Firefox's built-in download capabilities for anything larger than a few dozen MB.

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.<br />
You can try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

  • Hi people, have on the phone till Apple, the reason i cant download OS X Lion is because BT are having issues with the large download & are working on a fix. Was told to phone back in 24 hours if problem continues

Hi people, have on the phone till Apple, the reason i cant download OS X Lion is because BT are having issues with the large download & are working on a fix. Was told to phone back in 24 hours if problem continues

Hi, just got off the phone from BT Business. It is the Business 2wire hub that has the issue. The girl from technical talked through a direct modem to Mac connection and my download took 20 minutes. If you are on Fibre broadband this is the only current fix or a new router if non fibre customer. Hope that helps.

  • Broken connection in the middle of large download

I recently purchased a HP laptop, Windows 7. I added it my wireless system BEFWS4 V4. It works just fine with downloading most things. But the connection is interrupted in the middle of large downloads such as a movie.  HP checked things out remotely and claims that the router must be the problem. Is that reasonable, and if another router is required. Can you suggest something that will be relatively easy to install. By the way my home computer is running XP.
    Thanks,
    Sid

  • 2 approved updates gives large download size

    Hi All,
I've been using WSUS for some time and I have one thing that happens that I would love to understand why.
When I approval windows security definitions why do I end up with a large download.
Today I approved windows defender definition and windows security definition and the download was 2 files at 750mb.  We have approx 30 PC's in WSUS but I would have thought the download would have been no more than 50mb.
Am I missing something?  I tried searching but I just couldn't find anything.  Sorry if this has been asked and answered many times.
    Regards,
    Chris

Yes. It will have all VM related files in it. I would say it's less. Its an Appliance and it will need minimum of 2GB worth of files to work.
If it were built on windows you would be downloading an OVA of at least 8GB

  • ITunes locks PC during large downloads

This started happening about a month ago and there have been no major changes to my system (I've had this system for over a year).
PC running Windows Home 7 Premium 64 bit with SP1 and all available Microsoft updates installed.  iTunes is version 10.6.1
The sytem locks during downloads - usually they need to be large such a video podcasts and now a movie.  Downloads start and proceed at high speed to a point and then progress on the download stops and the indication of remaining time starts to go up.  For example, I was trying to download a 383MB video podcast and it flew along up to 62.1MB and showed 2 minutes remaining to complete in the status.  Then it went to 3, 4, etc.  After 2 minutes elapsed time, it was 7 minutes and after 20 minutes it was 2 hours. However, the indication of estimated completion time is the only thing on the system that is active.  The clock in the system tray stops almost immediately after the download progress stops nothing else is accessible - even Ctrl Alt Del and Ctrl Shift Esc do nothing,  The only thing I can do is physically power off and them it takes over 20 minutes to get back into iTunes as I have a large library (over 24000 songs and about 30 movies).
This has happen consistently in several locations with high-speed internet and I've tried turning off wifi and going hard wire.  Yesterday, I got a movie and the download to Flixster went fine and the iTunes download locked up.  I have removed and reinstalled iTunes and deleted the content in the download directory.  Also have unsubscribed and resubscribed to podcasts. Ideas on next steps would be appreciated.

Additional info - after 6 iterations of donwload/lock/reboot, I did successfully get the movie I bought (2.25GB of content) and it does play.

  • WWhy are large downloads being throttled in Firefox but not IE or Chrome?

When downloading a large file in Firefox 3.6.12, download speed always starts high (300-400 KB) but quickly drops to 40-60 KB and stays at the slow speed. Happens on different web sites. When downloading multiple files. every file starts at the high speed and drops to the low speed in the same way. Downloading the same files with IE or Chrome the speed starts high and never drops. Starting Firefox in safe mode doesn't help.

I've now been forced to tell my users NOT to use FF because of it's BUG.

  • Vsftpd and large downloads - cache problem

Today I have raised vsftpd to transfer a lot of files (~30 GB) to my friend's machine. At start all was ok - full download speed was 2 MB/s, and iotop showed these MB's read from FS. When about 4 GB where downloaded  from me, strange things happened. Despite config file (max_clients and max_per_ip were 10, friend was using 10 simulateonous connections in filezilla), many following messages appeared in log (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - friend's address):
Tue Aug 24 16:30:05 2010 [pid 2] CONNECT: Client "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx", "Connection refused: too many sessions."
Also the speed felt dramatically - at start there was ~220 KB/s per connection, now lower than 10 KB/s. iotop shows only eventual 124 KB reads from vsftpd. Cache filled all my memory (600 MB data - it's running KDE4 plus some documents and Opera opened):
    $ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 3862 3806 55 0 441 2766
    -/+ buffers/cache: 599 3263
    Swap: 2047 0 2047
Also responsiveness of system changed strangely - operations with disk are as fast as usual, but with RAM became much slower. E.g., I use pacman-cage, and now pacman -Syu works many times slower. I know that reboot would take away this problem, but it's only partial solution.
Is it the intended caching behavior? (IMO, it's rather not)
How can be I/O optimized to not to overload cache?

since your on a fast network, lower your timeout values, they are much too high, also, increase your connections to 15, but tell your friend to only download using 10 or lower connections.
are the files downloaded small (many files) or large ones. check /var/log/everything.log for related error messages, e.g, I/O, file descriptors.

  • Loseing internet connection on large downloads

    Greetings All,
I've been trying to do software updates and keep getting this error while downloading large files:
"A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again."
As long as the file is around 1meg or less no problem. I'm useing a ActionTec wireless router which I had no problems with my other computer.
This is my first Mac, bought in June of this 07.

Sounds similar to my problem. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3179926
Check kernel.log if you get the same output there (Start the "Console" application from Applications/Utilities, click "show log list" at the top left of the application and select kernel.log)

  • MBP losing large downloads no matter what connection.

    Greetings,
I have two MBP's, one for my wife and myself. mine, when i try to download a file larger than probably 200-300mb it stops and i get an error:
"/Users/ryanmckibben/Desktop/BengalsVideo1.mpg.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.
Try again later, or contact the server administrator."
now i have tried from several different sites, including my own server and get the same thing. my wifes MBP same OS(latest snow leopard), same browser version, everything, works fine, my 4 yr olds dell laptop, works fine. so its not the internet connection, its not the servers, its something specific with my computer specifically.
this happens on any browser, safari, firefox latest beta, and chrome for mac.
    so its not the browser
    its not the internet connection
its not the source file server.
any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    i have tried the following:
reboot, cleared, cache/browser files, checked for any updates, disabling IPv6 off and on and auto setting, repaired disk permissions, downloaded onyX and no issues found with that...
im lost at this point... doesnt make much sense...
i have used 5 different wireless and hardwired networks over all, same exact result with each...
it worked 2-3 times over the last 6 weeks total... and it was on smaller files.. like 400mb.. but every single other time it errors out... and if i try those same files again, it errors out too..
    im lost here...

Directory issues can be manifested in all sorts of ways, FNNSports. Big files often have large extents files to keep track of the location of all the "fragments' on the drive. These can become problematic at times when small files don't demonstrate problems. It is actually a good idea to run Disk Utility to "Repair Disk" in this fashion every month or two anyway as part of basic maintenance. It can stop a host of problems developing over time. You should also do it after ANY system or application crash.
One of the reasons I suggested also looking at the "SMART Status' of the drive (and ideally using SMART Utility" to check it too), though, was that I found myself wondering whether your HD is suffering from physical problems causing difficulties with prolonged data writing events causing some heat build up or some such.
Checking the directories and the drive's physical status is an important first step whenever you run into problems with file writing or reading activity of the kind you mention.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Why do I get a kernel panic during large downloads?

Since I got my new MacBook Pro, it's been doing kernel panics during large file downloads.
Getting rid of Chrome seemed to help but today the panics are back.  I just started up in Safe Boot mode and the downloads (two files, approx. 500 and 300 MB, respectively) completed downloading without incident.
While I'm checking out my startup items, has anyone else seen this problem?  I didn't have this problem with my Core 2 Duo.

I took a look at the dump and saw a reference to an Elmedia Player kext.  I remembered that in another thread someone mentioned this giving some trouble, I uninstalled it.  I'll keep an eye on it to see if the problem comes back.

  • Freezing of download bar on large downloads

when downloading zip files on my I mac, OSX 10.6.8  Safari 5.1.5 (6534.55.3) my downloads on large files freezes and keeps adding download time but not advancing the download bar.  I have left it on for days and there is no movement in the download bar.  Stays at ...for ex. 7.3 MB.   Smaller files download ok

    Hi BDAqua,
Tried what you suggested and found no excessive CPU and 0 Pageouts.  Went into the Open Console and found this recurring message from the time that I was trying my downloads.
    5/25/12 4:09:58 PM
    Installer[392]
PackageKit: *** Missing bundle identifier: /Library/Receipts/Flip4Mac QuickTime Components.pkg
However, my problem is resolved.  I inadvertenly clicked twice and activated 2 downloads.  One froze.  Theother plodded on and completed the download

  • Large downloaded raw files

I am using windows 8.1 and cs6 both recently installed. I have a problem with my PC in that downloaded RAW files are much too large at something like 45mb when they should be about 15mb.
What is happening and how do I cure this problem? camera is a nikon d700.

Have you changed your camera settings?  I'm not sure about the D700, but with the D3, you can record RAW files in 12 or 14 bit, so if you're camera is set for the higher bit depth, your files will be larger.

  • IPad (3rd gen) losing wifi connection during large downloads

    Hi,
I am having a problem with my iPad 3rd generation (wifi only, 64GB) running iOS 6.1.3.
When I download large files (e.g. via the iTunes app, the BBC iPlayer app, The Economist app), my iPad almost always loses wifi connection a minute or two into the download, and often stays disconnected until I go into Settings > Wifi and select my home network again. If I resume the download in relevant application, the same issue will typically recur within a minute or two.
I am not having any other problems with this iPad - general internet browsing / streaming of video has been fine. I originally thought the issue was only with the BBC iPlayer app, but sadly have found it to be more widespread.
I have tried to "forget this network", resetting network settings, restoring my entire iPad (twice), and resetting all settings - none of these have stopped the issue. Interestingly, during the first restore of the iPad I received ugly BIOS-esque messages relating to AppleBCMWLANCore, which disappeared after a hard reboot (power + home buttons together), and did not recur on the 2nd restore.
Anyone else experiencing something similar? Any suggestions to fix this?
    Cheers,
    James

Locate the iPad as close as possible  to your router.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button
