Large Temp File in hd:/private/var/.../Cleanup at Startup/ folder, bloating my backup

Everytime Retrospect runs my backup, this large file is there taking up space.  Over time, a months worth of these would be 4GB in size.  How can I stop these temp files?  What are they from?
Thank you,
Booney

Your welcome delbcj, sounds like a plan..
As an aside, I use CarbonCopyCloner for scripted incremental backups, and I found it speeded things up considerably if I excluded all cache folders on my system including Bridge's massive cache files and Safari's large cache.
In my case, both of those are modified every day and represent over 5Gs..
I use Cocktail's Finder mod of "show invisible files" to see- as Chris says-  the normally invisible Photoshop scratch file.

    Hi,
    I have Berkeley DB 5.2.28.
And I tried to use Berkeley DB on iOS 4.3.
    I wrote;
    printf (stderr, "db open - 1");
    ret = dbenv.open(strDBdir,
    DB_CREATE |
    DB_INIT_LOCK |
    DB_INIT_LOG |
    DB_INIT_MPOOL |
    DB_INIT_TXN |
    DB_THREAD |
    DB_RECOVER,
    S_IRUSR | S_IWUSR);
    printf (stderr, "db open - 2");
    I runned this app on iPod 4 (iOS 4.3), and then in xCode's Organizer found a message: "sandbox[363] <Notice>: myapp(362) deny file-read-metadata /private/var/tmp", between "db open - 1" and "db open - 2".
    How to resolve it?
    Please, help me.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
I assume you have correctly followed and built BDB 5.2.28 for Apple iOS by following the guide for Building Berkeley DB for UNIX/POSIX and the notes specific to Apple iOS (iPhone OS).
    The error message you reported:
sandbox[363] <Notice>: myapp(362) deny file-read-metadata /private/var/tmpis not an error from the BDB layer, but rather from the OS layer. It could point to insufficient privileges or rights (to write in that /private/var/tmp directory) or maybe a profile / access control list that is not configured correctly to allow the user you're running under to read metadata and data for a file; for example, make sure you have something like this in your sandbox profile:
    (allow file-write* file-read-data file-read-metadata
      (regex "^/path_to_BDB_environment__strDBdir")
      (regex "^(/private)?/var/tmp/")
(regex "^(/private)?/tmp/"))If this does not help then I suggest you post on the Apple discussion forums.

  • Large Temp Files in iTunes Directory

Hi, I'm noticing large temp files appearing in my iTunes directory. These are created almost every 1-2 minutes during iTunes play and they are 40,938k in size. Currently, I'm deleting them.
Has anyone seen this and does anyone know how to fix it? This is disturbing.
    Thank you for any assistance.

    Hi--
So what I've noticed is that ever 7 seconds or so, while iTunes is running, a new file is created in the directory and it's the same size as the E-N-T-I-R-E library. If you try to delete all the files while iTunes is running, it won't let you since it's using one or more of the files.
This isn't going to work much longer for me. I have a 40 gb hd on my Windows laptop and in the course of one day, my 96gb iTunes lib is creating enough files throughout the day to completely fill my hard drive which is only about half full.
Let's not even talk about how slow this is making the machine.
Any solutions? I don't have my iTunes directory in the defaulted location... is this contributing somehow to the problem?
    Any help appreciated.

  • Accidentally deleted /private/var/folders

    Hi folks,
yesterday I did something really stupid, I deleted recursively /private/var/folders
But I was able to restore it from backup like follows:
+ mounted external drive (Backup with SuperDuper! on it)
+ created a tar ball from <backup>/private/var/folders (as root)
+ extracted tar ball in /private/var/ (as root)
    Now my questions...
    What is /private/var/folders used for?
Because my backup was maybe two month old, any suggestions on the possible gap and changed data?
Any chance that I lost some important data/metadata?
Any useful help is highly appreciated.
    Kind regards
    Jens

There should be a set of folders inside the /private/var/folders with cryptic names such as 90, LB, zz and so on. Each of the cryptically named folders has a sub-folder that begins with the same two characters, and continues with something even more cryptic, for instance
    /private/var/folders/90/90gu9daQFSitP4FD2179ck+TI
And inside that folder are sub-folders for caches and two temp folders: a -Tmp- folder and a TemporaryItems folder. These ought to be empty when you first startup your computer. Many programs use them for storing stuff as they are working. The -Caches- folder has a similar function, except the data stays there thru a restart. If those files are removed no harm done, although some things may be a little slower until the cache for it is rebuilt.
The problem that can happen is that the ownership and group of each of the really cryptically named folders (shown above) and the three sub-folders must be correct or you will run into some VERY strange problems with some programs that use those folders. In the case above, that is my main user's temporary and cache folder home. There will also be a folder for each user on the computer, and the others will belong to the system and to other "users" such as a proxy server, the Guest account, the printer demon (anyway I think that's what _lp is) and so on. The two-character parent folders (90 in the above example) should all be owned by system, group wheel. It's their sub-folders which must have owner and group correct.

  • /private/var/audit using up a lot of disk

    Hello,
Can anyone inform me as to the importance of the files in the /private/var/audit directory? On my system it is using ~20GB of space on my hard disk. Many of the files are appended with "not_terminated".
    Can I safely delete these?
    Thanks!

I think so. But they may come back.
Check the dates - see if they are current.
I have nothing in the var/audit directory.
Somehow you have turned on auditing or some program/app has done so.
Check the Activity Monitor and console logs for the reason for the auditing.
Also man audit and the related functions for more information.

  • Mysql-5.5.30-6 : temp files issue

since I upgraded mysql, I beginning to encounter suddenly this kind of error on any sql statement after some times :
    mysql> show fields from jos_banner;
    ERROR 1 (HY000): Can't create/write to file '/tmp/#sql_25e6_0.MYI' (Errcode: 2)
I find that restarting mysqld is sufficient without actually changing any configuration files, but the problem shows up again the next day.
After some research, I find out that "PrivateTmp=true" in /usr/lib/systemd/system/mysqld.service is the guilty :
mysqld creates temp files in a private namespace (ie : /tmp/systemd-private-6DfdVO). The errors happen because the directory no more exists.
I can't figure who removes these directories, is it a systemd configuration issue ?

Did the file come from a Mac user? If the fonts are Mac-format TT, T1 or .dfont you cannot use them even if they are available in the Document fonts folder (presuming there is one), nor will Windows T1 fonts work from that folder, though they could be installed.
Bottom line is you need Windows compatible fonts, either OpenType, Windows TrueType, or (if you are willing to install them) Windows Type 1. If those are not available already on your system, or in a document fonts folder supplied with the file, you need to get them.

  • Large log files

I had a bit of a panic a few days ago when my available hard drive space went below 700MB. Last I had looked it was around 10GB. So I spent the last few days clearing out old applications and files that I don't need and have made some progress, but not enough.
I downloaded OmniDiskSweeper to help and found that my private/var/log space is pretty bloated: private is at 31.5GB. Within private/var/log the two biggest items are the 'asl' folder and 'system.log.1'
I went into Console to look up system.log.1 and found 7.6 gigs of the following lines repeating:
    Feb 28 09:55:33 Dwend-MacBookPro [0x0-0x3af3af].com.apple.Safari[3499]: * set a breakpoint in mallocerrorbreak to debug
    Feb 28 09:55:33 Dwend-MacBookPro [0x0-0x3af3af].com.apple.Safari[3499]: Safari(3499,0xb0baa000) malloc: * error for object 0x2238c4f4: Non-aligned pointer being freed
Can I just delete this log? I thought about reinstalling Safari just to make sure this won't happen again, but it looks like a one time thing on Feb 28, so maybe that's not necessary? Help!??

Any idea what causes this and how to prevent it from recurring? I deleted over 200 GB of logs yesterday after running completely out of space.
These boards were very helpful in identifying the problem, so thanks!

  • How to break up a large .java file into several?

    Hi,
I have a pretty large .java file containing many private methods. I rather not have to always work in this very large file. Is there a way to separate this into several smaller files, but to maintain the same relationship of all these private methods being part of the same class?
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

I thought that would be the answer. This is my first
Java app. It uses Swing and I use NetBeans as my
    IDE.
I knew it was getting too large, but I was trying to
avoid having to reimplement the whole thing. I have a
few more features to add and I can see this file
growing by another 300-400 lines. You'll find it a lot simpler to write the second time round. You really don't want to have classes that big
I do in fact have a couple other .java files where I
created separate classes. Its just that I really need
to rethink or redesign this whole thing. You do. Sounds like you've got one class that does too many things. What does this big class do? Adding new features shouldn't bloat your code this way

  • So many Temp files in iTunes library

We have three Mac computers used for different media purposes, one video editing, another sound recording and mixing, a third for research and editing - I have tried to rationalise our sound library by creating what I hoped would and could be a central library on a server ethernet drive but for some reason or other, iTunes is creating loads of quite large Temp files in the first folder on this drive, currently I have 31 such files, varying in size from 10 to 14 mbs.
Can anyone explain why iTunes is doing this and whether it will or I should get rid of them sometime?

External iTunes libraries of age and great size create many temp files to keep hold of changes and renaming of songs

  • Windows\temp files to delete

May I delete any old .tmp .ctm .rpt or .rptconMgrCache file from the windows\temp directory ???  Or do you know where there is documenation concerning this?  My windows\temp file is growing out of control and the folder needs to be manually cleaned up.  Thanks
    Dan

a typical solution would be to create a windows bat file to delete files in that directory and to schedule it with windows task manager to run after hours. Usually if a file is being used it shouldn't be deletable (locked by the OS). I don't see any reasons not to deete them.

  • A large file called "sleepimage" under /private/var/vm/

    I have a 2GB file called "sleepimage" under /private/var/vm/
does anyone know what it is?/ How to delete it?/Should I delete it?
Looking for a master/genius/Einstein to solve my question

As has already been said, it saves the entire contents of your RAM to the hard drive so that if the power goes out you don't lose your work. You can change your default sleep settings so that safe sleep is off using Terminal, but it's generally not a good idea. It will prevent that sleep image from being created so you can delete it and recover some space on your hard drive, but if your laptop loses power during sleep nothing will be saved and it will just shut off (like yanking the power cord out on a desktop).
If you're pretty confident you're never going to let your battery get to down to 0% and would rather have that extra space, open Terminal and type "sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0" (without the quotes) and hit enter. Then you can delete the file and empty the trash. If you want to change it back, it's the same command, but replace 0 with 3.

    Hi all,
I am running ancient OS 10.5.8 on my ancient MacBook.   I noticed some rather large log files in private/var/log/asl eating up HDD space, and wanted to delete them, but I scanned through them first to see if I could get an idea of what was going on.

This happened over and over again.  Anyone have any idea what is going on here?  iTunes is 10.6 if that matters.

I think the following will do the trick for you (from http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10329979-263.html?tag=mfiredir):
Fix: Restart log managers after removing asl data
Open the Terminal application and enter the following two commands to stop the log managers:
    sudo launchctl stop com.apple.syslogd
    sudo launchctl stop com.apple.aslmanager
Then create a folder on your desktop called "temp" (to store the moved "data store" files), and enter the following command in the Terminal to move the "ASL" data to the new temporary folder:
    sudo mv /var/log/asl/* ~/Desktop/temp/
Finally, restart the "syslogd" process with the following command (the aslmanager will be started when needed by syslogd, so it doesnt need to be manually restarted):
    sudo launchctl start com.apple.syslogd

  • Star Up Disk "full" problems...Which private/var files can I delete?

I have been having issues with my start up disk being full.
To the point where I could not copy to my clipboard as I had ZERO space left, programmes were shutting down etc.
I couldn't even delete the few pics I had as I couldn't open my Kodak software.
I have uploaded the photos now and deleted them, I have copied all the files I can to sticks, there is basically nothing I have added on the computer, yet I still have only under 700 MB of space on my HD.
I have downloaded and run Omni Disk...it is telling me I have 130GB of "private/var" files.
I know I cannot just go around deleting things, so need to know what I can and cant delete if possible?
I really need to sort this problem out!
I also need to know how to fix this problem from happening again - is this a log problem or what exactly?
Thanks for your help in advance!

    Hi, Limeslice
just to make sure that there is not a dum mistake: did you empty the trash?.
    Other:
Disk space consumers are typically large photo libraries, music and video files.
back them up, then delete them, and don't forget to empty the trash.
    To find large directories :
open Terminal (under applications/utilities), then type "du -d 1 -h" (without quotation marks). this gives a list. for example, it says " 25G ./Pictures", it means that the Picture directory has 25 GB. you can then refine and ask for deeper levels, by typing "du -d 2 -h" or "du -d 3 -h".
Try to find out in this way. if this doesn't give you the correct hint, please, report back, there might be more complex problems.
    Success, Thomas

  • Hello the private/var file on my 2008 iMac (OSX10.5.8) shows a whopping 65GB. Can that be normal? Can any of it be deleted?

Trying to clear up disk space on iMac and discovered the "private/var" file is 65GB! Can this be right? Any way to delete any of this safely? Does this store systems logs, virtual memory? I'm no expert. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
I used Disk Inventory X app to make this discovery.

Whatever you do stay out of system folders lest you completely corrupt OS X. There is nothing in those folders you need have anything to do with.
If you need to delete files to clear up space, stick to your Home folder (except the Library folder.)
