Large PSD file overwritten with a PDF file

Hi everyone,
I've been searching google for this for a while but I can't find an answer.
Ok, so I'm working with a large PSD (100+ layers, over 170MB). I wan't to preview it as a PDF. I click Save As ... and I make a new file on the desktop. I minimize Photoshop, go to desktop and open the PDF. Ok everything's ok. I go back to photoshop (just maximize it). I work work work .... Ctrl+S every once in a while ... and I suddenly realize that the file I'm working on has changed its name from project2.psd to project2.pdf (I see this in the top bar of the window). I minimize photoshop, go to the folder where my psd file is stored and I check it for weight -> it's now 24MB instead of 170MB. Ok, now I'm stressed and I go crazy. Istead of going back in history I decide to Overwrite my original project2 (which is now a pdf as the windows explorere shows ... [oh yeah, and the pdf I've created on the desktop is still there as a totally separate file]) with the project I have currently opened in photoshop (I still have layers in the layers pallete and everything, it's just the photoshop shows the name of the file in the top bar "project2.pdf"). I do that. Now I close all the projects opened in photoshop (I guess that's the moment I really screwed up) - though I don't close the program itself if that matters at all - and I reopen my project2.psd.
Yes, it opens as a PSD ..... but it's flatten. No layers.
God I'm so angry with myself now.
I have no idea why after creating a new pdf file on the desktop the whole project I was still working with turned into a PDF file.
Is there any home-made cheap solution to this? I wan't to get my 170MB 100+ layers file
Does Vista store some temp files anywhere? I suppose it won't be there.
Sorry for being so emotional about all this but I'm really screwed if I don't get my original file back.
PS. I've found a file called Photoshop Temp631890 in the Temp directory. Can't open it with PS. Is there anything I can do with it?
Thank you in advance,
Auror

Much thanks Ronald .... yes Robert you too.
Sorry to answer this topic with such a delay. I've been busy finishing this project. Not re-doing the whole thing thank God!
Ok so I know that if I overwrite a file it's lost.
I didn't loose everything 'couse I was able to recover an earlier copy that was erased. Some data-recovery software found it on my drive and was able to recover it. Moreover while I was recovering it I remembered that I've left a copy of my PSD file on my clients FTP server 2 days earlier. I did loose a couple of hours of work but all wasn't lost.
I could swear to god I saved my PSD "AS A" PDF and somehow both files turned into PDFs. Well ... s**t happens right?
gonna be more carefull next time.
Thakns for everything.

No, it is not set to overprint. Also, I have to add that the printing results were not consistent. Sometimes it covered and sometimes it did not.

  • Issue with opening .PDF files after recalling from Symantec Enterprise Vault

    Good Morning,
I am having issues with opening PDF files that have been recalled from Symantec Enterprise Vault and some of the files are anywhere from 3-4 years old.  Some files open, while others return the error: Adobe Reader could not open filename.pdf because it is not a supported file type or might have been damaged.  It is inconsistent as to which files it occurs with.  I am not ready to believe that I have that many corrupt files out there.  I am opening them on a Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 x64 desktop. Adobe 10.1.7. I have already configured the registry setting for bValidateBytesBeforeHeader that I found in another article to no avail.
The files are on a network share, but I also tried copying them to my local desktop and still received the error.
I have seen other posts regarding this error, but do not see a definitive solution and am hoping that in recent days someone has come up with a solution.
    Thank You
    Brian Dougherty

Not supported file type can (but not always) mean the PDF was created with an old enough version of Acrobat, that it isn't comaptible with reader X or XI.
Might have been damaged is pretty cut and dried in its meaning and interpretation.
There's a known issue with Mac OS and Safari Browser "breaking" PDFs as they download, but it's not so common for Windows. Since these are files you already had, it would be even less applicable.
You can try downloading an older version of Reader to check if it's a compatibility issue, but you'd have to uninstall the latest to do it and it'd be a lot of bother if they still don't open. It would also mean they are "broken" and cannot be repaired, that I know of.

  • Issue with opening PDF file link from Safari

    Hi Everyone,
I got a problem with opening PDF file link from Safari 4.04. Instead of getting a normal pdf content, it shows some weird characters. Not sure it is something wrong with Adobe Reader Plugin or Safari?
I have uploaded a screenshot of the issue in the adobe forum (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/531870). Please help!
    Many Thanks,
    John

There's nothing wrong, except the fact that you have Adobe Reader installed. You don't need it, so get rid of it; it will only cause problems with Safari. What you're seeing is the contents of the PDF file, rather than having it displayed.
If you want to download a PDF file, you can either Control-click on the link and choose "Download Linked File As…", or you can Option-click on the link for the file and it will be downloaded to your Download folder (usually your Desktop).
If you want to view a PDF file in Safari, you don't need Adobe Reader; Safari is perfectly capable of doing this by itself and has been for years. Adobe Reader will only get in the way and slow everything down.

  • I need help with a PDF file that is an image, the "Read Out Loud' option does not work, please help!

I need help with a PDF file that is an image, the "Read Out Loud' option does not work, please help!

You mean an image such as a scanned document?
If that is the case, the file doesn't contain any text for Reader Out Loud to read. In order to fix that, you would need an application such as Adobe Acrobat that does Optical Character Recognition to convert the images to actual text.
You can also try to export the file as a Word document or something else using ExportPDF which I believe offers OCR and is cheaper than Acrobat.

I'm not sure if you can do that with CreatePDF.  Try it; you got one free use when you sign up with Acrobat.com
If not, you will have to use Adobe Acrobat; there is a full-use 30 days trial.

  • Working with old PDF files - Release Clipping Masks

    Hi Everyone....Please Help Me!
I am regularly required to work with old pdf files for my company, which I have to open in Illustrator to amend and update (we don't have access to the original .ai files).
Whenever I start to work on these files I have to spend ages just unconnecting the elements of the artwork, usually by right clicking and choosing "release clipping mask"
Is there a way to just disconnect everything when you open up an old pdf document in Illustrator?
    Tá mo chroi bhríste
(it has my heart broken - in Irish!)

Always keeping a careful eye on the effects of released clipping masks, the process can be accelerated using the keyboard shortcuts rather than hunt-and-click.
    Open the PDF.
    Ctrl/Cmd+A (Select All)
Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Opt+7 (Object > Clipping Mask > Release) Hold down Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Opt and tap the 7 key repeatedly to initially release all top-level masks, then continue through the levels of nesting that may be present. With Show Bounding Box and Show Edges active it's easy to see when the releasing has stopped...usually only a few levels.
Deselect, then find one of the orphaned mask objects, which will have a fill and stroke of None. Select it, then choose Object > Select > Same > Fill & Stroke to select all the orphaned mask objects.
    Delete.

  • Problems with some PDF files

    Hi,
I have problems with some PDF files. After clicking on link to the file Safari shows me insted of normal document (which is working on Windows) hashes, numbers etc like it was a problem with coding or something. First I was using Preview, I though that maybe installing Acrobat Reader with plugins will solve the problem, but ofcourse it didn't. Did somebody has this same problem?

    Back up all data.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    defaults delete -app Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Quit Safari. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal. Test.
