Large new TV shows

Have you noticed how big the new shows like Desperate Housewives are? Season 1 and Season 2 episodes were no larger than 200 MB. The new Season 3 shows are almost 500 MB!!!!!! Episode 3 is 531 MB!!!
Certainly the screen is larger, and it is great that they are seeking for better resolution for the HiRes TVs, but wait a minute Apple, if you think that a 30, 60 or 80 GB iPod is going to hold a full season or the five latest episodes of 3 or 4 seasons of our favorite shows, you are absolutely mistaken inflating the size of these files. Until you start building and shipping 250 GB iPods you should keep the size of these movie files small, sacrificing some size and resolution, but optimizing the available space on the hard drives of our iPods.
Don't expect that we will buy more shows if we don't have the space to make them fit in our iPods. Use some more common sense before you do something like this.

Increasing size of drives in the new iPods and optimized size of video files help, but do not solve this problem. There is no way you can fit two movies, some video podcasts, a couple of TV shows, music, photos, and on top of everything 50-100 apps in 16 or 32 Gb in your iPhone.

To change a book size duplicate it (select the book in the source pane and press command and D) since text flow and picture placements can change due to the size differences - then click on change themes, select the same theme and the new size

How do I move Elements 8 projects (slide shows) from a Windows XP computer to new Windows 7 computer that also has Elements 8 on it so that the slides shows will work (Elements 8 works well on the Windows 7 computer & I have done several new slide show projects on it)? I tried backup & restore without success. I have also found the .psess files and copied them to the catalog in the new computer but when the sides shows are opened none of the images or music is there. Only the text that I entered shows. I have even tried to replicate the file paths from the XP computer to the new computer to see if that will help.

UPDATE: By a stroke of luck I happened to find a catalog link (a PSE8D file) in the 'My Catalog' file where the imported data was stored. When I clicked on it to investigate what is was 'magically' all of my transferred projects appeared in Organizer. Upon further investigation I found that the projects transferred from my XP computer were stored in a hidden catalog that had to be accessed through the Custom Location option in Catalog Manager (accessed by clicking File then Catalog then Custom Location). No Windows or Elements search revealed this fact. I am appreciative that I just got lucky. The Adode/Photoshop company was absolutely of no help. If fact to me their structure is designed to avoid contact with their customers unless you're buying a new product. Their products have many good features (even though user unfriendly) and it's a shame they don't value their customers more once the sale is completed.
Bottom line: All of the projects (sideshows) have been recovered and work in my new Windows 7 computer. I hope my experience helps others.

Itunes no longer syncs new tv shows to my iphone4 after 10.5.1.42 update

I just did the itunes update to version 10.5.1.42, and now when I try to synch with my iphone4, it will NOT copy any of my new TV shows from my itunes into the phone.
I'm on a PC, using windows 7, 32 bit.
I have never had a problem like this before -- I download tv shows to itunes and then synch them to my phone all the time. I have all the settings checked the same as before. The synch process appears to work successfully, but it never actually transfers the shows, and when I go to look at the videos on my phone, none of the "new" ones are there.
The only "work around" I can find is to download straight to my phone from the cloud. That is a major hassle for me, as the wifi currently available to me (at work) is super slow and would take well over an hour just to download one show. Not to mention I shouldn't have to do that.
is there any fix for this? Can I roll back my itunes to the previous version that worked just fine?

Finally, I had time to do a on-line support session with the Apple Care help people (excellent). We went through and verified a lot of things. Finally, he had me run the disk utility and run "repair disk permissions". That resolved things and it works now.
Also related is that the iOS 7.1 update installed a lot of stuff on the iPhone - including iMovie, Numbers, Pages, Keynotes - stuff that I will use on the iPad but not on the iPhone. The result of automatically installing all these things on the iPhone was to but it way over the limit on memory. I deselected thos apps (and a few others) plus some movies and am now below the memory limit on the iPhone.
Things are now working well with both the iPhone and iPad - both syncing correctly. So, with that, I will close out this case.

New mail shows up with an older message

Hi, I'm using Mail as my primary email program downloading from a university email account. I have a ton of mail in it, over 3000 messages in my inbox and a couple thousand in my outbox.
Sometimes when I get a new message, the name of the person it is from shows up in the list at the top correctly, but when I open the message, it is an older message from someone else. This isn't a problem with the server, when I check my mail through the university webpage the correct new message shows up. And there is no way to fix it, even if I find the original email that is opening instead of the new one and erase it, the new message will never show up in my Mail window and I have to check the university webpage to find out what my email said.
It is REALLY irritating Is this because I have too many emails in my folders or what? Is there a way to fix it?

Well, you can't have messages in your Outbox because that only appears when a message is being sent, not afterward. Your messages are in your Sent mailbox.
It could be that you have too many messages on your Mac, but I think the problem is more likely a corrupted Mail index. To rebuild it, do this:
1. Quit Mail if it's running.
2. Go to Home/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file.
3. Restart Mail and allow it to import your existing messages; when it's done, check to see if your problem has disappeared.
4. To help prevent this from happening, either delete messages you don't need, or archive them somewhere else not in your Mail folder.

Trouble downloading new tv shows to iPod Classic

Am having trouble with my iPod Classic. Recently purchased new tv shows and successfully downloaded them to both my computer and iPad; but will not sync onto my iPod(although) there is more than even storage space available. Help!

Not all iTunes video can be transferred to iPod, If the video resolution or video bit rate beyond iPod limitation, even though they are mp4 video, you can't upload them to iPod. For example, some iTunes purchased movie are High definition movie, the resolution is too high to play on iPod, You can highlight the problem video in iTunes and choose Create iPod or iPhone version from the Advanced drop down menu. It's the same in Dreamweaver's Live view. It shows the new color on Desktop view and not in the cell phone or tablet view. Also, I changed the font itself in one of the DIVs and it shows up in the new font on the desktop view and website viewed thru the computer, but, not on the tablet or cell phone. Can someone please explain. I want to be able to change the fonts and colors for viewing in the tablet and cell phone, also. The fonts were all standard fonts. Problem with importing photos to MBP: The new event shows up at the beginning of Events rather than at the end

When I imported photos on my older Mac computers G4 and G5), the new event would show up as the last event in EVENTS. With my new MBP, the new event shows up consistently at the beginning of EVENTS (actually as the second event), and it is a big inconvenience to have to drag it to the end (through some 500 events). How can I change this? Thank you for your help!

If you have the sort set to manual then you must manually sort the events as you choose - there is no "sort manually the way I am thinking" setting - manual is manual - and for what ever reason with the current version of iphoto second from the top is where events start for you to then manually put where you want
BTW - events are a poor choice for organizing photos and extremely inflexible (as you are seeing) - albums and folder are much more powerful and flexible and are the better way to organize photos

Cant Find ....... Choose File^ New Slide Show

I am trying to make a slideshow for the first time. ( iPhoto4.0.3) I can't find the .... " Choose File ^ New Slide Show " in the iPhoto File drop down menu to make a slide show, it only gives me New Album, New Smart, Close Window, Import, Export, Trash , Page set up, Print ... as options. After I figure this out and make a slide show with music, etc. What is the best option for burning it to a DVD for others to view on their home DVD player(s)

With the iPhoto window in organize view you will see the slideshow option at the bottom of the window.
Select the photos or albums you want first then click on slideshow.
To save it, go to the menu and choose export, the export to QuickTime. Make your Quicktime selections - then export.
The Quicktime Movie file can be viewed by anyone with QuickTime installed.

On the mac's system preferences: click the iCloud icon, then "sign out" button. After, you can enter the new ID.

New Nano Shows only 900MB free space...Why? Where is the other 100?

My brand new nano show that there is only 900MB free for music, not the 1GB. Why? It is only holding 181 songs, nowhere near the 240. Any ideas?

In iPod's About menu, the hard disk size is reported as slightly less than the technical specifications for the iPod. The same is true if you connect iPod to your computer in disk mode look at the info or properties window for the disk.
Why the difference? Most hard disk manufacturers measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 million bytes (1000 * 1000). A 4 GB disk, therefore, is one that holds 4 billion bytes. Computers, including Windows computers, Macintosh computers and iPod, measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 048 576 bytes (1024 * 1024). The difference in these two calculations is what causes the drive to appear as 3.7 GB on a computer, but actually be a 4 billion byte disk.
The ipod operating system and games etc will only account for a miniscule amount of the used space.
This difference wont change how many songs you can get onto your ipod. Bear in mind, the song average advertised on the ipod is based on 4 mins per song, encoded at 128kbps in AAC format.
It is only holding 181 songs, nowhere near the 240.
Bear in mind that the song limit advertised is based on 4 minute per song, 1MB per minute, encoded as 128 kbps in AAC format.
Check the encoding of your songs. To do this, right click one the sorting columns in iTunes tick bit rate, then click this new column to sort the songs by bit rate. Any songs that are encoded at higher than 128 kbps will be causing excess space to be used for storage. To change the bit rate of these songs you can convert them to AAC format (sound quality will be lost). Or you can reimport them from CD/Computer once you have changed the import settings as detailled below, but that could be time consuming.
To convert go to the edit menu, select preferences, click the advanced tab, and select importing.For best song capacity on the iPod, make sure that the encoder is set to "Import using AAC encoder", and "High quality 128 kbps". Hit OK. Then collect together all the high encoded songs and select them all (click the top one and hold shift, then click the bottom one). Right click the highlighted area and go to "Convert selection to AAC". This could take a while if there are many songs.
Once complete, go to the Edit menu, and select "Show duplicate songs". Delete all the "old" songs, recognisable by their bitrate, format or size. Again, to show these, right click a sorting column, and tick the respective ones.
Once this is done, update the iPod.
If your songs are all changed into 128kbps AAC and are mostly all around 4 mins long, then you should get very close to the song limit advertised

IPhoto crashes when creating a new slide show

iPhoto immediately crashes, when I try to create a new slide show.
I have already tried to create a completely new library, but happens just the same: I want to create a new slide show (with only some pictures), and then the program crashes and I must kill it via "force quit".
I also de-installed iPhoto and then installed it again. No change at all. The program chrashes when I try to create a new slide show.
Any idea what could help?

It looks like there's something in your account that's the culprit. It could be a preference file other than iPhoto's. Here's how to test that:
Trouble Shooting Preferences
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
1 - close all applications.
2 - open your Home/Library folder and Option-drag (copy) the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
3 - select the contents of your Home/Library/Preferences folder and drag them into the Trash bin in the Dock. You will be asked to provide your Admin password.
4 - reboot.
5 - run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed
6 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
B - Open the Preferences folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace or Skip button.
D - reboot.
7 - If the problem is NOT fixed, drag the contents of the Preference folder on the Desktop into the Home/Library/Preference folder and replace the entire contents that were created by clicking on Replace.
8 - reboot.
