LaserJet 4050 - Tray 1 load plain letter

I get a "Tray 1 load plain letter" error every time I try to print to our HP LJ4050. It wants to pull the paper from tray 1 even though tray 2 is full. I thought it my be a problem with tray 2 so I switched the tray with one from an identical working printer but still get the same result. It doesn't seem to be a driver issue because I have the same problem when printing a configuration page or menu map from the LCD display. I verified that Tray 1 is set to FIRST and Tray 2 PLAIN. I restored the printer to factory setting but I'm still having the same problem. What could it be?
This question was solved.

I had the same problem.  Turns out that I had moved the printed and in the process of moving it, the paper tray #2 somehow shifted to legal size paper instead of standard 8x11.5 inch paper.  To fix the problem, I pulled out the paper tray, found the blue stop at the very BACK of the tray and pulled it forward into the proper position for standard paper.  This solved the problem for me.

  • HP LaserJet P2015 Tray selection and Macs

    Hi
We have a HP LaserJet P2015x. I've had trouble with it from Day 1 as it doesn't have a US Letter / A4 override option and we use A4 paper, but the odd user prints US docs without knowing it. I made some Print Presets for the users which applies the A4 scaling at the Mac end which works when the users remember to select the Preset.
In the last few weeks the printer stopped acknowlodging Tray / Media selections made in the Printer settings tabs (Mac 10.5.7 and Mac 10.5.8) I am not sure what was updated, reset, changed but after many hours re-installing drivers, changing driver, using other drivers, resetting the print system, cold reseting the printer etc... I still couldn't get it to print to our Letterhead Tray. Tray 2, set as A4, Letterhead. Regardless of the Paper Feed or Finishing > Media Type settings I made in the Driver it just kept printing from Tray 3, A4 Plain. (or would prompt for "Please load, Tray 2, A4 Plain if both Tray 2 and 3 were set as A4)
Somehow during all of this I noticed the *"Fit to Page"* option in the Driver tab for the Printer. I had it set to "Nearest Size and Scale" I changed it to *"Prompt User"* and magically it would now actually print from Tray 2, Letterhead when I made the Media Type change to "Letterhead". I have no idea why this fixed it but I made the change on 4 other Mac's and they can all now print to both trays normally again.
Hopefully this helps someone else out!!
    Matt

So, I cranked up my old PowerBook G4 (OS 10.4.11) which has the older driver for the P2015dn and the problem remains.
I have made some progress: If I want to print with paper feed from Tray 1, I pull Tray 2 out a few inches, load the paper in Tray 1, start the print job, and the yellow Attention LED flashes indicating an error. Note that the Paper Out light does NOT come on. So I press the Go button, the Attention LED goes out, and the print job completes using the forms in Tray 1 as desired.
So I'm thinking now, What Error condition? and why does clearing it make it print?
Certainly seems like a hardware problem to me as this is NOT the way the printer is supposed to work as documenetd in the User Guide.

  • Lost Printer Features Pane for HP LaserJet 4050 and Color LaserJet 4550

    Hello,
I am trying to restore the Printer Features Pane for 2 different Hewlett-Packard printers we have connected to our LAN.
The Printers Features Pane is available on several of our older iMacs but NOT several of the newest iMacs just recently installed.
After doing some reading in the discussion forum I thought this was due to an erroneous PPD file and replaced both PPD files on the new iMac (with the absent Printer Feature Pane) with the PPD files copied from the old iMac (with the correctly functioning Printer Feature Pane) . I actually copied the PPD files into both of the following locations:
    • /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj
    • /System/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj
Unfortunately this did not work even when i deleted the old printer, replaced the old PPD files with the new ones (actually replaced the new ones with the older ones from the previous iMacs on which the Printer Features Pane was working as anticipated), restarted the machine and then added the printer selecting the correct PPD file. All machines are running X.4.10
I am sure this is a simple fix that i am just overlooking but really need to get back the option of printing to the "Letterhead" tray of our printers.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mike

  • Unexpected size in Tray 1, Load A4 and press OK; 1st page of a multi page document prints fine...

Hello everybody, I have an annoying issue with a HP Laserjet Pro 100 MFP M175nw. The issue is that printing from any application and any PC platform (read Windows XP, 7 and 8.x, Mac OSX SnowLeopard and Linux) the first page is printed without a problem but the second page and the rest of the pages never get printed without intervention. The printer simply stops after printing the first page, the control panel display shows the message "Unexpected size in tray 1" "Load A4 and press OK."  pressing OK button the 2nd page is printed, for the 3rd and the nth page same procedure....  The printer is out of warranty and HP does not provide any support on this subject. Printer is using genuine HP drum and toner cartridges. This isssue came up after having printed in total approximatively 7000+ (bw & color) pages in the past 2 years. The paper size used is A4, the printer is configured to use this paper by default. To remedy the problem checked all suggestions by HP provided online and checked some Dutch (HP) forums without finding a proper solution. Followed all advice such as resetting the printer, reinstalling drivers, updated firmware, using HP doctor.., replaced and changed paper lot several times, replaced toners etc etc ect  no luck in printing whole documents without intervention. The issue is that printing from any application and any PC platform using either PCL or PS, USB or Ethernet or wireless (read Windows, Mac OSX and Linux) the first page is printed without a problem but the second page and the rest of the pages never get printed without intervention. The printer simply stops after printing the first page, continues to do something, lots of noise, displays printer cooling down or so message on the control panel and immediately afterwards the control panel display shows the message "Unexpected size in tray 1" "Load A4 and press OK."  I am no expert in hardware but I do know enough about using the PC; I guess the problem is related to hardware which is logical as all mainstream PC platforms display same behavior. I could surely carry-in the printer to a HP service center but the price they charge would urge me to spend the money on a new printer; not HP branded one that is. Any suggestions are very much appreciated. Regards,Gece Kusu

Hello, I have exactly the same problem. I could have written the same text. And I have'nt found solutions. Except, perhaps, change this printer (and quit HP?).
Any suggestions would be really much appreciated.
Thank you for your possible responses.

  • Problem installing Laserjet 4050 in Windows 7 x64, No driver in Universal Print Driver v5.0.3

I have just installed Windows 7 64Bit operating system.  I have be successful in installing several other more recent HP printers in the office.  However, my main "workhorse" printer is a HP Laserjet 4050 and I have downloaded the Universal Printer Driver v5.0.3 for Windows x64 - PCL 5 and PCL 6, and in both cases it does not find a suitable driver. The HP download site states these Universal Drivers will work, but I cannot get it to install.
Is there a driver that will work on the 4050 in Windows 7 X64?  Thanks everyone.

You're probably getting the "Windows cannot locate a suitable printer driver" error if you're trying to add the driver while adding a printer that is shared over the network. You see, HP's Universal Printer Driver (UPD) doesn't contain the PnpIDs of every printers it supports, so when you specify HP's UPD as the drivers for the network printer, if Windows can't find a match for the printer's PnpID it spits out the driver isn't compatible.
The way to overcome this is to install a "generic" printer locally, using HP's UP driver, and change the port afterwards to point to the shared printer. So, first, add a local printer (that will be using the LPT1 port - make sure no printer is attached!), and click on "Have disk(s)" to browse to and select HP's UPD. Going through the remaining steps should install a locally-attached printer named something like "HP Universal Printing PCL 5" (or "[..] PCL 6"). You'll then go in the new printer's properties, on the "Ports" tab, and click on "Add Port...". If you're installing a shared printer, you'll select "Local Port", click on "New Port..." and specify the path to the printer (e.g. \\myserver\hplaserj) as the port name. Those steps should do the trick.
Last thing: beware, though, as HP's UPD PCL 6 might not be compatible (anymore) with your LaserJet 4050, as they use a PCL XL class number/revision (class 2.1; sort of a version number of the protocol) that is higher than what your printer's firmware might support for PCL6 (should be class 2.0) I know the latest versions of HP's UPD PCL 6 doesn't work with our LJ 4000 & 4050 printers, so you might have to use the PCL5e driver for those 64-bit workstations.

  • Setup Laserjet 4050 with Parallel to USB cable on new computer (win 8.1)

I am trying to setup my old Laserjet 4050 on my new Windows 8.1 (64bit) computer.  I have gotten a parallel to USB cable and tried to download the latest drivers but the it is not identifing the printer (doesn't show up in the "printers" section of the control pannel).  Help - any suggestions as to how to get it set up would be appreciated.  I love this printer (it has worked for 6 years without a problem).

Plug the ethernet cable into the jet direct card and the other end into the router. Now turn on the printer while holding down the green button until you see cold reset in the display and release the green button. When the printer comes to ready, wait about 2 minutes and then go to the information menu on the printer and print a configuration page. You will get 2 pages with the second page being the network settings. You use the ip address it found to load the printer on the computer. You will go to add printer, next, local printer, next and at the bottom will be a create port item. Click on it and in the drop down choose standard tcp/ip printer and then follow the prompts on the screen. When you get to the makers page choose hp on the left and then any laserjet pcl5 or postscript driver and finish up and it should work. Good Luck.

  • Print to a Laserjet 4050 networked on an XP machine from my iPad

How can I print to a Laserjet 4050 networked on an XP machine from my  iPad?  Can I use the AIO app?  does not find the printer.  Thanks.

    @Mojo-Risin
If I understand your question, you would like to use the AiO remote app on your iPad with your Laserjet 4050, correct? If this is case, unfortunately, the AiO remote app is not supported with the Laserjet 4050 and the iPad.

  • HP laserjet 4050

I have a problem since last update of tiger: when I try to print via IP on the HP laserjet 4050 I get the error message:
The process "hppostprocessing" stopped unexpectedly with status 13.
Before the last update it was working perfectly. I have reinstalled the dirver from HP web site but still the problem ...
macbook pro intel duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

The 'hppostprocessing' filter is part of the OS X install. It resides in Library/Printers/HP/filter. It most likely has an issue with access rights, since the updates can reset permissions on system and library files. Try opening Disk Utility and running Repair Disk Permissions.
If that doesn't help, download the 10.4.9 Combo update for Intel and run that. The combo update can fill gaps left by the sequential updates.
If still no good, get Fixamac's Printer Setup Repair utility. This may help determine if other files that the hp file has a dependency for has a problem and maybe even repair the problem.

  • Printing on (older) HP Laserjet 4050 Series

    Hi,
a friend oh mine has a very old (pre 2004) HP Laserjet 4050, which is still going strong, but has no USB port, just parallel and Ethernet with TCP/IP and IPX/SPX (yeah).
He connected it until now on Win XP + Vista using an USB to parallel adapter cable, and it worked.
However, this does not work any more with his newly acquired Mac Book pro and SL (10.6.4). The printer will be recognized at setup and the apropriate driver (HP Laserjet 4050) will be automatically selected. But then printing (1 page Word text, 1 page Adobe Reader) will not work.
On the Mac, it will say "sending data", but there will be no indication of that on the printer, and the sending will not end after 30 minutes.
I tried to configure the printer via Ethernet/TCP/IP over a switch, with nearly the same results. But I am not sure I configured everything needed, may be I averlooked someting more special. I am familiar with configuring home networks including servers, routers, Wifi access points, printers etc.
Does anyone have any idea? Is there any special configuration trick? Do I have to use the Gutenprint driver?
This message will be posted also in HP forums.
    Thank you,
    Andre

Yes, use Gutenprint - or try Generic PCL 5 or 6.
Try installing usbtb, a substitute USB, which seems to help when using USB-parallel cables:
    http://buymelunch.org/printing/usbtb/
To help with network setup, we need more info, like is this through a router, not just a switch, and what IP address does the printer have - is it within the LAN's subnet? Are you using WiFi for internet and trying to add the printer by ethernet separately? etc.

  • HP Laserjet 4050 and Snow Leopard

We had problems printing with our new OS 10.6.5 to our HP Laserjet 4050. The following is what has solved the issue.
To get the old HP LaserJet 4050 to work with OS 10.6.5 (Snow Leopard)
Go to the website for HP printers at: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us &prodNameId=18318&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=25475&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvO ID=219
Then download and install the driver (if needed): HP LaserJet Mac OS X Installer Print Only Software Solution for v10.2, v10.3.x, v10.4.x, v10.5 7.8.0.761 28 Jan 2008
Next go to the printer and router. Look for the IP Address on each, they must match for wireless printing.
On your computer, open System Preferences > Print & Fax > Printers (Select +) > Add Printer > Address: (Enter the printer IP Address) > Name: (Name the printer as you want.) > Print Using: Click on this menu > Choose Select Printer Software > Printer Software: Scroll down to HP Laserjet 4050 - Gutenprint v5.2.3 and click on it to highlight it. > Click OK at the bottom of the menu. > Add Printer - Click on Add > Print & Fax - you now should have the printer on the list with the name given to it. > Default printer: At this menu select this printer as the default one if desired.
Now you should be able to print correctly.

I have spent months to get my HP Laserjet 5MP running with my new iMac.
The Mac kept loosing the connection to my printer, I always had to unplug it and reinstall it...
    I went nuts !
I never had problems with my old Windows laptop !
    Finally it was fairly easy:
    I am using Mac OX X 10.7.5
    I just bought a new USB-to-parallel-cable.
The Mac immediately recognized the USB cable.
After that I was able to install the printer as usual.
Maybe I need to say that I am using the latest HP driver package, so I could choose the right driver for the installation...
It is working happily ever since !
Looking back, it must have to do with the (wrong) USB cable, although I cant tell what exactly was wrong with my old cable.

  • HP Laserjet 4050 toner cartridge issue

I look after a laserjet 4050 printer for a company. They recently started using a new toner cartridge (higher quality) but they have started to have issues with black ink lines down one side of the paper. They have sent back toner cartridges (thinking them to be faulty) but cartridges are fine.
Is this a printer issue or is there an issue with the toner cartridge and the 4050 printer (not compatable)

I think I may have the solution to your problem. I do not think the toner is your problem here. From my experience i would suggest that your printer may need to be cleaned. I had a client who had a similar problem with his printer, what you should try doing is the following:
If toner specks appear on the front or back side of your print jobs, follow the procedure below to clean the paper path.
    Using the printer cleaning page
From the printer’s control panel, do the following:
Press MENU until "Print Quality Menu" appears.
Press ITEM until "Create Cleaning Page" appears.
Press SELECT to create the cleaning page.
Follow the instructions on the cleaning page to complete the cleaning process.
NOTE: In order for the cleaning page to work properly, print the page on copier grade paper (not bond or rough paper).
You might need to create a cleaning page more than once. When toner has been cleaned from inside the printer, shiny black spots will appear on the page’s black strip.
To ensure good print quality with certain types of paper, use the cleaning page every time that the print cartridge is replaced.
I am confident that your toner should print clear pages after this.

Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
Start up in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Restart as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
If you still have problems, then from the Font Book menu bar, select
              File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

  • Ibook/G3/OSX.4 (tiger) and HP LaserJet 4050 ethernet (no USB) printer

hi everyone, i spent forever on the HP site and HP phone trying to get support but got nowhere. someone gave me an HP LaserJet 4050 printer. It has a serial port, a parallel port and an ethernet cable port. I have an ibook with USB, firewire, and ethernet. i have no instructions for the printer (it's old school). i downloaded the driver from HP but nothings happening. I can't figure out how to configure this printer to work with my mac. It may be impossible. It seems to be a network printer as there is an IP address on the printer. The only way I can connect is thru the ethernet cable. Are there any work-arounds?
    Thanks,
    Amy

That printer (discontinued 2001?) may not support IPP (= Internet Printing Protocol, not IP printing). If it does it will need a queue name to work with a jetdirect card (ethernet card).
IP printing > HP jetdirect protocol is better for HP jetdirects.
To change settings on the printer, use the Classic (OS 9) HP Laserjet utility, bundled in OS 9 Laserjet driver installers, or use OS X Terminal command "telnet 192.168.x.x" (printer's IP address).

    Thanks for your help.
    [Personal Information Removed]

    Hi,
When you've replaced your ink cartridges, have you run an alignment page?  Are you using plain white paper when doing so?  The auto detect sensor in the printer is looking for "what is white?"  You might try the steps listed in this document to align the ink cartridges and use plain white paper when doing so.
