LaserJet 4MP Please Help!

My old LaserJet 4MP is printing beautifully. I have just fixed a series of malfunctions with removal of paper debris and a cold reset.
But one problem remains. After printing a document the printer no longer returns to a READY state. Instead a document name with a number prefix remains in the window. I have to do another reset to clear the document description out of the buffer. Then the printer re-starts, runs its SELF TEST and reverts to READY. While the document description remains I cannot go offline but I can continue printing other documents in the print queue until finished. Then I get a plain sheet chugging out with an error message. (see below).
According to my manual, The number prefix is not an error number, it appears to be a document counter number as it increases with each print I make. it is up to 106 now.
When offline I can run ALL print tests and come up with perfect results.
I would have thought a cold reset would fix this problem by returning the software to factory settings. Apparently not. Window simply shows:
89 Tony ANZ Lodg
I have been using the printer so the last print was:
106 Tony GreeceL
So I get a counter number, My name and a document description as far as 16 characters will allow.
Sometimes, as in the last document a second sheet prints displaying;
ERROR: timeout
OFFENDING COMMAND: timeout
STACK:
This error prints every time I printed a document. I visited all the items in the JOB MENU. I re-set JOB MENU items but no change in printer behaviour.
Normally after printing a letter the Printer switches back to the READY state. Now the document description remains in the window and can only be removed by a cold reset, I cannot go OFFLINE because the window will not clear and revert to READY. It is interesting that the reset presumably clears the buffer but even a cold reset does not change the document counter number. How does one access this data I ask?
The printer is networked via a D-Link DP-G321 WiFi print server connected via serial cable to the LaserJet 4 MP. My G5 iMac and a G4 desktop both access the print server via WiFi. I have trashed and replaced the printer drivers and print proxy preferences on both the G5 and G4 computers to ensure the glitch is not transmitted from the computers.
I assume this can be fixed via the printer onboard software. Can anyone help me fix this problem?

Anyone know if this will also work for 10.5.6? As obviously Apple has not fixed this issue yet!
I need advice on this since I cannot print from Illustrator at all ever since I reinstalled HP drivers 1.1.1 at Software Update's Recomendation.
QUOTED FROM A PREVIOUS APPLE THREAD I FOUND DATED OCTOBER '08 (as follows)
Found a great solution to this on the Adobe User Forums that involves replacing the pstops file in 10.5.5 from the one in 10.5.4. Here're the steps:
Through trial and error, it appears to be a problem in the file located at:
/usr/libexec/cups/filter/pstops
If you copy that file from a working 10.5.4 installation then it should work. At least it does for me. Your mileage may vary, I'm not responsible, etc.
The easiest (and likely safest) way to do this is to download the 10.5.4 combo update from Apple.
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1054comboupdate.html
And Pacifist:
http://www.charlessoft.com/
1) Mount the combo update DMG and open the .pkg file using Pacifist.
2) Navigate down to /usr/libexec/cups/filter/
3) click on pstops and hit "install" on the top left
4) enter your password
5) hit replace
That's it. Keep in mind I've only tested it on my main box, but I don't see why it shouldn't work for everyone else.
This likely will not break your install in case Apple comes out with a fix. If you're worried then just backup your 10.5.5 pstops file. (hit Command-G, enter /usr/libexec/cups/filter/ and copy the pstops file somewhere safe (or just rename a copy in the current location). You may have to repair your permissions.

  • Can't print bar codes on Laserjet 2840, please help?

Having installed a bar code font on to my PC I thought it would be easy  to print bar code labels for my retail shop but what prints out is just the bar code number instead.  Could someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

I don't have an answer but can suggest a couple of things. I use an old HP Laserjet 2100 with built-in ethnernet. I don't use Appletalk to print but IP printing. Your bridge must have a TCP/IP address. You might be able to use IP printing to send directly to that. Another idea is maybe you need to enable Appletalk on the MBP. By default it's disabled you can turn it on in the networking panel. You might already have that so I'm not sure if that would help. One last thing might if you have the firewall on in the sharing preferences that could be blocking it also.

  • Laserjet 1020 printer doesn't work through airport express. PLEASE help me

Hi everyone. I've just bought a laserjet 1020, and though I can perfectly "see" it through the airport admin utility, there is no way to have a page printed. Works perfectly when connect it to the laptop through usb though. I have already tried every iFelix solutions, changed drivers (HP 1022, etc.), bonjour for windows, manual configurations, etc. Is there something else out there that I didn't figure out? Please help me. I'm in one of those moments where there are no more ways left to check out in google. I will really appreciate any advice.
    Regards,
    Martin.

There are issues with regard to HP and Apples.
I take it that your Laserjet is plugged into the XP computer and that you are tryiny to print to it over a network.
    Try this:
Go to System Preferences> click on "+" to "Add Printer", at the next page click on "More printers", this should then bring up a box with the name of your network in it. It will then show the name of your Apple and that of the PC into which the LAN cable from the router is plugged, click on this PC and the next box should throw up the name of the printer, click on this, then DON"T click on ADD but on the slot with "Generic" showing, you can then scroll down the list to Laserjet, click on that and find the "Gimp" version of the driver with your printer's model number, this is the one you should ADD.
Now this may work first time, unlikely given Apple's track record of network printing foul ups; you may have it print only a 1/4 page. If this happens, try "ADDing" a driver from higher up the Laserjet range; this is what I had to do to get my Canon iP3000 to work (I use the iP8000 driver with reasonable success)
There are also CUPS+GIMP drivers in the list; with the Canon these just printed a 1/4 page of solid black, nice for the ink manufacturers, but expensive for us!
The Gimp drivers are a third party product, 2 years out of date, and for which Apple accept no responsibility.

  • HP Color Laserjet 3550 and Leopard not working!PLEASE HELP!!

Please excuse me if this has been answered, but after being on the phone for 2 hours with HP, and looking through 100 support articles I am at the point of no return when it comes to frustration.
I have an Imac that I bought 6 months ago. Today my very generous brother bought me the new Leopard. I was very excited after I installed it. It was afterall another reason to play and explore. Then I found a bug.... I am a graphic artist and I went to print out a design for a client and it would not print. No matter what I tried my Imac that was printing to my HP COLOR LASERJET 3550, less then 2 hours ago, was no longer printing. Everytime I send something to print, the printer would say "printer connection opening" then it would say "fatal error......" and pause the job again.
PLEASE HELP WHAT DO I DO!!!! I AM VERY UPSET AND VERY FRUSTRATED!!!!

I just bought my MacBook Pro last week. I have been trying off and on for 3 days to get it to print to my HP Color Laserjet 3550 through apple talk and keep getting a message: The Application Printer Proxy Quit Unexpectedly.
I tried the generic post script printer driver. I no longer got the message but it didn't print either. I am at my wits end.
I was going to upgrade my IMac to Leopard and I sure am glad I read your post. I now will not upgrade because my IMac prints just fine.
So I at least learned something here. Maybe Leopard isn't the best system yet.

  • Please help me with my old Laserjet 8000dn

When I had this printer working about a year ago, it was always a kind of delicate situation.  Sometimes it would work, sometimes not.
    I use windows xp.
I have my 8000dn hooked up to xp laptop with an ethernet cable, going through some "JetDirect" thing, I think it is called.  In any case, the green light is on on that network interface on my printer.  Pretty much, from here out, besides hooking my laptop and my printer together with that cat-5 cable, and turning the power on, I don't know what to do.  When I print out the system information from my printer, it says that the IP address of the printer is 0.0.0.0.  I know that last year, it was something like 192.168.0.90, but that is not happening this year for some reason, and I don't know what to do.
    Please help me.

  • Serial to USB connection- HP Laserjet 4MP not recognised

I am trying to connect an HP Laserjet 4MP to my Intel iMac running OSX 10.5.8. sure its old, but it is solid and reliable. Slow does not concern me.
The printer worked fine when last used. I have just purchased a serial to USB cable for the printer as the printer originally used AppleTalk.
System Profile recognises the cable. The cable chip is a Prolific 2303 which I am told is Mac compatible and that seems confirmed as System Profiler lists the USB-serial controller. So why can the OS not see the printer?
Check the HP printer drivers? Of course! So far I have downloaded and installed 2 sets of printer drivers. The first was a Laserjet and Edgline print-only.mpkg. labelled OSX. Probably too old. The second, PrinterDriverUpdate v1.1.1 (350MB) from the Apple Archive. The Archive listed the 4MP in its list of drivers contained in the package. Can’t get them to work!
I cannot get bonjour to see the HP printer! I read elsewhere that others are using the old HP 4MP on snow Leopard so Intel and system compatibility would not seem to be a problem.
I found the HP site murder to negotiate and finally downloaded from Apple and AppleUpdate. If you know the correct HP URL for Mac driver downloades that may help. So far I have run into so many dead ends on that site I could fill an A4 page with criticism.
Does anyone have suggestions which may help please?
Update. I checked the printer drivers via manual driver selection and found the HP 4 plus v2013.111 driver which worked in the past. So the driver is there, why does Bonjour not see it? I click on add printer and nothing new is found!

Helpful response as usual thank you BDAqua.
Network shows USB controller Not Connected. When I select and click window at left on USB controller (Which is red) the resulting dialogue box does not offer Apple talk. Just Modem,DNS, WINS, Proxies and PPP. Apple Talk is only offered for Ethernet or Airport.
Having had a nights sleep on this problem I conclude the serial port has died.
I think I shall return the serial cable and try connecting with a 36 pin Parallel port.
    Thank you for the thought.

  • HP Laserjet 4mp won't print with Snow Leopard

My great Laserjet 4mp prints just fine with OS 10.5.8 but not with Snow Leopard (10.6.2) on my new iMac. Have spent three plus hours with senior level Mac Techs to no avail. The printer screen shows the correct printer and driver and indicating valid connection, but when attempting to print I get the message "Unable to print, try again in 30 secs". Since 10.6 doesn't have Appletalk, am unable to use it; techs have tried to use the 4mp driver supplied with Snow Leopard and also downloaded it separately from the web site. We (they) have also tried using all methods (IP, Daemon, and HP Jet Direct using Ethernet and Serial to USB connections). Techs have talked with HP techs and have no other solutions. The security system is off. Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

I've read the threads and don't understand some, but I think we (the Apple support techs and I) have tried the ones I recognize. One new idea--in a reply to a similar post someone mentioned being sure to use additional data when using the IP address-- submask address or some such, I
haven't been told to do this--should I? (I can get it from the printer readout if told what to get.) Also, in another post someone suggested deleting the OS 10.5.8 driver that was transferred when all the data from my old iMac G5 was moved over, saying that it would interfere. If true, how do I do that?
What I really need is a stepwise instruction on which connection to use (Ethernet, Serial to USB, or parallel port are the only options); which protocol to use (IPP, Line Printer Daemon, or HP Jet Direct socket, whatever they are); what to put in the Address line (the IP address is the one used by Apple techs); what to put in the Queue line (techs said to leave it blank); what to put in Name and Location blocks, if anything; and what to put in the Print Using line (techs have unsuccessfully tried Autoselect, Generic, and the HP4mp driver selected both from the Select Printer Driver option and from the driver downloaded directly from the HP web site).
I'd be grateful for this help or even advice on where I can get it! (With this new computer I still have free telelphonic Apple tech support but they've given up.) Thanks!

  • Print to HP LaserJet 4mp via ethernet on Snow Leopard

Well, after tons of research I have ended up printing thru my OLD mac via shared printer on the network. But I would hope there is a better way. I have a Mac Pro, 10.6.3 connected to a HP LaserJet 4MP via ethernet router via RJ45 cables, works great on ALL my other equipment, even the PC but refuses to show up in Snow Leopard. I tried the standard stuff like giving it an IP address that would match my current network settings, no luck, tried Asante, no luck. I realize it's hard to support a decade old printer but what's all the GREEN CRAP about if I have to keep throwing away equipment that still works, and beautifully. Had to ditch my quad PPC unit because of adobe. Now I can't print. HP was no help, apple support is WAY too expensive since I bought my machine used and they won't sell me an apple care agreement. Anybody have any more suggestions? MIO must stand for missing instant output. ANY suggestions would be appreciated as I've tried all the ones in the discussion forums so far.

Since the 4MP is a PostScript printer, there should be any number of print servers that work with it. It might even work with your router. But it is not going to just "show up" on your computer like it did with AppleTalk. You will need to provide the computer with all the information it needs for an IP connection.
You can get help with that here, but you need to provide information, like the model of the router.

  • Can't connect to HP Laserjet 4mp

I'm in desperate need of some help and hadn't found any reference to this question in the forums.
I have a Macbook Pro running 10.6.4 connected to a D-link DI 604 router which is connected to an HP Laserjet 4MP printer. Ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard I haven't been able to print. I keep getting a "Can't connect to printer message".
I've tried deleting the printer and reinstalling it, but to no avail.
I do have an older Imac on the network running 10.3.9 which has no problem printing.
Anyone have any idea what the problem might be ?

My guess is your 4mp is connected to the older computer using Appletalk. Appletalk was removed from the MacOS as of Snow Leopard.
Two things I can think of to try.
    1) Share the printer via bonjour using the 10.3.9 machine as a print server.
    2) If you have an HP jetdirect or similar interface on the printer, use IP printing. You may need to set an ip address for the printer to do so.
    3) assign an IP address and use IP printing using your router; I'm not familiar with the D-Link so I'm not sure if this is an option or not

  • Trouble with the printer PLEASE HELP!!!!

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help me. I work at an elementary school and I was recently trying to set up one of our iMac computers with a new printer. The printer is a HP LaserJet 1320. I installed all of the drivers from the disk into the computer and it told me that I had to set up the printer in the "Desktop Printer Utilities" file. When I went to do that I found that there was no such file in the system. I was wondering if there was a way of getting the printer to work. And if so I need detailed instructions so that I can set up the printer properly for the teacher. PLEASE HELP
    Thank you very much!

    Hi, wacko179 -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
I believe they are referring to Desktop Printer Utility, which is a program, not a file. It is one of the standard OS 9 utility programs installed by default. Try doing a search on your hard drive for it - note that the spelling of its name is a bit different than the one you gave.
If it is indeed missing, you can use the utility TomeViewer to extract (expand) any files you want from an Installation Tome on an OS 9.x Install CD or download disk image, without running the installer.
    How to use TomeViewer
The item Desktop Printer Utility can be found in the Installation Tome located here on an OS 9.0.x Install CD - (CD) >> Software Installers >> System Software >> Mac OS 9 >> Installation Tome.
Note that this requires the use of an original OS 9 disk named Software Install, or a retail OS 9.0 or 9.0.4 Install CD.
