Large Files to DVD from FCE

What are your best ideas for putting a two-hour Final Cut Express file onto DVD? What I'm doing is exporting to QuickTime, then using iDVD, but I wonder if there's something better, i.e. quicker.
Thanks for any input.
G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'd suggest the following -
Export from FCE as a Quicktime Movie and be sure to uncheck the option for "Make movie self-contained". This will generate a QT reference movie, which happens fairly quickly compared to creating a self-contained movie.
Import your QT reference movie into iDVD, select your template, etc. and build your DVD project.
In iDVD, burn to a disk image on your HD instead of directly to a DVD disk. Then use Disk Utility to burn your DVD disks. The overall process seems to go faster this way. If you keep the disk image you can burn more DVDs anytime at just the time it takes to burn, without having to wait for iDVD to prepare menus or rendering any video again.
I let iDVD render overnight, so I've never actually timed the entire rendering process however on my 2.0GHz/G5/SP, once I have the disk image it takes about 50 min to burn a 2 hour movie to a 2.4x DL-DVD disk.
To get a 2-hour movie at maximum quality (assuming at least 1 template and a menu or two), I'd suggest using dual-layer DVDs. Technically you can get 2 hours on a single layer DVD but you will sacrifice some quality in the process. (Note - select Best Quality, not Best Performance in your iDVD Preferences).

  • Transfer of large files to and from Egnyte failing...

One of my clients uses Egnyte for file management. For a typical job I will usually be required to download 5GB of files and upload 1.5GB.
However, when at home, transfer of large files to and from Egnyte will often fail. (On download, Chrome gives the error message: "connection failed". Uploading, Egnyte's error message is: "HTTP error").
I have three machines at home. Two Macs (running Yosemite and Lion) and a PC running Windows 7. I've had no luck with any of them on any browser but when using other people's broadband I have no problem at all (using my MacBook).
I have no firewalls running. Yes, I've turned everything on-and-off-again. So that leaves me to think that the problem lies with my BT Homehub 4 router. But why would my router be botching the transfer of large files? I've switched the router's firewall off, tried adding my Mac to DMZ (whatever that is) but that seems to be the most I can do. Ethernet is no different to wireless.
I've not noticed this porblem when using other file transfer sites (like WeTransfer).
    What's going on?
    Please help!

From my own experience (I admin a few gaming servers and often get disconnections from them in the middle of monitoring operations) and based on other users experiences here on the forums I suspect BT have been having some core infrastructure issues which can lead to A) intermittent packet loss B) extended packet delay - both of which can cause servers to assume a 'failure' and disconnect or suspend upload/download.
I dont know what package you are on from BT (I'm Infinity 2) << and as its Hogmany im the one that drawn the short straw to keep cheaters off out servers << so I'm a bit intoxicated and may not make total sense atm.

^^ this thread illustrates issues that people have been having over the last few weeks.
This probably wont help - but it might make you aware that you arent alone in ONGOING issues.

  • Changing compression to burn large file in DVD

How can I burn an overlarge file onto DVD? I have tried changing the compression dettnga and, after 3.5 hours, the complression was completed but know I neither know where the compressed file is nor how to to complete the burn.

What exactly are you referring to? Are you talking about making a video DVD with iDVD? Are you burning Data through the finder or using a program like Toast? Your post is rather vague on the details of what you are trying to do and what you are doing it with. Please post back with the nitty gritties.

  • Trying to burn a dvd from fce

i tried the idvd forum but havent got any responses- since this forum has always been such a help i figured i'd try it- does anyone know how to free up disk space for encoding assets on idvd- apparently its a 'multiplexer' problem- or can someone fill me in on how to use the disk utility to burn a dvd after i have already exported my project from final cut express as a quicktime movie - i have also tried to print to video and it prints sound but the picture doesnt come up in the playback- says the data is incompatable- help!- i cant sleep till i figure this out-
    thanks

    Hi suprjosh
A multiplexer error is usually occurs when burning to a poor quality DVD disk. It can also happen if you are trying to burn the DVD at a too high of a speed. Verbatim is very good. Try burning a disk image from iDVD first. From there use disk utility to burn a DVD. Disk utility will allow you to select a burn speed. Try 4X at most. If you are burning directly from iDVD buy a disk rated to 4X not 8X, 16X etc. It's just too fast and you'll get multiplexer errors.
    Good luck

  • Error copying large files from USB HDD to MyCloud

I am trying to copy a some large files (several GB) from a USB HDD to mycloud drive using the WD My cloud software as described in this post:http://community.wd.com/t5/WD-My-Cloud/Transferring-Large-Amounts-of-Data-to-the-My-Cloud-and-a-Coupl-e/td-p/620219but the copy grinds for some time and then fails. Is there a limit on the file size or amout of data that can be copied in one operation. I am using latest software and firmware. Windows 8.1 if that is relevant. Thanks in advance.

I have also checked the USB disk with chkdsk while plugged into Windows. The files seem to copy if I do it over the network, but its very slow.Ah that was one small detail left out of your initial post that changes things. It is generally NOT recommended to connect a USB drive directly to the My Cloud if copying a large amount of files (or files in excess of 30 or more GB's). Slow transfer speed over the USB port on the back of the WD My Cloud units are a known issue. Search this site and you'll find lots of threads on it. The previous posts indicate better ways to copy the data from a external USB drive to the WD My Cloud.

  • Compression settings for making DVD in FCE

I'm sure this question must have been answered many times - but I can't seem to find anything...
I want to make DVD from FCE - I ususally make a Quick time file from QT conversion - but what settings are teh correct ones for DVD?
The project is in a mix of clips in 1920x1080 and 720x575 and the QT file I made with these settings: H264 - size: 1920x1080 looks good when played on teh computer, but when burned to a DVD with iDVD, it jumps in the DVD player .
When I make a QT file (not QT conversion), it sqeezes the dimensions down to 4:3
    Any suggestions?

    towanda62 wrote:

for usage with iDVD, no 'Conversion' needed, the dvd-authoring app will convert anyhow. 'Export QT movie' should do it. too much 'intermediates' doesn't add any value in DVD-making.
'jumping' usually indicates a) too high burn speed, b) 'dirty' player- or burner-head, c) 'wrong' brand of dvd-r (Verbatim has an excellent track-record here), don't use no-names.

  • TC and WD500 External drive - Locks up when copying large files

I have a TC with a Western Digital 500GB my Book connected to the USB port on the TC that I use for network Storage. Everything works fine until I try to copy large files or directories from the Finder mounted share. After the copy freezes the external drive can no longer be seen by airport utility. If I look at disks it sees the disk but no partition. I have to power cycle the external drive to have TC see the drive again. Then I disconnect the drive and plug it in directly to the MAC and run disk utility and his repairs the journal. I have to do the repair every time it locks up. Should the external drive be formatted different or does it have to be connected to a USB hub. Or is this just a bug with the TC and afp ?

I have this very same problem.
I tried to copy a 4GB+ folder from the Macbook to the 500GB MyBook attached to my TC and it froze.
Now the the files on the MyBook are invisible when attached to the TC ("0 Items") but are available when the drive is connected directly to the Macbook. I have run disk utility but it hasn't helped. The disk is FAT 32 formatted and the files on the MyBook are still invisible over the network.
When the drive attached to the Macbook directly I can see a 'phantom' file with the same title as the 4GB+ folder I'd tried to copy. This file is "ZERO KB" and it cannot be deleted (error code -43).
Anyone have a clue what is happening here?

  • How do I burn a .mov file to DVD?

I need to burn an MPEG-2 video file saved as .mov to a DVD that will play in a regular DVD player.
I have tried opening iDVD and the selecting 'Create a New Project'. When I have selected a location for the project and the main window opens, I go to File > OneStep DVD from Movie...
My understanding is that when I import a movie file, it will burn it straight to the disc without any further options. It does this, however after a couple of minutes the DVD is ejected blank and iDVD says the burn has completed.
How can I solve this problem or is there another way to burn a .mov file to DVD?
    Thanks, Dan

A green screen in an indication that the movie is in a format not supported by iDVD.   It should be in one of these formats:  DV, high-definition video (HDV), MPEG-2 SD, MPEG-2 SD, MPEG-4 SD, MPEG-4 HD, and AVCHD.  (From SDMacUser's post in What input file formats does iDVD...: Apple Support Communities). The post has other requirements that need to be met.
    SD = standard definition.
Open your movie with QT Player and bring up the Info window for the movie.  It will have the format:
Another possible reason is the Energy Saving settings on the Mac.  Turn off energy saving and screen saver before starting the save as disk image or burn.

  • Burning a DVD from Final Cut Express HD

I previously asked for help using iDVD and was directed to a site but I can't get it to open on my computer; it just loads forever. (The site is www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/) Isn't there any way to burn a DVD straight from FCE HD? If not, can someone suggest a different tutorial site I can try?
    Many thanks

Excuse me for jumping in...but as a newbie to FCE, am I to assume that one cannot render directly to DVD from FCE?
So then what is used, and where are chapters created and such?
I used to use Pinnalce Studio and everything was done from inside the program.

  • Burn DVD from video

Somewhat a rookie so go easy on me. I produce a 30 minute TV show in Final Cut Express. I print to video for my media that I give the TV station. I'm often asked to present one of my episodes to a club, etc. A DVD is most convenient for this. I've never had luck printing a good DVD from FCE...I'm sure it's my technique. So, I got the smart idea of using my edited and finished video that I would send to the TV station and use iDVD OneStep (iLife 09) to produce a DVD. Everything seemed to go fine until I put my new DVD in a DVD player...no sound. The image quality is very good and very happy with that...but no sound. What have I done wrong or is iDVD simply not made for this purpose?

    Hi
There is a lot to this. Some basic.
DVD - is a standard in it self - CAN only do SD-Video (as old CRT-TVs at it's best)
Neither iDVD, Roxio Toast™ or DVD-Studio Pro - can do anything better.
(Roxio Toast 10 (11) Pro incl BD-component - Can burn to Blu-Ray and even small movies
as this on Standard DVDs - BUT they NEED a Blu-Ray Player to be viewed)
    *DVD quality*
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (vers 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1)
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality *(movies + menus up to 120 min.)* - BEST
    • Best Performances *(movies + menus less than 60 min.)* - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) *(movies + menus up to 120 min.)* - slightly lower quality than above
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2.Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov *(not selfcontaining, no conversion)*
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x4 (x1) (in iDVD’08 or 09 this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a shortlived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-layer.
*Blu-Ray / BD* can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to plyback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be playbacked IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera recorde in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are plabacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choise before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround eg EnergySaver
    • Don’t let HD spinn down or be turned off (in EnergySave)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screensaver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show

  • Printing large files in LR

When printing very large files (800+ megs) from lightroom to my HP z3200ps 44" printer (on mac), nearly half of the print is this gray noise pattern. It seems to only be with large prints, smaller prints of the same file have no issues. Also large prints through the mac preview program work fine as well, but I'd like to print via LR. Ideas or solutions?

The term video usually means non-stills, so I was confused.
Do you mean the Photos app (where the camera roll is) is crashing?
Most files I've shot with the 3GS camera are 1.1-1.2 megabytes so files size is not unusual.
4441x984 is larger than the typical file found in Camera Roll, so maybe the dimensions are an issue.
Or maybe there is an issue with files imported to Camera Roll from a non-iPhone source. Where are these odd-sized files from?

  • Processing large files on Mac OS X Lion

    Hi All,
I need to process large files (few GB) from a measurement. The data files contain lists of measured events. I process them event by event and the result is relatively small and does not occupy much memory. The problem I am facing is that Lion "thinks" that I want to use the large data files later again and puts them into cache (inactive memory). The inactive memory is growing during the reading of the datafiles up to a point where the whole memory is full (8GB on MacBook Pro mid 2010) and it starts swapping a lot. That of course slows down the computer considerably including the process that reads the data.
If I run "purge" command in Terminal, the inactive memory is cleared and it starts to be more responsive again. The question is: is there any way how to prevent Lion to start pushing running programs from memory into the swap on cost of useless harddrive cache?
    Thanks for suggestions.

It's been a while but I recall using the "dd" command ("man dd" for info) to copy specific portions of data from one disk, device or file to another (in 512 byte increments).  You might be able to use it in a script to fetch parts of your larger file as you need them, and dd can be used to throw data from and/or to standard input/output so it's easy to get data and store in temporary container like a file or even a variable.
Otherwise if you can afford it, and you might with 8 GB or RAM, you could try and disable swapping (paging to disk) alltogether and see if that helps...
To disable paging, run the following command (in one line) in Terminal and reboot:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist
To re-enable paging, run the following command (in one line) in Terminal:
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist
    Hope this helps!
