Large library - can't synch. What gives?

My iTunes music library is way too large for my iPod classic, and I haven't synched for quite a while. I just updated to the most recent Itunes.
There used to be a "do you want iTunes to select the songs for your iPod" option, after it told me my library was too large. Now all I get is the "can't synch/your library is too large" message, and when I click OK, nothing else happens. [the synch options for movies, TV etc are unchecked, and I am desperately trying to avoid picking songs, playlists manually]
Is the "iTunes can create a playlist for your iPod" still available? and if so why can't I access it?
I considered restoring the ipod to factory settings, but I am afraid i could end up with an empty ipod, and no way to add music.

When your iPod is connected, go to the ipod's screen, music, and then select "selected playlists..." instead of "sync all music". Then create a playlist with the music you select that will fit on your iPod.

I am not very tecchy, so have been struggling alot with this.
Originally tried to COPY over my WHOLE Itunes Library (including my old ripped CDs) to a USB flash drive., for security. Which has sort of backfired.
ThoughI followed the instructions, my Itunes Library disappeared from my PC and my songs ended up in a different form on my USB stick, just a bunch of albums/songs, NO "ITUNES" FORMAT! Is that normal - I wasn't expecting that?! Can I get it back to my PC in original form? I've tried to restore my PC to an earlier time but no luck there either.
I do have a Nano IPOD - is it easy to synch my music back with PC from that? I've looked online at some rubbishy youtube videos, but it looks very complicated.
I do not want to lose all my old music that I have collected over 30 years. Sometimes, I rue the day I ever started copying over my CDs to Itunes.
Any help would be gratefully received. I have tried looking online but I find it too complicated.
Is it worth me ringing Apple support for help (my nano is out of warranty time though).

I had to ring Apple in the end. I find their stuff very complicated. It took an hour to sort this out. The woman I spoke to was great. But what a palaver to just copy my Itunes account somewhere.

Invalid reference on data I can see! What gives?

I use a ton of SUMIFS and AVERAGEIFS formulae on a monster of a sports stats spreadsheet and it seems that since upgrading to Numbers 3.0, some references have been lost but not others. In other words, some of my SUMIFS and AVERAGEIFS work as expected and others not. For the ones that don't, however, I can SEE the data and there's nothing different about it in terms of format than what's in the formulae that works. I don't understand why Numbers can't see the columns I'm seeing it. What is going on here? Could it be that the columns are very far "east," like in the FJ to IJ range? Could this be user error on my part?

Sorry if you're not familiar with ice hockey stats. I want to know the total number and per-game average number of shots on goal taken at 5-on-5 manpower by my team (the New York Rangers) and by the opposition in each individual period of play during games on the road. This works without any issue on the Rangers data (first image below) but fails on the opposition data (second image). The data I am trying to sum and average is the last image.

Are you saying that the file, edit, view, etc buttons are missing? Just hit ''Alt'' to temporarily enable them. You can add them back for good by going to ''Firefox > Options'' and enabling the ''Menu bar''.

Sent message doesn't appear in sent mail or any other mail folder. I only know I sent it because it comes back with the reply. What gives?

Today I sent a message on the Mail program that did not appear in the Sent messages or any other Mail folder. I know I sent it only because it was included in a reply that came back. Didn't happen with any other messages I sent today (or any others that I can recall). What gives? I used to have complete faith in my Sent folder. Thanks and apologies in advance if similar queries have been answered recently or multiple times. I'm having a hard time getting used to this new support format.

If so, that's what I wanted anyway. But I never thought about this box in Mailbox behavior, as I tend to go with default settings, and I'm no computer expert as you can tell.

It will only apply to new messages. Try it out and see if you can see your Sent messages. If you want them to be accessible on other devices, you will have to change the setting back. Just changing the setting a couple of times may get the online account working properly, so don't be afraid to play around with it.
If this is a MobileMe account, I would expect it to work properly. Try it in local mode. Then switch it back to server mode. Rebuild your send mailbox. Maybe after all of that it will be working better.

A couple of other items:
1) I am guessing Apple does not keep a history of all my music purchases? As I did not have my entire library backed-up anywhere, and relying on the music I have on my ipod and my iphone as my only source of itunes music....I have lost over 500 songs!!!
2) I used to have an Apple account under another account name, and since have switched to a new account name. Is there anyway to find the history of purchases from my old Apple account name and transfer these over to my new account name and onto my new laptop?

The iphone/ipod is NOT a storage/backup device. Not maintaining a backup copy is a big mistake.
You can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone/ipod to your computer:
Authorize your computer for all accounts and then click File>Transfer Purchases

From System Preferences, Mouse, Point & Click, Secondary click. Go to it hover over Secondary click and watch the short video sequence change it left right, left right, you will see exactly what is does. This is pretty surprising and wierd that even Reader 10.1.1 is crashing on your system. It works pefectly for me.
Would it be possible for you to get the crash dump, and upload it, so that I can have a look at the same.
Download PROCDUMP from <http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/dd996900.aspx> and extract it to a folder, say, c:\temp\procdump.exe
Open cmd prompt and type "cd c:\temp".
Launch the browser and open the PDF.
Open task manager, sort processed by name. Two AcroRd32.exe instances should have been launched. Note the PID (a small integer like 5588) corresponding to the AcroRd32.exe with the higher memory usage; this is the process that must be crashing. Note this PID.
On the cmd window, type "procdump -e -ma 5588 c:\temp\01.dmp" (replace 5588 with the actual PID of the process noted in Step 4). Procdump will now wait for the aoolication to crash. If it throws a EULA, accept it.
Perform your steps to cause the crash.
Procdump will have created a dump file at "c:\temp\01.dmp". Zip it up (since it will be 100s of MBs otherwise) and share with me.

That can sometimes be produced by real-time back-up utilities/services interfering with writes to the iTunes library files.
Are you using a real-time backup? (Carbonite, Mozy, Black Blaze?)

Before you try to copy your iPhoto library anywhere, make sure it does not have any inconsistencies, that could prevent copying. Run a rebuild, using the First Aid tools. See this post by Old Toad on how to do it: Re: iPhoto version 8.1.2

That error message is very typical for copying between incompatible file systems. I get this error message usually when I try to move iPhoto libraries or Aperture libraries to drives with MS Dos (FAT) or unix formatting, or when some of the image files inside the library contain ethnic characters (Umlaute), have very long file names, or the filenames contain other special characters.
Do you have any other large data sets that you could try to move to your NAS instead of your iPhoto library? Movies, Music? Then move these first to have enough working space, when you try to move the iPhoto library. If you are running out of space, it will be difficult for the OS to move large amounts of data at once. That will need working space.
