Large Timecode Window Trick

Hi,
One of the things I miss from Avid in fcpx is the nice big scalable timecode window. This is quite essential when you work in a team where more people need to be able to see the timecode. As far as I know the only solution in fcpx is to add the timecode plugin on your clips and scale that up.
I stumbled upon an Apple app called "Pixie" from the "Graphics Tools for Xcode" which is found on Apples developer site. This app can enlarge a part of your screen and display it in an always on top window.
Just start the app, go to settings and turn off "Enable Development Mode" to get rid of the overlays, scale your window to your size and choose zoom level.
By default it follows the mouse, so just aim at the timecode and lock the axis with CMD+X and CMD+Y. If it gets in the way, just select it and CMD+H to hide it. Or just move it...
The numbers is quite low res from the scaling, but it is probably better on a Retina.
Not a perfect solution, but a good tip I think!

Why file names? TC is all you need. Make sure you burn ONE DVD per tape...name that DVD the tape name and then keeping track of footage will be easier.

Possible with larger timecode window with new FxPlug 3 functions?

Hi,
One of the things I miss in fcpx is a larger timecode window. This is a must when working in pair with a reporter. The small standard timecode display is just too small and too hard to read from a distance.
The new FxPlug 3 functions "allows developers to create custom interfaces for their plugins inside of Final Cut."
So does anyone have an idea if it is possible to make a larger timecode window that displays the source timecode?

The compression I gave you was h.264. A nice small web version that plays nice and looks good.
Not sure what compression at the size you were talking about would actually get you to 2 gigs.
I'd send him that... or ask for a more specific call on what he gets from the TV work. I suggest he open one of those files in QUICKTIME and hit COMMAND-I (EYE) to get the information. Have him post or send you a screen grab like this:

In Address book print window opened too large for window. Unable to close

Using Address book, trying to print lables for a group, print window opened to large for window.... cannot cancel or close out.

In general, in any window presented which calls for user action, if a button is highlighted (usually in blue if the OS is in charge) then pressing Return or Enter will do the same as clicking that button.
Most of the time the highlighted button is the one which is most usable - the "Print" button in that dialog window, for example, or the "Save" button in a Save dialog window.
The keystroke Command-. (Command-periodkey) will usually invoke a "Cancel" button if such is present in a window.

Is it not possible to paste values into the timecode window in FCPX?

I am doing a lot of manual time timecode entering - from someone wo has handed me a paper edit (in the form of an XL spreadsheet)
Has anyone had any success pasting a value into the timecode window? I can't seem to paste even itf I click it first and it turns blue. I can type it in, but I need to copy and paste values. There's a lot of them.

FCP 7.0.3 Timecode window burn

I cant seem to do a timecode window burn

In your project, make a new sequence (empty) sequence with the same settings as the finished sequence you want the timecode burn for.
Once you create the new sequence, return to your finished sequence. Remove any In or Out points. Now open the new, empty timeline you created. Drag the icon of your finished sequence from the FCP browser to the new (empty) timeline.
Your Finished sequence will appear in the new sequence as a nested track.
Now go to Effects Tab > Video Filters > Video > Timecode Reader.
Apply the Timecode Reader filter to the nested clip on your timeline.
If you want to make adjustments to the Timecode Reader filter, control-click on the nested clip and select Open from the drop-down menu. Once it is open in the viewer, click on the Filters tab to make adjustments. If you double click on the nested clip, it will open your original timeline.

Any timecode window plug-ins for older versions of FCE?

Hey - thanks in advance for any help on this.
I use FCE version 1 on a G4 running OSX 2.9. The most commonly recommended Free timecode plugin doesn't seem to work in my version. I install it, but it's not visible in the bins where it's supposed to show up. I tried saving it as a unix and/or unicode and all that other gobbly gook that you're supposed to try if it doesn't install properly. Anyhow, none of that helped. I can only assume it's because of my earlier version of FCE or my OSX.
I need a timecode window visible on my finished project because I'm sending to a closed captioning place. Thanks again.

Change timecode window source in CC

Hi everyone,
I swear in CS6 I used to be able to switch the source that the dedicated timecode window was looking at using the little window menu toggle (ie. from program source to each video track). I can't for the life of me work out how to do this in Premiere CC now! Am I missing something really obvious? Currently when I open the Timecode window (Menu>Window>Timecode) it displays the timeline program timecode. I want to instead see the source timecode of the video sitting on a particular track instead. (Yes, I know I can drop a Timecode filter on it but for this purpose I'm trying to sync up lots of little clips so I'm already using the filter on my top layer - I just need to know what the bottom layer is reading).

Thanks for the reply. I could have sworn I had the option to select it in a previous PrPro - and the only other Premiere I've used in recent years is CS6, so I assumed that was it. The odd thing is the help file makes mention of the option to switch the timecode source:

You can view timecode in the Timecode panel. To view the Timecode panel, choose Window > Timecode.
You can view the following in the Timecode panel:
If you have the Source panel selected, the Timecode panel will display source timecode.
If you have the Timeline panel, or the Program panel selected, you can choose to display sequence timecode, or source timecode from the panel menu. You can choose which audio or video track’s timecode to display from the panel menu, as well.

"New USB device detected" - large black window comes up & at the bottom it says "hold alt to remember the choice". How do I reset?

"New USB device detected" - large black window comes up when I plug an external HD or NetTalk device. At the bottom it says "hold alt to remember the choice". Im running Parallels 6.0, so give me the option to choose. I held alt and chose Mac. Now I want to choose Windows 7 - BootCamp, but Can't. How do I reset my choice, so it always asks me?

Timecode window burn with filename?

I need to make a timecode window DVD of about 5 hours of raw clips for a client.
Is there anyway to automate burning in the clip filename onscreen along with the timecode window?

My site renders too large on Windows 7/Windows XP in both IE and Chrome. How can I fix this?

The site is "zoomed in" when viewed in these browsers - looks larger in view, and doesn't fit in the browser window. Adds scroll bars to the side and right. It's fine across Mac browsers. Very frustrating, as I am job hunting and most recruiters are on PCs!!!!!!

Hi - thanks for responding! I got the heads-up on the problem from a recruiter, and I can replicate it myself when I check the site in Browser Stacks. I've looked at Windows XP and Windows 7, both IE and Chrome. It looks the same way all over those platforms. So I don't think it's about the varying monitor resolutions. I also think it's a new problem, because I looked at it myself on several friends' PCs back in July when I last updated it before now, and didn't see this issue.

I just installed the latest version of Muse and resaved the site, reposted it. I have also tried publishing it to the Business Catalyst beta site and previewing that in Browser Stacks - same problem.
I am on Mac OS 10.9.1.

Screen flicker when resizing certain windows larger ( browser window or services.msc window)

Hello, I have a H535 Desktop running Windows 7 with a A10-5600 processor with HD7660D graphics. When I make the Window larger by pulling it diagonally to the right and down or (in particular, the browser or services.msc windows) I get a black line or band that flickers or redraws the right and left sides.
I noticed that this happens in Aero mode or using any of the Aero themes, and it doesn't matter if transparency is on or off. BUT, if I change to the Basic Theme or Classic theme no black flickering occurs.
Now I checked my graphics card driver and it's updated with the most recent Lenovo AMD driver. Even when trying to update the driver, it says that I have the latest driver installed. Also tried uninstalling some drivers and letting MS reinstall them. No Dice.
Is this a MS issue? Do any of you have the same issue when you make the Services.msc window larger by pulling diagonally to the right and down and the same time?

Small window near timecode window

I got this small rectangular window ("move" with area to type in timecode). Any idea what this is? Locked up my program.

Never mind. When all else fails, read the manual. Found out what the window is for. Select object and type in where to move it .

Mac seems to print larger than Windows!

Im still fairly new to a Mac having been a Windows PC user for years. I certainly like what I've seen so far. Reasonably competent with Photoshop CS3 and have loaded Mac version.
I have 24" iMac with latest Leopard.
Main printer is Epson R2400 but also use Canon Pixma iP8500 and both worked fine with PC.
I had a number of CS3 files set up in a folder on my Windows PC and copied these on to my Mac. Some involve an image of 7.5" x 5.5" centred (on A4 canvas) and then framed by a thin 1px border of 10" x 8". These are for a particular task I perform and they need to be like that. Also have a lot of straightforward images in folders where I resize them to say 12" x 10" and then print out.
All seem to print out larger than I'm telling them to do. For example, the images with the 1px border of 10" x 8" print out about 0.25" bigger. This isn't a huge problem with the other images but the 1px bordered ones need to be exactly the size I specify (apart from it frustrating me that it won't do what I ask!). What I'm doing is to reduce the scale to about 98% and then it comes out near enough to what I want.
Anyone have any tips?

Neil - I agree - all things being equal, the prints should be identical but can I achieve that? No! Sometimes I can, other times I can't and I think it comes down to my not understanding yet how the Mac settings work. There is an Apple Store locally but it is a couple of hours driving as a round trip and I can't get there for a few days. They won't deal with phone queries.
Jean - you ask if I'm printing borderless. I've tried this but there's another problem. Sometimes when I try this the printer icon in the Dock bounces around and won't let me print, other times it's OK but still prints bigger than it should. On yet more occasions I get an image centred and of the right size.
I'm sure I'm doing something wrong that's obvious to someone else, and it's nothing to do with the hardware. A few days ago I had a full head of hair but that's no longer the case.
Sorry to put you to the trouble but can either of you tell me what settings you use for centred A4 printing? In a previous post I was advised to go into page settings and set all the margins to 0.56 ins. This seemed to work for a while but what do you use? Also what do you enter in Presets in the Print Dialogue box? Is the "Last Used Settings" the one to use or something else (I've tried various settings in this box). Presumably "Last Used Settings" does what it says on the tin - problem is, I don't know the settings to use in the first place!

App size not (too large within window) correct can...

When the app loads for me the contents inside are bigger than the window itself. This means I can't see the IM bit at the bottom of conversations and options page and things like that.
Anyone know how to reset the setting on the app i have tried uninstalling and re-installing. Basically as soon as it loads you can see the central loading icon jump to what it must think is center of my display but its not resulting in large portions of the app not being visible.

Can you click on the 'Restore Window' button and manually resize the LR window.
If that doesn't work try resetting your LR Preference file:

Windows Trick: Executable Class Files

This is in "new to java" for a reason.
I dont want to be flamed for posting something obvious, lol.
Its just a simple trick to fire up programs by double
clicking a class file. This is for minor cases that dont warrant an
executable JAR.
I was never able to get this working before but i stumbled on this
tech tip that made it all possible:

HOW TO:
Create a new text file with the following contents:
@title %~n1
cd "%~dp1"
java -cp . %~n1
Alternately, if you dont want to see the command window at all (like
with javaw) use this text INSTEAD:
start "%~n1" /D"%~dp1" javaw -cp . %~n1
Save this file as "javalauncher.bat" (it has to have a .bat extension).
Save it into a reliable folder. The java folder is a good place
for this. On my computer that is: C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0
FINALLY:
(1) Open Windows Explorer (or "My Computer")
(2) Go to Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types
(3) Find the CLASS extension (or create it by hitting the "New" button)
(4) Select it and hit "Advanced"
(5) Select "open" action and hit "Edit" or create a new action
Action: open
Application Used To Perform Action: C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0\javalauncher.bat "%1"
Explanation:
The action variable %1 returns a full path. Passing this to java
with "java %1" doesnt work so I gave up on this a long time ago.
Unfortunately the batch file file path manipulation trick doesnt work
in the action window "java %~f1" so a batch file is necessary.
Also anyone trying to condense these lines:
cd "%~dp1" java -cp . %~n1 into this:
java -cp "%~dp1" %~n1 ... that will NOT work
if you are in a folder with spaces in the path.
For some reason java doesnt recognize quoted
paths that end in a path separator:
java -cp "C:\a space\" Program <--- fails
Why not a simple exe? With this method you can pop into the java
launcher bat file and make little tweaks if you ever have to.
Plus a SINGLE line of text is better then opening up MSVC++
creating an entire project, compiling etc etc.
Why not a JAR? This is just for the simple programs beginners would
write (an intermediate step between the command line and an IDE!).
Why else is this a good idea? Beginners learn the basics of BAT files
and what they can do. This technique is extensible to a Compile and
Jar Me Up! action.
Also, you can create actions involving Java programs called from a
bat for more complicated things. For example: right click on a .JAVA file
and it will write the manifest file and jar up every java file in the folder.
Also, why not. It takes 2 minutes?

until recently, I had a .bat file successfully executing one of my class files.
Something changed, and not I get this error.
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: BatchStandaloneso my basic question is, what all would I need to have on the CLASSPATH or PATH again to have this work? I am thinking that's what got disrupted.
Because now it doesn't work, and I seem to believe I inadvertently changed that. I may have added a jar file to my commons/lib dir in Tomcat, but that shouldn't have altered it so drastically.
