Largest hdd for 1st gen Macbook?

What's the largest hdd you can install in a 1st gen macbook? At first I heard 200gb
but now I'm hearing it's larger than that.

The capacity of the drive is going to change as larger capacity drives are produced. As long as the drive meets the physical dimensions and interface type for the computer itself it will work fine.
There are alot of posts from a user "First Magus" in regards to exact dimensions of the drive you need, as well as replacement instructions. The following is one that has a lot of info that could be helpful.

I have a 1st Gen, MacBook Pro from 2006. For the last few years I've had to us my power adaptor as my battery no longer works, and shuts down after 30 seconds it. Now my power adaptor looks like it's coming to an end. Even though it's securely fitted, it often switches off.
I am planning on buying a new MacBook Pro later this year, but for the meantime I'm not sure if I should buy a new power adaptor, or if this is a problem with my MacBook Pro. Also does anyone know where I can buy a battery in the UK for 1st Gen MacBook Pro.

OWC has batteries for 1,1 generation MacBook Pros and they ship internationally - http://eshop.macsales.com/.
Your best bet for a power adapter is to get one from Apple. Third-party adapters just don't seem to be reliable (or safe). You can also buy a replacement battery directly from Apple, of course, but they're a bit more expensive.
    Good luck,

  • More than 2GB RAM 1st gen Macbook

Is there any way possible to get more than 2GB RAM in a 1st gen macbook? I have one 2GB stick in right now but if I try to put even the old 512MB in the other slot I get no video. I also tried two 2GB sticks as well. I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but it doesn't hurt to ask and have hope
I have a dell inspiron with Core2 and it wouldn't see 4GBs until I pulled the battery on it. maybe there is a trick for the macbook like that?

I was hoping since it sees one 2GB stick it may like 2? It was a long shot. I just got this one used, so I'm stuck with it for a while. It runs fine with 2GB though.

  • Could 1st gen macbook burn a DVD larger than 4.3G?

I remember that there used to be said that 1st gen macbook w/ core duo processor can not burn two-layer DVD-r disc or something like that.
Now I am preparing backup my data onto 8.5G DVD-R, could my superdrive handle this kind of job for me?
    many thanks!

According to the specs none of the original core duo MacBooks came with a DL burner. That was introduced in the 2nd generation.
You need to use an external DVD burner to use DL disks.

  • Twitter App. for 1st Gen. iPod Touch

I recently was having problems with the Twitter App. on my 1st Gen. iPod Touch and so decided to delete the app and re-download it again, like I had done a week earlier. During the download an error message popped up stating that I need ios 6 or later to download the app. Apple had updated the Twitter App on March 10th and I tried re-downloading March 14th, however a week earlier I was offered the opportunity to download an earlier version of Twitter. I am currently only able to use Twitter via Safari. Does anyone out there have a solution to get the official Twitter App. (And no "Buy a newer iPod stuff"!)
    Cheers
ps IF ANYONE FROM APPLE MANAGES TO SEE THIS CAN YOU PLEASE OFFER THE OPPRTUNITY TO DOWNLOAD LATER VERSIONS OF APPS FOR 1ST GEN IPOD TOUCH

Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
Apple did not say why did not allow this option for iOS 3.1.3/1G iPod.
Apple does not monitor these forums. To make a suggestion to Apple:

  • Choosing a video card for 1st gen (1,1) mac pro

    Hey all,
Buying a video card for my mac pro to upgrade from the stock 256mb nvidia, and have narrowed it to these three cards.
    ATI X1900 XT
    Nvidia 8800GT
    ATI 4870
I know to make sure I buy the versions compatible with my generation mac pro etc, but they're all relatively close in price (within $100), so barring comparison in that area, which of these cards are the best? Or are they all pretty equal? I know very little about video cards.
Also, as an aside, does the ATI 4890HD work with 1st gen mac pros? I've seen ebay auctions claiming they do, but I know better than to take them at face value.

I wouldn't touch the X1900 overpriced and old.
The 8800GT is hard to find but can be on ebay even for 1st gen
ATI 4870 from Apple is safe bet.

  • What is the best 500GB HDD for a 2007 macbook pro

what is the best 500GB HDD for a 2007 macbook pro. This is a pre unibody machine.
I am upgrading at the minute and can't make my mind up. I need a 7200rpm drive, but have heard some stories concerning overheating etc.
These are the drives I am looking at: Seagate Momentus, Hitachi Travelstar and Western Digital all 500GB, running at 7200rpm.

If you haven't already, you might look a the user comments at http://www.newegg.com on those hard drives. If you don't get other comments here, you might post in the MBP discussion (this is the iMac discussion) at https://discussions.apple.com/community/notebooks/macbook_pro

  • 1st Gen Macbook Core Duo: Proper Procedure to change internal HDD

Greetings to those who read and assist me with my situation:
Just NOW getting to changing my internal HDD for my Core Duo Macbook (1st gen Blackbook 80GB) and want to make sure I naturally go about doing so correctly. I of course do not wanna lose my itunes songs and photos and other personal info, so do I just copy my HD over to an external hard drive and recopy it back to the newly installed HDD? I am obviously a novice at this and wanna do this right. Thanks in advance for help and suggestions!

Jason is correct, those are the best tools for cloning the drive. I personnel use SuperDuper mostly because I have not tried CCC.
So coin toss between the two.
As far as the procedure you have some more things to think about.
It is much easier if you purchase an enclose that you can put your new drive into then clone your current drive to it. Take the new drive out of the enclosure and install into the Mac, boot and you are running. It's that easy.
If you already have a external drive that you wish to use for this process then it will need to be formatted to OSX Extended (journaled) using GUID partition table, which Disk Utility should default to.
Then you can use CCC or SuperDuper to clone you system to the external, then you install your new drive, plug the external back in and boot from it. Then you clone your external backup to the new drive.
Sound complicated? "maybe" but relatively easy.
We will be here if you need any help. If you want exact specifics ask and we can write is out here in this thread.

  • Restoring 1st Gen Macbook Pro.  Please help!

I have a 1st Gen, 1.83 Core Duo Macbook Pro that I'm going to sell, but before I do, I'd like to restore the laptop to it's original factory settings.
When I go to do an "Erase and Install" from my original factory disk (no scratches), everything seems to be working fine until it gets to the install screen that says "Preparing the Disk." The install process just seems to freeze at this point. I can still move my mouse and it doesn't seem "frozen," other than the fact that there is no progress in the progress bar. I've waited over an hour and still no progress. I've shut the system down and rebooted from disk but when I come to the same part, the same thing happens.
Does anyone have any insight? Thanks in advance.
*The system came installed with Tiger, but I've upgraded to Leopard, and then to Snow Leopard since.

How To Prepare a Mac For Sale
    Erasing disks securely
Start up from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and select the disk and click erase - to securely erase data click Security Options and Erase Free Space which will entirely wipe your disk, overwriting it with zeros so that no data is recoverable.

  • 1st gen macbook issues

    Hi all,
I am having some issues on my macbook.
Specs: First gen Macbook white with superdrive, 2gb ram, custom Hitachi 160gb HDD, Leopard (all latest updates installed), battery recently calibrated, SMC recently resetted, Permissions recently repaired, Disk recently verified, fragmentation (idefrag) 1.2%. 49gb hdd free.
    Issues:
The first issue I noticed was that around 20% of battery the computer just shut down without any warning, calibration and SMC reset did not solve the issue.
The second is that everything concerning audio is... crackling. Itunes (with normal mp3s) begun to reproduce files it normally easlily reproduced with sudden crackling and skipping, the thing gets worse when I am doing other things (safari, mail,...). In activity monitor CPU does not show a big load (crackles even at 5% cpu load).
Then came video reproduction audio crackling, with ALL players (DVD, QT and VLC), and frame dropping. Sometimes the video just plays very slowly and audio crackles. I have to quit the player to solve.
Then with skype, when my isight is on I cannot even hear audio, but no issues if my contact is sending me his video.
Temperature runs higher than usual, and fan goes on easily, especially when USB external HDD (and Timemachine) drives are connected.
Last but not least blue tooth sometimes just disconnects (apple keyboard and mighty mouse), some seconds before the mouse responds very slowly as if the bluetooth bandwidth was totally full.
All these issues appear both on battery and when plugged.
I cannot pinpoint a moment in which all started but with Tiger and the first releases of leopard it did not have any issues. Custom ram and HDD where installed long ago and worked fine until recently.
Do you think it may be a software problem, or I am having serious hardware issues?
I could only think of three possibilities: bugs in Leopards 10.5.2, HDD or motherboard or audio issues.
Any clue how to solve them? (I did everything: repairing permissions, verifying disk, defragmenting, freeing hdd space, Onyx maintenance). The computer works fine, and is normally responsive and fast, when not concerning audio and video playback.
Please help! I'm freaking out and I have my PhD thesis in my beloved MB... (BTW God bless Timemachine).

I need to apologize up front, I don't have a solution for you. I was actually going to post a question on the forum asking how to properly take care of my first gen macbook.
I, too, am having the battery problem you are having. It happens often when I am working with GarageBand or watching a DVD and am on battery power, there is still definitely 25-30 mins of battery left, and the thing just shuts off! I'm at at a loss as well.

  • ANY radio app for 1st gen iPod touch?? Even with Wifi!?

Firstly, I know the 1st gen ipod touch does not have a radio receiver..this is not my problem.
I've been looking for an app that I can listen to the radio on..even through wifi...but am not finding any that will work with the 1st gen. For example, I download TuneIn radio which I have on my itunes, blackberry, and tablet...but it is only compatible with newer generations of the ipod touch. I am on version 3.1.3 which I believe is the most up-to-date.
In short, I'm absolutely fine to use wifi to listen to the radio, but simply can't find an app (ideally a free one) that will even let me sync the app from my itunes to the ipod.
    Suggestions would be very welcome!

Try my web app. I have over 100 stations of all genres. Just enter the following URL in Safari and tap on the orange music icon on top right. Also, you can add a Home screen app icon for easy future access.

  • Win7 Not Installing Drivers for 1st Gen Touch

    Hello folks,
I've been trying to get my 1st Gen Touch up and running in the most recent version of iTunes, installed onto a dual-boot machine (32-bit Vista and Win7). In Vista, the Touch works perfectly. Flip over to Win7, and no dice. I can hear the chime sounding that a USB device has been plugged in and removed, but at no point does any drivers actually install, no info pop-up that new hardware detected, and no iPod listed in the USB devices of Device Manager.
I've tried following the directives of http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1852 to no effect; everything looks to be in order. I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. The only, and I mean only, sign of life I've seen out of Win7 is the one time I managed to fluke my way into Recovery Mode on the Touch, at which point it was recognized as a generic iPod in Win7. I just didn't think that a recovery wipe and reinstall would be a necessary step to a normal installation.
Further, I've also tried running the iTunes program in compatibility mode for Vista, and with Admin privileges for Win7 mode, to no effect. Does anyone have any ideas on what I'm overlooking? I know the hardware works; this has to be software...
    Thanks!

I got it working, though the steps I had to use were draconian in measure, and not what I would reasonably expect the average user to endure just to get their iPods working. Since the Touch was showing signs of life in Factory Restore mode, I let it do that once. Wiped all the data out of it, but errored on the reinstall. Curious, I thought. I had Device Manager up at the time, and saw a generic 'iPod' entry in Portable Devices.
Okay, fair enough... I restart the factory restore, wait for the generic 'iPod' entry. Right-click, Properties, 'Update Driver', search automatically. Suddenly, lo and behold, the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver shows up under USB Devices, and my Touch starts working as pretty as you please. I'm fortunate that I can go back into Vista to re-sync to get my music and apps back, but at least it's working now. Might I suggest seeing if there's a less Nuclear Option process for accomplishing the same goal?

  • Suggestions for new battery replacement for 1st gen Ipod?

    Hello all,
I recently acquired my brother's 1st gen Ipod mini. I love the thing. As with others, I think I'm having troubles with battery life. I have played songs on it for around 2 hours today. At 1.5 hours of playtime, the battery life indicator was nearly empty (NOTE: I have read this article: http://www.vsa.cape.com/~danh/ipod.htm and I understand the "lying" battery life indicator). A half hour after this, the unit shut itself off: the battery's charge had been depleted.
I have been looking at ebay and there is one company selling a battery for under 10 dollars with shipping. They seem to be fairly reputable, claiming to be a top supplier of Ipod products and that the batteries it sells are superior to the ones that originally came with the 1st gen mini Ipods. They claim the batteries they are selling are " Internal Li-Polymer Apple Mini iPod Battery
    - 600 mAh (High Capacity)
    - 3.7 V "
I have ALSO seen a replacement battery for the Ipod mini claiming the following:
    " Voltage: 3.7V 550mAh "
    Yet another claims:
...our battery which is made and tested to the highest international standard gives you a capacity of 650 mAh which is 50% more than the original Apple battery. The original Apple iPod part number is EC003. This is a brand new high-quality generic (non-OEM) battery."
My question is has anyone replaced the battery on their 1st gen mini Ipod? What voltage and mAh readings should I get for the battery I buy?
    -Phillip

Anyone correct me if i'm wrong here but AFAIK:
Ok, the main thing to look for is the 3.7v rating. the mAh refers to milli-Amp hours, i.e. the amount of charge the battery can hold, not the current it outputs.
As long as it's 3.7v, it's cool. And the bigger the mAh, the better.
    Good luck in your replacement.
