Laserjet 5000n on 10.4.11

I am new to Macs, though very conversant with PCs.  At work I find an oldish Mac Pro, intel processor 2 x 2.66, 10GB memory and running OS X 10.4.11.  There is an HP Laserjet 5000n attaached which has 68MB memory.  Wired connection to network
Printing a single page of a pdf takes about 10-15 mins.  The same page prints out in under a minute on an Epson Stylus Photo R800
I have tried looking for an updated printer driver and there is one from HP.  When I install it, the installed driver version does not change, although it appears to have gone through the full cycle.
I am not sure what the significance of appletalk is as opposed to "printing over ip."  If I instal the printer to hp jetdirect nothing happens and if i point my browser at the ip address all i get is a message saying "Mac OS is not supported to run this application."  The printer is currently connected theough appletalk.
Can anyone help.  I should add that I added 8Gb of memory to the computer and 64MB to the printer, and both are recognised, but neither made any difference to the speed.
Will updating the OS improve the speed of printing?
IS there something specific about the laserjet.
I'm working for a not-for-profit organisation and there is no immediate budget for large scale upgrade and the equipment is otherwise quite satisfactory for preparing pdfs for printing commerically off site, using Adobe CS.

I had this setup before with a Mac mini Macos 10.6, but since i have a new Mac mini (2013) running Mavericks i do not see the printerdriver in Print & Scan. After clicking the [+] i can't 'Add' since it is not active (light grey). I'v downloaded 'HPPrinterDriver2.16.1.dmg' and installed it, but no change ..
    Any help?
    Best,

  • I just bought an HP Laserjet 5000N to make printing plates. I don't know how to connect it.

I just bought an HP Laserjet 5000N to make printing plates.  A friend bought the HP 5000 and used a parallel to UBS cable to connect directly to her printer but she thinks her cable is interferring with running her jobs (too slow a memory).  I don't actually know what the Jetdirect 610 card does.  Can I connect through this ethernet port directly to my laptop, or do I use the serial side, or do I need to go through a router?  Any advice?

If your computer is connected to the internet, and you  connect the printer to the computer the printer is connected, if that is what you are asking.
The parellel cable is slow to transmit data.  It is an older technology.  Still works and is okay for type and  large documents where the information load is low.  Photoshop files are large and it cannot handle higher information loads well, so keep the files small.
The serial cable may have been upgraded to handle more information, as opposed to the parellel, so I would check at a computer supply store that carries cables.
To connect wirelessly we use the Jet Direct card.  It has an ethernet connection that can plug into your modem which is plugged into your computer to access the internet.  You still have to pay an internet provider. If your room has wireless internet you can get a wireless modem which will pick up the signal.  You plug an ethernet cable from the Jet Direct card to the wireless modem, then use the IP number from the printer to set up the driver in your computer which then allows you to print.  The Jet Direct card is just a chip board thing which just plugs into the computer at the back.  See installation instructions for that but it is really easy.  It is about $35 from feed roller.com for a used one, and worth it.  It runs faster then the parellel cable without stalling out ie can handle more data.
You can get the IP number by plugging in the computer and hit menu then configuration.  You don't need it to print directly from the computer using the serial or parallel cables.  The other thing to check from the configuration page is the amount of memory.  I upgraded to about 44 MBytes and the school one is 72 Mbytes.  More memory helps.  New technology uses more information.  Again, an easy upgrade if you are using Photoshop. The memory chips were $10-15 dollars from feedroller.

We upgraded the driver to the current OS 10.8.  It was not the original driver, but once we upgraded to that operating system, the print out was screwing up, so upgrade solved that.  Follow the directions on the link.  It is  easy to do.

  • OS 10.6.1 Printing to an HP LaserJet 5000n

Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard a few weeks ago, I've been unable to print to my LaserJet 5000n printer. Drivers seem to be unavailable, although the initial compatibility charts indicated that it shouldn't be a problem. Nothing shows up in the printer setup dialog or when I go to add printer. I'm hoping someone has a solution other than buy a new printer. Networking is fine and i'm able to print from my other Mac (G5 running 10.4.11) on same network. Everything was working fine prior to the 10,6.1 upgrade. HP says there are no drivers available yet. Apple says they are. Anyone else with similar problem?

I had a similar problem with a wireless/network HP Photosmart C4380, but now it's fixed.
I read elsewhere that Snow Leopard now includes drivers for printers and scanners. Having therefore uninstalled HP software I printed again. Initially I was told there were no printers, then there was a list of 'nearby printers', which includes Bonjour and networked printers. Having selected my printer I had to again download a driver, but it then worked.
If you then look in Print Preferences, there is now a 'Scan Preferences' button, which worked (although not as well as the HP software). There also seems to be the option to retain some HP software, even though I thought I'd deleted it so it must be fully incorporated in Snow Leopard.
    Good luck !

  • MacPro. OS X 10.6.7. - connectivity to HP Laserjet 5000N

    Hi,
    I used to have a HP4MV printer to print b&w 11x17 documents on OS X 10.5.8.
Now, with 10.6.7, that printer is not supported anymore, and also Appletalk doesn't work anymore.
How would I use a HP Laserjet 5000N within an Ethernet network (MacPro plus a MacBook)? Are my Macs "smart" enough to automatically recognize the printer on an Ethernet network? Or do I have to use a serial to USB adapter in order to make the printer work?
    I haven't bought the HP 5000N yet (it's a refurbished model).
    Thanks!

I continue to use AppleTalk printers by having an iBook running 10.4 on my home Network and Sharing Printers. The printers are connected to the network  using AppleTalk-over-Ethernet and a farallon converter box to AppleTalk/LocalTalk. The more modern Macs can only see these printers through the iBook "host".
You can talk to many more modern Ethernet printers directly, just by cabling them up. There are two classes.
"Smart" printers use a Postscript or PCL driver, and the computer specifies the fonts and sends the characters. These work great with an Ethernet printer attached to a port on your Router (or in some cases, wireless).
"Dumb" printers use a monolithic driver that does all the rasterization on the Mac, and send the huge stream of bits to the printer. As long as there IS a driver for the Mac, these will work as well. Most USB printers work this way as well.
Remember that the original LaserWriter -- the machine that really put the Macintosh on the Map -- was a Network Printer. So YES, the Mac does Network Printers.

  • HP Laserjet 5000N problems

I am new Mac user having just purchased a Mac Pro computer. I have been using a very reliable and healthy 9 year old HP Laser Jet 5000N with my old PC. Connection via IP and LAN router. No problems for many years.
Not successful with connecting to new MAC. I have done the following:
    - loaded latest HP MAC driver updates
    - tried connecting via IP address and router ( computer sees Printer and correct IP Address) when trying to print the following one line of text is always printed "" % ! PS - Adobe - 3.0 Query userdict (\004) cvn { } put %%?BeginFeatureQuery: *HPOption_Tra ""
    - I have read that sometimes the router can cause problesm so have also tried to connect to Printer Directly by passing the router
The Printer is OLD and does not have a USB port so I bought a Parralle to USB convertor cable with MAC software to try out. The computer sees the Printer both with the JetDirect connection and the LPD with correct IP. The printer again prints only the above text line and thats all.
As the Driver is suppose to be the latest from HP for MAC I and now lost. I do not want to replace this excellent printer but I am having to use old PC to do my printing which is NG.
    Help.
    SJ

What you are seeing printed is postscript code.
You didn't go into details of how you Added the printer in Print & fax, so I assume you used IP > LPD. That would probably work, if you used the correct queue name (ps or auto, I think). But to get the best result, use IP > HP Jetdirect (no queue name used with this protocol).
I haven't seen that printer - does it have an optional postscript card that is missing?
Experiment with the Gutenprint driver, or generic postscript or generic PCL 5 or 6.
It is Extremely Rare for a router to cause this kind of problem.

  • HP LaserJet 5000N Network Install

I have a small temporary network established while we build-out our permanent facility. We are sharing an internet connection through a Cisco Firewall, and all the desktops are currently using DHCP, from that Cisco router, to establish a network ID and the connection to the internet. I have a few small printers that are shared over a simple "Workgroup" share, but need/want to install this JaserJet 5000 as an actual network printer due to its location within the network. I have given the 5000 a specified IP using the same scheme (192.168.100.xx) as the other machines show they are getting from the DHCP, including the SM and GW. However, I cannot ping the printer, nor install it correctly to get a successful test print or normal print. HELP! As a further note, I have a KIP 3200 that I also am having the exact same issue. I KNOW that the cable connections are being made to my switch, as I have tested the connections. I really don't want to have to install my DC on this temporary network. Please help. Thanks!

Is the IP address given to the printer within the DHCP range (what is that range?).  If so, try issuing the printer an IP outside the DHCP range.

  • Leopard printing problems with HP Laserjet 5000

Hi to anyone who might be able to help.
I've just installed Leopard, and now my HP 5000 Laserjet (hooked up via ethernet) will not print. When I print, the computer says it is printing, but the printer never prints anything, and even though the printer shows up in the print window, the computer never actually finds the printer. I have downloaded the latest driver from the HP web site, which hasn't helped at all....
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Angus

    Hi Gus1,
Since it's hooked up via Ethernet, I assume then it's a 5000N? We have one of those and it works just fine in Leopard. So there must be something wrong in your setup. Two things you can try.
    1) It's an old, kind of slow protocol, but it works. Turn on AppleTalk. It's in the System Preferences under the Network tab. Choose "Ethernet" in the left pane. Click the "Advanced" button. Click on the AppleTalk tab and turn on the check box for "Make AppleTalk Active". Choose "Print & Fax" in the System Preferences and remove any entries for the 5000. Click the Add button and then the Default button. The 5000 should show up and show AppleTalk as its connection. Choose it and click Add.
    2) On the printer. Press the Menu button to the right once so the display reads, "Information Menu". Press the Item button twice to the right so the display reads, "Print Configuration". Press the Select button. The printer will kick out two sheets. On the first page under the "Printer Information" heading is the IP address for your printer. It's the second entry from the bottom labeled, "HP JetSend Address: ip: 192.168.5.6 (your actual address will of course be different).
In the "Print & Fax" heading of the System Preferences, remove any entries for the 5000. Click the Add button and then the IP button. Under the Protocol pull down menu, choose "HP Jet Direct - Socket". Under "Address:", enter the IP address on your printout, like my example of 192.168.5.6. Under "Name:", put in something meaningful, like "HP LaserJet 5000N". Assuming you have the PPD installed, then under "Print Using:' choose "HP LaserJet 5000 Series". Click the Add button.

  • LaserJet 5000 support in Windows 7 64 bit at 1200 DPI?

    Hi,
We are still using our LaserJet 5000n as the workhorse of our practice for producing half-size architectural drawings.  We have gone to Windows 7 64 bit and are not able to find a driver that will allow us to print at 1200 dpi.  We have used the universal driver to print 11x17 but the maximum 600 dpi just doesn't cut it.  Not only is the resolution lower, but the tones are completely different than on the XP machines which use an actuall 5000 driver.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Steve

Try the following: on the Windows 7 machine go to the Devices and Printers folder, Add a Printer, Local Printer, Create a Port, Local Port, \\Computername\Printername (use the actual share name for the computer and printer), OK, then click on Windows Update and then select the appropriate driver.

  • Connecting HP Laserjet 500N using ethernet cable and router

I had my HP Laserjet 5000N connected to my wireless router via ethernet cable. It worked fine. But then I changed routers and can't remember how to reestablish the connect.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

    no problems.
There is a priority order when multiple networking interfaces are available.
Ethernet is higher than Airport in the order.
If both ethernet and Airport interfaces are connected to the network, then ethernet becomes the primary networking interface.
If nothing is plugged into the ethernet port, then Airport will get control.

  • How do I connect my HP TouchSmart 600 to my HP 5000N printer

Hello;  I am a navis at this and am not extremely  technical.....but I have two printers.....HP LaserJet 5000N and HP 2840 Color LaserJet Printer.  I also have a HP TouchSmart 600 desktop computer.  I am trying to connect the 5000N printer to the desktop.  Where do I start? Can I connect the two directly with wiring and/or cables.....or do I need some other piece of hardware? Help???!!!

The IQ506 does NOT have a video output, you will need to go to other aftermarket sources for a USB to "whatever video your TV needs" adapter.

  • Can't print more than one job at a time.

I am trying to print to either a HP DesignJet 1055cm plotter or a HP LaserJet 5000N. I can't send more than one file at a time. If i don't wait until the current job starts printing, the next one won't print. For example if I sent five files one right after the other, I might get 1, 4 and 5. I don't think it's a printer problem because it happens on two different printers, and it doesn't happen when I print from my PC. Any idea what could cause this?

My work around is to put all the jobs "on hold" in the print settings or just "stop jobs" on the printer window.
Then I click on each print job in the que and let them print one at a time. This way I can at least quit the program and move onto the next thing.

  • Os10.8 does not recognize hp 4000 printer

My iMac with OS 10.8.4 does not recognize my HP LaserJet 4000tn on my ethernet network.  I have downloaded Apple's latest version of HP printer drivers 2.14. Have been on the phone with tech support-not helpful.  Have tried to connect with USB cable...no diffence.  Entered the IP address and found the printer on the pull down but received the message "Unable to verify the printer on your network."  I would really like to continue to use this printer with my new computer.  Is there a solution?

Just to add more detailed info on hooking it up via Ethernet. This is for a 5000N, so the finding and printing out the IP address of the printer may be a bit different, but otherwise should work the same.
    1) At the printer. Press the Menu button to the right once so the display reads, "Information Menu". Press the Item button twice to the right so the display reads, "Print Configuration". Press the Select button. The printer will kick out two sheets. On the first page under the "Printer Information" heading is the IP address for your printer. • How do I change about this Mac to reflect my new iMac info and not my old G4 info?

After loading Lion and finding out that none of my software is compatible with it, I reloaded Snow Leopard from the Mac OS X Install DVD. I then migrated my software and files from my old G4 Power PC. When I go to About this Mac, it is showing the profile for the G4 not for my iMac. How can I change this? I am also not able to print to my HP Laserjet 5000N. Was able to yesterday and can't today and I can't figure out why. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Now that you are back to using SL you should begin on a strategy to update your software. Eventually you will need to do it anyway so do it as time and finances allow. Then when you're ready to upgrade the OS you're more prepared.
The apps that will work in Lion are Intel & Universal apps, what doesn't work as you know are PPC (Power PC) based apps. You can tell what each app is by running System Profiler (Applications - Utilities - System Profiler) then click Applications on the left and finally look in the Kind column. The Kind column will clearly indicate if an app is Intel, Universal or PPC. Once you have identified the PPC apps then you can start your plans. Some upgrades may be simple and free some may be more painful.
