Laserwriter, no manual printing

My presets were remembered from Tiger to Leopard but now when I want to print by manual feed on my Laserwriter 630 using the previous manual preset carried over from Tiger, the printer just prints automatically from the installed paper tray.
If I ever encountered a printing problem I would always use the trusted Desktop Printer Utility program, but now that OS 9 is not supported I don't know what to do.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for your reply Grant but perhaps I am not making myself clear. We have 2 select 360's. When I put a piece of paper in my printer's manual slot and select manual print in the print dialog window, the printer prints. When I do the same thing in my wife's select 360, a message appears saying "the printer is waiting for a piece of paper to be inserted" It has nothing to do with the size of paper, we only use letter size.
I remember being able to turn this message off because my printer used to do the same thing. Some thing like " When manual printing no special warning." I have forgotton how to do this and I don't see any place in the LaserWriter utility that addresses this.Maybe I need a copy of an older LW utility
Thanks for any help

  • Configuring an Apple LaserWriter 12/640 Printer to work with Mountain Lion

I have an Apple LaserWriter 12/640PS printer that works great.  But since LION and now MOUNTAIN LION I cannot connect to it.  Previously I had an ethernet cable going from my D-Link DIR-635 Router to a LocalTalk (AppleTalk) adapter which then plugs into the printer into it's "Ethernet" (AppleTalk or also called the EtherTalk) port.
OK now I no longer have the D-Link router, rather a new (latest 5th generation) Apple Extreme. More info: my ISP changed some things and the LaserWriter is now "set" on an IP address of:  192.168.0.123  which seems to be out of the range of my ISP allotted numbers – but perhaps I can change that manually by accessing my ISP's modem via the website / setup area??
BUT I am thinking that since I really only need to print to this LaserWriter from my one MacBook Pro running 10.8.2 Mountain Lion – could I not find either a Parallel to USB adapter or some other (USB to DIN8-"LocalTalk" port)???  I used to have some software and a cable (Parallel to DIN8) for my PowerBook back in 1994 that let me print to a parallel-port only printer back then, seems like yesterday actually…
The LaserWriter has these 3 ports:  LocalTalk (DIN8 type I think); EtherTalk (not an RJ45 cable!) and Parallel.
I also have a G4-733 Mac from 2001 that can startup in OS 9.2.2 -- but I don't seem to find the Printer with that (via the Ethernet cable to the adapter to the EtherTalk port of the LaserWriter printer).  This G4-733 does not have "DIN8" ports - just USB (I believe 2.0 but not certain - USB 2 came out in 1999 so I think this is 2.0 and I can check when I next boot this Mac).  It also has FW400 and SCSI but don't think that helps much for printing.  Ethernet RJ45 of course also.
Any ideas on what to do here.  Again, it worked before via my current set-up and perhaps the key is just changing the IP address (or enabling this address via my Apple Extreme or via the ISP's modem setup via the web address).
Hope this is somewhat clear--- think I have most of the information on one page here.  I can run tests, buy adapters or cables if necessary-- have enough cartridges to print another 10,000 pages at least!!
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Stephen,
Somehow I missed this topic as well. For that printer, you would attract more attention in another area (this one).
You have a number of options along the lines of what greg sahli suggested. I do not have that exact model LaserWriter, but I have successfully used a wired print server, a wireless print server, and a USB to parallel cable adapter to print from current production Macs to a similar model LaserWriter. All three options worked effortlessly. As long as yours is a PostScript printer, which it is, it should work.
See this post for details and options: Laserwriter Pro 630, Mountain Lion, and Macbook Pro

  • Laserwriter 320 manual feed jam

While manually printing envelopes, the manual feed stopped working: the printer begins to draw the envelope in, but then suddenly stops, then the paper jam light goes on. Regular paper jams, too, not just envelopes. Auto feed from the paper tray still works. Tried using a new printing cartridge. No luck.

You can get a kit from fixyourownprinter.com to fix that exact Personal LaserWriter 320 issue: http://tinyurl.com/7vma64. I used their kits & almost managed to revive a near dead Personal LaserWriter NTR. Until the Fuser & replacement power supply I bought died on me. Finding the Rev 4.0 ROM Upgrade Kit was impossible too so I eventually was forced to get rid of it.

  • Cannot manually print with Mac OSX 6 and ID CS3

I installed Mac Snow Leopard OSX yesterday, and now I cannot make InDesign CS3 files print manually. When I go to the printer dialog box and set Manual Print, then return to the ID Print Dialog and hit PRINT, I get the autofeed paper printed, not the manual. What happened?
    Thanks,

No, but I will download that now. Thank you.

I upgraded to the 10.6.6 version of the OS and I am still getting the same symptoms. I cannot seem to get Manual Printing from InDesign CS3.
I just tried printing from my Mail and cannot do that Manually either, so apparently there is a print driver issue?

  • Appletalk laserwriter won't print over airport wireless. please help.

i have an old apple personal laserwriter 320 which prints plug and play to my G5 (10.4.4) connecting ethernet (appletalk on) with asantetalk adapter. no problems at all.
i like to share this printer wirelessly by connecting it an airport express base station.
i cannot get my network of powerbook and G5 (all 10.4.4) to print to it, they cannot see it.
    1. can it be used wirelessly with the airport express base station?
    2. what about airport extreme base station?
3.i turned on appletalk in airport under network settings. how about under airport admin utilities?
i must be setting the network configurations wrong, or is it appletalk or the asantetalk ethernet adapter?
can someone please help me through this setup?

Well, I use an HP-6MP with an AsanteTalk hooked to an Airport Extreme Base Station and I use Tiger 10.4.4 and everything works fine. My wife's dual USB iBook, circa 2001, with an internal airport card, uses the HP printer with no problems. The same setup works with OS 9 too.
I also have an Airport Express hooked up to my livingroom stereo that I use with both iTunes and AirFoil. I've never tried using the Airport Express with the AsanteTalk, but I can't imagine that it wouldn't work since it works with the AEBS.
The startup routine is touchy, the printer has to be allowed to fully complete its warmup cycle before powering up the AsanteTalk. Try disconnecting the power to the AsanteTalk for about 10 seconds while everything else is hooked and powered up, then reconnect the power, the lights should flash on the AsanteTalk, then open the Printer Setup Utility, wait about 10 seconds and the printer should then appear, if it isn't there already. When we have power outages from say thunderstorms, I often have to recycle the AsanteTalk's power because when the power comes back on, it completes it startup cycle before the HP does and printer setting disappears.
It's not a matter of adding AppleTalk to the AEBS or Airport Express. There are no options for that. The settings are only in the computer network/airport settings. Both of your computers need to be configured to have AppleTalk active under the Airport network settings.
And as mentioned before, don't use the yellow ethernet cord.

  • Manual print prints a picture of the printer after printing

Recently installed LaserJet 1606dn on an XP SP3 machine as shared printer.  When printing manually the requested manual print document prints just fine but its also prints a picture of the printer after each manual print request.  Is this a feature that I can turnoff? Is there a glitch with the drivers?  I can't seem to figure how to turn this off.  Any ideas?

    Hello,
Thanks for the post.  With this one, (strange indeed) does it print the unexpected page from ANY application that you print from?  I've included some steps below and also some links to a couple of documents that I would suggest.  If the steps below do not resolve, I would suggest following the steps in document one (first link)  Good Luck!
Step four: Perform a power reset on the HP product and wireless router, and then restart the computer Follow these steps to reset your HP product and your wireless router, and then restart your computer.
Press the Power button ( ) on the HP product to turn it off.

  • HP LaserJet 1300 - No Finishing options for double-sided manual printing

I connected my HP Laserjet 1300 printer to my iMac and installed the drivers but I do not have the same capability I had with Windows XP. I do not have the Preferences options to select "Print On Both Sides (Manually). Actually, I do not have access to the Printer Preferences screens with the Tabs - Advanced, Paper/Quality, Finishing, Effects. Are these capabilities available on the Mac?

I plan to keep the iMac. I ordered the new software CD for my LaserJet printer. I just don't know all the option clicks that are there. I called Apple Care and found out about the small box with the triangle that pulls down more printer options.
I really would rather not use Boot Camp. I plan to migrate completely to the Mac world. I started migrating my few Publisher docs to Pages. I just found flip4mac. I just have to accept the steep learning curve for about 1 month or so.
I'm going to mark this resolved at this time.
    Thank you,

  • Final Cut Express Manual printing issue

    Hi
I'm recently purchased an IMac and don't have a lot of experience with the Apple operating system and Apple products. So if this question is more appropriate to another forum, please don't get mad.
I want to start using Final Cut Express. The Help manual is very long and for now I just have a dinky little color printer. I wanted to be able to just print out chapters or select pages from the manual that I could read at my leisure. I can't figure out how to select a page from "Preview" and print it.
I've tried to highlight a page and then print it. However, when I go to "Print the selected page" all I keep getting is the first page of the manual.
I'm sorry to ask such a stupid novice question and any help or direction of where to get help would be appreciated.
    Thank you

In the Preview window enter numbers in the From: To: fields. Only those pages in the selected range will print.

  • LaserWriter 630 only prints the vertical lines test page

I have resurrected a LaserWriter 630 pro that hasn't been used for a year or so, which starts up and the green ready light comes on. When I print to it, the pages come out blank. I have tried printing a simple text file, which was blank, and a one page PDF (simple text also). In the end the PDF took so long to process I cancelled it. Should it take this long?
The only ink I can get it to leave on the page is the first page of the paperclip-in-hole test page. It then prints a second page which is blank. Any ideas?
I have a copy of the Apple Printer Utility, and have printed it's font test page, which is blank also.
    Any ideas?
    James

    Dear Grant,
Thank you for the info, I hadnt found that detail anywhere. I will try it when I get home.
I think the laserwriter is a great printer, and wouldnt swap it for a brand new one unless it caught fire!
I gave it to my mother 2 years ago who used it for a while, then bought a colour inkjet and it ended up unused for a year or so. I have just taken it back to replace a much newer but much more irritating colour laser I found at the dump. I believe the last time it was used it worked perfectly. I gave it a new set of rollers about two years ago.
I am not afraid of a bit of multimeter probing!
    Thanks,
    James

  • LaserWriter II NT printing spurious Japanese characters

Okay, this is really bizarre! Over the past few weeks, my beloved LaserWriter II NT has begun printing a couple of Japanese characters a few times on each page. They are about 2.5 inches from the left edge of the paper, and they repeat about every 4 inches down the page. They're getting darker (and therefore more obvious) as time goes on, now making the printer useless for any sort of professional communications.
I'm guessing that this is a sign of a terminal software problem in the printer, but before I drag all 45 lbs. of it to the nearest Mac repair shop, I thought I'd ask here for ideas on what might be causing the problem and whether there's anything that can be done about it.
    Thanks!
    Patty

If your computer already has a serial port (com:), you probably just need a cable. There are several different kinds, but if you have a meter, I or someone else can help with pin assignments.
A serial port may have 25 pins, like a parallel port, or could have 9 pins in the same basic shape, or be a round 8 or 9 pin port, like the other one on the printer. This is the same port you would use to connect to a regular telephone modem for dial-up Internet access. If you do not have one, you would need to add a card.
You will also have to specify the way the port is to work: its speed, number of data bits, parity, and number of stop bits. There may be a control panel for this.
The Centronics-style connectors in general, and the Centronics-50 in particular (used on external SCSI drives) were not invented by Centronics. [Centronics made dot-matrix impact printers with the parallel connector called the Centronics-37. They were very successful, then went bankrupt when quieter printers took over the market.]
The 50-pin connector was developed for use in 6-button office telephone systems, which used 25 pairs of wires. But those connectors were used for so long that they were much cheaper than anything like them, so manufacturers could not resist using them.

  • Can't get Manual Print to Stick

I can't get the "Print all pages from: Tray 1 (Manual)" to stick in the print dialog. I change it on the screen then under presets go to 'Save' and give it a name. Next time I try to print using this saved name, the Paper Feed option has defaulted back to 'Auto Select'. Any suggestions? The printer is a HP Laserjet 4050, accessed via IP printing on a network.

This is a known issues...noted in other posts. I don't know a solution. Sorry

  • Duplex printing: Please help with 2 sided manual printing

Tried inserting script into document set action.  It did not work.  What script do I need to print a two sided document without a duplex printer
    pp.pageHandling = pp.constants.handling.booklet;
    pp.booklet.duplexMode = pp.constants.bookletDuplexModes.FrontSideOnly;

  • Laserwriter Pro 630 printing out as a negative WHY

I have had a LWP 630 for 4 years with out any major problems. It is networked for 2 PC computers and is the default printer of 2 printers. I have a Netgear print server. My OS is Win XP. The other day after printing several docs, it started printing in the negative. in other words black and white are reversed. All the printable area is black and any characters are white. This is from either PC over the network. This is from either PC from the LPT1 port to the centronics port, on the printer. (without the print server) It prints whatever it's sent. What can be done to switch it back???

I also have this issue. I just had a Pro 630 go belly up with a Green solid and Toner Solid and Paper Out solid. Diagnostics would NOT run. Printer just stopped responding and printing. It would however print a perfect test page with button push near exit tray.
Got a used printer from Craigslist and swapped out the I/O board. Now, it only prints in Negative and in really big type. If I only have 8MB ram, it prints a blank page. I am guessing it is printing just fine, but white text.
If I add 16 or 32 MB from the other I/O board, the background is gray or dark gray respectively and the type is really big.
Cannot find anything that will reset this thing.
Also, any leads on where I can get a copy of the latest LaserWriter Utility so I can run it on a Mac OS 8.6 machine?

  • Laserwriter 8500 to print on Novell Network

Hi world. Hope you can help. I have a Laserwriter 8500 and IT cannot seem to get it to work on the network. The main problem is they cannot find its IP address and the start-up sheet lists it as 0.0.0.0
How can we find the actual address of this printer? Please help.

    Hi,
You will need to configure the IP address of the printer. This can either be done with Laserwriter Utility on a Mac running OS9, or by following the instruction in this discussion - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4226940

  • Printer wont respond to manual printing

Using Photosmart C 4795 for years trouble free.  Suddenly will not respond to the "Print/copy button.  Works fine printing/scanning  sending into to/from computer. I can change the # or copies, size etc, but touch the print and nothing.
I have tried the wizard but because that is all activated through the computer it works fine.
    Ideas?

    Hello SterlingBlue,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having an issue when attempting to do a copy.
Please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
If you are still not able to copy after the unit has been connected to wall outlet,  I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.
