Largest hard disk on MSI KT4A Ultra (MS-6590)

MSI say the largest hard disk the KT4A Ultra (MS-6590) supports is 160GB:
http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=prodfaqanswer&faq_no=912&prod_no=548&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=
Is that right?
Does it apply to SATA or just IDE?
Can a BIOS update or other patch get over that limit please?
Thanks
Toby

I want to fit a 250gb HDD to my system. Will it work?
Check your board's support page here. Look for the Test Report for Hard Disks. Once a board supports greater than 137gb, any size drive will work. If you see a size such as 160gb tested as OK, then you will be fine!

  • Problem of 1.5TB hard disk with msi p7n sli platinum

I have just bought a new 1.5TB hard disk (Western Digital). Bios can detect the disk but when i boot into Windows (XP sp3) its does not show?? can anyone tell me how to fix the problem. I have updated my mobo bios to 1.3 which is the latest available from the MSI site.
    Thanks in advanced

Did you initialize the disk yet?  Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, and then click on Disk Management.  You should now see the disk listed there.  Right-click the disk and initialize it.  You can get to disk management directly by hitting the WindowsKey+R, type diskmgmt.msc, hit okay or enter, and the disk management box below will show.

  • CONSIDER UPGRADING HARD DISK OF MSI GT60-0NC

I had bought my new MSI GT60-0NC recently in Malaysia. My com is equipped with 750GB 7200rpm hdd, probably sata maybe.
So far I am satisfied and indeed quite impressed with its performance. Who knows maybe after few years my specs will soon outdated and cant cope with my requirements for performance?
I would like to seek for some guidance for upgrading hdd to other type of hard disk drives like ssd or raid-II.
Is any kind of SSD hard drive can be installed on the laptop? Any brand recommendations for ssd or hybrid hard disk drives?
    Thanks a lot.

It's really hit or miss with most SSD's for some reason.
I've seen a few people who got Samsung 840 non-PRO/PRO drives have problems, and some who had no problems.
Personally, I've got the super raid adapter and have 2 x Mushkin Atlas Deluxe mSATA 240GB drives in my laptop, and it work great.
I've had a few people with Intel 520 based drives have problems as well.
Personally, I would find what you want and try it out. If it doesn't work, you may have to return it though. Everything SHOULD work, but it's not always the case unfortunately.

    Hi gruberstuber,
It sounds horribly like you're IBM Deskstar may be living up to it's more threatening nickname of DeathStar. These HDDs have a pretty awful history for reliability and from the symptoms you describe, I would be feeling pretty nervous about continuing with it.
Do you have access to another known good HDD at all, preferably from Western Digital or Maxtor? If you do, it would be worth substituting your IBM for one of these and giving that a go. Might work wonders.
It's not as likely, but it's possible that your PSU is rated slightly to small for the Graphics Card you're using. The GF4 4600 is notoriously power hungry and it is possible that this could be drawing your main voltages down to below -5% of the nominal voltage, this can cause you all sorts of weird problems. As a guide, you can't really tell if a PSU is holding up OK under load conditions by checking the voltages when the system is unloaded, all PSU's will give you terrific voltages in that situation.
I would go up to at least a 400W good quality PSU from either Antec or Enermax to be absolutely sure that the GF4 4600 is being catered for.
    All the best,
    Dimal.

  • Initializing hard disk controller on kt3 ultra 2

I have a kt3 ultra 2 and when I open my pc, the start blocks on initializing hard drive controller (on the D-Bracket) but my harddisk is well plug. Someone have an idea ?

    Hi,
    I suggest disassemble the whole PC, use plastic standoffs for the motherboard, and put all back together;
Another is to use 6 screws + paper washer to hold the motherboard on the casing.
    This should fix the problem.

  • KT4A ULTRA 6590 DVD and Floppy issues

I'm stumped and frustrated...please be kind!  I've upgraded my KT4A ULTRA 6590 Ver 1. with AMD Athon XP Barton 2500 for my kids computer.  Everything works great except I cannot see files on either my DVD or 3.5" floppy...unless there is a disk in the drive when I boot.  Oddly, I can burn CDs but cannot see the result until I load the CD on my other PC.  Through several suggestions from reading the forum, I did go to Safe Mode and sure enough the floppy and DVD work fine.  I also tried another known good CD RW and it also exhibited this same behavior.
The BIOS version when I start up is v3.0 (see below), but things appear to be pointing to drivers and/or BIOS.  Did update/install the nVidia driver for the video card and also updated to VIA 4 in 1 ver 4.55.  Have made several unsuccessful attempts to use the Live Update 3...it basically does not do anything, or it must be incredibly slow when it goes to the MSI website.
In various other attempts to find the correct BIOS for MSI KT4A ULTRA 6590 vER.1, I visited the MSI iste "BIOS Search" and discovered that it has a version 1.4 (4/29/2003) and v3.0 (5/29/2003)...this looks fishy to me.  On yet another MSI Mainboard BIOS detail it says use Ver 3.0, but in the very next line says "This BIOS cannot be used on KT4 Ultra (MS-6590)".
I was further consfused when attempting to determine which BIOS was installed. "MSI Info View" program BIOS tab says that "AMI BIOS version is 07.00T", While the  MSI Fuzzy Logic program on the MSI info page says the "Chipset : Via KT600".  Neither of these appear to be correct.
At this point I ready to throw this thing away and buy another board.
    jw
    -MSI KT4A ULTRA 6590 vER.1
    -AMI rev 3.0??
    -AMD Athlon XP 2500 Barton
    - 512MB
    -NVidia GeForce2 400 MX
    -Power Supply 500W+
    -40GB (IDE1 Master) WEstern Digital 10GB WD (IDE1 Slave)
    -DVD RW NEC 3520 A
    -Windows XP Service Pack 2

Cleared the CMOS and made the advanced chipset configuration changes...but no improvement. I did also confirm that during boot, the drives are recognized properly.
Not an expert, but since it operates normally in Safe Mode I'm still suspicious of the IDE, graphics drivers, and/or conflicts. When I look at the device manager in XP, the graphics drivers is new as expected, yet the IDE are standard XP.   Since I updated to the 4-in-1 version 4.55, I would have  expected some change to the IDE driver dates, but it appears is using the standard Windows drivers...but not sure.

  • Upgrade Hard Disk in MacBook Pro

I recently purchased (within the last 2months) a new MacBook Pro with the 200GB Hard Drive. I decided that the upgrade to the 250GB was not a significant upgrade to warrant the money and that I would inquire at this point what the maximum upgrade Apple will perform. That leads me to my question.
I need to have Apple install the new hard drive because I have the 3 year protection plan and do not wish to void the warranty. Can someone tell me what the largest hard disk that Apple will install is?
    Thanks.

I have checked with several sources and found the same. Apple will not do the upgrade, but you need to find an authorized Apple Service Provider to do the upgrade.
Even though your Apple warranty is still intact, it will no longer cover the drive itself. so if your drive fails, you will have to use the warranty supplied by the drive-vendor (3 years on Hitachi Travelstar 500GByte). You'll probably have to pay labor to have it repaired though.
I just had the 500GB installed by an Apple Dealer in Boulder last week.

After som reading at MSI homepage i noticed that my motherboard suppurted AMD Athlon 3000+ if i flashed the BIOS.
So i did get a brand new AMD Athlon 3000+, flashed the BIOS to ver 1.4. And I changed the Frequency/Voltage to 166, and i was up and running.....for a while. Every time a start a game like FS 2004 or are working in 3-4 different programs the computer like DW, PS and Illustratoer:
    1. close down one or two programs, or shuts down the game, without any warning.
    2. reboot the computer without any warning.
But if i change the Frequency/Voltage to 133 the system get's stabil.

  • MSI B85M-G43 can't install Windows 7. Hard disk not detected.

    Hi,
I just built a new computer for the first time.  I followed the instructions and did everything correctly. but am unable to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. Hard disk isn't always detected during the installation.
But when it appeared in the "Where do you want to install Windows" list along with system, I tried to format the hard disk and got a message "Failed to format the select partition. [Error 0x80070057]."
Then I restarted the computer, the hard disk no longer displayed in the list, so I put motherboard driver disc and clicked on Load Driver and opened Storage\Intel\PCH_12.0\f6flpy-x64. It loaded, then I got a message saying "To continue installation, use the Load Driver option to install 32-bit and signed 64-bit drivers. Installing an unsigned 64-bit device driver is not supported and might result in an unusable Windows installation."
I restarted again and disabled Driver Signature Enforcement, but it didn't help. I still got the same message.
In the computer case I have these devices:
    - MSI B85M-G43, Socket-1150
    - Intel Core i5-4430 Processor
    - Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 8GB
    - MSI GeForce GTX 650Ti BOOST 1GB
    - Cooler Master GX 550W PSU
    - WD Desktop Green 1TB
    - SuperMulti 16X DVD(+/-)R/RW 12X RAM (+/-)R DL LightScribe SATA drive
Everything is plugged in correctly. Hard disk connector plugged in SATA 1 and DVD -> SATA 2.
The installation is pretty slow, regardless if i install it via USB or x16 DVD. All except DVD and hard disk are disabled. It's also worth to mention that even DVD and USB aren't always detected in the click BIOS.
So I'm wondering if anyone here can help me? Thanks

    Hi and
1: What BIOS version you have? .. Have you tryed to downgrade/upgrade it already?
2: Have you tryed it in those SATA 2 ports? ...is it same strory?
    - On SATA there aint any master or Slave like on IDE so if you are under same controller it dosent mutter what port you use on what device.
Note: SATA 3 Ports are faster then SATA2 ports, but even SATA 1 can handel your DVD or HDD. So no lose if you need to use SATA 2 ports.
Hope this get you foward! Cheers Mummy

  • Hard disk problem after installing Solaris 10 u5 on a Sun Ultra 24

    Hi.
After receiving a new Sun Ultra 24, shipped with Solaris 10 u4, the first thing I did was installing Solaris 10 u5. X wouldn't start but that was not a big problem and installed it in text mode. Installation went fine but, when the system starts, a single beep is heard and after some seconds some warning message appear on the console, before the "Hostname: ..." message, informing that some read operation on my hard disk had timed out and were aborted. The system then starts up normally. The only other anomaly is that the diagnostic partition in unbootable.
I ran the hard disk tests from the tools and drivers CDs and all of the tests were passed. Solaris 10 u4 was working normally so I'm wondering if this may be a bug.
    Thanks for your help,
    Enrico.

Thanks anyway, I discovered what the problem was: a bug in Solaris 10 u5:
