Large format printing to PDF errors

Hi -
I'm creating 36" x 90" posters in Illustrator CS4 on Windows 7 and suddenly cannot print full-size to PDF.   I simply get the big red X that says, "Can't print Illustration".   Not exactly a helpful error message.
I've done it in the past, so losing the capability with no apparent explaination is frustrating.   After some reinstalling and trial/error, I've discovered that the max width (or height) is now 72".  Interestingly enough, older files the same size ALSO cannot now print to PDF.  (I can SAVE to PDF, I can't PRINT to PDF.  Printing brings a smaller file size I can email to my printer...)
Interestingly enough, saving the file as a Postscript and opening it in Photoshop also exhibits the same problem.
I have also isolated the problem to this particular setup/computer because it works like a champ at home (which is how I solved the problem this time) with the same OS/CS versions.
Is there something I'm missing?  Some setting that was inadvertently changed?
TIA

The size of the PDf can be directly related to it's content. ie: A PDF file containing only black text may be 100k, where as if you add an 8-bit tiff file, it may jump to 3 Mgs.
When you create your PDF (if size does matter!), you can adjust many areas by Optimizing it. (You can also do this with Distiller and the PS or EPS route). Use the "Advanced" menu, and use PDF optimizer to lower quality of the file. ie: turn on Jpg compression and adjust the compression ratio to your desired level. You can also downsample rasterized art (not vector!) by turning on downsampling. I'm not sure if there is an action you can create to do this or not. Never tried batching in Acrobat.
P.S. After optimizing it, DO NOT resave. The Optimized file will already be saved. Saving it again, removes much of the optimizing you just did.
Also, Acrobat 7 files tend to be a little larger than 6!

  • Unable to print from Photoshop CS4 in an iMac OS 10.6.3 to large format printer Epson 11880

Hi there! I was wondering if you could help me with this case.
Old computer: Mac G4  (purchased in 2002)
    Old OS: OS 10.4.11  (Tiger)
    CPU: Dual 1.25 GHz
    Memory: 2 RAM
    Software: Photoshop 7
Hardware: Large format printer: Epson 11880 (64” wide monster). Prints large posters, banners, etc.
As you can see, it is time for an upgrade...
    New computer: iMac
New OS: OS 10.6.3  (Snow Leopard)
    Processor Name: Intel Core i7
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
    Memory: 16 GB
    Software: Photoshop CS4
Hardware: Large format printer: Epson 11880
Situation: We hooked up everything and managed to print on the 11880 printer 2 times and printed two large format prints. On the third attempt, we encountered a serious problem...
Problem: After opening a file in Photoshop and sending it out for printing in the large format Epson printer, the file goes to the printer queue and stays there for 6 seconds, and then it disappears. It does not print. :-(
What we have done so far:
We made sure we downloaded the latest printer driver for this printer from Epson’s website.
The printer driver is correct. The computer talks to the printer and we are able to execute all the commands from the printer utilities panel. (i.e. check ink levels, clean heads, etc.)
And yes, the printer is okay, because we have been using it with the old G4 machine for about a year.
This problem got so frustrating, that we thought that something we transferred during the computer installation might be the culprit. So at one point we erased the hard drive on the new computer and reinstalled the operating system, and have not put any files from any old computers into this machine. The computer has nothing else in it. Except: The operating systems, and the Mac applications that come when the Mac comes out of the box. The only other program installed in it is Photoshop CS4 and the printer driver.
We were wondering if this was just a printing problem, period. So we added a small printer to the computer - and old Epson 2200 we have. We sent a file to this printer and there is not problem.
Perhaps, the file size might have been an issue? It does not matter. We can send a large 60 MB file to the printer or a small photograph measuring only 8 x 10, and these will linger in the queue for 6 seconds, and disappear never to be printed.
Temporary relief came when we got rid of Adobe Photoshop’s Preferences file. After getting rid of the file and allowing Photoshop to reconstruct it, we managed to print two large files on the printer. Then it failed again. Tried getting rid of the preferences again, and the trick did not work anymore. :-(
Another temporary relief came when we created another user in the computer. On the new user account it printed again a couple of times only to fail later.
And yes, the printer WILL print from other Mac programs. If for instance, we open a file on Preview, and send it to the printer and the file will be printed. And yes, we have managed to print very large files with this method.
In the last couple of days, we have spent 3 hours on the phone with the guys at Epson. They verified the driver and because the computer seems to be communicating with the printer and printing from other Mac applications, they suspected that the problem is with Adobe.
We called Adobe once, and spent 30 minutes with an Indian fellow who concluded that the problem was with how the computer handles the spooling. According to him, Photoshop sends the file to the computer and the computer seems to get rid of it. So he passed the buck and told us that the problem was with Apple.
We called Apple and spoke for 30 minutes with a friendly technician, who transferred us to a higher level techno-geek. I spent 1 more hour on the phone with Apple, and we tried everything. We went through Adobe’s knowledgebase and tried every suggested solution (see Adobe’s KB406452). It was with him that we found a temporary fix of removing the Preferences file, but the solution was short lived. He finally thought the problem was with Adobe as the printer is able to print from all applications EXCEPT Adobe Photoshop.
We called Adobe for the second time...and after waiting on hold from 1 entire hour, we got an Indian technician, that bless his heart, had a very thick accent and had no expertise, in my opinion. He was good at collecting data and he even made me share my computer screen so that he could troubleshoot the problem. After being constantly put on hold by him (because he had to consult with someone else), he passed the buck and said that it was Apple’s problem. I just told him that it was not as likely because all programs print EXCEPT Photoshop. After trying what I would consider a “hail Mary” of DELETING all the printers from my Library folder, and not replacing them, he recorded a case number for another Adobe technician to call us in a few days.
Because the above technician completely blew the Library, I just erased and reinstalled the OS. This time, I did not allow the OS to be updated - from 10.6.2 (that comes in the box), to 10.6.3. We tried printing using the 10.6.2 and had the same problem. :-(
Conclusion: I think it is a problem of Adobe CS4 not getting along with Apple’s new operating system. The Epson printer is doing fine, because it has been a product that has been in the market for almost 3 years. What is disappointing is that none of the companies wants to man up and say that it is a problem and that they are willing to work on it. Instead they pass the buck to the next company.
I can’t believe I am the only person experiencing this. Has anyone had this problem, and have you found a solution or workaround for it?

Dear Doyle, John and Gator Soup,
Thank you for your kind replies to my problem.
PS is assigned 70% RAM. In fact, I have never had so much RAM in my life. Files open at lightning fast speed! :-)  We have never considered a RIP as we do not have an intense workload. In fact all the files we have tried to print print well on our old G4 with Tiger and Photoshop 7, which at the moment has saved our butt. However it would be nice to get the new faster machine with Photoshop CS4 to talk to the Epson 11880.
Yes, we are printing directly to the printer. We have hooked up the computer via a 6 ft USB cable to the unit.
The specs and pixel dimensions of a typical file we print are:
Type of file: tif  (in this case it is an RGB file) // However, we avoid any color management from the computer or the printer when printing it at this time.
    File size: 60 MB
    Pixel size: 6796 x 3100
    Print size: 34" x 16" @ 200 dpi
I have not tried saving it as a pdf yet. Will try that next.
I did go to the Console on the Mac though, and recorded its activity between 5:14 pm - 5:19 pm when I tried to print a file.
Remember, the symptoms are:  We send a file to the printer...The file goes to the printer queue, and it lingers there for 6 seconds. The file then disappears.
Although there is a cryptic message of "invalid colorspace" in the log, I don't believe that the file is corrupt. First because we have tried several files, second because smaller versions of these can be printed in another Epson 2200 printer, and third because the large format images can still be printed using our old G4 machine with Tiger and Photoshop 7.
This might provide me with extra ammunition for when I call both Adobe and Apple on Monday. Apple has been quite good on customer support - particularly when they upgrade you to higher level geeks. ;-)   Do you have any idea I what time I should call Adobe so that I can get people on the western hemisphere to answer the phone? It seems that after a certain time they start speaking with an Indian accent over there.
Enclosed, for whatever is worth, is the Console's log:

  • Looking to purchase large format printer

I print photos on my HP 2610 and they are great! I would like to upgrade to a large format printer (24"). Which HP product would be a good entry level ($wise) that would print equal quality as my 2610?

Could you use pdf995 to intercept the print output and save directly to a pdf file??

What color management settings? Color mode? This sounds like you are simply not using the proper profile.

  • Best Large Format Printer with Aperture 3.1 & 10.6.5??

I have an Epson R1800 and am not pleased with my print results. Prints are too dark and generally lack "pop". I have read through threads here and other places and tried a lot of suggestions ... all to no real improvement.
Simple question -- which larger format printer (13") are you using that works very well with Aperture?
    Thanks.
    Ken

    Hi,
I use the Epson R1900 with very good results. I never expect what prints well to look good either on my monitor, or on Slideshows transfered to video usage. If it looks good on my monitor, that is what I want the settings and adjustments to be locked into for my files. I think my monitor is very true -- some proof of this is evidenced by prints I have made via the print services I have available to me via SmugMug. Those prints (either Bay Photo or EZPrints per my choice) look just like what is on my monitor when shipped to me, and that is super! The print process fundamentally must compensate in some manner to achieve the backlit look of a monitor. I get very close to that in the prints from Aperture now, by using the Brightness and other controls in the Print Dialogue.

  • PS CS5 PDF Large Format Printing Problem

I had to create a file for a sign (9 feet by 20 feet - 100 dpi) in PS CS5. Problem is I now need to send it to the sign printer. I need to make a PDF from the file but the save as makes the file size bigger than the PSD even with changing the compression settings. The other problem is I cannot print to PDF as when I try that the Acrobat X save as dialogue box never appears. The screen just goes back to the artwork. I have deleted the preferences, reinstalled Acrobat, etc. What can I do here?

To maintain vector output capability from Photoshop in PDF you can't output PDF by way of printing and using Acrobat Distiller. From the File Menu you choose Save As and then select Photoshop PDF from the list of file formats. It will retain vector data from embedded fonts and vector shape layers. I just tested it using Photoshop CS 5.5 64-bit and then viewing the results in Acrobat X.
That being said, Photoshop is a crude tool for passing along vector-based artwork. I don't like the vector shape layers feature very much at all because I find it very user un-friendly. I very much prefer to use Adobe Illustrator in conjunction with Photoshop. It's so much easier to control. I often paste AICB formatted paths into Photoshop's paths palette via the clipboard and then use the vectors as sources to create fills and other things. I'll manually create clipping paths on photos in Photoshop and save TIFF images with the clipping paths active to knock out the background when placing the TIFF in an InDesign or Illustrator layout. I'll create other vector objects in Photoshop to later export in .AI format to Illustrator. Ultimately the end result winds up in Illustrator as a single page layout or in InDesign as a multi-page layout. Both Illustrator and InDesign are far more capable than Photoshop at combining vector-based art and raster-based art together. When you save a PDF from InDesign or Illustrator there is no doubt your raster content and vector content will remain intact. Like the solution with Photoshop, in InDesign and Illustrator you simply choose to save the file in PDF format. No need for using the print to PPD and Acrobat Distiller post process step. Distiller comes in very handy for creating PDFs from lots of non-Adobe applications.

  • How can I make a photograph large enough for large format printing?

Is there a way to make an image larger on photoshop or illustrator? I will be printing on a large format latex printer. So the printer itself is excellent but its the image that i am struggling to acquire.
I have basic knowledge of the programmes but if you could explain it to me i could figure it out.....
I am aware of rasterize and vectors, but please  could you explain how they work, and if that is my solution.
I want to keep the original photograph as realistic as possible (would prefer not to have it traced on illustrator) and from research it says simply increasing the image size amount of pixels on photoshop does not help...perhaps it does, if you know please help!
This will be a print for an interior wall of an exhibition trailer, and we want to cover all the walls. Plus in future we will be printing for vehicle wraps so I need this knowledge! Help me

Let e try to explain briefly...
"Is there a way to make an image larger on photoshop or illustrator? I will be printing on a large format latex printer. So the printer itself is excellent but its the image that i am struggling to acquire.
    - The actual resolution necessary to print grand format depends on the printer.  Most of the large-to-grand format inkjets print at 600dpi.  Photoshop is the better application for sizig images, while Illustrator is the better application for sizing graphics ( ie., logos ) and type.  Use Illustrator to layout both the images and the graphics.  You typically would send the print vendor an appropriate PDF file ( that can be scaled ).

    - You most certainly can use photographs in large format.  The problem is you will have to setup the file scaled down.  In some cases, the output will have to be assembled in sections.  Let's take a section of 10 feet high x 36 feet long.  You'd setup your Illustrator file 2.5 feet high x 9 feet long ( 25% ) or 30 inch x 108 inch to be enlarged at the printer 400%.  Each time you enlarge an image 2x you cut its resolution in half.  So, an image starting at 300ppi will end up at 75ppi.  So, your image file would need to be 300ppi at 25%. 75ppi sounds low, right?  In actuality, it is enough to print grand format and the image appears smooth. Now the question becomes, how do I get an image large enough in Photoshop?  Remember, you'll need a 30" x 108" image plus bleed at 300ppi ( Placed in Illustrator at 100% ).  There are applications like Genuine Fractals or Image Doctor's "Blowup" which will enlarge an image file without degradation.  I use Genuine Fractals and the results are phenominal.
This will be a print for an interior wall of an exhibition trailer, and we want to cover all the walls. Plus in future we will be printing for vehicle wraps so I need this knowledge! Help me "
    - It'll become easier as you do more of this type of work.  The amount you end up scaling is up to you.  There are limitations as to how big a document can be in Illustrator.  I like 25% because it is similar to working on a print ad that is high resolution.  Another thing to remember is set your raster effects to High in Illustrator.  They will be retained in the PDF which will be enlarged 400% and the ending raster effects will be 75ppi just like the image.  Also, feel free to contact the print vendor and ask them questions.  You could send them what I've written here and see if they agree.  Let me know if you have any further questions.

  • Reader X installation killed large format printing

    After installation of Reader X,
I can no longer print large format on my Designjet 430 plotter. Under reader 9, I could plot just fine. The markup tools are fine, however, I need the ability to plot large format PDF. X will not let me plot anything larger than Letter size. I am using Windows 7 64 bit. HP does not have a driver on their website for windows 64 bit. As stated above I did not have a problem until I installed X. I would like to revert to Acrobat 9, but I cannot find a link to do so. Please let me know where I can find 9.

Hmm will that's odd I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.
Personally I do like 9.4 but as you say like the edit/markup features in Reader X.
Installing Adobe is so automatic now it's hard to get both on one system without running into problems.
I am sure some has both successfully but I would think registry edits would need to be done, and it's more work than needed just for printing.
If you find the print as image does not work make sure your print drivers are up to date, and you are able to select the paper size in printer properties in Adobe. I know for some this is an issue fortunately in my case checking that box was the solution, just not sure why it makes the difference.
Hopefully Adobe will come up with something.

  • Large format printing and scaling to size

    Hi all,
I've searched and cannot seem to find an answer.
I'm creating a Banner to go behind a stage for a press conference. The size is 7200 MM x 3300 MM which is too large for Illustrator to handle. So I'm working at 1/4 the size.
My background art is full size created in photoshop, but I scaled it in illustrator. Illustrator has a step and repeat pattern of the company logo on top of the background art.
Now my question is this, How do I generate a print ready PDF at full size? The files are going to be produced in Japan and I'm afraid there may be a language barrier if I ask them to print at 400%. I would prefer to send them a file where all they need to do is print it and not worry about it especially considering the time difference.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Chris

I am afraid John is putting oranges and apples together and calling them grapes.
There are certain devices that will require 255 ppi resolution of a file to properly output such as a Lambda or Lightjet for a fine art digital C print.
But In commercial printing it has never been the case the main reason is that for commercial printing you need a space between the viewer and the printed piece in order for them to be able to read the text and see the visual. The reason fo this is that this about communications and not about resolution.
This is not new to digital age as i started in this business when I was 16 years old and use to help my step brother on occasion at the new york post where the resolution of the printed piece was 60 dpi and that was for all images in the paper, which looked perfectly fine to everyone since it was only a newspaper.
When I was 19 I worked for an ad agency where we on occasion printed 24 sheet posters at something like 20 dpi it took up a whole empty floor of the office building to piece it together you left out sections where the columns where we just wanted to make sure they printed all the pieces.
There is a difference with printing large scale for fine art and printing for display and the resolution today as opposed to the past is the same perhaps it has actually improved today.
Then John makes the assumption that if you print to scale that Illustrator will do something to the file other than just print the same information at a different dimension and not a different file size.
In short you guys are quite correct and John has to rethink the information he is giving you and they guys you work of course know their business quite well.

  • IPhoto 6 Print to PDF Errors

Please advise: how can I restore the functionality of printing an iPhoto 6 photobook to PDF?
I was successful before my upgrade to Leopard in printing to PDF my iPhoto photobooks. However, no matter how I tried, even opening a new instance of iPhoto under another user, I received the same crash. I tried printing photobooks of 30 pages to Photobooks with just 4 pages filled. I tried not having any edited instances of the photo, but the program continued to crash. Each time, the loader would hit about 95% and then the entire program crashes with the following report:

But InDesign will export directly to PDF. Use the 'Export' option under the File menu. (I have InDesign CS3) You get a lot more options on how the PDF is generated compared with using the Print…Save As PDF route.

  • .ai to pdf for large format print

I am working with Illustrator CS6 and I have to prepare a file that will be printed as a 6 foot x 1.5 foot banner.
Actually, it will be several banners; the same design but only the name of the organization will change. I have everything on different layers in the .ai file.
I've done the artwork as an .ai file, everything is a vector, there are no rasterized images in it at all.
The problem is, I'm not sure the best way to save the file to send to the printer. The vendor is no help..... when I asked what file format they preferred there was the distinct sound of crickets (my bosses were going for price rather than expertise) and when I asked what resolution I should send the file, if I sent it as a jpeg, the print technician said "Ummmm.... 900?" (I don't know much, but I know that's not quite right.)
So, do I save the .ai file as a pdf, a pdf/x-1a, pdf/x-3 or pdf/x-4? Should I convert the text to outlines? There's a symbol in the artwork that includes text, does that text have to be converted to outlines as well?
Or should I just send them a file any which-a-way and see how the proof comes back?
I'd appreciate any advice you could give.

Because when I was asking them what file format they preferred, jpeg was one of the ones they recognized.
Plus, I was asking them before I started designing the banner... I was trying to get their requirements before starting.

  • Large Format printing problems via my Epson 3800

I am trying to print large card 17" x 22" from the rear feed tray on my Epson 3800 both from Lightroom 2 and Photoshop CS4 on my Mac Pro OSX running snow Leopard both register the actual size of the document in the preview window (see attached) but will only print out at A4 size. I am wondering if I'm doing something silly as this is the first time I've trying printing at this size.

Please be sure to visit the Page Setup dialog box in the lower-left section of the Print module and set up the "format for" and page size correctly there.
There are some step-by-step suggestions here:

  • Printing to PDF Error

I do a lot of editing PDF docs and have to print them. Occasionally I'll print a doc that I don't realize has some security enabled and if I do this instead of printing the document to PDF, the doc is printed to Word and numerous error tabs open indefinitely until I close out the program using task manager. I of course try to avoid this by not printing documents with security settings enabled, but can not always avoid it and it is a pain in the neck when it happens because I lose any word done prior to printing.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Is it a problem with my PDF program, or just an issue with Acrobat Pro 9 in general?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi uday,
Did you got the answer. If yes plz explain ?

  • CS5 Photoshop large format printing problem

In making large prints (35 x 70 inches, 30,000 x 13,000 pixels) using CS5 Photoshop on Mac OSX 10.6.3, the last 12 to 18 inches of the print is solid black. Using the same file and computer with CS4 Photoshop the file prints correctly. The only difference is CS5 and sending 16 bit color to the printer.
CS5 also prints considerably slower in that the printer stalls. Using print preview prior to printing shows the image to be correct but the print itself is incorrect.
Is there a known issue printing with CS5 Photoshop and large images? Any workarounds? Suggestions on how to track down the source of the problem?

I just got off the phone for the second time in 2 weeks, with the same problem, Printing solid black rectangles, on all   of my Epson printer [2200, 7600, 9800]. I was on for over 8 hours last week and 2 hours today , and nothing that was tried has helped!
Last week I shut my whole system down in the evening, and the following mourning it was back working fine, last nite it did it again and I shut everything down about 11pm and turn it∫back on this am and the problem is still there, The supervising tech said  he tried everything he knew how to do, and the problem was going to some other tech investigation group and it would take 2 to 3 days to ©´t a response about this problem.  I print for a living and I am now out of business until they come up with a fix.
By the way when I print off my desktop in preview the pictures print normal, and a tip I øfƒer is when your testing make a postage size picture and test it on 8.5x11 plain paper, and if you ofse† it to a corner you can get 8 test on one sheet of paper.
