Large spot in the middle of Macbook Pro display. What's wrong?

I have a Late 2008 Macbook Pro that has been working great. After transporting it in my bag one day, I took the computer out, started it up and noticed there was a large spot in the center of the screen that looked as if the glass and screen were stuck together or like a water spot behind the screen. There was no liquid in my bag though!
The spot has about a 2 inch diameter and is directly in front of the Apple on the back of the computer. All the pixels appear to work fine, it is just a cirlce about 2 inches big that is clearly noticable.
Any suggestions?

Hardware issues cannot be diagnosed by us volunteers.
Best to make an appointment with Genius Bar and ask about repair estimate. Be warned any repair will be replacemnt of the entire top shell, which will not be cheap.
You may end up just wanting to live with it and start saving for a new system.

Hairline-crack in Macbook Pro display-- what to do?

I have a MacBook Pro 13" that was bought in early February, and a few days ago I noticed a hairline crack (not a scratch) on the top left of my screen. it's met the centre left side of my display now. It's very thin and shallow, I initially thought it was actually a hair on my screen. Anyways, what's my best course of action? I've haven't taken my laptop around with me for a while, it's been sitting next to my bed for about a month, so nothing I can think of could have warranted the scratch except the cold weather that's been going through the country. I scared that the crack would get larger and ruin the integrity of my display (even more so), and eventually I would like to get it fixed.

Only if they determine it's a manufacturing defect. Your only shot here is if it's within the original 1 year warranty. Which by the way, you have to buy Applecare within if you want it. As a student, you get a discount on Applecare and it's definitely worth having even if it doesn't cover this.

How well does Aperture 2.0 run on the new 13" Macbook Pro?

I'm seriously considering buying a new mac in the next week or so. I was just wondering if any of you had any advice as to whether the new 13" Macbook Pro is good enough to run Apple's Aperture 2.0, quite well? I'm not worried about the screen size as I will mostly be working from home, but the mobility would be a huge advantage in the field.

The 13" MBP is relatively a lower end box for running a VERY hardware-hungry application. There are folks who consider strong Mac Pros marginal yet at the same time there are folks who find Macbooks even weaker than the 13" MBP "strong enough," so "quite well" unfortunately is in the eyes of the beholder. IMO IF one is aware of and accepts the limitations a 13" MBP certainly "works."
RAM fortunately can go to 8GB, a very big deal; however among Macs the 13" box has minimum-in-class graphics, no EC/34 slot forever preventing eSATA and/or SSD utility, and has a glossy-only display.
I'm not worried about the screen size as I will mostly be working from home, but the mobility would be a huge advantage in the field.
Working from home you will presumably be driving a secondary display, further taxing the weaker graphics of the 13" size.
Personally I don't find the ~1 pound saving over the 15" or the ~2 pound saving over the 17" to be "a huge advantage in the field." IMO for graphics, especially photos, the loss of screen real estate and pixels in the 13" size is a huge disadvantage in the field. The pound or two of weight IMO is much, much less relevant than the huge benefits of extra pixels and screen real estate in larger sizes.

Will the new retina Macbook Pros be able to to handle big logic sessions

I have been using an early 2008 Mac Pro (2 x 2.8 quad-core intel Xeon) which over the past year or two has had a long history of things going wrong with it. I am thinking that it's time to get a new computer and have been looking at the brand new Macbook Pros with retina (not that i need retina!).
I am a DJ and a musician and one of the reasons I would like a macbook pro is so I can use it to DJ with (serato) as well as incorporate it into my band (ableton). I know a Macbook pro will be able to hand these tasks well but I am wondering whether it will be able to replace my desktop as my main computer and handle large Logic sessions with plugins etc...
The last thing I want is for it to have over heating issues or not be able to handle what I throw at it. I would love a new Mac Pro but the portability of a macpro is apealing and I'm done DJ'ing with a huge CD wallet.
Here is what I am looking at:
2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz
16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage
Also am I correct in thinking that my 2008 early Mac Pro has more processing power than the new macbook I am looking at?
Would be great to hear whether this macbook pro will be able to do the job for me. I'm looking at it being my main computer for the next 5-6 years

You MUST be joking! LOL!
There will be NO COMPARISON as far as speed, processing power, etc.
You are looking at about a 40% performance boost on the CPU, alone, never mind the boost in RAM.
Coupled with the speed of the drives in the MBPro, you will also notice that your insanely complicated projects that typically take a few minutes to load, will actually load in mere seconds.

Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.

Using an LCD TV as the Macbook Pro display

I am trying to use a Samsung LCD Tv as the display monitor for my 15 in. Macbook Pro display. I have a DVI cord going from my laptop to a DVI-RGB adapter which is plugged into the LCD Tv monitor, but nothing shows up on the tv and the display is still on the laptop. Any suggestions?

Assuming your adapter is valid, you try "Detect Displays" in System Prefs/Displays. Some people adjust the OS to show a monitor icon in the menu bar, near the clock, and you can access this from there also. If the Mac still detects no external display, suspect the cabling.
I really question your DVI-RGB adapter, though. That would be highly unusual - are you sure it's not DVI-SVGA, or DVI-component? Do you have the brand and model? I have run my Samsung TV from my MBP just fine with a SVGA cable and DVI-SVGA adapter.

I tried reloading Aperture 2.1, but that did not change anything. I have also turned the system off, for a period of time, and then turning it back on, when I click on Aperture, it comes up and locks in the thumbnail mode. I can view my stored pictures, even modify them, but it still says thumbnails.
I got in this mode by trying to import "one jpeg photo", from a scanned slide using a Nikon Scan4 IS5000ED scanner. I had saved the scan to my desktop before I tried to import it.

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now. About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

I just bought a new MacBook Pro retina 15". After unboxing, I turned it on and there was no any problem. But the second time I turned it on and charge battery, I got 2 problems, 1. Important: Follow these instructions in order. Test the camera between steps to see if the issue is resolved.
Built-in iSight cameras
These steps are for iSight cameras that are built into a computer, such as the iMac G5 (iSight) or later, the MacBook, or MacBook Pro.
See if the issue is application-specific.
Try another application (iSight works with applications like iChat, PhotoBooth, and iMovie HD 6) to see if the iSight camera exhibits the same behavior in all applications. If it only happens in one application, try reinstalling that application.
See if the issue is user-specific.
Test your iSight camera in another user account. If the issue only occurs in one user, the issue would be isolated to user settings.
Find out if the computer recognizes the iSight
Check System Profiler (in the Utilities folder, inside the Applications folder). Under the USB header, check to see if the iSight camera is detected.
Reset SMC or PMU

Thanks for all your assistance. There is no need for apologies, Migration Assistant did indeed create a second account for the MacBook data. It has just taken me some time to figure out how to access it. I now have all the MB data in one account and the MBP files in another, which suits me fine. In fact, it is an advantage in my case as it keeps the private and business aspects separated.
I will however try the fatcatsoftware to transfer all the iPhoto files to my iMac, where I keep my main photo library. and it will be of help to keep the events, etc in the transfer. As far as iTunes is concerned, I have HomeSharing on all my computers and this has obviated the need to worry about playlists being transferred successfully. However, HomeSharing did not appear to share the iPhone/iPod apps that were stored on the MB and although these have now come across with the new MacBook account on the MBP, I was wondering whether my iPhone and iPod will be recognised by the MBP and sync with it? Will I need to have the MB account open to achieve this or will the MBP recognise and sync with the iPhone/iPod automatically irrespective of which account is open?
Thanks for the tip on deauthorising my iTunes account from the MB before sellng. This I will do and I believe the best way to remove all of my data from the hard drive is to reinstall the MacOSX operating system software. Is this the right approach to securely delete everything?

At a guess you have cable internet connection.. please confirm exactly what you have.. two public IPs are allowed by some ISP.. once you use up the two IPs, there are no more..
Make sure the TC is in router mode. And to get it working you probably need to shut off the cable modem.. if it has battery backup remove the battery.. try 5min off .. if not long enough try 20min off. then overnight. The ISP equipment must reset to allow a new MAC address to capture the IP.
If you cannot work it out.. plug in the old router again.. and set the TC to bridge mode.. which I suspect it is in now.. and plug it into the main router.. it should work fine like that.

To set up Mac OS X Mail to receive MobileMe mail:
If you’re using Mac OS X version 10.4.11 or later
Open System Preferences (under the Apple icon at the upper-left of your computer screen).
Click MobileMe (if you have Mac OS X version 10.5.3 or later), or .Mac (if using version 10.4.11 to 10.5.2), and enter your MobileMe member name and password.
Open Mac OS X Mail, choose Mail > Preferences, and then click Accounts.
