Large slideshow, Ken Burns, allow black, etc. failure.

Hi all,
I'm trying to produce a large slideshow for a team year end celebration. It's about 1000 images and 30 minutes. I tried Aperture, but the processing time was taking forever (some posted days for a show shorter than mine). iMovie seems to be okay, but the I can't seem to figure out how to apply a generic Ken Burns, Allow Black to all the images. Ironically, Aperture looked great, but can't process, iMovie can process (I've a lot of history with traditional videos), but seemingly can't get the stills correct. . . .Any suggestions?
FWIW, I've a really old legacy system. Mac Pro 1,1. OS 10.7.5, still have iMovie and iDVD.
Thanks for the help!
Steve

.. why not using iPhoto?
I'm pretty sure, you do not 'edit' a thousands pics, set 1.5.sec each, add a generic transition, perhaps some 'motivational' music - done.
You can export the slideshow from within iPhoto as a 'mov', for further refinement (discs, sticks, mp4, whatever....)

just did it for my son's team - 2TB of video (1 season=1y, 6 cams, 22 games, 70min each) , shrunk to an 8min celebration
tons of slowmo, grading, ... stuff
speaking of music: this years selection: 'X Ambassadors/Welcome to the Jungle' .. the kids recognize it from the 'Before The Game/Beats' commercial... done in FCPX, not iMovie, for sure.
.. I started with a single photocam and 'slideshows' eight years ago too ....
welcome to the jungle ......

  • Slideshow -- Ken Burns effect

IPhoto slideshows not only has the ability to dissolve between photos, but includes the Ken Burns effect. While the ability to use transitions like dissolve in a slideshow is supported in Aperture, I have not found a way to float the photo to the left, right, down, up, etc. while being displayed. This effect really adds polish to a slide presentation, however, it is not supported in iDVD, DVD Studio Pro (at least version 2 which I have), and it appears it isn't supported in Aperture. Is it hidden somewhere in Aperture that I haven't found yet, and if not, why is iPhoto the only app that seems to have this feature? It seems weird that iPhoto would eclipse two professional-level apps (DVD Studio Pro and Aperture) with regards to a feature.
If anyone knows for sure, let me know!

Thanks for you reply. The reason for my reply above is that the discussion pages ask to add some remark to mark the thread as answered, so I just added that "no known answer". This was discussed with others in another topic, and yes you are correct, the discussion was on the very pro vs. amateur point you brought up.

  • Not happy with slideshows / Ken Burns effects / lesser quality in iDVD

I am a new iPhoto user, having created my first slideshow of old photos to play at my mother's 80th birthday party this week. The whole process of arranging photos, testing visual effects and adding music went swimmingly! BUT (!!!!) I am hugely disappointed now that I've rendered the show through iDVD.
-- The Ken Burns effects keep changing! Once a slideshow was created and the Burns effects seemed perfect, I sent that show to iDVD. But viewing the project once burned to DVD, I see that the cropping, zooming, etc. are all different. Is there a way to "save" a show and maintain the effects?
-- Moreover, the crystal clear image sharpness and clean edges seen when viewing a slideshow in iPhoto are "dumbed down" once the show is sent to and rendered in iDVD. Even at the "quality" setting, moving effects look raggedy-edged. This really makes me unhappy.
Any thoughts or ideas to share on this? Thanks.....

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. As TD pointed out, making a QT movie file of a slideshow involves rendering which is then encoded once again in iDVD. IMO, the best image quality for a slideshow is obtained when you create the slideshow entirely within iDVD. Of course there's no KB effect.
If you create the show in iMovie you can get around the double encoding by closing iMovie once the slideshow is finished. Then open the iMovie project file/package (Option-click on the project file and select Show Package Contents option), find the iDVD folder and drag the .mov file in it into the open iDVD window. This will let iDVD do the rendering of the various transitions and special effects and provide a better final product.
You must remember that iDVD's final resolution is only 640 x 480.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Help with iPhoto '08 - Slideshow & Ken Burns

I need help with creating a slideshow using Ken Burns effects. The basic problem is that some photos are getting cut off. I know I can modify each photo for start/end place, but each time I run the show, the effects are different (one run, slide 1 goes left to right, next run it zooms out, etc.), so I can't tell which photos need to be individually modified. The show is 100+ photos, so I'd rather not modify each one. I was at the Genius Bar yesterday and the guy told me the effect would be consistent once I made the slideshow, so that I could tell which ones to fix manually, but that's not the case. Please help!!
    Running: MacBook OS X 10.6.8, iPhoto 7.1.5
    Thanks!

You can adjust the start and end boxes. You can move them, and you can adjust the size by dragging the corners. However, the box will always be in the same shape as your aspect ratio, (e.g. 16:9 or 4:3)
To do this, click on the Gear icon in your photo to open the Inspector. Go to the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tab of the Inspector.

  • Aperture 3 Slideshow- Ken Burns

I want to create a second motion path within a single image when using the Ken Burns effect when using panoramas and high resolution landscape shots. As a work around I duplicated the image-no transition between the two images- Then I tried to make the second movement 'start' position match the previous 'finish' position. This comes close- but there is always a slight 'jump' since the tools are not precise enough. A question, is it possible to copy an image with the Ken Burns effect embedded/attached, duplicate it? Then specify a new finish point in the copy to give the second movement path? This would be great .---Or any other solutions, suggestions? Thanks

Can't do it. You're going to have to do it in Motion or After Effects then import the video clip. Aperture just isn't a motion graphics app, and I don't think anything in iLife will do it either. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

  • Toggling the slideshow "Ken Burns" effect

Numerous sources say it's impossible, but I did it somehow. I very vaguely remember coming accross something in some menu that let me switch the effect off, but I don't remember where it is. Has anyone else found this? I would like to know how to turn it back on if someday feel the need.

  • Ken Burns Effect window not there when I click on "Show Photo Settings"

    Hi
I am using IMovie HD v 6.0.3 on my mac book pro v 10.4.11. When I press "Show Photo Settings" in imovie, all I see is a large preview window with the photo panning and zooming. There is no window box with a small preview window, zoom, speed controls, and Ken Burns check box, etc. on the interface. So, as a result, the only control I have is a stop, and grab.
Where is my Ken Burns window with all the controls? Is there a download or a fix for this? What am I missing? I have a project loaded with photos and a deadline, so I figured if I used imovie instead of final cut pro, it would be much quicker and easier.
    Please help....
    Thanks,
    Anneita

Thanks for your reply! Your suggestion makes perfect sense.
However, just before I received your reply, I made an appointment with a Mac Genius at the local Apple store, and guess what! The transparent box was hiding way down the bottom of the screen, and that's why it couldn't be seen. He found it! Duhhhhh......
    Thanks again.

  • Dynamically resizing slideshow with ken burns needed

    Hi,
does anyone here know a free or commercial slideshow component for AS3 (must work with flex 3) which does the following:
    cross-fading,
ken burns zooming and panning with per image definition (eg. with xml file)
    scale-to-fill resizing of images
dynamically resizable frame size (so it can be used as a browser background)
It should work like on the following site
    http://www.timhupe.com/
My client wants this, but programming it from scratch will take rather long, so if anyone can help out here, that would be great.
    thanks

    Chris:
The export method you used creates a 640 x 480 QT file. If you use the Share->Send to iDVD menu option that will create a 720 x 540 QT file, save it in the Movies folder and automatically put it in iDVD. That should produce a higher image quality final product. If you have an iDVD project already started open it before starting the Share procedure so it will be the selected destination. In any case the larger QT movie will be saved to your Movies folder so you can include it manually is desired.

  • How come sometimes the Ken Burns effect allows you to edit the entire picture, and other times it automatically starts at a smaller section of the photo?

How come, in imovie, when adding the Ken Burns effect to a still photo, sometimes the phoo appears as the full size, and other times, the green and red ken burns boxes appear only on a smaller portion of the picture? I want to be able to Ken Burns a bigger chunk of a picture, but often times it is as if there is a pre-set for just how much the Ken Burns will cover.

Is it possible that the ones that have small boxes are in Portrait while the ones with large boxes are in Landscape?
If so, you can get bigger boxes on the Portrait ones by clicking "Allow Black" in iMovie 11. (iMovie 09 did not have this feature.)

  • Preview of Ken Burns Effect is a black screen!!

So, I am doing a movie for my parents, and I have 102 photos that I have loaded into IMovie. I loaded them in to the clips section, as I am not a huge fan of iPhoto personally. At first, no problems, but later, as I dragged photos into the playhead area, my photos wouldn't allow me to preview the Ken Burns Effect. I would drag them into the playhead, click on "Meda" button, and then select the Show Picture Settings button. The preview screen goes black as the effect scrolls through the process, disallowing me to see the preview. I have deleted the pictures from IMovie, re-inserted them, and started over (AAAARRRRRGGGGGG!), and it happened again.
Any Ideas? Thanks for the help!
Oh, and I have made no modifications to my machine (no new graphics card), and the pictures are all in .jpg format.

    Hi Tonyy13.
I am presenting the same problem. I can set the Ken Burns' effect while I am with the pictures before placing them in the Clip or Timeframe viewer. After placing them there, if I try to edit the picture (either by right clicking and choosing -edit picture or by control clicking and doing the same, I ended up with a black background. If you change the setting in this black ackground and update this changes they will be effective. So, you can change the slide duration, and everything in the sliders but without an image.
I was running System 10.3.9 and I thought this was the reason. Today, I went and bought Tiger but it didn't sove the problem. I do believe it is a bug in the program. According to Apple's Help and David Pogue's "The Missing Manual" this shouldn't happen.
If you solve this problem reply to this posting. If I did I will reply to your posting. Thank You.

  • Stopping the Fade to Black on Ken Burns Slide Show?

I am trying to make a slideshow using the Ken Burns template. I want to be able to make a loop-able file (.mov or other), so I can make a looping DVD. At the end of my sideshow, there is a one second fade to black - Is there any way to stop that fade out or is there another way to do this effect without the fade out?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Ken Burns reduces photo resolution in slideshows?

    Hey gang-
I'm running iPhoto 8 v7.0.1 on my new 24" 2.8GHz iMac. I've noticed something I hadn't detected in earlier versions of iPhoto- that is, when I'm playing a slideshow, photo quality if "Automatic Ken Burns" is enabled appears significantly lower than when Ken Burns is turned off. I've looked closely at a few photos that contain text and lines that can be pretty objectively judged, and photos definitely appear to be in a lower resolution and rather fuzzy if Ken Burns is enabled.
Turn Ken Burns off and play the same slideshow, and the photos appear sharp and crisp? Is this a known issue? Any way to adjust this? Thanks!
    Dave

I just added some text with Photoshop to a photo and ran it thru the auto KB effect slideshow and didn't see any degradation of the image/text. What size is your file? If it has small pixel dimensions then it might be fuzzy when used in the KB effect as it would be enlarged.

  • IPhone4 to ATV2 slideshow - How do I stop Ken Burns effect?

How can I turn off the Ken Burns effect during aiplay from an iPhone 4?
Using the iPhone4 (iOS 5) to play a photo slideshow on the AppleTV (just upated) and I don't seem to be able to turn off the "Ken Burns" effect on the iPhone. The pictures are too zoomed and you cannot see the faces. However, when I play the same slideshow on the iPhone4 the effect is not there.
So I am unsure if this an iPhone or AT2 issue, but I hope someone can help.
    Thanks

    Hi BobbyCo57,
Thanks for helping but that option is not there, just the transition options (Disolve etc).
This is what I can see from Photos, events, photo, play:
    Then when I enter "Transitions"
    Any other thoughts?

  • Kens Burns effects not saved in "original" saved slideshows in iphoto 11

i upgraded from iphoto 9 to iphoto 11. I have several saved slideshows. When I opened the saved slideshows in iphoto11 some of the Ken Burns effects were lost (some turned out to be Ken Burns effects on a landscape photos). I tried to add the Ken Burns effects to the landscape photo in the "original theme" and could not do so. The effect would operate until I closed iphoto11 and then would fail to operate when I reopened iphoto and ran the saved slideshow. This also occurred when I made a new saved slideshow. This issue only occurred in landscape photos and did not occur in portrait photos. The Ken Burns effects on a portait photo was updated when going from 9 to 11 and new Ken Burns effects could be added to a new and old saved slideshow.
Of the 12 Themes in saved slideshows only Ken Burns and Original have Ken Burns effects available. The Ken Burns effects are saved when Iphoto 11 is closed for both portrait and landscape photos in the Ken Burns theme and for portrait photos in the Original Theme. Landscape photos did not save in the "original theme"
I wondered if some how my library was corrupted so I went to a MAC store and made saved slideshows using their machine and their iphoto 11. I reproduced these results on an Apple store IMAC. Apple is aware

  • IPhoto slideshow export -- Ken Burns "jerkiness" on playback

Have an iPhoto slideshow of 25 pictures. On some, I used Ken Burns effect to zoom in, out, etc.
When I export, the result is a .mov file. Everything looks great when I play it on Quicktime, except for some of the photos on which I had used Ken Burns (meaning there's motion). The bad ones don't render properly, and are "jerky" for lack of a more technical word. They get stuck for a couple of seconds, jump forward, get stuck again, etc.
Amazing thing is that I did an export out of Quicktime using Sorenson3, and that seems to have smoothed everything out in a nice way. Result is a movie with no jerkiness, and everything works right.
    Two questions:
    1) Can I count on the Sorenson3 export method to fix the jerkiness for three other iPhoto slideshow-based movies I'll need to generate, or was this a one-time fluke that Sorenson3 fixed this movie? In other words, is there a principle behind the fix that makes sense and can be counted on?
    2) What caused the jerkiness in the first place? Is there something I can do so the original output from iPhoto on Ken Burns photos isn't jerky?
    Thanks for any insights.

the audio associated with that set of photos was a piece of music off of an audio CD that had been transferred to iTunes for the purpose of making this section in the DVD. It's not a big problem that the music didn't transfer, since I can add it back into FCX. Thank you so much for your concern and help. This was a very key bit of info that you provided me.
