Laserwriter 320 driver

Does anyone know where I can get the driver software for my Personal Laserwriter 320 to run on Mac OS 8.5.1? I have a StarMax 4200.
Thanks!

LW300 is a completely different stand-alone driver. It cannot be used for your printer.
LaserWriter 8 should be in the Extensions Folder, where the Chooser can find it.
LaserWriter 8 is built differently from all previous versions. It can service almost every LaserWriter ever made. All it needs to talk to your Personal LaserWriter 320 is a small configuration file. This will usually be found in a Folder inside the Extensions folder named "Printer Extensions". The configuration file for your printer is probably named "LaserWriter Personal 320". Do not move this file out of the Printer descriptions folder -- it only a customization file, not a complete Driver, and LaserWriter 8 will not find it if you move it from its expected location.
Once you select a LaserWriter 8 Extension in the left panel of the Chooser, your printer's name should appear in the right panel of the Chooser -- provided it is properly cabled and powered on and can be found by AppleTalk/LocalTalk. The name presented will be the name provided by your Printer, but without an Icon because laserWriter 8 does not yet know what kind of printer it is.
Select that name in the right pane of the Chooser, and you should get a ( Configure ) button. You will then have to configure it, either automatically or manually (or both) and it will get an Icon in front of its name and be fully useable.
Depending on what extensions you have installed, it may produce a Chooser-only Printer or a Desktop Printer. Either is perfectly serviceable, and this choice can be changed later should you change your mind.

  • Printer Driver for Laserwriter 320

I need to load the printer driver for my Laserwriter 320 on my iBook, which I just upgraded to OS 10.4. However, the install disk did not have any Apple printer drivers on it, contrary to reports stating that they were on the disk.
I have tried third party sites to find the printer driver download but only the driver for Windows machines can be found.
Does anyone have or know of a source that has the Mac printer driver for Laserwriter 320?
    Thanks,
    Greg Linn

    Hi.
The driver for the Personal LaserWriter 320 is already installed by default, since it's part of the Essential System Software. If you want to check it, just go to System/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj, and you'll find the "l LaserWriter Personal 320.gz".
If I recall correctly, in order to make that legacy printer work with OS X, you need an Ethernet to LocalTalk Adatper, like the AsanteTalk, or similar.
    Good Luck.

  • I can't get my G3 iBook (OS X 10.4.3) to drive a Personal LaserWriter 320.

I have just resurrected my trusty Apple Personal LaserWriter 320 and the Asante Talk adapter that worked flawlessly on my iMac 9.2. Using the Ethernet port on my G3 iBook with Tiger I get the error message -50 when I try to add this printer to my list.

    iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   LaserWriter 320, iMac 9.2, iMac G5

Do you have ethernet set up on the G3? It must have an IP address before appletalk will work. This is different from the way ethernet/appletalk worked on OS 9.

  • Personal LaserWriter 320

I have an old Personal LaserWriter 320 which worked perfectly when connected by Ethernet to my Power Mac G4. I have now connected it by Ethernet to my new iMac. My problem is that the printer now 'prints' a blank page between every genuine page. No tweaking of paper specs, margins, or defaults has worked. I can stop it by printing one copy of page 2 to page 2 (out of a 3 page document say) but if I ask for 2 copies of page 2 to page 2 the blank comes out between them -- just as when I ask for page1 to page 2.

I am using the EtherMac iPrint Adaptor which was supplied a few years ago with my G4 to enable me to use the printer (which I already owned).
I am using the built in Mac OS X Driver.
    The printer uses A4 paper.
Page Setup allows me to choose between US Letter, A4, A4 Small, and others. I choose one or other of the A4 options every time. This seems to stay put in TextEdit, but not in Word, not in System Preferences.
Printing starts further up the page than the top margin says it should. It would appear that the computer always assumes that the printer uses US Letter paper.

  • Personal LaserWriter 320 print margin issues

I just got a Personal LaserWriter 320 (which goes nicely with my Beige G3 running OS 9.2.1) I had been using a LaserWriter 300, and figured I could print documents pretty much the same - only to discover an amazing problem:
When I choose a letter-sized document, margins can be set to within .25 inch of the edge of the page, and it works. But when I try to print the very same document on legal-sized paper, margins must be .8 inch or even more! I can't figure out how to override this - is there such thing as a fix for this? Thanks!

Which laserwriter driver and what version are you using? It shows up in Page Setup near the upper right corner of the box, or you can find the Chooser Extension in the extensions folder and do a getInfo on it to reveal its version.

my faithful old apple personal laserwriter 320 works perfectly till 10.3.9.

I have a PowerMac G3 300MHz Desktop that is running OS X 10.2.8 just fine. I have an older Personal Laserwriter 320 that I would like to use with it. The desktop has the LocalTalk Printer Port (Mini DIN9) connector, so I can connect the printer with a LocalTalk cable. Is there a specific drive I would need to use with OSX???

  • End of the line for my LaserWriter 320?

I've been using an old Apple LaserWriter 320 for 12 years (really!) and did get it to work with OSX (I have 10.4.6 now) and it hasn't been a happy printer lately. First, the computer wouldn't talk with the Asante Ethernet to Local Talk adapter, so I changed the cable. That worked because the Asante was receiving the signal, but there still is no communication between the Asante and the LaserWriter. I changed that cable as well, and it's still the same thing. I've also reset the Asante and the LaserWriter (because sometimes that worked in the past) and that did not help. (And I know someone will ask this -- Yes, I am choosing the LaserWriter in the print dialog box.) This brings me down the three possibilities: hardware problem with the Asante, hardware problem with the printer, or the OS just really can't communicate with this old printer. In the prefs, it shows that the laser printer has driver 10.4 and PPD 4.0. The dialog box (which comes up when I try to print w/MS Word) still always tells me it can't communicate with the printer.
In case you're wondering why I bother with a laser printer, it is because I do have a need for a lot of B/W printing and hate to use my ink jet for that (but I've been forced to lately).
So it is really the end of the line for my good old Laser Writer?

Oops - I had forgotten how much my printer hates my fonts! I ran a test page with the Times font (something I know the printer will handle, and it did). Up until this point, it kept saying "Printer not responding" and the Asante showed no transmission to the printer. Hmmm... neither of these errors pointed out the fact it coudln't handle the fonts. (But error messages so rarely do help.) So then I took the doc I really wanted to print, saved it as a PDF, and then printed and it worked. I remember OS 9 having a feature in the print dialog box that helped me work around this problem, but there isn't anything like that in OS X. Any ideas?

  • How to connect my perfectly-working 20-year-old Apple Personal Laserwriter 320 to my iMac running Mountain Lion?

How to connect my perfectly-working 20-year-old Apple Personal Laserwriter 320 to my iMac running Mountain Lion?
              Thank you, Morty S.

I have a perfectly-working LW 4/600 with exactly the same issue. They use localtalk - a long obsolete network connection, that doesn't connect to modern networks, and appletalk as the comm protocol.
I think the only choice you have is to use an old powerPC Mac as print server. You tell me which old Mac you have, with a localtalk connector, or that runs OS X 10.4 or earlier (so it speaks appletalk), and I'll tell you how I've done it for the past 11 years or so.
Right now I use a G4 running 10.4.11, plus an etherMac ethernet to localtalk adapter.
Before, I used a PMac 6100 running LPD server software.

  • Personal LaserWriter 320 to iMac?

I have the LaserWriter 320 hooked up to the iMac through an Ethernet router, but the iMac doesn't find the printer. The 320 is not included in the list of installed drivers on the iMac. Any suggestions besides buying a new printer?

  • PostScript Printer Driver like the old Laserwriter 8 Driver?

    Hello out there,
I'm searching for a PostScript printer driver similar to the laserwriter 8 driver in the classic MacOS until System 9. This driver gives control about what fonts are included and it can generate EPS graphic files. Maybe someone can also tell me where I can get the standard 35 PostScript fonts.
    Best regards and many thanks

    Look in /System/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/

  • Laserwriter 320 manual feed jam

While manually printing envelopes, the manual feed stopped working: the printer begins to draw the envelope in, but then suddenly stops, then the paper jam light goes on. Regular paper jams, too, not just envelopes. Auto feed from the paper tray still works. Tried using a new printing cartridge. No luck.

You can get a kit from fixyourownprinter.com to fix that exact Personal LaserWriter 320 issue: http://tinyurl.com/7vma64. I used their kits & almost managed to revive a near dead Personal LaserWriter NTR. Until the Fuser & replacement power supply I bought died on me. Finding the Rev 4.0 ROM Upgrade Kit was impossible too so I eventually was forced to get rid of it.

  • Looking for Laserwriter 360 driver

My first time in the Forum... might be doing this wrong. I have a LaserwriterSelect 360 ... hooked through an Asante Talk box ... then into a Netgear router (ethernet cord) ... then into my iMac - G4. It used to work great. All of a sudden ... awhile back ... the 360 disappeared from my printer/fax system window.
I cannot get the printer utility to find the 360 anymore. What's weird is I see the 360 in the System Preferences Network "location" window! I think I need to re-install the 360 driver ... or is that the Laserwriter 8 driver? Whatever ... if anyone knows if that's what I need and where I can find it ... I would reeeeeeeeally appreciate the help. Phone support has not been helpful. I think flumoxed is a good word here. Thank you. -- Herbonicus

Answered my own problem. If anyone should have the same issue
here's the fix: Disconnect your Asante Talk box ... power cord ...
Laserwriter cord for a few minutes. Turn printer
on. Connect Asante power cord ... while light is blinking on the
Asante box ... plug in your printer cable to the box. Viola!!!

  • Connecting Laserwriter 320 to iMac OSX

I have a new iMac with OSX that I have successfully connected to my old Laserwriter 320 via an adapter that converts the "phone" jack into an ethernet jack, which then goes into the iMac. It prints just fine when I am offline.
    My internet connection is wireless.
So, this means that the printer, which works over the ethernet, is only avail able when I am offline.
    My question...(finally!)
Can the Laserwriter 320 be converted to a USB, Firewire or wireless connection?
    Thank you,
    Tom G L

    Tom,
This solution may be totally unworkable for you, but then again...
You say "The printer is old, but it works well and it's a postscript laser, which would be pricey to replace."
I just came home from the Washington State University surplus store auction. There were two LW 360s on the store shelves for over a year. Price? $35.00 a piece. Whay didn't I buy them? Because they were also selling LW 16/600 network capable printers for $25.00. I quit at ten - figured two per bedroom was enough. : )
So what about the 360s? They were finally put into a batch of printers to be auctioned off, including a Textronix Phaser color printer. Winning bid was $2.50 - I did not bid against the guy, I just asked what he was interested in. All he wanted was a box of ADB mice to sell on eBay for $5 a piece. Price of the 360 printers, Phaser laser and 50 ADB keyboards was free if I would haul the rest of his two pallets off for him.
Moral is, for over a year everyone had the chance to buy those printers for $35. Chicago is a big enough town to have one or two university surplus options and maybe even a recycling center. If you like your 320, look for another. Then when one decides to quit some day, the toner cartridge will move right over to the other one and keep on printing.
My $.02 worth, and you know I am a big spender.

  • Lost Apple LaserWriter 8 driver

I've searched my drives for the Apple LaserWriter 8 driver that I will require to drive a HP Color Laserjet 5550 and I think I must have tossed it when originally setting up my OSX 10.3.9 ( I'm keen on trashing items I think I'll never use). I searched for "LaserWriter 8" and nothing came up.
Can I download this driver from somewhere, and if I do, where should I put it?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    600 MHz iBook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Thanks for the info Niel.
I 'm sure I've gone through the entire 5550 manual slowly and carefully to see how to set it up, and I'm certain they mentioned the LaserWriter driver several times under their OSX instructions. Maybe I misunderstood. I'm going straight back to read it again and I'll get back with another reply, if you don't mind.
    Thanks

  • Printing to Apple Laserwriter 320

I'm trying to set up an old Laserwriter 320 with my Mac Pro using an AsanteTalk bridge (AppleTalk to Ethernet).
I was able to use this setup with a MacBook Pro using 10.4 (I think: no longer have the machine).
Can I do this with the new machine? If so, what do I do to set it up?

It should be possible. If you are connecting through Ethernet, make sure AppleTalk is turned on for Ethernet in the Network control pane, then boot the printer and the computer, then the AsanteTalk box, and add the printer through the default browser.
