Largest hard drive in Ultra-10?

I've got an Ultra 10 that I'd like to replace the hard drive in. Here are the specs on it:
Motherboard: 375-0009
OBP: 3.31
CPU: 360 Mhz
Memory: 512Mb
OS: Solaris 9 with latest patch cluster as of September
Right now It's got the 4.xx gig drive that came with it. I'd like to replace this with a much larger drive.
What is the largest drive that this system will reasonably support? So far I've not been able to find any definitive information on what size drives this system will support.
I've seen lots of posts from people here asking how to get drives working, but no responses that indicated that someone was trying to use a drive that was too big.
Is there an official answer to this question? If not, what is the largest capacity drive anyone has gotten to work in this kind of a system? Which vendor produced the drive?
Thanks :)

I don't recall needing any specific geometry, it was pretty much plug-and-play. make sure that your OBP and OS are up to date and the format command should see all the space available.
For reference, I set mine up as:

  • What's the largest hard drive size my 8600 can support?

    hi all,
Years ago,I noticed my 8100 Powermac couldn't support larger hard drives than 2GB so I had to partition. Now I have a 8600 Mac with a 4GB hard with no partition. What's the largest hard drive size my PowerMac 8600 can support?

Here's an 18GB SCSI HD on eBay that says it will work on a PM 8600. http://cgi.ebay.com/18-GB-IBM-SCSI-HARD-DRIVE-Apple-Power-Mac%7CG3%7CG4%7CG5-Wrt y_W0QQitemZ120360935737QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090109?IMSfp=TL090109111005r37358
You could also install an ATA PCI card and probably go larger.

  • A20m Largest Hard Drive Supported

I have a IBM Thinkpad A20m. I now have a 60 Gig Hard Drive in it but I want to know what the largest Hard Drive this Laptop will Support. I have the latest Bios installed by looking at the Lenovo Website Bios Information. I run an External 500 Gig Hard Drive but would like my Internal C Drive to be larger.
Moderator note; added model to subject

I don`t know what the largest HD size you can put into an A20m. It may be as low as 120GB. However these systems use the older parallel PATA interface and AFAIK the largest available HD of that type is 500GB.
If you want more capacity you can only do it with an external, USB-connected HD. One problem with that is that your system`s USB interface is the older, slower 1.1 standard. If you want to access the drive at USB 2.0 speeds you`ll need to get a PCMCIA card that has USB 2 support, e.g. from Amazon.

  • What is the largest hard drive I can upgrade to for MacBook Pro A1278 Early '11

What is the largest hard drive I can upgrade to for macbook pro A1278 Early 2011?  I have seen 750GB on some websites, but I would like a 1TB  I am looking for SATA 6.0GB, 1TB 7200.  Is this dependant on the physical size of the hard drive? I have seen a height of 15mm and 9.5 mm.  How do I know what will fit??

I have not seen any 7200 rpm 1 TB HDDs.  They all are 5400 rpm.  I would say that this HDD comes closest to your requirements.  Tomorrow, there may be others.

  • What is the largest hard drive that can be put in a Macbook Pro 17 MA897

I am looking to upgrade an existing Macbook Pro 17 model MA897 and am looking for the specifications as to the largest hard drive that can be installed and where is the best place to purchase drives.

The HDD makers have yet to breach the 1TB limit in the 2.5" formfactor. But there is hope, as one of the makers (Toshiba, IIRC) announced the discovery of a radical new way of magnetic encoding which will permit much denser packing of the magnetic domains in the rotating disk, and much higher capacities. Promised to come out with 3-4TB 2.5" devices before the year is out and maybe 10TB+ in the coming years. We'll have to wait and see.
BTW and since The Age of the Lion (and probably Mountain Lion too) has forsaken the need of an optical drive for system recovery, some users have decided to remove the no longer critical device and planting another HDD in its place. Might be looking into if you really need the capacity and don't care to lug even more weight above of what the 17" entails.

  • Largest hard drive available for MacBook?

Just saw the preview for Leopard - very excited about eventually buying it, but I'm wondering if my 80 gb hard drive will be large enough to take full advantage of its features while leaving space for my other stuff. (For the record, I have 35 gb available now.) Am I just being paranoid - and if I'm not, what's the largest hard drive (in storage space, of course) available for the MacBook at this time?

    david-
as far as i know, 160GB (hitachi travelstar). here is
    the link:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?Model=248
    &Type=Data%20Storage&TI=2021
no, you are not being paranoid. it doesn't matter if
it is the leopard or a new tom cruise screen saver.
eventhough 35GB is still alot of space (my dell i am
currently using has only 18GB total and i have a few
hundred megabytes left!), you'll eventually need a
bigger storage a year or so down the road.
how about an external hard drive?
    best luck!
An external hard drive for nearly full-time use with a laptop would be cumbersome at best, even if it were small, it would still take up one USB port most of the time. I'd rather swap out now or soon than that. Thanks for the input.

  • 2008 15" MacBook Pro, what is the largest hard drive I can get?

I want to know what is the largest hard drive I an get:
    5400rpm: GB
    7200rpm: GB
    Where can I purchase them.
    Happy Father's Day,
    Sebastian

    I think the current answers are;
    200 GB for 7200 RPM
    500 GB for 5400 RMP
    I looked at;

  • Can I install three of hard drive on Ultra-10??

    Help me, plz~~
    I have Ultra-10 with Solaris 8.
    <Primary IDE channel>
    Rear hard drive(master-device 0) --------- Front hard drive(slave-device 1) ----------- Motherboard J15(primary channel)
    <Sencondary IDE channel>
    hard drive(master-device 0) ------------------ CD-ROM(slave-device 1) -------------------- Motherboard J14(secondary channel)
    Can I this configuration?
so, I was installed 40GB hard drive. I use it now.
Can I install more than 40GB hard drive?

Yes and in fact it can accept 2 hard drives. Any 2.5 inch wide SATA laptop hard drive 9.5 mm thick will work and those are available up to 1.5 TB I believe. To add a second hard drive you need a caddy and connector piece sold here:
    http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_5&products_id=131
There is a link on the page above which will lead you to installation instructions.
If you can give us some idea of what you are looking to do, we can link you to specific places to buy drives at good prices.

  • Whats the largest hard drive available?

What is the largest internal hard drive currently available for a macbook pro, 15 inch, 2.2 ghz?

Samsung has announced a 500 GB notebook drive, but I am not sure how available it really is. OEM's can get it I think, but I haven't heard of any individual that can. Some of the other 500 GB notebook drives are too big for the 15" MBP, and will fit only the 17" model. I believe that Hitachi and maybe one other manufacturer are supposed to be making the 500 GB drives.
You can get a 320 GB notebook drive from Western Digital and they are readily available. When I bought mine, Newegg had the best price and free shipping. It was also on sale at the time.
    Good luck!

  • Largest hard drive a Enterprise 420R can accept

    Hello All,
I've been looking around and am having trouble finding a definitive answer to the question of what is the largest hardrive that a 420R can accept. We'd be most interested in hearing from real life experiences. What is the largest size drive people have been actually able to use in a 420R? Thanks for any advice.
    Regards,
    Vince

    Hello Vince,
keep a few things in mind:
    1. The Full Components List of an EOL system shows only the components current at time of last shipment. I use a 36GB full height disk in an Ultra 30. This drive isn't qualified for the Ultra 30, it just runs to hot (but is a Sun branded disk (540-4263) with cooling plate). I'm not suggesting that 36GB is the largest disk for the E420R, 73 or 146GB should work too.
    2. Two factors have changed: capacity and transfer speed/modes. The new, higher capacity drives aren't just bigger, they offer Ultra320 opposed to Ultra SCSI (40 MB/sec) used in the E420R.
If you use one of these newer, faster disks the SCSI interface of the E420R is the bottleneck.
Any LVD/SE disk that can be operated in Single-Ended mode (decreased speed) works in the E420R. Most drives detect SE and switch to this mode, a few require setting a jumper to force SE.
Install a LVD/SE hba (e.g. 375-3191) in the 64-bit slot of your system and use these faster disks in an external enclosure.

  • Different venodr's hard drive on Ultra 10?

    Hi All:
Turns out that I can not install Solaris 10 on my Ultra 10
machine, since it has only 4 G. Since Sun's Hard disk
is kinda expensive(9G for $90 -about), is it possible
to replace with other vendor's hard drive? What are the
problems that I may come across?
    Thanks,
    Jane

No problems really, it should work fine.
There are two catches i can think of, first of all it might be a good idea to upgrade the OBP to version 3.31 if you are planning to use a large disk (patch 106121-18).
Second of all Solaris might complain that the disk has an unknown label, but to set a label you just need to run "format".

  • How to boot from second hard drive in Ultra Bay

    Hi all!
I recently installed a SSD drive as my primary disk and mounted my old hard drive in the Ultrabay. It still has all its original partitions, which are:
    Windows "System Drive"
    Windows OS
    Ubuntu
    Windows Programs
    General Data
I can access 1., 2., and 5. from within my new Win7  install on the SSD.
My SSD drive is fully encrypted with TrueCrypt.
Is there any way I can boot from the HDD in the Ultrabay? I still want to access some of the old data on the system drive.
Ideally, there would also be a way to keep the Ubuntu partition and boot it when required. Any chance of making that happen?
    TIA
    Matt

Hit F12 to pull up the boot menu when you turn the machine on. Select the drive in the Ultrabay. Beware that the drive you boot off of will become the C: drive until you boot off the other drive again. One thing you should do if you haven't already done it is put the stock drive back in the main drive bay, boot into Windows, and burn a recovery disc set. You may need this in the future and it is a good thing to have should you decide to sell the system later since you sill be able to restore it to factory condidtion.
If you just need to access the other partiton all you need to do is right click Computer in Windows Explorer, select Manage, click Disk Management, and assign the partition a drive letter. I would recommend just burning the recovery disc set and wiping out the stock drive so that you can use it for storage.

  • Largest Hard Drive for a Ti/800mhz

I am thinking on replacing my 40g with a larger one or even replacing the superdrive with another hd, I was wondering if my Ti will only see a max of 120g like my PM/G4's, I know it will see larger ones using firewire but this is a laptop and using an external hd just don't make since,,,,

I found some new information on this question. I apologize for not discovering it sooner, but I only came across it on the Western Digital website. It appears that any model introduced after June 2002, and the listed models, can handle a larger drive. Mine was introduced in April 2002, and purchased new in September 2002. But...see my notes at the end of this post.
Apple article HT2544 addresses this issue (see (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2544?viewlocale=en_US#bootrom), as does Western Digital Knowledge Base Answer ID 927 (see http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=927).
    +From Western Digital:+
Are EIDE drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary) supported in Mac systems
    Question
I am considering buying an EIDE drive larger than 137GB for my Mac system. Are EIDE drives larger than 137GB supported in Mac systems?
    Answer
Not all Mac systems can properly support EIDE drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary). In many cases, the system needs to be a newer Mac G4 or G5 system. According to Apple, there are two primary requirements that must be met to support these drives:
The computer must have Mac OS 10.2 or later
The system BootROM must provide support for the drive
For full details, please see Apple Document #86178.
Note: There are third-party controller cards designed for use with large EIDE drives and Macs. Please contact Apple or the card manufacturer to find out if a specific controller card will work with your Mac. According to Apple, you must still have OS version 10.2 or later, even with the controller card, to use the full drive capacity.
    +From Apple+:
There are two primary requirements that must be met for higher capacity hard drives to be fully utilized within a computer.
    1. The computer must have Mac OS X 10.2 or later.
    2. The computer must provide support for the drives via the BootROM.
    Products Affected
    Mac OS X 10.4, Mac OS X 10.3, Mac OS X 10.2, Mac OS X 10.5
Mac OS X 10.2 or later
The high capacity drive must be formatted using Mac OS X 10.2 or later in order for partition sizes beyond 128 GB to be recognized. If you plan to start the partition up from Mac OS 9.2.2, the partition sizes may be a maximum of 200 GB. If you have a drive that is larger than 200 GB in size, you will need to create multiple partitions with no single partition exceeding 200 GB in size. Once formatted, the drive will be recognized under the version of Mac OS 9.2.2 that comes with the Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) and later products.
If the drive is not formatted using Mac OS X 10.2 or later, the maximum volume size available is limited to approximately 128 GB.
    Support via the BootROM
The BootROM of Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors), Xserve, Power Mac G5, and any other model introduced after June 2002 can accommodate these larger drives.
For additional details on the volume and file size limitations under OS X, see:
Mac OS X: Mac OS Extended Format - Volume and File Limits
Mac OS X Server 10.0.3 and later: Maximum UFS Partition Size Is Less Than 1 TB
Note that the 2 conditions appear to be in the conjunctive, not disjunctive; i.e., both must be met.
My TiBook doesn't seem to fit the parameters required to recognize larger drives. It was introduced in April 2002, and is not a Power Mac with Mirrored Drive Doors, nor an XServe or Power Mac G5.
However, I bought a 160 GB external hard drive some years ago. Disk Utility recognized it as 160 GB when I connected it via Firewire 400, and successfully partitioned it into 34.44 GB and 114.35 GB volumes, totaling 148.79 GB. This is quite more than the 128 GB limitation that concerns us.
So I wonder: Is an easy test just connecting an external hard drive larger than 128 GB and seeing if the OS recognizes it?

I have a MacBook air with 120GB SSD drive. I have been running out of space on it for a couple of months now trying to incrementally creating space.
