Laserwriter 300

Is it possible to use my old Personal Laserwriter 300 with a Mac Mini (OS 10.4)? I have an EtherMac iPrint Adapter LT which makes it possible to physically connect the printer to the computer. I found some print drivers on the Apple site that appear to be appropriate when I run the Mac Mini on OS 9, but so far I have not been able to make it work. I am new to OS 10, so that may be my problem.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4)

OS X 10.4 doesn't support AppleTalk. IF your Adapter cannot use TCP/IP for Ethernet this might be the problem.

As you have checked resolved you will not find much help here perhaps

  • Personal LaserWriter 300, printer sharing

I have a Personal Laserwriter 300 connected with a serial cord to the printer port of a Power Macintosh G3 desktop, running OS 8.0. I am trying to share this printer over a network with my Power Macintosh G4 (AGP Graphics), running OS 9.2.2. Appletalk is active, and file sharing works fine because both macs are networked with ethernet cords to a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. I have designated the LaserWriter 300 as a shared printer in the G3 chooser. Both macs have the LaserWriter 300 extension and Printer Share extension installed.
When I go to the G4, the shared printer icon appears in the list of printers available in the Chooser. I select it, and then try to print a document. A window pops up that says "spooling page 1", and it looks like it is working fine. Until suddently, a message pops up that says something like "you cannot print to this shared printer, please install the printer share extension and try again..." I'm confused, though, because I already have the printer share extension installed on both macs.
Thanks for any help anyone may have.

After a little experimentation, I found a workaround.
In the G4 (OS 9.2.2) Extensions Manager, I disabled the following items:
. USB Printer Sharing (Control Panel)
    . USB Device Extension
    . USB Printer Sharing Extension
Then I trashed the LaserWriter 300 desktop icon and restarted the computer. After restart, I went to the chooser and selected the LaserWriter 300 again so new icon appears on the desktop. Tried printing and it worked!
I tried a couple items to make sure this was consistent... SimpleText "read me" documents work fine. I can print from my browser too.
The only problem is with PDF files using Acrobat Reader... a message pops up on the G3 saying: "Not enough memory to print this document. Quit other applications and try printing again."
Also, not sure I want to permanently sacrifice turning off the USB printer sharing control panel/extensions listed above.

  • Personal LaserWriter 300 and Macintosh SE

I have a Personal Laserwriter 300 and a Macintosh SE running system 6.0.8. After installing all the correct software, selecting the right settings (i think), and clicking print i get the message "There is a problem with the Printer. Check to make sure..." etc. But i know everything works (at least, the hardware) because I am able to plug the laserwriter into my beige g3 (os 9.2.2), enable printer sharing, network the G3 and SE using phonenet (or whatever they are) adapters, and print fine from the SE. It works over the network, but not when the printer is hooked directly to the SE. Would anybody know how to fix this? Maybe I am doing something wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The serial ports on a Mac can be used for two similar serial protocols. One is "serial", just what you would expect it to be. The other was originally called AppleTalk, but AppleTalk was greatly expanded when Ethernet came on the scene, so Apple tries to refer to it as LocalTalk, but they do not want to re-write the manuals from 1985, so the unambiguous way is to call it AppleTalk/LocalTalk.
According to the AppleSpec on the Personal LaserWriter 300, it is a serial-only printer, not an AppleTalk/Localtalk printer:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=112495
If you turn on Appletalk on the port the printer is using, I expect it will not work any more. AppleTalk/LocalTalk speed is 240,000 bits/sec, and I expect if you try to use PhoneNet cubes to connect to it, it will not work any more, because they are tuned to run best at a higher speed. There are around five different cables that end in a Mini-DIN-8 connector. The Apple System/Peripheral-8 cable, Part Number M0187 is the one you want. A modem cable will not be wired correctly.
Are you using the same cables each time? could you have a bad cable?

  • LaserWriter 300, OS 8 and Priority Number

I am trying to connect a LaserWriter 300 to an old Performa running OS 8. I had previously used Color Stylewriters 2400 and 2500. I disconnected the Stylewriter and set up the LaserWriter according to the manual instructions. When I opened the Chooser, an icon for appeared for the Personal LaserWriter SC, which I assume is a different printer. The printer/modem port option did not appear when I selected the LaserWriter in the Chooser. I currently have it connected to the printer port. Anyway, since the icon appeared, I tried to troubleshoot by printing a document and got the following message: "No Personal LaserWriter SC is available. Check that the printer is propertly connected and switched on (it was) and make sure its priority number does not conflict with other SCSI devices." Does anyone know how to address this problem? What's a priority number?
Performa   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier   CD-ROM

According to this article, you need the LaserWriter 300/LS driver version 1.2 (and there is a link to it):
30154--LaserWriter Printers: Mac OS Print Drivers and Cable Matrix
The LaserWriter SC connects via the SCSI Bus, so its ID number is important to know, but not for your situation.

  • Laserwriter Pro 600 or laserwriter 300 personal

I have a friend who just bought an intel iMac.
she has 2 old printers, one is a Personal Laserwriter 300 the other is a
Laserwriter Pro 600. she has lots of ink for the Pro.
she also has an Asante'Talk adapter (is this called an ethernet bridge???)
not sure , you plug the serial in one side then the ethernet cable comes out the other side.
I plugged it in but then did not know where to go from there!!!
Can anyone tell me if either of these will work or if I am barking up the wrong tree.
    thanks laura

Ask your friend for more help with which printer was plugged in with the adapter.
The Personal Laserwriter 300 is a serial-only QuickDraw printer. It is not supported directly by Mac OS X, even if you solve the cabling problems. there are third party drivers that can support it in a generic way.
The LaserWriter Pro 600 is a Postscript level 2 printer, directly supported by Mac OS X LaserWriter driver. It has an Appletalk/LocalTalk Interface.
The Asanté AsantéTalk is a converter or Bridge from AppleTalk-over-Ethernet to AppleTalk/Localtalk. It could work with the 600. But it is cranky about re-acquiring devices that have dropped out for any reason.
Be sure AppleTalk is turned on in your Mac, in the Preferences > Network > Built-In (or other) Ethernet Pane, center button is AppleTalk.
Make sure the Printer and everything is on and ready, then cycle off the power to the AsantéTalk and count to ten. Turn it back on and open the Preferences >Print & Fax > Set Up Printers > and choose AppleTalk as the method. You have no zones. Your printer should appear.
Do you have all the cables, ending with a Mini DIN-8 (round) plug for the printer?

  • Using Personal LaserWriter 300 w/eMac, OS X 2

Did anyone ever come up with a driver to allow a PLW 300 to work with Mac OS X? Along with the appropriate serial to USB adapter, I'm assuming. My one last query before I bite the bullet and buy a cheap Brother model, I guess....thanks for any help...

    Cave Man,
I have not. If UkiSnuki checks back in they may have more details. They are creating a pdf file in OS X and then apparently printing in 9.2.2 on a dual G4.
My tendency would be to use WoodPlane's approach of using ethernet to get the file to an older Mac since I have more machines than sense. Ethernet solves so many problems that I just keep old Macs around as dedicated task machines on the LAN.
I have yet to test several LW 300s just because they are not plug and play to the mini. Sorry that I do not have a quick fix for you.

  • Personal Laserwriter under System 7

I have a friend using an old Mac II ci (or cx - can't remember) under System 7 with the "tune up" applied. Her Personal Laserwriter ntx died and we bought a pristeen Personal Laserwriter LS. Trouble is, we don't have the System 7 printing tools disks any more. The printer came with System 6.4 disks that recognize they cannot be used with System 7. I downloaded the latest Personal Laserwriter 300 1.21 driver and it works fine on my System 9.22 Wallstreet. But, when we use that printer extension under System 7 and try to select the printer in the chooser, we get the error that the chooser is too old for that driver.
Anyone have a clue as to the least invasive way to get this working? She is happy with the computer and printer and does not have the money to upgrade.
    Thanks,
    Mike

Try using version 7.3 of the Chooser if you're using an older version.

  • Personal Laserwriter LS and 6.0.8

I'm trying to set up a Pers. LW LS using 6.0.8 and the Laserwriter 300 driver, but I get a message telling me that the Laserwriter 300 driver needs a later Chooser. Any recommendations on where to find a Chooser that will work w/ 6.0.8 and the LW 300 driver? Or, where to find the original Personal LaserWriter LS driver that will work w/ 6.0.8 without changing the Chooser? Or, any other configuration that will work?
    Many thanks,
    -Andy

OK, good suggestion -- followed the install instructions for the GrayShare update -- used the Font DA Mover to install the new Chooser, dragged and dropped the included Laserwriter 300 driver and PrinterShare INIT into the System Folder. Now when I select the Laserwriter 300 icon in the Chooser, all seems great. Connected to the printer serial port, etc. etc.
Except now, I try to print, and it insists that the printer is not connected to the computer. I swear that the printer is connected to the port selected in the Chooser, that it's on, etc. I know that the port works and the printer works because I got everything to work under System 7.5.5 (it was dog slow on the Plus as you might imagine, but it printed fine). I've power cycled the printer, rebooted the Plus -- can't get the computer to see the printer.
    Any ideas?

  • Personal LaserWriter 320 print margin issues

I just got a Personal LaserWriter 320 (which goes nicely with my Beige G3 running OS 9.2.1) I had been using a LaserWriter 300, and figured I could print documents pretty much the same - only to discover an amazing problem:
When I choose a letter-sized document, margins can be set to within .25 inch of the edge of the page, and it works. But when I try to print the very same document on legal-sized paper, margins must be .8 inch or even more! I can't figure out how to override this - is there such thing as a fix for this? Thanks!

Which laserwriter driver and what version are you using? It shows up in Page Setup near the upper right corner of the box, or you can find the Chooser Extension in the extensions folder and do a getInfo on it to reveal its version.

  • How can I get OS X to print to LaserWriter 300L?

Desktop G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   If I can get it to print OS 9 files I'd be very pleased

Do you mean a Personal Laserwriter 300?
If so, you won't be able to print to that because it uses the Quickdraw imaging system, which is unsupported in OS X, including no drivers from third parties.

  • Laserwriter NTR will it work with Tiger or Windows

I would like to donate my working Personal Laserwriter NTR to an organization, but since I'm not a Windows user I don't know if the printer would work on a Windows machine or if it can be configured to work in Mac OS 10.4. I do have the Asante-Talk device for the printer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

These printers are QuickDraw-only printers, do not use AppleTalk, and cannot be "recognized" or "identified" in the usual way. If you cannot get one of these to print by just sending data to it, it will not be useable under Mac OS X.

Since I upgraded to system 10.4.7 I have experienced frequent crashes. Thanks to DisK Warrior I have been able to recuperate, but crashes are happening with some regularity (every week at least once). I can't figure out the reason.

Start with http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html, assuming that you're talking about system crashes. If it's application crashes, then launch Console, click on the Log List, and select ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/, that's where application crash reports are stored.
I did notice some ATS-type comments which might indicate a font conclict. Launch Font Book, select all fonts from the left-hand pane, click in the Font pane, select all, and then select validate fonts from the File menu. Resolve any errors or warnings.

  • Hp cp1160 deskjet printer won't print from Mac OS 9

    Hello,
I am running OS 9.2.2 on my Mac and I can't seem to print to my HP CP1160 inkjet printer.
It is connected using USB. My other USB devices work fine. In fact in the Apple System profiler, I can see the CP1160 printer listed as being connected and it also appears in the chooser. So it appears to be OK. Unfortunately however, it does not print.
I am using the correct driver for OS9. It is called: "hp deskjet v5.4" installed by the "OS 8-9.x-Classic installer".
Now when I go to print it does not print and the file sent to the printer appears in the print spool window for just a few seconds and then disappears.
    Then this error message appears:
document "nameofdocument" failed to print on the printer "cp1160" because of an error. -28
followed by the choices: cancel job, hold job or try again
And when using the test feature of the hp inkjet utility this error message appears:
"There was a communication error, make sure the printer is connected and turned on."
    Why will it not print?
What should be my next troubleshooting step?
    Thank you for any suggestions,
PS It is interesting to note that this printer works fine in OS10.1 on the same computer and it also works with OS 10.4 on another computer. The computer that has this print problem has both OS 10.1 and OS 9 on it. It prints fine from OS 10.1 but not from 9. I installed the appropriate driver for OS 10.1 and it works fine and I installed the appropriate driver for OS9 and it is this OS9 driver that does not seem to want to enable the printer to print. Thank you for any suggestions.
    Specs:
Computer model: 233 MHz G3 beige with ratoc USB/firewire card.
    OS: 9.2.2.

I tried all of these suggestions but none were successful. I suppose my third party card (Ratoc USB/Firewire card) is just not compatible with my printer. Thats too bad. I guess the only way I can print with this printer is to boot up in OSX. That works. I wish I could print from OS9 too however. Thanks again Kenichi for your good suggestions It was a good try.
For the record, here were the extensions I disabled (and re-booted after disabling each one at a time):
    Desktop Printer Spooler
    Desktop Print Monitor
    Print Monitor
    Printing Lib
    Printer Share
    USB Printer Sharing
    Desktop Printer Menu
    color SW 1500
    color SW 2500
    color SW Pro
    CSW 6000 series
    Imagewriter
    Laserwriter 300/LS
    Laserwriter 8
therefore these extensions do not conflict with my cp1160 - it must be something else - perhaps my third party USB card (Ratoc USB/Firewire card).

  • Where can I get a paper tray for LW 4/600 PS printer?

My boss has a LW 4/600 PS printer, which has been very reliable. The paper tray broke, however, and he would like to repolace it. Does anyone either have or know where I can find a new or used replacement paper tray to purchase for this printer?

There are many printers that use the same marking engine, and often that means the trays are compatible:
    http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/reference/pcr/engine/777
The laserwriter 300 cannot be used in Mac OS X, so you may find them at yard sales and flea markets. You can also post on the forums on that web site and arrange to purchase used parts from their printer junkyard.

  • Personal LW LS Prep 1.0

Does anyone know where I can get the Personal LW LS Prep version 1.0 file? I'm trying to use a Personal LaserWriter 300 with a Macintosh SE running system 6.0.8. I've already installed the GreyShare 1.0 update (or whatever it's called). According to another post in here, that's the file i'll need to use this printer with this OS. I've looked everywhere for this file. Any help would be greatly appriciated. I've been trying to get this working for well over a year now.
    Justin

Yes, I've tried that page before. I ended up just hooking up the printer to my PowerMac G3 beige (running os 10.3.9/9.2.2), and booted up to os 9. I then set up the localtalk/appletalk network with phonenet adapters. Though I did need to download the ADSP file from under "Network and Communications" from the old software download page and install it onto the Mac SE before it would work. I'm still not able to print with the printer hooked up directly to the Mac SE. I guess that will work good enough, since the computers are in the same room, just 4 feet apart from eachother. Thank you for you're help.
