Large ext4 vs. LVM and several ext3

I am getting a new laptop with a 500GB hard-drive and am deciding how to partition it. It will only have Arch on it so there is no need for many partitions. Here is my current plan:
"The usual"
100MB /boot (ext2)
10GB / (ext3)
8GB swap
With the rest, I could go for a single ext4 or LVM with several ext3. A single ext3 would take forever for fsck so is not really an option. I'm thinking the single ext4 would just be easier and I am a lazy person...
Any opinions on those two options? (and only those two. I do not want to know about other FS types).

Yes, a single ext4 would be /home. I guess the decision points are:
1) is ext4 stable enough (probably yes...)
2) would I even need other partitions (probably no - I use qemu to test other distros etc).
So I suppose ext4 is the best idea. I was just checking other opinions...

Ext4 sqlite bug on a ext3?

Hey,
here's my problem.
2 days ago i've installed rkwart to give it a try, till then i had a gnome only setup ( completly without kdelibs and deps ).
I've used the strigil / nepomuk setup to disable it.
a bit later i removed it all again since i dont need the stuff at the moment.
afterwards i encountered a problem with some apps that where running with out anny problems.
1. gnome-system-monitor
runs without anny problem, exept when i close it.
i've tracked it so far down to the dconf daemon, when i close the monitor, the deamon makes a exessive write to the harddisk.
based on iotop its only ~0.5MB/s, but its delaying the close process from dunno 1 sec to about 5 sec's...
2. liferea
slower app loading, slower catching of the feeds
3. and most disgusting desura
when i load the app it takes it up to 2mins to finish the load of the games list
also it's writing with (iotop) about ~1MB/s to the disk, while loading ?!?
the strange thing is that the sound of the writing is that its sounds like...
well if someone tries to play the plates of the harddisk on a grammophone... with the rpm of the harddisk
home partition is a ext3 one, after i had "downgraded" it from a ext4 one caus of the sqlite bug.
well after using the kdestuff for about 2hours i got the same behavior of the ext4-sqlite bug on a ext3 one...
my actual temorary fix is that i have moved the liferea and desura.settings folder to my ext2 boot partition and linked them back to the
original position...
have searched for about a day without any success...
hope there is some one who had a simmilar problem and who got fixed it...

You can use rsync for this if you want.
Example:
rsync -avxu --progress /home /media/backup/home

Any help that you can provide in helping my iPhone accurately sync with iPhoto and iTunes will be greatly appreciated.
Symptoms:
1)   Sync: It’s not completing the sync. Below, I’ve provided all of my settings from the iTunes Summary tab so that you might tell me if I’ve selected any incorrect options. I prefer to sync the “old school” way – by connecting to the computer – as opposed to syncing over the cloud. Perhaps this is what’s causing the problem? Here is a list of the steps displayed in the iTunes window as the sync progresses:
waiting for sync to start (step 1 of 7)
backing up (step 2 of 7)
preparing to sync (step 3 of 7)
determining apps to sync (step 4 of 7)
preparing apps to sync (step 5 of 7)
importing photos (step 6 of 7)
waiting for changes to be applied (step 7 of 7)

2)   Photos: I've selected only certain of my iPhoto albums to sync to my iPhone. All of the albums are correct/complete in iPhoto. All of the albums are listed on my iPhone, both before and after the sync, but the albums are empty (no actual photos) before and after the sync. Perhaps this is tied to the fact that the sync isn’t completing, but because “importing photos” is one of the steps that the incomplete sync displays, I don’t know.
3)   Apps: When I launch iTunes and click on the Apps folder under the Library listing, then click on the Updates tab, iTunes searches for any Apps needing to be updated and provides a list. If I click on Update All, the Apps are successfully updated in iTunes. But, when I plug in my iPhone so that the updates will transfer to the apps on my iPhone, the updates don’t transfer to the apps on my iPhone and those apps still reflect that they need updating on the iPhone.
Other Potential Pertinent Info:
The flash memory hard drive on my MacBook Air recently died (perhaps a month or two ago). Apple had emailed me about a known issue and literally the next day, my MacBook Air crashed. I installed a new flash memory drive and re-installed everything from a backup off of an external hard drive. Everything seems to be working fine; it recreated accurately all of my software and data, including iPhoto and iTunes, the pictures and songs (respectively) for which are stored on that hard drive, as opposed to being on the flash memory in the MacBook Air itself. However, I don’t recall if the start of the sync problem described herein started happening at the same time that I replaced the flash memory drive. All I know is that the computer is working perfectly in all respects and that even as the sync is failing, it at least says that it’s doing the right things and looking in the right places (e.g., the list of albums on my iPhone matches the list of albums in iTunes, etc.).

Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

Sounds like a good plan, you can never be to safe and having a second External HD is safer than one.
The only thing that I would do different, is setup the 3T as my TimeMachine Backup and then erase and move my Photos, Videos and perhaps even iTunes Media to the 1T. That way you will have room to backup both the Internal Hard Drive and the 1T External Hard Drive to the 3T using TimeMachine.
Take your time, study and use the > Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions if you get stuck or aren't sure how to make the move.

Is the only way to import large amount of data and database objects into a primary database is to shutdown the standby, turn off archive log mode, do the import, then rebuild the standby?

Instead of rebuilding the (whole) standby, you take an incremental (from SCN) backup from the Primary and restore it on the Standby. That way, if, for example
a. Only two out of 12 tablespaces are affected by the import, the incremental backup would effectively be only the blocks changed in those two tablespaces (and some other changes in system and undo) {provided that there are no other changes in the other ten tablespaces}
b. if the size of the import is only 15% of the database, the incremental backup to restore to the standby is small

How can i see how large an app is and how much data is stored

In ios7 I could select an app and see it's size and how much data is stored in using it on my iPhone.
I can't seem to locate that option in ios8.1
to refresh and app I had the option of deleting it and reinstalling before based on the information held by the app.
is this clear?
MyFitnessPal is taking a long time to load, thought I would see how large the app is and how much info is stored
but as I've redundantly stated here I can't find that option in my phone now.

For me it take a few seconds to load, you may find that the app is being slow to open if it is still downloading some data for it's own caches etc. Try to ensure it has a good internet connection. Obviously it could just be that the service in question is also having issues, so consult their support too.

Some people have seen their aluminum uni-body discoloring due to body oils. Go figure.
Normally putting anything over the keys/aluminum will hurt heat disspation, but you may need to use keyboard covers.
Or save up $500/year for new keyboards.
Neither is supposed to be a sarcastic answer. Either one could end up being the solution.

Large file on fcpx and trying to export without compressor? want to eventually transfer to dvd?

I have a fairly large file on fcpx and trying to export it without compressor. I tried this and the .mov file was way too large to eventually burn to a dvd. Can someone please help!! I am very new to this program. Do I need compressor? Or when I share>export media is there a setting i can change?

Are you making an authored DVD or a DVD-ROM? If the former, the size of the file doesn't matter only the length of the video.

plug cable into computer not phone
turn phone off
hold home button and plug cable into phone. do not release home button until an itunes graphic appears on device.
look to computer should have message about recovery mode click ok and restore

Lvm and gparted

a few months ago i installed arch linux on my computer. i use reiserfs as a filesystem and i have lvm on it (or is this backwards, i don't know ). i really don't know why i used lvm at installation, but at that time it seemed to me as a great tool to manage different "partitions" (logical volumes) on one partition. now i am thinking to cut a little space from my windows partition and give it to linux. So i have a few (well lots of ) questions.
My specs first:

And questions:
1. can i resize partitions using gparted without damaging data on them? does this include partitions with lvm on them?
2. can i resize logical volumes on lvm without damaging data on them too? is snapshot used at doing this and how?

4. does changing logical volumes require a restart?
5. why does gparted show that on /dev/sda7 there is only 34 MB of used space?
6. is it ok to have two partitions marked as boot?

With OES11 it's possible and quite easy to use the left free space on the system disk for NSS.
It also does not have the potential for havoc as was the case with OES2 (as with OES2 this was also possible, it just meant using EVMS on the system disk device, which could lead to issues booting after patching of updating due to needed missing kernel modules for EVMS within initrd).
Still, even with it being possible and supported to do so, if you can house the OS bits and data (be it on NSS and other filesystems) on different disk devices.. that would always be what I'd opt for. It makes certain maintenance/recovery and update tasks easier/more flexible/reliable as OS and data partitions are not within one and the same "container".

Take it in to an Apple store or authorized service center for evaluation and possible replacement.

In the past I have always created an array-level logical drive for my NSS partiton/volume. Rather than doing this, I would rather just have one logical drive and partition the space using LVM (except for /boot and swap). Once I create the LVM and add /, /home, /var, /tmp to it, I will have a lot of extra space which I want to use for the NSS volume.
So, is it possible to use the unused space in LVM for NSS? Or should I stick which a separate logical partition for NSS?

I downloaded Yosemite last night but when I tried to update iPhoto, I got an error message stating that that app and several others couldn't be updated because they weren't paid for by the user id entered. I'm the only one who uses this computer.

I downloaded Yosemite last night and tried to look at my photos in iPhoto and noticed that needed updating. When I tried to update as requested, I got an error message stating that the app (and several others including Pages and Numbers) couldn't be updated because they weren't purchased by the user ID I had entered. I'm the only user of the computer and now I can't find my photos anywhere! Any help would be appreciated.

Some folks have solved this issue by dragging the apps to an external disk, then disconnecting it, and then are able to download. Apparently it can arise if you upgraded from an OS the than Mavericks.
Failing that: Contact App Store support. There's a link on the right hand side of the App Store Window. They're the only ones who can sort out account issues.
