Large files created in TEMP folder

Hello,
one of our servers reported low disk space and we discovered, that its caused by huge files created in temp folder.
These file names are like C:\Windows\Temp\TMP00000A78405B314E573DA1A0
Process monitor reported, that theyre created by FEP (msmpeng.exe), from 1MB to 1.7GB size ..
Is it normal behavior?

Did you find a resolution for this? I have a server that is doing the same thing and would like to get it cleaned up.
Thanks!
Jeff

  • 10+ GB files created in private folder, aslmanager using 94% CPU, HELP!

    My computer seemed to be running ok, but huge chunks of disk space kept dissappearing, until when I knew I ought to have at least 11 GB open on the drive, I started getting pop up dialogue boxes warning of no more drive space available for application memory or that sort of thing. Trying to track the problem down I got Onyx and used it to be sure all daily, monthly, and weekly scripts had run. That didn't affect these files, either in size or number. I also ran the cleaning protocols - that didn't help much at all. A couple of times chunks of disk space would magically reappear, up to 2 or 3 GB, but then the space would very very rapidly disappear again.
    Then I got a program called "Grand Perspective" that maps your drive, and found huge private/var/log/asl files that were up to 5 GB, and, yes, I do mean these files are Gigabite, in size, not MB.
    After using console to see the last 16 MB of a couple of these files, and not being able to tell anything from them other than that the dates from a log file dated 2010.10.16.asl was showing entries from Feb & Mar, which seemed very odd... Anyhow, I deleted all but the last day of those log files (one of those I did NOT delete was over 1.5 GB).
    I also found and deleted a private/var/log/daily.out file that was over 5 GB.
    I did not delete the private/var/log/asl files with different names than those with dates. In other words, I did NOT delete (today's size shown for each) 2010.11.15.asl at 553MB, 2010.11.15.U501.asl at 1.72 GB, LongTTL.asl at 1.2 MB, LongTTL.UO.asl at 8 KB, StoreData at 4Kb, SweepStore at 0Kb.
    Before deleting all of the previous private/var/log/asl dated files, the computer was for the most part running fine, but had run out of free disk space when I knew it ought to have had at least 11 GB open (e.g., >10% of the drive) - so it kept hanging up, I'd free up a few hundred MB with Onyx, reboot a few times, etc., and it'd just fill up and hang again in no time....
    After deleting those files, I had over 17 GB free disk space and I rebooted. I believe I then ran onxy both maintenance and cleaning functions.
    Now computer is hanging, and/or firefox is hanging or very slow to respond. Space was rapidly disappearing again. Using Grand Perspective again late this morning, I discovered a new file, private/tmp/periodic.vNHob2vCOj created at 3:15 am, that was already over 7.5 GB. Within an hour it was over 8.5 GB, and now it is over 10.5 GB, and I'm down to 11 GB available disk space. Yesterdays asl log files (the huge ones) are still there, along with two new and reasonably small ones for today.
    So when the computer and/or firefox starts hanging, and the fans really rev up (which is happening very frequently today) I opened the activity monitor. It seems that the fans aren't always rev'ing when its hanging, but often are or begin to shortly after the computer drastically slows down - and I hadn't noticed this before I deleted all those large files.
    From the activity monitor, it seems that the aslmanager is using up to as high as 88% or more of my CPU that I've seen so far. Even when the CPU use is down around 3 or 4%, it may be using as much as over 1.18 GB real memory, and AT THE SAME TIME 1.8 GB (yes, gigabite!) of virtual memory.
    I tried quitting firefox to see if that made any difference, but even then the aslmanager is still using massive amounts of CPU and memory.
    Syslog is also periodically using as high as 94% of CPU that I've seen, although this seems much less common than the aslmanager problem.
    I sampled or used console to copy some of the text in that daily.out file before I deleted it. I also sampled the syslog when it was using 68% of CPU, and the aslmanager when it was using either a lot of CPU or memory or both, I don't recall which for sure. I also used console to display the last 16 MB of that private/tmp/periodic.vNHob2vCOj file and copy it to an rtf file.
    I can of course post parts of any of these if it would help determine what is causing this problem.
    As you can imagine, I'm desperate to know what in the world is going on here and how to fix it!!! I would be incredibly grateful for your help in resolving this problem.

    I may have inadvertently fixed the problem. The one file had grown to over 12.5 GB, so I was going to try the sudo commands listed in this article: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10329979-263.html and then delete that file. The commands didn't seem to work - both aslmanager and syslogd were still showing in the activity monitor and it didn't create a temp file on the desktop. I thought perhaps because the friend who gave me this computer left the admin password blank, so I went to change it to a real password. In the process the computer completely hung, so I rebooted. That 12 GB file is gone, at least so far and I haven't heard the fans (have only been back up for a few minutes tho so we'll see).
    Even so, going to console as you suggested - it looks like tons of aslmanager lines, but I haven't got a clue what it was doing, perhaps you can tell? For future reference... I have no idea how much of this is after it hung completely and I had to hold down the button to force it to shutdown, and then I rebooted...so apologies for copying more here than probably is needed:

  • Reader can't read/open large files created in ArcGIS ??

    Hi there
    We have a problem with files (GEO PDF's) created primarily from ArcGIS (ESRI).
    Reader version XI or DC can't open/read them (blank screen, but all functions working). It can be files around 60 MB or 1.5 GB and above 300 DPI.
    The weird thing is that if we use FOXIT ALL of them will open/show so it can't be the file that is corrupt, but something in Reader.....either a setting, limitation or ??
    Anyone ??????

    Hi,
    We would like to take a look at the large files to investigate the cause of the problem.
    Please note that the Adobe forums do not accept email attachments.
    Would you share the links to the files?
    How to share a document
    If you are not comfortable sharing the links in this public user forum, please send me a private forum message with the links.
    Thank you.

  • Jar_cache files left in temp folder

    With my java applet, I notice that my Temp folder fills up with lots of jar_cachexxx files, where xxx is numeric.
    Running on Windows Vista.
    Most of these files have a size of 0.
    The files never seem to be deleted.
    I've searched the forums, but this does not seem to be a current issue.
    One closed 'not a bug', suggested that the behaviour was correct if I load the applet as an <object > in the html, rather than as an <applet >. I've changed my html, but makes no difference.
    I'm a little concerned that users of my app will be filling up there hard drives with empty useless files.
    Does anyone else get lots of these building up in their Temp folder? Is there a solution to this?

    Did you find a resolution for this? I have a server that is doing the same thing and would like to get it cleaned up.
    Thanks!

  • ITunes music files in my Temp folder

    So I have a full list of my music in c:\temp (cannot figure out how they got there) and the ones in My Documents\My Music\iTunes...
    Where would I see where iTunes actually sees the files so I can delete the set in c:\temp. And if it is using the c:\temp how do I move them all back to the proper folder. Last time I did something like this the iPod on a sync became a total mess!

    +"Where would I see where iTunes actually sees the files"+
    Find the song in the iTunes library, right-click, "Show in Windows Explorer." That will show you the copy that iTunes is using. Any other copy is not needed.

  • Temp files in user temp folder

    I have an issue that recently popped up. Adobe Livecycle 7.0 creates a temporary pdf file under C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local settings\Temp everytime a pdf is previewed by the user. The files keeps building and never get deleted. Interestingly, the problem started happening only about a month ago. So it appears that it was getitng purged by Adobe earlier.
    Does anyone know what could be wrong and if there is anything that needs to be changed to make the automatic purging to continue to happen ?
    Any guidance is very much appreciated.
    Thanks !

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page).
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    Here's a screenshot showing the particular links on the page that you should be clicking:
    After clicking one of the circled links, you should be taken to another page, and after a few seconds you should see a download dialog appear for the msicuu2.exe file. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like for me in Firefox:
    Choose to Save the file. If the dialog box does not appear for you, click the link on the page that says "CLICK HERE IF IT DOES NOT". Here's a screenshot of the page with the relevant link circled:
    When the dialog appears, choose to save the file.
    (2) Go to the Downloads area for your Web browser. Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • How to make a category required for all files created within a folder

    I've defined a category. It has attributes which have been flagged as required.
    When I view the properies of a particular workspace (library), the category is shown as available to the workspace. However, the category is not shown as required. And the "required" checkbox is not clickable.
    So .. how, from the OCS DHTML applet, do I make a particular category a required category for all files in a folder?

    Perhaps the Category Attribute is not marked as "configurable" when it was created. You can check this by "switching into Admin Mode" and drilling down the Categories using "Manage Categories" link. Check if the category attribute is marked as configurable or not.

  • Large file created in archive area.

    I'm having this situation. Their is a file being created in our archives area that starts with DATAFILES as shown below, that is very big and
    can this file be deleted or purged from the archives area? If another file this size is created in the area it will surely occupy all the disk space available. How can I handle this situation and why is this file being created? The first 2 files are other files being created in the same area.

    It looks like a backup, but we can't be sure. You'd have to identify the process / script / job that creates the file and why.
    /sbin/fuser DATAFILES_..._20100208_5el5f395_s15534_p1
    might help identify a process accessing / writing to that file.

  • File tranfer avoiding temp folde

    Is there a way to tranfer files (nomad explorer) from the zen touch to the pc hdd avoiding the temp foler?
    Asking because although my windows partiotion is almost full i have like a lot of gigs of free space elsewhere and cant tranfer the files i want.
    Thnx happy holidayz

    Well I just changed the path to my massi've storage partition. Moving isnt a problem anymore.
    If anyone wants to do it he just has to change the Temp dir of his profile (f.e. C:\Documents and Settings\admin\Local Settings\Temp) to wherever he wants (f.e. E:\Tempmod).
    The path is specified in the System Properties->Environment Variables.

  • Server has not enough memory for operation (Some .rpt files not removing from Temp folder )

    We have web application developed in ASP.NET 4.0 ftramework and published on IIS. And we are using 13_0_8 version of CR.
    I am creating report files and exporting these as pdf. And I am disposing streams and report documents at the end. Initially, there wasn't any problem and temporary files which are created by CrystalReport were deleting all. But, now requests to the web application increeased to about 50.000 in a day and now some .rpt files are staying in Temp folder and I can't delete them. After recycling application pool all files are removed by IIS. Then, after 1 or 2 hours new .rpt files are creating in Temp folder. And after somewhile, application throws Server has not enough memory for operation. And, IMHO the reason is temp files. Here is the code I am using to export report as pdf.
    Questions:
    1. Is the reason of this exception is temp files in Temp folder?
    2. What is wrong in that code?
    ReportDocument report = DownloadPDF.GetReport(id);
       MemoryStream stream = (MemoryStream)report.ExportToStream(CrystalDecisions.Shared.ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat);
       Response.ContentType = "application/pdf";
       Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=" + id+ ".pdf");
      report.Close();
      report.Dispose();
       try
       Response.BinaryWrite(stream.ToArray());
       Response.End();
       catch (Exception)
       finally
      stream.Flush();
      stream.Close();
      stream.Dispose();

  • 7-zip can not create temp folder arcive

    after downloading and running the download the dialog box woz
    7-zip the message woz can not create the temporary folder archive.

    After much messing around and frustration, I finally solved the problem by (1) uninstalling 7-Zip; (2) rebooting the computer; (3) reinstalling 7-Zip; (4) creating a 'temp' folder in the 7-Zip program; and (4) running the installation of Firefox directly from the download page instead of downloading it first onto my computer and running setup from the downloaded file. Worked like a charm.
    FWIW: strangely enough, uninstalling 7-Zip and rebooting the computer did not get rid of the '7-Zip' error message when trying to install Firefox. I know next to nothing about how computers' innards work, but it struck me as bazaar that uninstalling 7-Zip and rebooting the computer didn't at least get rid of the 7-Zip error message.
    Thanks to all for the suggestions

  • Duplicates in temp folder

    I've recently upgraded to PS Elements V7. I've noticed that when I modify the date/time of a picture, it is leaving a duplicate copy of the picture in my temp folder (path is C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\temp). The only difference between this picture file and the original in my "my pictures" folder, is the date of the file/picture.
    There is also an empty "Adobe" and empty "editor" sub-folder in this temp folder.
    I've noticed that this duplicate file appears only when I modify the date/time of a picture, not if I do a full edit of the picture and save it (then it just overwrites the original picture in the "my pictures" folder.
    I've tried closing PS Elements and rebooting the computer, but the files in the temp folder are still there. I deleted all of these pictures and through Elements modified a picture, checked that it had duplicated in temp (it had), closed element, rebooted...still there.
    As I've never noticed this before (I usually clear out the temp folder about 1x a week and have been an elements user for years), I'm wondering what is causing it? If it is normal? Is there a way to disable it?
    As this temp folder is somewhat hidden (most/many computer users probably don't know how to access it), the fact that it is retaining full duplicate copies of modified pictures that must be manually deleted means that many users hard drives may be filling up unnecessarily with these files.
    I've checked in elements and noted that it points to the original picture in the "my pictures" folder and not to the temp folder duplicate. Deleting the temp folder pictures does not seem to affect elements. I've also tried the folder view option in elements to see if it was "recognizing" these duplicates in temp, but the temp folder does not even come up as accessible.
    Thanks for any help, insight...Mike Villella

    John, thanks for the reply. I wonder if anyone else is missing a lot of disk space due to files in a temp folder that don't know about. I would think that closing the program and/or rebooting would flush this folder, but apparently not.
    I use Norton Protected Recycle bin. Never noticed a similar problem before. I just did an "unerase" function with the recycle bin and there were a lot of old files that are associated with elements, just not any actual pix.
    I do keep finished photos on a NAS drive, but the photos in question are on the hard drive (C drive).
    I did the process again paying more attention. Started by deleting everything in the temp folder and rebooting.
    The file had a date taken of 12/5/99 a created date of 1/3/09 and a modified date of 1/24/09 and was in "My pictures". Upon adjusting the time/date to 12/15/99, a new file popped up in the temp folder, same name, size, rez, etc. The temp file has a date taken of 12/5/99, a created date of 1/25/09 and a modified date of 1/24/09, same as the old file except the new created date of today.
    The picture in "my pictures" is also same size, name and rez. The date taken has the new date of 12/15/99, and a modified and created date of 1/25/09 (today).
    So apparently, upon adjusting the time/date, the original file is being duplicated and created in temp, while the original file is being updated with the new date entered and today's date as created and modified.
    The duplicated file in temp is basically orphaned. Elements does not appear to link to it or see it. When I delete it manually, it does not affect Elements.
    So, I guess I can understand why a temp file is created during the process (but, by the same token, not sure why the same thing doesn't happen during a full edit), but I'm not sure why it is left in temp and not automatically deleted at some point. Does that make sense or am I missing something?
    Also, I notice a amt, alm, libFNP_events, and swtag file being created in this temp folder (C:\documents and settings\username\local settings\temp). They don't seem to ever auto delete either.

  • Temporary files created by SBO

    SBO 6.5 SP:01 EF:07 with the SDK UI/DI creates files in the temp folder ...\Local Settings\Temp\SM_OBS_DLL
    The subfolder "650097" contains multiple copies of a dll (2.4 MB), like "OBSdll080904070408.Dll"
    Another subfolder called "GUI" contains LRF files for every supported language (in total 15 mb)
    This all adds up to at least 20 MB, but on my system to several 100 MB additional files on the harddrive.
    The folder contains the file CleanupHist.xml but SBO doesn't seem to remove these files after shutting down the applicaton.
    Does anyone know why SBO creates these files or to prevent it?
    Thanks,
      Gerold

    The OBS.....dll files are copies of OBServerDLL.dll.  Each time you run an add-on that uses the DI, it creates a copy of this DLL and works with this copy.
    There is a known issue about these being left behind. SAP Note 722338 details it.
    John.

  • Cheat for pulishing large files to .Mac!

    OK, so someone may have already posted this, but it's suddenly made my life MUCH easier!
    Having had a week of trouble uploading large podcasts to .Mac from iWeb and via Goliath, I've found a quick cheat.
    - create your Entries with dummy files of 2" blank audio/video - name it something relevant to the podcast entry so you will recognise it later.
    - publish site (should be much quicker and easier).
    - find a relevant podcast folder on your iDisk.
    - upload your larger file to the relevant folder. I found Goliath more stable than Finder.
    - delete small file from the folder.
    - re-name larger file with exact capitalisation etc as smaller file. Goliath was also better for re-naming, Finder had a habit of hanging.
    - bingo. You can listen to/watch the larger files when you visit your site and subscription seems to work too.
    It's working so far. Just be aware that if you amend those Entries in iWeb, the small files will re-appear after you publish, and you have to upload the larger ones again.
    Hope that helps
