Large PDF files for vehicle graphics

Hi, Acrobat Experts
I have created the design for graphics on the side of a truck. The file is created in Indesign and the background photo is a 278 MB TIF made in Photoshop at 210dpi in full size. The size of the file is 409 cm by 210 cm.
The printer wants a PDF to print from.
When I try to create a PDF of the high res file in Indesign, I get a message saying that I am exceeding the allowable file size and it refuses to create the PDF.
Is there really a max file size for a PDF??
I am using CS3 and my Mac is a Dual 2 GHZ PowerPC G5 with 3.5 GIG of physical ram.
What is the best and most common files to deliver for bitmap vehicle graphics?
Any good input would be highly appreciated.
Sincerly,
ggaarde

Hi grafitti
Thank you for your reply.
Bridge says that my Tiff is 259 MB and the Indesign file is 22MB
I think I used LZD compression to create the Tiff.
I would imagine that the PDF is not honoring that compression. Best not to use it.

When I open the file in photoshop it shows in the footer the doc size being 1.98 /1.96 GB! and the scratch size is 2.9/2.21 GB
That is the size after it's decompressed whish is more realistic to the size the image will be in the PDF. After your vector information is added to that, I could see it being over 2GB easy.

I can try to down sample a copy to 150 dpi and see if it will work. Will it retain vector properties for the type and outlines?
Vector qualities should remain vector (not based on resolution). Are you adding them in InDesign or are you adding them in Photoshop (I'm trying to figure out how InDesign is coming in to the picture and why you are using it if all the art is done in Photoshop). If this is strictly done in Photoshop, you may try to save as a PDF from there I suppose.
ggaarde wrote:
Can you please explain what ID means in this regard?
ID = InDesign
So, if I were you and I were creating your art for the wraparounds strictly in Photoshop, I would first try to save to a PDF from Photoshop. If you are just doing the image in PS (Photoshop) then Placing in to ID (InDesign) then adding your vector graphics, I would simply try and downsize the image resolution first (again, check with the printer to see what is acceptable first).

  • In large PDF files my cursor moves around the page at warp speed. It does not seem to make any difference if I slow it down with Sys Prefs. This is not only in preview but also other programs to open PDFs.

In large PDF files the cursor moves at warp speed with a mind of it's own, I've tried slowing it down in Sys Pref with no luck. On small files cursor action is normal. This happens in Safari, Preview and other programs that use PDF files. Sorry to say this does not seem to be a new problem with 7.# I've had it with prvevious versions of operating system Right now I'm using a Apple wireless mouse and key board. Using the USB keyboard and mouse the same problem does not go away.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Can't download large pdf file

I'm trying to download a large pdf file (26.2 mb) to my iPad.  It appears to download, then appears, as 440 blank pages.  It offers to open the file in iBook, but that also doesn't have any results.  Is there a limit on the size of the pdf file it can handle?  I tried to e-mail it from my computer, but the file is too big for my e-mail program.  This is a book I would really love to read on the iPad--how can I get it there?  thanks, B.

Yes, I see that as well. Talk about a bad assumption. I thought from what I had read that the feature worked like Spotlight on the Mac. In fact I could swear I've read that on Apple's site somewhere. Not the first time I was wrong and certainly not the last. Alas I stand corrected again.
Frankly, after investigating the search function further - IMHO - it seems pretty useless.  A number of the apps that I use have their own search functions built in. I've read that you can search for a missing app on your iPad with this feature, but other than that and finding contacts and emails it seems pretty pointless to me.

  • A pdf file failed to convert to word, presumably because of size.  how do i split a large pdf file into manageable secrtions?

I'm running Abode Reader XI version 11.0.7.  Repeated attempts to convert a large (439 page) file, a dissertation, failed.  How do I split a large pdf file like this into manageable sections for conversion?

    Hi Mike,
Your 11MB file is well within the file-size limits for ExportPDF, but depending on the number of pages, complexity of the file (and yours doesn't sound complex), and your connection speed, it is possible that the service is simply timing out before it can finish processing. These steps can help:
If the file already contains editable text (that is, it isn't a scanned document), try disabling OCR as outlined in this this document: How to disable Optical Character Recognition (OCR) when converting PDF to Word or Excel.
Clear the browser cache and try again.
    Try a different browser.
Let's start there. If you still can't export the file to Word, let me know and we'll take it from there.
    Best,
    Sara

  • How can I copy part of a larger PDF file and create a smaller one?

How can I copy part of a larger PDF file and create a smaller one?

    Hi,
Copy the content of PDF file in Adobe Reader and paset it to MS Word then create PDF file from the Word file.
This may not work for all PDF files as some PDF files are not created correctly or some content cannot be copied.
Acrobat XI Pro has features to extract/delete/crop pages in PDF files and you can download it from www.adobe.com(Trial version- 30 days free). Or you can upgrade your subscription to Acrobat Plus and see more information at https://www.acrobat.com/acrobatplus/en/home.html

  • I want to save large pdf files from my computer to my iPad so I can view them in Adobe Reader.

I want to save large pdf files from my computer to my iPad so I can view them in Adobe Reader. I do not want to view them in iBooks or Quickoffice. Since I cannot email these large files, how can I get them on my iPad? Thanks for your help.

I think that Adobe reader supports file sharing.
Connect the iPad to your computer and launch iTunes. Select the iPad on the left side under "devices". Click on the Apps Tab in the window on the right. Scroll down to the File Sharing Apps list under the main apps list. Click on Adobe Reader. Drag the documents into the file sharing window on the right or select them using the "add" button.
Launch the Adobe reader app and the files should be in there.

  • How to Optimize/Correct Large PDF files

I have several large PDF files (>5000 pages) that were created with errors. I don't have the option of having them corrected. If I use a smaller file I can correct the errors using the Save As Optimized command using the default settings.  However, when I try this with a larger file, Acrobat runs for several minutes and becomes non responsive.  Is there another command or even Adobe product that would be more appropriate for accomplishing this?  Since I have a number of these files, a program that could be batched would be better.
    Thank you,
    Jeff
I am running Acrobat X Version 10.1.7 on Windows 7.

    Thank you for your response.
I should have explained better and we have continued to work on this.  The initial work was done on a machine without a lot of memory. After moving to a machine with more memory, Acrobat is able to handle some files.  But on one with 7700 pages it get a message "And error was encounted while processing images".  And when that dialog is closed another comes up saying "Insufficeint data for an image" and then the hourglass stays up. It seems like it runs out of memory.
In terms of what errors are in the file, what I do know is that Acrobat will put up the dialog saying "An error exists on this page. ... Contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem".
I have tried the Preflight. I have tried the compliance with the Acrobat 5 and it doesn't find any errors. Some errors are reported on PDF/  Is there a way to find out what causes the initial reported error.  There are a lot of individual repairs that can be made, but this seems to be too much trial and error.  That is why I used the Save As Optimized, which does seem to work on smaller files, but does fail on the larger ones.
    Thank you for any suggestions,
    Jeff

But generally it is never a good idea to send e-documents as email attachments.  Better use a file sharing service (Acrobat.com, Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, ..), upload the document, then send the shared download link via email.

  • Large PDF file (ebook) on ipod touch to read?

I have a large pdf file (7.0 mb, 445 pages) that I want to be able to read (without killing my eyes) on my overseas flight. I added the file via an app called file magnet. But it ran low on memory and crashed. Plus the text was very small.
I love the way ereader pro works but unsure if those books are in pdf format. Or if I can even add my own books?
Is this idea even possible for me to do?
    I would be
    a) willing to reformat the document if need be.
    b) pay for an app that would allow this.
    and/or both...
Thanks in advance for your help.

There are several iPhone/iPod Touch apps that can read PDF files. However, the ones I have found to not re-flow the text (if you find one, let use know).
While less than perfect, you can use the free desktop Stanza app
    <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/34623>
to convert a PDF to an ePub format which can be read via the free iPhone/iPod Touch Stanza app.
The iPhone/iPod Touch Stanza app can then change the font size, text color, background color, etc... And Stanza is a nice eBook reader.
The iPhone/iPod Touch Stanza app can download eBooks via several methods. From web sites that support Stanza (such as FictionWise, Project Gutenberg, etc..), from your own web server if you specify the link as stanza://path/to/ebook.epub, or you can enable the desktop Stanza -> Tools -> Enable Sharing, which will allow your iPhone/iPod Touch pull eBooks current displayed on the Stanza desktop into your the iPhone/iPod Touch Stanza app.
However, I will warn you that the PDF to ePub conversion leaves a lot to be desired, as a lot of formatting information is lost, but it is readable and you can most definitly change the font size and other font attributes.

    Hello waitingone,
please try this (all terms are translated from my German programs to my best knowledge):
    1. Did the creator of the pdf file enable the import options?
    2. See import options: choose an other visibility option for your layer.
    3. Let you show the import options and click into one with a black background and try these out (often a gray is selected).
    4. See trimming: try the different modes there. Often works: "Media".
    5. Is the pdf file (eg from Word) correctly created?
    6. Is the PDF file protected? >>> no import possible.
    7. If that does not help, store the pdf file in Acrobat, repair possible errors, run the PDF Optimizer before placing in InDesign.
    Good luck!

  • Using PDF files for items rather than .png.

    Hi there
We have been looking into improving iBook production. We have a few books that feature elements that are comprise of a background image with text over the top. As the text isn't in an iPad-friendly font (I.e. not in iOS) and it doesn't have to be searchable. Previously, the items have been produced individually either in Illustrator or Photoshop. The main 'problem' with this is the plethora of file it creates, and the huge amount to time taken to apply style changes across all the separate items, save, re-import into iBA, and re-apply all the iBA-specific attributes.
In an effort to speed up production somewhat, we have been trying to create these items in InDesign, using style sheets etc to give standardised appearance across all the items, and then drag and drop into iBA. The advantage is that all the separate items are in one document, and all style changes can be instantly applied to all items instantaneously, saving time, space, and effort.
It places them as PDFs, and after unzipping the .iba file, the PDFs look fine, with pin-sharp text (as you'd expect, as PDF text would be vector data. Similarly, when you zoom in to the items in iBA, the text is still pin-sharp.
However, once the iBA is previewed on a iPad, the text goes a little blurry. As one of the fonts is a dot-matrix-type font, the effect is noticeable - all the dots blur together into a line.
Does anyone have any idea as to what is happening to the PDF between iBA and the iPad? Does it rasterise it at some point?

    Hi Ken
'What leads me think it would?', well the fact that it worked, and looks ok. The iBook previews fine and works fine on the iPad.
We initially came up with the idea when we 'unzipped' an .iba file (you know, changing the .iba extension to .zip, then unarchiving the contents), and found that iBA itself had created .pdf files for the full-screen photos which appeared rotated and shadowed on the iPad page, but were viewed as straight, unshadowed, images. (the rotated version was the iBA-created PDF file, the full-screen was the original .jpg we pulled into iBA). Naturally, we were surprised. So we started mucking about, and found that drag/drop from ID worked, and looked OK.
As an update to my original post, it appears that the difference in quality was due to the fonts used. Once we opened the .PDFs within the .iba file, we converted the text to outlines, resaved the .pdfs, changed the unzipped folder back to an .iba file, and the font now looks great.
BTW, Is it me, or were you being snippy?

  • How do i extract pages from a large pdf file?

I have Windows XP, with Adobe Reader 9 and PDF version 1.4 (Acrobat 5.x) installed. I received a large pdf file (19,000KB) with 25 pages of architectural drawings. I want to extract just 8 pages from that document. Under the Documents Properties Tab, it states page extraction is allowed. How do i do this?
    Morgy1

I'm not an Acrobat user. But if you have a PDF print driver or if Acrobat 5 5 has a print PDF mode you can tell the PDF print driver to print the page number that you want and it should prompt you to save the individual page in PDF format. If you don't have a PDF print driver you can Google PDFCreate and got to its website and download it and install it.

  • How can I send a large pdf file (42MB) attachments by icloud ??

How can I send a large pdf file (42MB) attachment by email in Icloud ???

That's a bit excessive.  The website http://convert.neevia.com/pdfcompress/ can compress files up to 5 MB in size. You may want to print to PDF single smaller pages, or print the document and scan it one page at a time to PDF, and then use the PDF compress tools to shrink it further.

  • How can I reduce the size of a pdf file for emailing?

I want to send a pdf file which is 8 mb, it has bounced in an email because it is too big, how can I reduce the size of the pdf file for emailing?

Sometimes a simple "Save As" will reduce the file size slightly, but probably not enough to pass the <8 mb threshold of your recipient, as you need.
You've probably seen it, try the next option in the Save As menu, "Reduced Size PDF," and make it compatible with the latest version possible, again considering the recipient. This suggestion assumes Acrobat X. You don't say which version you're using, but this tool was available at least going back to Version 8, but in a different place, you'll have to hunt.
If all that doesn't work, you could remove some images from the source document, which also will reduce the overall size.
    Best luck.
