Laserjet 4200 bogs down
I have a user that prints large files to a 4200 connected locally. These files often are loaded with graphics (they are medical test results). For the first 5-6 pages it prints reasonably fast, not as fast as plain text, but good under the circumstances. After about the 6th page, though, it begins to slow down until it is going about 4 pages a minute. There is a long pause in between each page, then the page prints at a comparable speed to early, but there is this pause between each page.
I have updated the drivers (which actually seemed to make it worse), updated the firmware, increased the ram from 64 to 300+ mb, set it to the lowest res (600 dpi), changed the cable. Nothing seems to change. I realize graphics can slow things down, but this seems extreme. The user swears it wasn't like that before, which I have never witnessed.
Any ideas?

LaserJet 4200 won't collate in Windows 7 32 bit
Love my sturdy LaserJet 4200. But now that the computer is upgraded to Windows 7 32 bit, we can't get it to collate. Many computer savvy people have worked on it and no one can solve it, and unfortunately this is a pretty important issue to us. It looks like other people in this forum have collating issues and no one seems to have been able to come up with a solution.
Do we need a driver update? I don't think so, but... I have seen the recommended steps for using Windows Update to get a driver. There are many for 4200 but they all seem to have a date of 2006 (pre-Windows 7). I am currently using driver HP LaserJet 4200/4300 PCL6.
Are there any other suggestions? Or is this just a bug we have to cope with/consider getting a new printer? Thanks for any help.I had the same problem with a LJ 4200 installed on Windows 8.1.
I downloaded the Universal Print Driver for PCL5 from HP at: http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=84030&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4132.
Download the PCL5 driver (not the PCL6) and save the file to a folder where you can find it quickly.
Then:
1) Turn your printer ON (make sure it is connected to the PC) and open Control Panel in Windows;
2) Click on "Add Printer"
3) When the Add Printer window opens - do nothing until the search completes - then DO NOT select any of the printers in the "Select a Printer" box - instead, click on the prompt at the bottom of the window that says "The printer that I wanted isn't listed" - this will open a window titled "Find a Printer by other Options" - Select the last option at the bottom of this window titled "Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings" and then hit NEXT.
4) A new window opens titled "Choose a Printer Port" - select the port where you printer is connected and hit NEXT.
5) A new window opens titled "Install the Print Driver" - DO NOT chose any of the printers listed, instead click on the HAVE DISK button.
6) An "Install From Disk" window will open - at the bottom if this window where it says: "Copy Manufacturer's files from" click on BROWSE - then navigate to the folder where you save the PCL5 Driver you downloaded and click on the file name - it should highlight a file in the "File Name:" box at the bottom of the window - mine was named: hpbuio120l.inf (if not just open the folder and select the driver named: hpbuio120l.inf)
7) After you select the driver file in the step above, hit OPEN - the INSTALL FROM DISK window will open - Click on OK and the driver will install the new Printer.
Once the new printer is installed - go to Control Panel, open Devices and Printers, right click on the new Printer (make sure it is Set As Default) then from the same Right Click Menu select "Printer Properties" and scroll down to "Mopier Mode" and make sure it is disabled.
You should now be able to print collated copies from the LJ 4200 without any problem whatsoever. Good luck. -
Hp Laserjet 4200, Printer Virus or Software Failure?
Have been using a HP Laserjet 4200/4300 series, very few issues, very good printer.
Background:
Small office, this printer is attached to my computer but able to be used by 4 other machines on the network.
We are using everything from windows ME to Windows 7 xp.
What happened:
all day long we were printing & by the afternoon it just stopped. At that time only 2 computers had sent in print requests. Mine was sending Page prints of gov web sites using the latest version of mozilla firefox and I am running Windows 7 xp and the 2nd was sending Word Perfect docs and its on XP. In going through the Que, the printer says they all now have unspecified errors and will not print.
Printer/Proterties/General - print test page
Will not print
Hardware/Menu/Print test, cleaning, Menu map.. all print
Device is Working
Paper is full
Ink is in
Since then I have cleared the Que and sent several different types of things to print from all different types of programs.. the print manager say they all have errors.
So.. Printer Virus or Software Failure?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!
thank you for reading. Sorry for not being more technically savvy.
Please ask for any details.Just got off the phone with a friend (who is a lot smarter than I) and recommended turning off the printer, then truning it back on and holding down the mainuser button (the one with the check mark) and letting the printer do its thing.
just printed the test page.. so good news there. Still not sure what exactly happened.. -
Re: OSX Lion printer problems with HP Laserjet 4200
I have updated the driver for the HP LaserJet 4200 series printer to ver. 18.2. The computer communicates with the network, via a Linksys Wireless-G printserver, WPSM54G, and is sending something to the printer, but the printer prints only what appears to be identifying information, then raw code. Has anyone else had this problem? I use this OSX with three other printers, two of them wireless, with no problem.
Just found an email HP Support sent to me back in January 2008, about this issue

Printing error on Laserjet 4200 PCLXL with Adobe Reader 8.1.2
While printing on our HP LaserJet 4200 with Adobe Reader 8.1.2, here is the error printed by my printer:
PCL XL error
Subsystem: KERNEL
Error: IllegalOperatorSequence
Operator: SetPageScale
Position: 3
I use PCL6 driver and if I use the PCL5 one, I only get a portion of my 11/17 pdf. The PS driver seams to be OK. I didn't have this problem in Adobe Reeader 7.0.8. And I don't have this problem on older LaserJet printers (4000 or 4100) or newer's (4250).
With PCL 5 or Post Script, it kinda print, but Adobe Reader is not able to get the write size of paper. If I have a 8½/14 or 11/17 document, It can only print in 8½/11 correctly unless I go in printer properties and select manually the size of paper that I want to print on (or the size of the document). I can't keep that resolution because it's to difficult for most users and that they'll keep asking why their document doesn't print in the format it was built in.
Also, with PCL6, when I choose the write size of paper in the printer's properties, it prints correctly.
I tried to update the driver on our server, but the paper type of all our 4200 switched to "Etiquette" and we didn't want to pass on all our computers to reconfigure it back to "Normal paper". I also tried to update the firmware on another of our 4200s, but the problem persisted.
Can you help me to find out what's going on in Adobe Reader 8.1.2 and how I can solve that problem??Hi,
We are also struggling with the same problem after upgrading the portal to NW04s SPS15. It is consuming 2 to 3 min for opening the PDF form in ESS under Travel & Expenses.
We are also with same version of Adobe i.e.8.1.2
Still waiting for the solution,
Regards,
Venu -
HP LaserJet 4200 Printer outputting blank page (with creases) before printing
HP LaserJet 4200 Printer

The problem is intermitent , blank page with with creases before the document
Have you found a solution ?

HP LaserJet 4200 -- manual feed tray not working after 10.6 install
Hi all...
One of my users pointed this out to me. I'm looking for confirmation (or a solution)?
We have an HP LaserJet 4200 printer added to our mac clients as an IP printer. Under 10.5.8, printing to "Tray 1 (Manual)" goes where you think it would -- to the manual feed tray.
Upgrading to 10.6.1? Manual print jobs are going to the internal "Tray 3".
It's the same behavior if I use the 10.6.1 "5.3.0" printer driver or the HP Printer Update 2.1 updated "5.4.0" version.
Can anybody else confirm/deny the problem with their 4200 printer under 10.6? If you can confirm it, do you know of a fix (short of rolling back to 10.5.8).
A remove and readd of the printer did not help here. Unfortunately.
Thanks!
- SteveResolved this two ways:
1) the "gutenprint" driver worked.
2) The larger problem was the manual tray had been set to "A4" size.
I used the web admin interface to set this to "any size" and "any" type and that fixed the problem with the 5.4.0 "LaserJet 4200 Series" default printer driver...
Luckily, somebody else on campus had one of these printers and we were able to compare the printer setting differences to figure this out.
I hope this helps somebody!

Is there a way to not have photo stream photos save to my iphone? i have many shared photo streams hoping to not bog down my iphone space. but alas the photos are are being saved on my iphone.
For example. When I share a photo stream with my dad and brother and mother all the photos they are putting in the shared photo stream are taking up space on my iphone! I'll be out of space in no time at this rate.hi, this thread already deals with the issue:
How can I prevent getting calls from number that are not in my address book? -
IMac starting to really bog down
By bog down i mean that every operation has a noticeable lag time before initiating.
I have a mid-2010 iMac
3.2 GHz Intel Core i3
512 MB ATI Radeon graphic card
12 GB 1333MHz DDR3 in 4-4-2-2 formation
I'm using about 75% of my 1 TB hardrive (more than i should I know but not enough to be slowing down machine this dramatically).
The problem was most apparent initially when running Aperture and I'd be getting a lot of spinning beach balls and painfully slow processing. I rebuilt the aperture library but that didn't seem to fix the problem. The interesting thing is the activity monitor is not showing any obvious problems. Plenty of RAM available (over 8 gb), CPU is only running at about 10% on average with no noticeable spikes when trying to open a program nor any evidence of CPU Load spikes in the histogram.
The steps I've taken:
1. verified disk
2. repaired permissions
3. rebuilt aperture library
4. closed all applications and tried to open one at a time. all are slow to open.
Here is my most recent system diagnostic report from the Console. I really can't make sense of it unfortunately but was hoping some more technically literate folks out there might see something obvious that points to an identifiable problem.

From the looks of this report, it appears like on Thread 0 crashed. Unfortunately I'm not sure how to fix this.
Any help would be really appreciated. I'm kind of at my wits end here.
-RickIf you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual. If it only boots in safe mode, use that.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. They do nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to think carefully before running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(sed 's/^/ /' <<< "$o") && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PC () { o=$(grep [^[:blank:]] "$2"); PR "$1"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; PN () { [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\n%s: %s\n" "$1" $o; }; { system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType | sed '8!d;s/^ *//'; o=$(system_profiler SPDiagnosticsDataType | sed '5,6!d'); fgrep -q P <<< "$o" && o=; PR "POST"; o=$(($(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256)); o=$((o>=1024?o:0)); PN "Pageouts (MiB)"; s=( $(sar -u 1 10 | sed '$!d') ); [[ ${s[4]} -lt 90 ]] && o=$( printf 'User %s%%\t\tSystem %s%%' ${s[1]} ${s[3]} ) || o=; PR "Total CPU usage"; [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(ps acrx -o comm,ruid,%cpu | sed '2!d'); PR "Max %CPU by process (name, UID, %)"; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; PC "cron configuration" /e*/cron*; o=$(crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "User cron tasks"; PC "Global launchd configuration" /e*/lau*; PC "Per-user launchd configuration" ~/.lau*; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); PN "Restricted user files"; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist") || ID=; ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s\n\t(%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; o=$(system_profiler SPFontsDataType | egrep "Valid: N|Duplicate: Y" | wc -l); PN "Font problems"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}*; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will beautomatically copied to the Clipboard. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-Vagain. Please don't copy anything from the Terminal window. No typing is involved in this step.
Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(sed 's/^/ /' <<< "$o") && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2>&- | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
You can then quit Terminal. Please note:
☞ Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your login password when prompted.
☞ When you type your password, you won't see what you're typing.
☞ If you don’t have a password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
☞ Step 2 might not produce any output, in which case the Clipboard will be empty. Step 1 will always produce something.
☞ The commands don't change anything, and merely running them will do neither good nor harm.
☞ Remember to post the output of both steps (unless you had to skip Step 2.) It's already in the Clipboard after you complete each step. You don't have to copy it. Just paste into a reply
☞ If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of either command, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
☞ Don't post what you see in the Terminal window. The output is copied automatically to the Clipboard.
☞ Don't paste the output of Step 1 into the Terminal window. Paste it into a reply. -
Old previews bogging down hard drive backups
When I backup my hard drive to another hard drive, using Vica-Versa software, there are often lots (thousands) of older LR preview files that need to be deleted off the backup drive. With Vica-Versa the entire process just bogs down and can take forever. I have tried several other backup programs and have found no solutions. Is there a way to keep LR from creating previews at all? I know that would slow me down as I work with Lightroom, but right now I'd be willing to wait a little longer for a preview to be rebuilt than to have to deal with the incredible amounts of time it takes to backup my hard drive. Any suggestions? Thanks. Frank. [email protected]

... Thanks for the suggestion, but would I put the preview files somewhere else manually, or is there a way to set up LR so that preview files would be directed to a place other than where the main image files are located? It seems to me that I remember seeing that kind of an option somewhere, but I'm not finding it either in general preferences or in catalog settings.
Unfortunately there is no way (I know of) of telling LR where to put the preview files, they're put into a subfolder of the folder where the catalog resides (and not where the original image files are located!).

This was a wish only :-)

... The idea about simply not backing up the preview files is a good one, but I have lots of catalogs, and setting each one up to have its preview files not backed up would be quite a piece of work all in itself. ...
That's exactly the reason why I would like the option of telling LR where to put the previews. But, unfortunately, not (yet) possible.
I have excluded the previews from my backups with the following mask:

Premiere Pro CC 2014 Crashing and Bogging Down on Documentary Film Project
We have been working in Premiere on this documentary film for months.
As we reach completion it is beginning to really bog down and crash a lot.
Equipment is
iMac 27 inch 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7 Late 2013 Model
Apple Cinema HD Display
32 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB Graphics Card
1TB internal SSD Drive
We are running Premiere Pro CC 2014.0.1 and have remained there because we don't want to upgrade the software in the middle of the project.
The media is all on the external drive. It's a USB 3.0 connection. There is quite a lot of footage that we are working with.
We do have some After Effects comps that are linked in the project and we have exported the ones that are complete as QuickTimes to try to stop that from bogging us down.
Any advice on how we can manage this crashing and freezing problem would be much appreciated.
We don't have the cash to upgrade the computer and it has been working pretty well for us so far.
Here are things we have done:
Made a smaller timeline because we were working on one that was the entire movie.
Turned off the secondary monitor and unplugged it.
We are looking at moving the render cache off the external drive to a thunderbolt drive, but I'm concerned that this may take a long time.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.Splitting up the read/write items is rather a key to getting smoother operation out of PrPro. Either that or putting things on a large RAID-0/5, this sort of thing is covered over on the
Tweaker's Page ...
http://ppbm7.com/index.php/tweakers-page
And I highly recommend you take a look. Their info isn't just "we think ... " ... but the results of many many carefully crafted test sequences run on many machines with all sorts of hardware bits & pieces. You can also register, download the PBM test and run it on your own machine. It takes only a little while to do so, and with the logger app that's included and posting the results back to them, you can get a very good breakdown on where your machine is doing ok ... and where any choke points are occurring.
I think this would be good for you right now ... you need to get stuff done, not guess & try things.

Mac Mail Sent File bogging down Mail, and entire system
At Mail start up, when I go to my Sent File, it appears to be attempting to update/access the file (that shouldn't need that much updating). The small pie chart icon that shows progress next to the Sent Folder starts, but doesn't progress past the first little sliver and the rainbow pinwheel just spins and spins and spins.
It ends up bogging down and eventually locking up the whole machine.
If I leave it alone and let it spin for a while (like 5-10 minutes) it will eventually finish whatever it was trying to do but any attempts in the interim to do much of anything is futile - even a force quit is super super laggy.
This problem has only been happening for the last week or so. I can't associate it with any sort of update or activity - it seems to have just come out of thin air.
Really making using mail almost impossible. Needless to say this is putting a significant cramp in my work which is especially email heavy.
Please advise.
MacBook Pro ('08 I think)
Running 10.6.8 (have not updated due to incompatibility with critical software)
Mail Version 4.6
ThanksEric,
It worked, thanks!
What is a "rebuild"? and why did that mailbox need rebuilding (and others didn't)?
Thanks again. -
My ibook has become inefficient/bogged down
When I am browsing the web or using mail, I see at times the cursor changes to a hourglass (or its mac version i.e a circle with rainbow colour pattern) and I cannot do anything for a minute or 2 -until it returns to a normal cursor. Also, switching between mail or safari takes a lot of time, as if the apps are jammed/trying to fetch something.
when i was typing the subject line, after "inefficient/", the circle appeared and I had to wait for a minute to type "bogged down".
I believe I have installed some updates (automatic install) which might have caused this. Can someone help me restore the mac to former self? do I need to create more swap space or some such thing to alleviate the problem?
thanks
-kamalYour 3.51 GB free is marginal. It's best not to use a %, but an absolute value. Your Mac needs adequate hard drive space to operate normally. How full can a drive be before it's too full? There is no hard and fast rule that says “X” amount or “%” of free drive space is needed. A low amount of RAM requires more drive space for Virtual Memory’s swap files.
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space are discussed in this link
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html How much RAM do you have?
Here’s some general guidelines for minimum hard drive free space: As a general rule, your available space should be 5GB as an absolute minimum as it generally requires that much free space to perform an Archive and Install of Mac OS X and still preserve some free space for VM swap files.
Look at these links.

Regarding your run of Disk Utility & the error messages - Did you use Disk Utility to do the repair? Or did Disk Utility say it could not repair? If the latter, DiskWarrior can probably fix your problem. DiskWarrior by Alsoft http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html
Suggestion - Instead of using an online storge service, buy an external firewire enclosure hard drive and use it to make backups of your Mac's internal hard drive. Having a backup is very important. Currently, if you have a hard drive failure, all of your files will be lost.
I also noticed you are running Tiger version 10.4.3. You should update to the final version 10.4.11 which includes some bug fixes & improvements. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US

Bogging down with large number of photos
I have over 115,000 (give or take a few 1000) photos in iPhoto at present. I primarily use it to organize photos so I can find them, make slideshows, and hope to eventually make photo books - they're our family history for the past 7 years or so. My iPhoto library is about 155 GB.
I'm running this on the iMac - bought a couple of months ago. 4GB RAM with a 1T HD.
My main grumble is that whenever iPhoto is open, my iMac bogs down. I frequently see the spinning wheel, beach ball, or whatever it's called, particularly when I have the iPhoto to the front and it's just starting up... (plus other times).
A local Mac person thought that if I moved to Aperture, it would handle this number of photos much better... I've never much looked at Aperture before, so I'm not sure... About 2+ years ago, I had PCs and used Adobe Photoshop Elements - loved the organizer, and the level of editing power was just about right.... These days, I have next to no time for any editing except the occasional red-eye, but I can enjoy doing it on occasion (mostly swapping out backgrounds, making collages, etc).
What could I do to improve things???iPhoto is rated for 250,000 images and while you've a way to go just yet that is still a very big library.
With Libraries of that size I would expect a slowness loading or quitting, though not in normal use - viewing, organizing and so on.
You may be able to speed up launching by turning off all automatic syncing - looking for Shared Libraries, Checking with Mobile Me etc in the Preferences.
Aperture is indeed a Professional application, but I would caution that there is less value in it if you're not shooting Raw and that there is a learning curve in using it. You can download a free trial of Aperture [here|http://www.apple.com/aperture/trial>
You can have multiple libraries in iPhoto, however the downside is that you can only have one open at a time.
If you opt to go that way then to create a library: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library' and use the same keystroke to Choose between Libraries.
Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using iPhoto Library Manager

Select clob column bogs down sqldeveloper GUI
Hi,
If I select a clob field, sqldeveloper completely slows down, taking seconds (many more than usual) for any GUI even.
i.e. this bogs down sqldeveloper:
select clob_col_name
from table_containing_clob_field;
I thought this may be a memory issue (as it could be downloading the whole clob, but I did not take time to verify). However even selecting one char from the clob column makes the sqldeveloper GUI lag
i.e. even this bogs down sqldeveloper:
select substr(clob_col_name, 1, 1)
from table_containing_clob_field;
Running select '' from dual; will bring the sqldeveloper GUI back to it's normal responsiveness.
IMO this is a bug, selecting 1 char from 30 records should not slow down every GUI event in the whole application.
Should I submit a bug or does anyone want to discuss this further?
Edited by: mdaly on Jul 8, 2009 6:09 PMWhat version of the Oracle database?
- Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 - Prod
How is the CLOB column stored? Inline or out of line?
- CREATE
TABLE "STYLESHEET"
"NAME" NVARCHAR2(60) NOT NULL ENABLE,
"VER" NUMBER NOT NULL ENABLE,
"STYLESHEET" CLOB NOT NULL ENABLE,
"DATEADDED" TIMESTAMP (6) DEFAULT SYSDATE NOT NULL ENABLE,
CONSTRAINT "STYLESHEET_NAME_PK" PRIMARY KEY ("NAME")
How large are the clobs?
- ~40kB
Why are you using Substringing one character of a CLOB does not mean that the entire clob from every column must be read into memory.
- I was using substr to test if sqldeveloper behaved the same when 1 character from the clob was selected versus not using any substr function.
Surely Oracle version or the way the clob is stored should not affect how the sqldeveloper GUI responds after a resultset is returned?
