Larger HD, but internet running slower?

I have an iMac G5 which was purchased last year with a 160 GB hard drive. A few weeks ago, the hard drive failed, and I sent it in for repair. There were some delays and problems and ultimately we ended up getting a larger hard drive in compensation for the trouble: 250 GB. I was excited about this, until I turned my computer on. I had to make several software downloads and iTunes downloads, and they took up to ten times as long as they had on the previous hard drive. I don't know if this is an internet thing or something to do with the new hard drive, but any help would be appreciated. Why do downloads which previously took 20 minutes now take five hours?

I believe the SATA bus controller chip is Intel. AFAIK, they don't make drives.
the model information simply says "ST3250824AS Q".
OK, that's a 250 GB Seagate Barracuda (7200.9 series) 7200 rpm, 8 MB cache.

I'm hesitant to offer advice on G5's -- but there was recently a case of a similar
"running slower" problem with a CoreDuo iMac (much like G5 in many respects).
The solution was to remove a jumper on the drive -- it was also a Seagate, and
Seagate appears to be shipping new drives with the unwanted jumper installed.

As far as firmware ID... there's no specific listing for one, is there another
name for it? I'm not very proficient in the inner workings of the computer.
That's OK, the firmware ID (a.k.a. "Revision") won't mean anything to me for
that drive (there's a known 'issue' with some firmware revs on other models).
However, it might be helpful if you could copy & paste the entire "Serial-ATA"
information listing into a post. It should look something like the listing below.
I'm not looking for anything in particular -- just fishing for possible clues.

My internet runs slow on my Mac mini after I loded the new OS

I sopped by the apple store with my Mac book air.  It worked well.   I took it home still same problem I have two wireless networks Uverse and AirPort Extreme.  My iMac was connected to the Uverse and the MacBook Air and Mac mini was connected to the Airport. When I connect all three to the Uverse everything works well. When I connect any one to the AirPort it is very slow. It worked fine with the old OS but not with the new OS. Is look like problem is with the AirPort Extreme and the new OS.

  • Internet runs slow adsl2+ ethernet

    internet runs slow adsl2+ ethernet

(Without giving more info, it is very hard to determine.
Yes, ethernet connection indeed elminates the Wi-Fi interference and such, but more details needs to be furnished in order to make judgement:
1: What application are you using? (Watch Youtube stream slow, Running uTorrent on OSX, or using some VPN services in order to watch Netflix and Hulu Plus that has yet to reach to your location or using FaceTime and such video calls etc)
2: What time does it happen (ISP may slows down connection during peak hours)
3: I presume your speed is somewhere in between 10Mbps ~ 25Mbps, correct me if I am wrong
4: How many other device are using the same Internet network. Are there any person using other computers / tablets / phones to surf Internet or even stream videos concurrently as you)
    1. Watching youtube. No video phone stuff including skype, just regular internet browsing.
    2. Happening constantly. No fast or slow hours.
    3. Firefox runs at 700kbs on a 6mbs line.
    4. No other devices or people connected.
I have changed over from netgear n600 router to Belkin and back again. Exact same speeds.
Must be software or hardware within mac.

  • Strange problem... Query runs faster, but report runs slow...

    Hi Gurus,
We are using Report 10g on 10g Application server and solaris. we created a report on a table which has 10,000 rows. The report has 25 columns. when we run this query in Toad it took 12 sec for fetching all these 10,000 rows
But when we run the report with Destype = 'FILE' and Desformat = 'DELIMITEDDDATA', it is taking 5 to 8 minutes
to open in excel ( we concatenated mimetype=vnd-msexcel at the end of the url if the Destype=FILE). We removed the layout in the report as it is taking 10 to 15 mins to run to Screen with Desformat=HTML/PDF(formating pages taking more time). We are wondering why DELIMITEDDATA format is taking long time as it runs only query.
Does RWSERVLET take more time of writing the data to the Physical file in the cache dir? Our cache size is 1 GB. we have 2 report servers clustered. Tracing is off.
Please advise me if there are any report server settings to boost the performance.
    Thanks alot,
    Ram.

  • New IMAC but Photoshop running slow

    Hi There
Could some one help me? I just brought a brand new IMAC 21.5" the base model (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics) with 4 gb RAM. I downloaded the trial version of adobe cs5 to check if it runs ok but when I am starting things from scratch like just creating things from a blank canvas it runs so slow like trying to paint stuff and render it comes up with a loading screen it just doesn’t do it straight away. But when I am working on photos it seems to run ok. Is there away to solve this issue? Do I need to updated my RAM to make it run smooth?

The mostly likely reason Photoshop will run slow is insufficient RAM and since you downloaded the demo, you got the extended version which is a huge memory hog. I found it slow on my similarly configured notebook but the regular version runs just fine for me.
What does seem odd though is that you say it isn't slow on photos, just when you are starting from a blank slate. So I'm thinking - check the pixel size and resolution of your default blank document and compare to a loaded photo. Is the size and resolution of your blank document larger? I'm guessing it might be. That points to RAM again but if you don't need that big a document or that resolution you can reduce it.

  • Internet running slow on mac but not PC

The internet on my MacBook is running painfully slow both through a wired connection and through my wireless network. The problem happens when utilizing Firefox, Safari, updates and iTunes. It makes it impossible to view Youtube videos and download large software upgrades.
I have tried speedtest.net and the download rate is reasonable, however it does not match the download rate my computer experiences. The download as shown in the dialogue box (when I try to download software updates, photos, etc.) is in the range of 3 - 6 KB/sec but speedtest shows a download speed of 10Mbps.
Any ideas on how I should proceed?
    Thank you.

bumping because I've been having the same issue ever since I came home from college. basically the situation is that websites load extremely slowly on my mac pro, but not on any other computer (all windows pcs) connected to the same network. I even disconnected my mac pro and plugged in my windows laptop and the connectivity was fine - which makes me think it has something to do with the settings on the mac.
I disabled IPV6 and reboot my mac, router, and modem but to no avail. what's wrong?! has anyone found a definitive solution for this problem? it's very aggravating.

  • Since i updated the wifi on iMac internet runs slow

Bought imac 27 inch 2.7ghz with 4gb ram last week - everything was running fine - super fast - i havent done anything of note on the computer - installed photoshop, trial version of word etc etc.
I updated a few things yesterday - namely the wifi update to version 1?
my safari is now annoyingly slow - also anything else i do needing internet connection is slow
my iphone, ipad and the laptop is all working superfast on internet - but pages on this imac now take a while to load (by a while i mean 20-30 secs) it wasnt like this before and as ive only just bought it its frustrating me to the point i want to take it back - i can follow instructions etc etc to solve this but im at a loss as its my first mac and was loving the experience but this mac is mainly for internet and want to know whats wrong with it.
any help would be greatly appreciated before i return it to shop or tell apple to come and sort it.

Boot from your recovery partition (command-R at startup) and select Get Help Online. Safari will launch. Is it slow?

  • Why is my internet running slow on my macbook pro?

About a month ago I hooked up a router for me and my fiancees to use our laptops. She has a pc and I have a macbook pro. Everything was working fine, but for the past week, the internet on my mac has been running painfully slow. Her internet is working just fine, but mines is almost non-existent. I plugged the modem directly into my mac to see what happened and it worked fine then. But when i hooked up the router again it essentially stopped working again. In lamen's terms how can i fix this?

You tacked on an inactive thread.  Post your own topic and supply more detailed information to get help.
It is very difficult to offer troubleshooting suggestions when the "os version" you are using is unknown as each os has their own troubleshooting solutions.
Please complete or update your system profile so the users here can properly help you.

  • Internet running slow

Our computer has been very slow to load internet pages.  I have noticed the slow-down over this past week. . . all software is up to date, and I am not sure what diagnostics to run next, but I would love some help to get it back to "speed". . . .

Deal with ISP and your modem, router, first. What type modem and router do you have now?
Consider this: a storm can knock out a modem if it isn't behind a UPS and surge protector desgined for networks, or a storm could affect your area.
If one computer is fine but another is not what it use to then it could be.
Why not just do a quick install of OS X on another disk drive run 10.7.x update and try.
Try a different browser. Using Safari, try Firefox. Check the Safari forum.
What do you get when you do a test:
    http://speedtest.net/
Post the ping and dl results.
And contact ISP forums. They can be very good.
Definitely reset or clear and delete any and all browser cache, history and other temp folders.

  • Why is my internet running slow?

My internet is running much slower than it used too, any ideas how I can fix that?

I'm having the same problem. I think it's the new software update, do you have 10.6.8?

  • Upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6 but now running SLOW?!?

When I was upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6 my computer went to sleep. When I woke it up the installation window disappeared and was replaced by that spinning sun ray thing. I don't know if the computer actually went to sleep or looked like it went to sleep--I want to think that the computer couldn't actually go to sleep during an important function like a system upgrade.
But regardless the installation stopped working. I rebooted from the Snow Leopard installation disc and completed the installation. It seemed to remember where it left off and everything seemed fine until the reboot. Snow Leopard ran very, very slow. Like I had 6,000 fonts loaded and was running 6 intense programs at once. I am thinking the installation messed up since the computer crashed.
I am currently restoring my system from my Time Machine and will try the Snow Leopard install again.
Does anyone have any insight into what is going on? Or some advice? Someone mentioned to erase the hard drive and do a clean install, but how would I get my files back from the Time Machine after that? Wouldn't it be piece by piece, because if I restored a back-up after an OS upgrade I would think it would restore the old OS.
    Best regards,
    Kkamin

I would recommend doing a clean install of OS 10.6 (Which for you might mean installing 10.5, and doing an Erase & Install to 10.6 if you can't install 10.6 directly). While it seems convenient, I have found that installing a new OS on top of an old one is just asking for trouble...any quirks/glitches that have developed can transfer over and even new problems can develop.
If you have a Time Machine backup, you should be able to go back and transfer your Apps/Documents/Files to the fresh install without moving system files (the ones likely to be corrupted/glitchy)

  • 8GB RAM but still running slow ?

    Hello,
my mac has been running very slow lately, even though i have 8GM RAM and i don't run any 'heavy' music\video apps.
i downloaded Memory Clean and it usually shows i have less then 100 MB free,
even when i run just a few apps like Safari and Pages.
so i made a check with EtreCheck,
looks like i got a few problems..
can anyone tell me how to solve them ?

That is a lot of page outs for just a day and a half of being up.  It is most likely the reason why Mac OS X terminated a lot of its daemons to give more space to what you were doing at the time.  Did you do something in the 32 hours your system was up before the EtreCheck that would account for that high pageout number?  Something that is very VERY Memory Intensive?
You Activity Monitor Memory display has Safari consuming a lot of RAM 1.6+GB.  That is a bit high.  How may tabs do you have open?  Is it possible you have too many open, or that one of the web sites you are visiting has Javascript that is consuming lots of RAM on behalf of the web site?
You kernel_task looked about right for 8GB of RAM. Most of that is virtual memory page tables for the apps you are running.  As a point of comparison, I have 16GB and my kernel_task is 1.25GB of RAM.
    Ahat are these processes?

  • DNS changed and Mail, MSN, Jabber don't connect :S (but Internet runs well)

First of all, sorry for my english, i'm spanish .
My connection to internet was like this (now i've changed)
    iMac ->(wifi)-> router1 ->(ethernet)-> router2 -> Internet.
I always used the OpenDNS (208.67.220.220/208.67.222.222) and all my applications connect to internet well.
Two days ago I read about the GoogleDNS (the new service), that they are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, so i changed my DNS in the router1 and in the iMac.
It goes really well for two hours. Then, when I rebooted my iMac many services like Mail (IMAP and POP), MSN, Jabber... didn't connect saying that "there is no connection" or "connection refused", but I had internet (and nslookup went well) so safari, skype, spotify... went well and at full speed.
When it was driving me mad I returned to OpenDNS... but they didn't connect yet.
Now, i am connected to the primary router via ethernet, and my iMac has the OpenDNS... and I don't know why, but it still doesn't connect.
Do you have any suggestion? Do you want any log?.
    Thanks!

  • After updating to latest firefox computer on internet running slower, taking longer to go to links and sites.also if i click on an email link the link keeps refreshing as mailto and wont stop opening new tabs very quickly, have to shut down to stop it.

since installing latest update, when using internet, email everything has slowed down and is taking long to go to websites to upload pictures to emails.
also when i click on an email link to send email the tab bar keeps refreshing and opening a new tab very quickly all i can read cos its going so fast is mailto this has happened several times on various websites,i clicked on a email us link on grangerhertzog.com yesterday and it did it.

You get that problem if you select the Firefox program to handle a file if you get an "open with" dialog.
