Large jump in my BB usage in October 2010 - is it ...

I use the basic BB service with 10Gb per month allowance. I typically use between 9 and 14Gb per month. In October, this jumped to 35GB so I am being charged £25 for the privilege when nothing has changed wrt my usage pattern.
Two questions for everyone:
Has anyone had a sudden unexpected jump in October?
Has anyone successfully questioned BT about usage? (when I called I was told the system was "always correct" which is a bit ironic when I look at the number of issues we are all having with BT's services)
Thanks in advance.

That is a rather large jump but could be down to almost anything.

Do you have multiple computers that did a windows or software update during the month?
If all else fails, change the password to your wireless router.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

  • Sudden large jump in roaming data usage-very weird

I travel internationally a lot and have a 100 MB international data plan each month. I reset the iPhone's usage statistics to track my usage and until a few hours ago, had used less than 1 MB of cellular data. I then turned roaming on to check an e-mail (basic text, no attachments), had nothing else going on, and after shutting off Data Roaming noticed that my usage (received and sent) was over 70 MB, almost all of it ”received“ data. There is no way I could have downloaded over 70 MB of data on my MacBook Pro in that time frame over WiFi, let alone on an iPhone via 3G. I've not known the iPhone's usage statistics to be error prone, but have no other explanation. AT&T's billing site hasn't updated yet so I'll have to wait to see what the ”official“ usage was, but has anyone else seen this? Again, I started with less than 1 MB and that jumped to over 70 MB within a minute or two of e-mail use without attachments. In contrast, I spent several days in Switzerland recently and even used the iPhone to check Maps using GPS and only used 15 MB total.

  • I have a MacBook Pro 13inch 2.4GHz (Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb RAM, 250Gb HDD, NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics, SD card slot, up to 10 hour battery life)bought in October 2010 in the UK. The charger has stopped working. Which model and voltage do I need please?

I have a MacBook Pro 13inch 2.4GHz (Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb RAM, 250Gb HDD, NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics, SD card slot, up to 10 hour battery life) bought in October 2010. The charger has been playing up for a while now - the light going out but coming back on when I move the cable a bit - faulty connection it seems. It has now stopped working at all.
Apple UK charge a whopping £65 for a replacement - and the reviews are AWFUL for it!
I need to know which one I need - 45w, 60w and 80w are listed - can someone tell me please? If I'm going to pay this price I want to make sure I get the right one!
Also, is a genuine Apple one available on Amazon UK, does anyone know please?
Any help will be much appreciated.
Meanwhile my battery is going down.....

Thanks for that wjosten. Much appreciated.
I've read here on Apple's site that the 85W version will work, as you say, and that it would run cooler with a 13" Macbook - I have a 13" MBP of course but assume this would be the same with mine. I wonder if running cooler is a good thing (it sounds as if it is) and it would be better for me to get the 85W version than the 60W one?
Then I have to decide whether to pay the (extortionate as it seems to me, though I may be wrong) £65 from Apple (bearing in mind the rotten reviews here of the Apple product), or risk a cheaper alternative from Amazon UK, at around £20 (also with various rotten reviews)... Any suggestions? Please? :-)

  • Has PeopleSoft certified usage of Office 2010 with FSCM and HCM

Has PeopleSoft certified usage of Office 2010 32-bit and 64-bit with its products FSCM and HCM in versions 8.9 and 9.1?

Certification is done at the PeopleTools level if I'm not mistaken. Office 2010 is certified for Tools 8.49. For Tools 8.50/8.51 only Excel is mentioned and it is certified for Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) and Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit). A lot of other combinations are still planned for certification.

    HI G.T.Morgan,
Can you please share the error message that you are getting ? Are you transfering the data using Time Machine or any third party Back up tool ? if yes , kindly not use that , as that could cause Adobe Softwares not to work . If you wish to download CS5 , kindly use the following link to download and install it directly on to your new machine .
    Download CS5 products

  • Verisign announced a new CA certificate in October 2010, Verisign Class 3 Secure Server G3. When will this be included in the CA list of the browser? It is in other browsers already (IE, Safari, etc)

Verisign announced a new CA certificate in October 2010, Verisign Class 3 Secure Server G3. When will this be included in the CA list of the browser? It is in other browsers already (IE, Safari, etc), yet in Firefox you're currently prompted with a security warning for a trusted CA.

That is one of the intermediate certificates that VeriSign is using. Intermediate certificates are part of the chain that is formed by the web server certificates and build-in root certificates. Such an intermediate certificate needs to be send by the server and is not included by default in Firefox. Firefox will store such an intermediate certificate for future use when a website sends it.

  • Can I connect my October 2010 Macbook Air to a Thunderbolt display?

Does it only work with the MacBook Airs that came out today?

Sorry but it only works with a Mac that has Thunderbolt. An october 2010 MacBook Air will therefore not work with it. But you can still purchase the older Apple LED Cinema Display for the next year or two.

  • Very large jump in number of files on HD

I use SuperDuper every Saturday to clone my #1 HD to my #2 and #3 HD's (I'm a little paranoid) using smart update (incremental).
Last Saturday, 8/11, when I ran SD it evaluated about 490K files. This Saturday when I ran SD it evaluated about 840K files. I used Disk Utilities to look at #1 and it indicated about 840K files. Before I ran SD on #3 it indicated about 490K.
Last week Disk Utility indicated I used about 30G and it now indicates about 35.5G.
I have done nothing in the last week to increase my files by 70% or add 5G+. I've update a few app's but that is it. I have scanned #1 using VirusBarrier X6 and have also used Disk Utility to Verify #1.
I have also used HoudahSpot to look at files created/modified on or after 8/11 on #1 and there are no where near 350K. Note, I don't use Time Machine.
This is driving me crazy; any thoughts?
System Info: Pro Mac running 10.8 since July 26th.

    Issue identified and solved.
When I installed Mountain Lion I went through and tested various programs to insure nothing got screwed up. I have a pref pane called Macaroni which runs a number of Unix like maintenance tasks on a regular schedule. I had turned it off and forgot to test it. One of the tasks it runs once a month is called Removing localized files; which, as you might think strips all non-English [this is configurable] lproj directories from all System directories, all application bundles and any other lproj directories found in the Applications directory and lproj directories found in the Users directory.
This morning I remembered it and turned it back on. I then manually ran it and the file count is back in a more "normal" range. It reduced the file count by over 200,000 and knocked off about 2G of disk storage.

  • Larger disk for Mac Mini 4.1 (mid 2010)?

    Hello,
Just wondering if there any issues that might preclude replacing my original 500 Gb internal hard drive with, say, a 1 Tb drive?
    Thanks.

That is fine. The only restriction is the the height of the drive has to be 9.5 cm or less.

  • Anomalous broadband usage

My average monthly broadband use over the last year is just under 21GB. On 28 November I was warned that my month's usage was 28GB and the next day was 36 GB . In the evening, the BT broadband meter showed that I had used almost 50gGB and this morning, the figure was 56GB. My Homehub shows that, over the past 5 days, the data transmitted and received figures are 0.7 and 3.3 GB respectivly. BT have confirmed that no unauthorised devices have been connected to my router and that, according to their figures, my usage has been around 7 - 9 GB per day over the past 4 to 5 days. My only unusual computer use has been to attempt to install Windows XP udates and using the Scrabble app on two iPads across the internet. In neither case did activity lights on router, modem or powerline hubs show anything other than the occasional flash. Has anyone had any problems with either Scrabble or XP updates eating huge amounts of bandwidth?

My IT usage is boringly stable and my monthly broadband consumption reflects this. That's what makes this very sudden and very large jump in my broadband usage so odd. The only things that I can think of that might explain it are using Scrabble and trying to update Windows XP. These attempts used almost 100% of the laptop's CPU for an hour or so but, as far as I can see, never actually downloaded anything nor showed that any update data was flowing from the Windows site to my laptop. I certainly never saw activity lights on the modem or router flashing like mad and, in any cases, the laptop would not be physically capable of accepting more than about 10GB of data before the hard drive was completely full. Nevertheless, My gut feel is that the Windows update process is most likely to blame although I cannot see how, particularly as the router itself shows little data having been received. The use of Scrabble is a possibility as it is only within the past few days that I have started to use this. That there is such a huge discrepancy between the router measurement of the data it is receiving and the BT broadband meter's measurement does not improve my confidence in these metrics.

  • Flash player 11 is very glitchy on ALL browsers and makes my CPU usage 100%,Streaming media headache

flash player 11 is very glitchy on ALL browsers and makes my CPU usage 100%, making all youtube and pandora or any streaming media a headache, i have a low-end but good quality Emachine with Windows 7 Sv pk. 1, AMD Athalon Processor 2650e 1.6 GHz 2GB ram 32-bit, which isn't that bad, it used to play HD videos and everything without a skip or lag, it is virus clean, and clean of any large bulky programs, the only thing that went wrong was the fact that the adobe flash updates slowly but surely made it worse, AND it will not let me roll-back to an older version anymore like it used to, so WTF is up? no one seems to have an answer for this, and it seems like ADOBE is doing everything in it's power to not let me ask this question or get it solved, maybe it's because I AM TOO SMART FOR IT AND KNOW IT'S A FAILURE. so please, anyone who actually has a degree in this field is welcome, but no BS anymore, i want answers.

The jump to FP11 was pretty significant with Stage3D. Now Flash Player has a lower level access to your computers GPU to offload playing video and 3d rendering to the GPU. However if your systems GPU isn't up to the task you really won't see that performance gain.
Enter H264 video decoding. A large segment of the Flash usage market is simply viewing video. For sites without fallback in mind (or don't mind software rendering fallback), video may suffer. Using the GPU accelerated video classes may make it difficult for your system to view playback. Disabling hardware acceleration as recommended above would revert you back to software (CPU) decoding to check if your system itself is the issue (and not all the new GPU additions). You did that yet you're still having an issue.
Just to clarify, as I have an eMachine (for accounting), your computer is very much in the "budget" margin. You have a 3 year old single core 1.6ghz AM2 CPU with 512kb of L2. That's the K8 series. This is a very underpowered, single thread loving CPU. Only the most optimized Flash sites and lower end videos (720p or below) should play, but I'm not even sure if they'll "play well". It depends on your GPU.
Also you should know they have an official list of unsupported chipsets and drivers based on many factors. Here's a list for FP11 and AIR3:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/stage3d-unsupported-chipsets-drivers-flash.html
Check the bottom of the screen to see what Flash is reporting your rendering mode is. For example, mine states:
Your gpu supports Stage3D in both Baseline and Constrained profile!
    Baseline RenderMode:
    DirectX9
    Constrained RenderMode:
    DirectX9 (Baseline Constrained)
This probably won't get better in the future for you. Flash is not a low end multimedia runtime. It does require and utilize high end hardware in a much more reliable way.

  • Fx TimeCode In Premiere CS5.5 - Non Linear Evolution (Jumps Every 24 Frames) ?

Hi, Can anyone please provide some feedback on an issue I am having with an fx TimeCode that I have placed in a video clip of a sporting event? I have set the TimeCode to SMPTE format with the source set as either "Cip" or "Generate" and the TimeCode display is set to 25. The timer starts at a specific point in the event and runs through just past the end of the event. If I advance the video one frame at a time the timer follows this in a linear manner with increments of 0.01 seconds per frame for 24 frames then the timer jumps by 0.76 seconds when advancing to the 25th frame. It seems as though the timer is compensating every 25th frame to keep in synchrony with real time in the video. My thought were that the timer should advance by 0.04 seconds per frame for a 25fps video in true linear manner without these large incremental jumps? Is there any setting I can use to get the time to advance in linear manner by 0.04 secs per frame instead of 0.01 secs per frame for the 1st 24 frames followed by this large jump of 0.76 secs on the 25th frame? I am trying to extract timings at the granularity of hundredths of a second so any help in resolving this would be most appreciated. Rgds

I think that I might not be interpreting the SMPTE timecode format correctly, my original understanding was that it was in the format of:
    hh:mm:ss:hundredths of seconds
however, I am now thinking it is in the format of:
    hh:mm:ss:frames
So, the timecode is counting time in the granularity of seconds and the figures to the right of the seconds after the colon is the framce count in that second. On the assumption that this is correct then an SMPTE timecode is not what I need. I need a timer that can count in one hundredths of a second.
Any suggestions for inserting a timer to count in one hundredths of a second most appreciated.
    Rgds
