Large Word document won't let me work

I have a very large Word document (322.5 MB) that I need to work on. I think it has a number of pictures or other graphic items in it. I can open it but then Word doesn't respond. It doesn't say the program is not responding, but I can't do anything, even remove the pictures or break up the document into several smaller ones. Any ideas?

  • Acrobat 9 Pro: Importing large Word-Documents

    Hello together!
I have a big problem with my doctorate thesis. I would like to import a large Word-Document (2.28 MB, about 300 pages) into Acrobat 9 Pro. That doesn't work at all. I can't beleave it. Is Adobe even worse than Microsoft?????!!!!!!!!
It starts to import, but at the point of 7% everything is finish. I tried everything, but I can't import that document. Does anyone have a good idea? That would be really great...
    Thank you very much!!
    Chris

If it is changing the indices, then you likely have printing metrics turned on (they are off by default in WORD 2007 and on in previous versions). If you want to change the printing metrics, you will have to search through a whole list of choices in the options for WORD. I the meantime, select the Adobe PDF printer and then use ctrl-A, F9 to update your pages and layout (I assume you are using styles and such). The print out should then be correct. The disadvantage is that you would have no bookmarks unless you add them manually in Acrobat.
When you have problems with PDF Maker, open the preferences and start turning off every things (you might want to write down the settings first so that you new what you started with). Then add things in until the PDF creation is broken. Then you know what the major cluprit likely is in the failure to create a PDF.

  • Large Word document imported into Pages with "Section Break Problems"

    Hi there,
I am importing a large Word document with many photos (>250 pages) into Pages. Now, the problem is that when using the "page thumbnail" window to the left it marks all my windows with a yellow border.
This means that I can't duplicate single pages - it will duplicate the whole stuff. Same thing for delete.
I can go to the last character of each page and insert a "section break". This creates single pages. But it seems a bit odd to me, and with >250 pages, this is quite some work too.
Any idea what I can do to solve quickly the issue?
    Thanks for any hints!

Sections are what they say they are natural breaks in the document.
Each section usually having headers footers and other basic content in common.
Effectively just like chapters in a book or specifically designed pages in a magazine or report.
If your text naturally flows from one page to the next then they should stick together.
If on the other hand you are treating them all like single leaves of paper to be shuffled around, then you need a section break at the end of each page.
3 ways you can quickly do this:
    1. There is a unique start to each page such as a return followed by a particular word. You can search on this combination replacing it with a section break followed by the word.
    2. You can make a short cut to do this from the keyboard
    3. You can copy a section break and paste it at the end of each preceding page.
    4. You can transfer by copying and pasting the content into a Layout mode document where every page is its own section.
As with most work, planning, organisation and thinking before you leap, pays off in the long run.

  • Importing text from large Word document ID freeze

I'm converting a large Word document to PDF via InDesign and when I import the text from the Word doc, ID always freezes.
I want to preserve the styles and formatting in the text but unfortunately the freeze occurs at the beginning where the Placing Microsoft Office Word 2007 document progress bar shows either "Processing character attributes..." or "Processing table attributes..."
My problem is that it is such a large document with lots of italics, bolds and styles that I would like to take over to InDesign in order to speed up the design process.

RTF will be fine and will retain all the Bold and Italic and other styles. RTF stands for RICH TEXT FORMAT and I think it's better than the standard .doc saved from Word; for importing to InDesign.
    Try these steps.
    In Word:
    File>Save As
Choose RTF (that way you are not overwriting the original file)
    In InDesign:
Start a new document - completely blank - don't worry about page size (A4 will do) and don't worry about margins (standard margins will do)
Use File>Place and import the RTF file you just saved
If that imports ok - then select all the text
File>Export and choose RTF (rich text format)
Now use that new RTF to import to your layout
(there is no need to worry about images, you should reimport all  images that are in Word through File>Place; if you have any images in  your Word document. Make sure you use the same source file as when you  placed into Word)
The reasons for the steps above is because there is a lot of unnecessary styles made with Word - and importing to InDesign and a fresh Export to RTF makes a cleaner file to use with InDesign.

  • After December 2014 security updates, Word 2010 won't let me edit forms any longer

I just installed the December 2014 security udpates. Today, when I open the timesheet form I use every week to record time, Word won't let me edit the form fields in the document. I can select them (sometimes) and it even occasionally lets me resize them,
but I can't type into the free form text fields any longer. I even tried unprotecting the document, but Word won't let me do that either, although I suppose it is possible I forgot the password. But none of the standard ones I use will unlock the form I created.
I'm not using XML form fields; I'm using the legacy text form field. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?
    Thanks,
    Jack

I'm afraid that your choice if names is the problem. Try "RoomSched2X", or similar, and let us know how it goes. If that works you can try some other names of your own choosing.

  • Large cs3 document won't open in cs6

    Good morning,
I have a 1.3gb catalogue that was created in InDesign cs3. I have now got cs6 and have tried to open the file but it keeps freezing on "converting data".
On the odd occasion it crashes the pc almost instantly, on others it just seems to freeze or be making small progress for hours before eventually crashing the pc.
The current scenario has the document being opened for 8hrs and it is about 30% along the progress bar.
Is there anyway that I can improve the performance of this conversion?
I am working on a windows pc with vista 64bit (which works with other documents fine), running with 6gb ram.
    Look forward to any advice.

I can't find anyone with cs3 to open the file, we have a cs4 within the business but again with no joy in opening the file.
A friend of mine has an old cs3 from their student days but I assume it won't let me activate the licence as it as a student / teacher licence and it probably was not deactivated from their old system, and I guess also it's just not the right thing to do...
I have the file in PDF which could be a solution, albeit meaning I lose the edit ability of the old pages, but at least I can use these along side some new pages.
otherwise there's going to be alot of work to replicate this old file in a newer version of ID.
thanks for all your comments, I will let you know how I fair

  • How do i import a large word document into Indesign CS6?

I am a new user to InDesign, using version CS6, I would like to know if there is an easy way to import a MS word document into InDesign. The document is about 1000 pages and contains text, images and tables.

Notes on importing from Word to InDesign CS6 and exporting via Kindle Plugin can be found on my blog at:
    http://02cafd3.netsolhost.com/blogs/eBookTec/?p=316
To make a long story short, the Kindle Plugin has a long-standing problem with tables and/or more than a certain limit of hyperlinks.  Since these problems have persisted for at least 2 years now, I must conclude that there are organizational problems on the Kindle Plugin project.  The possibilities include too many junior programmers, not enough attention to the project, not enough positive incentive to make the plugin work and any number of possible management weaknesses.  It took our JPL team about 3 years to put Spirit and Opportunity on Mars, so there's no way a technical problem could be standing this long in the way of the Kindle Plugin handling tables or any number of embedded hyperlinks - nor, for that matter, a Word source document of any reasonable size whatsoever.  One might also cite a lack of competition in this new business sector but then you'd have to ask, do they want to play in the eBook market or don't they?  Companies like Apple succeed by ignoring the competition and in this way end up setting the standards for decades to come.

  • Large pages document won't save

I have a very large pages document - 400 pages, 1.4GB. I have been replacing all the images in the document with edited versions of them, perhaps making the document slightly larger. When I try to save the document it goes to the halfway mark, stays there for ages, and then says that pages cannot save the document. Is there a certain size document that pages simply won't save as I know I have enough space on my computer to store the file.

Well,  Did you save it as Untitled? Where did you save it? On the HD or on iCloud? Is it just this untitled document or are you having problems with more Pages documents? what else haven't ypu told us?

  • Just updated to Lion.  Didn't realize things like reading a Word document would not be supported.  How do I get these files back and how I do read them going forward?  When a PC user sends me a word document won't I be able to open it and read it?

Just updated to Lion today, 11/22/11.  I did not realize things likes reading a Word document would not be supported.  "You cannot open this because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."  How am I supposed to read and open Word documents from PC users?  Any insight is helpful, thanks!

You have Word 2004 which is PPC based. Lion is not able to execute PPC code. You have to upgrade. Or you can do as I do an open them in Pages, since I refuse to allow anything from Microsloth on my Mac.

  • Multi-Section Word Document Won't Save as Single pdf

I'm using MS Word 2004 and have a document split into 3 sections (so to permit landscape printing of the middle section containg a bunch of big tables, portrait on the two others containg text mostly, before and after).
When I try to create a pdf within the Word Print Dialog, 3 separate pdfs are created -- one for each section. Is there a way to get it to create just 1 pdf?
I don't do this sort of thing very often, so hope there is some easy, inexpensive way. I thought about copying the tables and then pasting as a picture, rotating it, but the margins for the middle center section are also different (so to fit the tables).
Any help or ideas are most appreciated.

Is this a Word document generated by Adobe's RoboHelp product or just a document generated directly in Word?
If the latter, you are asking in the wrong place. Even if you are using RoboHelp, this looks more like a question to ask in the Acrobat forums.

  • Word document won't 'print' to PDF on proper paper size

I have a document in MS Word that's on a 5.5x8.5 page size. If I do a Save As, the resulting PDF uses the proper paper size, but it also shows color--which I don't want for this particular document.
When I do Print and choose Adobe PDF, I can choose Black/white which is great, but I'm struggling to get it to use the right paper size. I've tried ever combination I can think of in the Default Setting and Adobe PDF Page Size options, but can't get it to show anything but 8.5x11.
Any thoughts on how to get the right paper size using Print to PDF?

  • Error 10660 -- Word documents won't open

Not sure where to put this. I bought a new MacBook about a month ago and transferred the entire contents of my old iBook to it. Today I can't open any Word documents. I get a message that "the operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error no. 10660)." I have rebooted twice, but it doesn't help. One of these documents was created yesterday, so this is apparently a very recent problem.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   512 MB DDR2 SDRAM

Select one Word document in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu. Under Open With, choose the desired application from the list, click on the Change All button, and confirm this action. That error message appears when the default application for a specific type of document is in the Trash or isn't available to the computer.

  • Word documents won't convert when combining

Similar to a problem from another post, Word documents will not convert when combining files. I’m only combining a few files at a time—when placed first, the Word document will stall at 10% converted. When placed anywhere else, it skips with an error saying it's unable to open the file, "please check to see if [ I ] have read permission for the...file." (It's my computer; who do I have to ask?) Other files convert/combine just fine (.png, jpeg’s.) I’m using a 32 bit version of XP and I do have the pdf converter from Word installed as an add in. Very annoying problem. Can anyone help?
    Thanks

If you upgrade word the documents switch from .doc to .docx
