Large storage question regarding Itunes Library Management

HI
I am running Itunes 7.4 and have a 500gb drive physically attached via firewire 800. I currently have my itunes preferences set to copy files to the library when added. My question is. Can I only have itunes physically manage and store my music on the 500gb drive while keeping my video on another drive and have itunes just maintain a reference. In other words I want to have multiple physical either managed or referenced by the itunes library.
How are you all dealing with this as your video and music libraries continue to get larger and larger?
thanks
jim

Create a second iTunes Library. Quit itunes - hold down the option key when relaunching iTunes and follow the directions offered.

  • ITunes 10 and iTunes Library Manager 5.3

Is there any kind soul out there on a Mac who uses Doug's iTunes Library Manager 5.3 and has upgraded from iTunes 9 to iTunes 10? Does iTunes Library Manager 5.3 work with version 10?
I am NOT looking for people telling me to use iTunes' own multiple library feature; I already have a complex multi-library/multi-preference/multi-hard drive set up and will only update to iTunes 10 if it works with Doug's iTunes Library Manager 5.3 (or if Doug updates; no mention of iTunes 10 on his website).
I'd appreciate any feedback from anyone who's actually upgraded to iTunes 10 and is using iTunes Library Manager 5.3.
    Thanks in advance.

  • ITunes Library Manager X album art

I use iTunes Library Manager to manage 40 separate iTunes libraries (I have a LOT of music). I have secured album art for all of my music, some secured by iTunes itself, and some retrieved by me using Google Images and cut & paste. I only just noticed that an Album Art Work file has been created for each library, and each Album Art Work file contains all the album art for all the songs in all the libraries, so the same 2.3 Gig file exists 40 times on my computer. On my Mini, that takes up about 2/3 of the hard disk. Does anyone have any experience solving this problem?

OK, I'll try ... have you used AppZapper? It removes all traces of the application (but check in Spotlight just to be sure it's all gone) , so if you delete iTunes and reinstall it from your back-up disc, you should get back to normal. The other thing you can try is using OnyX to find any invisible files that might be causing the problem.
I'm sure you've thought of these things, but nothing else comes to mind.

  • ITunes Library management questions

My name is Lucas osmond i am having difficulty trying to figure out how to do something to iTunes. Here is some background I have been a radio disc jockey for 20+ years. I have a very large library of music 40,000+ albums. A lot of my albums information is not in the iTunes database, I have taged 18,000+ albums. I have created a playlist with all of these albums I would like to remove everything in my library except for this playlist. The playlist is the question is 129.7 GB. My first attempt was to back up the entire playlist to a 160 GB iPod. I did this and and Then I enabled disk mode of the iPod and copied the folder called music to my desktop. The hard drive on my mac is 500 GB which means once I copied it to the desktop I did not have enough room of the computer to import the tracks into a fresh iTunes library. Is there an easier way to do this process? I realize i have a special case and what I am trying to do is not normal. If nobody comes up with any ideas is there anyway for a customer to talk to a Apple developer or iTunes engineer?

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • Questions regarding itunes/ipod + found potential bug (itunes 7 + 5G ipod)

I'd love to be proven wrong here.. but...
Okay I've got an iPod 60GB video model (5G) and using itunes 7.0.2 on the imac and powerbook...
now... my main storage point for music is the imac (so I automatically sync the ipod to itunes on the imac) and I like to take the ipod and powerbook with me to friend's places or what not.
I found it stupid to have two identical libraries on two of my computers, so I got rid of my music collection on the powerbook (as all of it is on the imac). Now.. the dillema here, or dillemas I should add...
    a) before I used to use automatic sync, I ticked "manual manage music and videos" and thought life was peachy.. until I was at a friend's place, with my laptop, and wanted him to have a listen to a couple of tracks from the ipod, so I plugged it in, fired up itunes and it worked... however!
(BUG RANT) The view mode settings keep reverting back to it's default when ever I plug the ipod back in again! as in "Show Browse" or cmd-B, which I want kept there when I listen to music, having to press cmd-B every time I want to scroll through my list is very f**ng annoying.
Also having to change it to manual management of music every time. ***? (END BUG RANT)
    b) So I decided to try the automatic synchronising method, but when it is in automatically sync, I can't browse my music on my powerbook's itunes, and it keeps asking me to synchronise with the itunes library on the powerbook, which is blank!
Can't there either be a 3rd party app which is like itunes in the sense you can browse/listen to the music on the ipod, or a simple method of management/maintenance when plugging in ipods to other computers without it synchronising with their libraries (for listening purposes only of course)
So.. folks... Apple tech support gurus... WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS!??!?!?!?? :\

You are on the right track!
+--the entire iTunes folder found in My Music+
This contains the itunes library database files (iTunes Library.itl which has metadata on ratings, play counts) and all the itunes library content files (Artist/Album, movies, etc.)
The lyrics are inside each songs' file.
The Artwork should also be in this folder.
    +-User Name\Application Data\Apple Computer+
    +-User Name\Local Settings\Apple Computer+
These include the backups you need for the ipod and apps data.
You don't need to deauthorize if you are simply reinstalling itunes. You only need to deauthorize if you are reinstalling Windows itself.
+--Can I copy the iTunes folder from the external HDD and paste it back into the same location after I recover my laptop+
    Yes
+if the version of iTunes is slightly different (I have 10.1.0.54)?+
If the new version is at least 10.1.0.54
It won't work to go backwards to an older version such as v9.0

  • SSD storage good for iTunes library?

I think the hard part is done, 256GB of SSD storage can be had for £700 now, by net year (I'd say Q3~ish) we could have 500GB of SSD storage for maybe £900, then it will only be a year and a half or maybe two before we get 1TB of SSD sotrage, which I think will tip past £1K.
What I want to know is if an iTunes library would be good with SSD, I've read up on it and the technology works best with data which require small file access, not large quantities of data like video.

Well you see my current setup is that I do have a 1TB HDD, I stream this over a TimeCapsule network to iTunes on my MacBook. But I find that it can get itself into a bottle neck, especially so with video, music too. So I thought that SSD might help, I was told the 802.11n frequency allowed for good speeds and thought that the spinning HDD would be the main offender.
I saw this technology from Intel, a video demonstrating wireless streaming of several GBs in a few seconds, but it was restricted to a few meters. But as mentioned I didn't think that it was a network issue because 802.11n is fast.
    Your thoughts?

  • ITune fails to burn large audio books:The iTune library file cannot be saved. There is not enough memory.

    Hi,
I am trying to burn large audible audio book to virtual CD and iTune 11.2.2 keeps crashing midway. After spending hours trying to get information off technical forum, here is the description and possible explanation of what is happening:
The burn start normally, iTune  create 10 tracks of 8 mn per CD.
The burn progress pass 10 CD (up to 30 CD).
The a message box with: "The iTune library cannot be saved. There is not enough memory" appears.
In the back ground the process keeps going for another 2 or 3 CD then stops.
This is NOT a memory problem:
My computer still has over 100 Gb of HDD left
On my i7, only 4 of the 8 core were used.
The whole process didn't go over 3.5 Gb of RAM (out of 8).
    I reinstalled, iTune.
    I re-imported the files.
I raised the processes priority to High.
From the forums, This problem started past iTune 7.x and x64 bit processors whenever iTune used more that 1.5 Ghz of RAM.
It does follow the behavior of a 32bit bit system going Out Of Memory.
The way I see this: Apple has to either create a fix to reuse the current iTune memory properly or create an update to 64bit so it can use whatever RAM is available in the computer.
Does anyone else have any other idea?
For those who want to play lawyers, I am not American. In my country, it is legal to remove DRM off content that you legally own. The fact that Audible softwares were made by drunk monkeys is enough of a reason.

Well, I installed the latest iTunes this AM, works perfectly.  Although for some reason it did lock up after playing a song today.
Horror stories?  That's a bit overly dramatic.
    No, it isn't.
The issue you are experiencing is one that has occurred in multiple versions of iTunes, a simple search would have revealed this.
A simple search was conducted, no one seemed to have an answer.  Do you always adopt such a haughty attitude?  Or was I just lucky.

  • Random library storage after "upgrading" iTunes library

I recently upgraded my library and found that some of the upgraded songs were stored in proper location in the iTunes library whiles others were stored in the parent folder. Something must be forcing that selection because I even deleted the files from the library and reintalled them and they were again stored in the parent folder rather than the iTunes library. I haven't changed the preference location and most of the upgraded music was stored properly. Indeed, the random storage issue affected some songs in an upgraded album but not all.

Restore that backup you take regularly... Ah, OK.
    *Empty library after upgrade/crash*
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the *Previous iTunes Libraries* folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename *iTunes Library* as *iTunes Library (Empty)* and then rename the restored file as *iTunes Library*. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.

  • Stupid question: the iTunes Library

OK, dumb question. If I want to take my entire iTunes library and upload it to a private web server as an emergency backup of everything I own, is there any harm in taking my master iTunes Library folder from my Users/myusername/Music folder and putting it up on the server?
In the event of catastrophe, am I assured that everything related to my library -- obviously music but also artwork, etc. would safely be included there? And to restore it I could simply download it to a local drive and place it in the identical location?
(What I'm really asking is: iTunes isn't dependent upon any other prefs or data files stored elsewhere, is it?)

    hi david,
You'll want to copy the entire iTunes folder from your Music folder. iTunes is dependant on the data files that are in there, and yeah, should you have something go wrong with it just replace it with the backup and thats it.

  • ITunes library management software suggestions?

I've tried TuneUp but don't necessarily love it. Goal is to add missing lyrics, Artwork, fix artists names, etc.
Any other suggestions out there or is this the best one?

No computer program is perfect, I'll give you that. But I still think iTunes is the best one going, especially considering the price!
I think there's a market that Apple could tap into to have an iTunes Pro, costing around $50 that would have more robust library management tools, to solve the problem you're talking about, also allowing mutiple computers to more easily share and update the same library and stuff like that.
All that said, I think there are some workarounds that might help you:
    1) I'm not sure why you "re-import" your library each time iTunes loses the connection to the files. Isn't it faster just to close iTunes and re-open it. If iTunes sees the files are present at startup the ! will disapear.
    2) Someone on this forum recently suggested a good tip: create an automator action to automatically connect to your network drive when you open iTunes, so you don't have remeber to manually do that tedious step.
    Does any of that help?
    Sara.

  • Sync'd iPhone 5 two days ago, all fine.  Plugged in y-day to charge and phone attempted to auto sync...iTunes now says unable to sync bc I need an extra 27GB of storage to copy iTunes Library.  I have not made any changes to my settings.  Any ideas?

I sync'd iPhone 5 two days ago w/o any issued or problems.  Connected phone to iMac for a charge yesterday and iTunes stated an auto sync.  iTunes popup box appeared stating phone could not be sync'd b/c I needed an additional 27GB of storage, apparently to load iTunes Library.  I did not change or modify any settings.  Has anyone experienced this or know how to solve this syncing issue.
Side note: iTunes does recognize that my phone is plugged in, charging.   Thank you.

One additional finding this morning ... iTunes can't handle my iPad being connected.  Immediately upon recognizing the iPad, iTunes comes up with the same message as happens with the iPod indicating "iTunes has stopped working," forcing an immediate shut down of the program.  Opposite the case with my iPod, iTunes at least recognizes my iPad.
    No idea.  This is madening.

  • Storage Advice for iTunes Library

My LaCie 200G drive is almost full, I'm using it to hold my iTunes library. I placed a large number of rare live performance recordings on this drive and my collection is still growing. I'm looking for a drive in the 500G range to which I could move my current library and add new acquisitions, any suggestion?
    Thanks
    Brian

I would look for rebate deals on a large Seagate or Hitachi IDE/ATA hard drive, and stick it inside a third-party Firewire or USB enclosure like this one or this one. This should save you a bit of money over buying a pre-assembled external drive, and assembling it yourself only requires a screwdriver.

  • Time Capsule and Apple Tv Question regarding iTunes

(Sorry if this has been asked) I wanted to know if you could set up the time capsule as basically a centralized itunes server and connect to it from multiple apple tv's at the same time to stream music to different rooms( 3 rooms at most) if not will this work one stream at a time?

If you go into File, Preferences, and click ADVANCED, you will see a checkbox that says
Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library.
    You want to uncheck this.
If you have your library on an external drive, and you want to keep the files there, you uncheck that box and it wont copy the files to your hard drive, just link to them.
In my case, I had my iTunes library on my Macbook. I copied all 20g over to my Time Capsule by dragging the folder in it's entirety to the TC. Then on my Macbook pro i clicked the startup icon and held down OPTION. This asked if I cwanted to create a new library or open another. I chose open another, navigated to the Time Capsule, and it worked perfectly.
THere will of course now be syncing issues between my music. I use my Macbook as my purchase and portable library, so I will now have to either completely copy the directory once a day/week etc or i'll have to export any new songs/music i buy from iTunes to a disc and then import into the new library. Also wont keep my play lists in sync. But that's a smallish issue for ME.

  • A question about iTunes library access.

I just got a MacBook Air, having used iTunes for years on iPods, iPhones and an Ipod but originally on my WIndows PC which I still use as my main machine. inlcuding putting CDs onto iTunes. I have around 300 albums on there.
I cannot view my iTunes library on my Macbook although I have authorised it. I have unauthorised all 5 devices and authorised each one again, but still on my Macbook my iTunes library is empty apart from 4 tracks I bought directly on iTunes.
    Suggestions gratefully received!

The .exe files are the application files.  your Mac will have hte mac version.
    Look at this article.
Where are my iTunes files located? - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1391
Copy the whole folder, complete, to the equivalent location on the Mac (as also indicated in the article).  iTunes will then start up with your old library.

  • Previous itunes library question/ erased itunes library

i accidentally erased my i tunes library. now i have a previous itunes library icon in my...my music folder with all my old file names, and when i try to import the old files off a cd my library still recognized the songs i chose off that cd. is there any way to get those files back onto my library with the contents of that icon or any other way? please help!

    *Adding new items/removing orphans*
Try iTunes Folder Watch or iTunes Library Updater. Folder Watch is much faster on the adding files front, can be set to run in the background and includes a useful exclusion feature, however it’s really slow at removing orphans. iTLU is better for this although doing it manually after looking at a list of proposed removals generated by Folder Watch is probably faster still. iTLU can also be set to update iTunes when you've used 3rd party tools to change tag info.
