Laserwriter NTR Prints VERY LARGE Characters

The NTR is connected to a Sun machine running solaris. It prints fine from the Sun.
On the imac running SL when I print the size of the characters is very large. IIRC this started after installing SL. I have reset the print system to no avail. The printer URL is lpd://sun/lw. sun is the name of the sun system via DNS. I mount a filesystem on this machine and that works. At a prompt I tried
echo BOOOOO | lp -o cpi=10 -o lpi=6 which should give courier size print and instead I got the same old thing. I've tried it with the printer defined as a generic postscript printer and as a laserwriter NTR. No change. What do you suggest? What other information do you need?

This problem persisted over several power cycles. I read on a forum that the "deep cycle" power cycle is shutting down the machine, disconnecting power (unplugging the AC cord or removing the battery from a laptop), and pushing and holding the power button for several seconds (30 when I did it). That fixed the problem - printing is back to normal size. You Apple wonks gotta make sure you initialize every dynamic variable - Programming 101!!!!! I lost some respect for Apple in this episode.

  • Failing to print very large files

I've got an iMac running the newest Leopard, printing to a network printer. Printing usually works without incident. However, when printing large documents -- say a 20-40MB PowerPoint presentation with lots of color -- I receive the following message after 10-20 minutes of waiting:
    /usr/libexec/cups/backend/socket failed
The printer is an HP Color LaserJet 8550DN with 96MB RAM and a 3.1GB internal HD.
When printing large documents to this printer, printing seems to proceed correctly (if slowly) before reaching the inevitable error message.
Possible causes would seem to be
--too large a print job for the printer (though lpq suggests that many of the jobs that failed were <50MB). There was no other network printing taking place on this printer when the jobs failed.
--some kind of timeout issue. How is the timeout value set? It doesn't appear to be in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, at least at the moment.
    Any other suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks.

This info relates directly only to an Epson 9800. However, it may have applications elsewhere.
Generally, the print spooler in the 9800 with Photoshop will not print large files (>100 mb or so) unless you first convert them to the printer profile and shut down and restart the Mac and then print the converted image. This is true for Tiger and Leopard. In addition Leopard takes about twice as long to spool and since I print lots of 500 mb files, I have given up and gone back to Tiger (lots of other reasons also).

  • PLW NTR prints one page, then a blank, and stops

I have a dependable 18 year old Personal Laserwriter NTR printer which has been running with a Dell running Windows XP for a couple of years. The printer is connected via a parallel cable to the computer. The printer has suddenly started printing only the first page of a multi-page document, then prints a blank and stops printing while the top light on the printer keeps flashing. However, if I open and close the feeder door, the next page and a blank will print, and the cycle repeats. Thinking that the printer driver "broke," I deleted the printer control program from the control panel and installed a new copy of Apple Personal LaserWriter NTR v2010.129 from the XP program. No change in the status. I have used Word, Excel and Wordpad with the same results. Any ideas as to the problem and how to correct? Thanks

Sometimes sticking solenoids will cause this issue too, but if it were mine, I'd install the kit I mention above first, and see if that fixes it.

  • Setting resolution, deciding file type, for very LARGE Canvas prints. 36MP camera.

Okay, so I noticed my lightroom was on 240 PPI resolution. I changed it to 300 because I read 300 was for standard prints. What would I need to set the export to in the resolution box for a very large Canvas?
Is it better to choose Tiff instead of Jpeg for prints of this quality, if not then what should I choose?
I am using a Sony A7R full frame 36.4MP and with some of the sharp Zeiss lens there is really no pixelation that noticeable when I zoom in 100 percent. Of course the A7R is being said to be one of the best Sensors on the market today. It's supposed to be like the Nikon D800E, but apparently it has some advantages.
In other words, I want to export in as high of quality as possible for the Canvas. File size is not an issue.

Changing the resolution setting does absolutely nothing to the digital image. This is a common misconception. The only thing that counts in the digital image is the pixel dimensions. Regardless of what the PPI setting is (240, 300, 600, whatever) the image still has the same number of pixels. To determine what you need for a print of any size it is necessary to multiply the inches by the desired pixels per inch. Suppose you want a 16 x 20" print at 300 pixels per inch. The math would be something like this:
    300x16 = 4800 pixels
    300x20 = 6000 pixels
So to print a 16 x 20" print you would need an image that is 4800 x 6000 pixels. And the PPI setting can be anything you want it to be because it has no effect on the image.

  • How 2 print large characters using dos

i need 2 print a column in large characters while generating the report. i have to use dos printing only.

I assume by 'dos' you mean you can't go through a printer dirver but must write to a printer port (LPT:) directly.
In this case, your ony hope is to find the doc. for the printer and see what support it has. HP printers hava a language (there's HPGL, but also a simpler one for small printers), and then of course there's PostScript.
This used to be the way everyone did printing 'til it was hidden from us by printer drivers
    Good luck!

  • TS3276 Mail I receive has started to print in very large type-how to correct to smaller type?

Email I receive has started to print out in very large type, although I have not changed the font.  How do I correct this and restore to the original font?

Are you referring to the font size as the message appears on your screen?
If so, go to Mail, Preferences, and select Fonts/Colors. Try changing the font sizes there to see if you can get the size you want.
If it is PRINTING where the font is the wrong size, then that probably is caused by something checked incorrectly in the print dialogue box.Such as scaling the size of the printout.

  • Print comes out very large and oversize on my paper

    I have photosmart 6180.  When I print my stuff, suddenly everything is coming out oversized and very very large.  One page takes about 3 sheets to print.  How can I correct this setting?  My emails will print normal size but not the stuff from the website ;

    Hi Gatorjack61,
What operating system are you using ?
What about if you print a photo that is saved on your computer, does it look normal or oversized ?
You can try the steps below which were suggestions from banhien and Pushkarpathania in this post.
You can shrink before sending to printer (well also enlarge).
Just use Print > Print Preview
Under Shrink small drop down window, just select the right % for you.
Or you could try Pushkarpathania's suggestion:
•Click the arrow next to the Print button , click Print Preview, and then click Custom in the Change Print Size list. Specify how large you would like the webpage to be printed by setting a percentage in the Custom Size text box. This will enlarge the printed size of the entire webpage, but it might result in some of the webpage being cut off in the printed document. For more information about print preview.
    1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type Internet Explorer, and then, in the list of results, click Internet Explorer.
    2. Click the arrow next to the Print button , and then click Print Preview.
    3. In the Change Print Size list SHRINK TO FIT , click Custom.
    4. In the Custom Size text box, specify how large you want the webpage to be printed by setting a percentage. This will enlarge the printed size of the entire webpage, but it might result in some of the webpage being cut off in the printed document.
    Hope this is helpful.

  • Very large PDF, can't shrink it!

I've created a 44 page Indesign document using CS4 v6.0. The pages contain a random selection of 5 vector Illustrator eps files thought the document. The eps files range between 300k - 700k. When I export to create a PDF using the smallest file size settings I get a 80mb file. I've tried to optimize this in Acrobat Pro v9 but this makes no difference.
Any suggestions would be greatfully received.
    Thanks
    Chris

I think this question has come up before a while ago.
So, you have several very large
    b vector
files. Let's see what Acrobat can do to shrink a file.
    1.
    b Subset fonts.
Instead of inserting an entire 50-150K per font, just insert the (comparatively few) characters that are used in the document. Net gain: I'd say 50-100K. If you use
    i very few
characters in some fonts, it just might be worth outlining them instead.
    2.
    b Use image compression.
Some bitmap images may be stored uncompressed; the compression might not be optimal; or images are stored lossless (ZIP), while they can be stored lossy (JPEG) without significant problems. Or they are stored lossy but can even be storied
    i lossier
-- decreasing the visual quality significantly, but hopefully still recognizable. Hey, it's your call.
    3.
    b Use image downsampling.
Some bitmap images may have a larger resolution than needed (>300 dpi for color and grayscale; >1200 dpi for black-and-white) or even
    i wanted
-- Distiller, for example, has a threshold for color images at 450 dpi. Any larger is not just plain unnecessary, or even sensible overkill, it's a pure waste of perfectly good disk bytes and CPU cycles.
For a regular file that still should print nicely, a threshold of 300 dpi is enough. For something the client must be able to print for himself, 150 dpi is enough. For a screen preview, a mere 75 dpi should do (tell the client not to rely on the screen).
    Now, where did I mention
    i vector art
coming in? I didn't. Each and every line in vector art is as significant as every other one -- short or long, thick or thin (or invisible), filled or stroked. There are no set rules on which lines can be 'simplified' or discarded. Acrobat cannot 'downsample' vector art.
One possible solution is to rasterize your vector images, even if only for preview purposes. If the art is all full colour images, you might even rasterize them to 300 (or 450) dpi and use it for production. The files will still be large, but now it only depends on the physical dimensions of the images.
Another solution is to review the artwork. Are there lots of small details that *will* be invisible in the final print? Are there lots of paths built up from lots of points that can be replaced with a single curve? Stuff like that adds up.

  • What is the optimum core configuration for a new Mac Pro to process and manipulate very large (80 megapixel) images using PhotoShop and Camera Raw?

    Hello:
I will be using creative techniques to process and manipulate a large number (hundreds) of very large (80 megapixel) images captured using a medium format digital back (Phase One IQ180).
Final output will be digital fine art imagery printed using an Epson 11880 at large sizes (up to 60 inches x ?), retaining the highest possible quality and resolution. I will be using Adobe CC PhotoShop and Camera RAW as well as Capture One software. PhotoShop filters will be used extensively.
The Mac Pro needs to be optimized for the above purpose and be useful for at least five years. I plan to max out all the other options (RAM, graphics cards, storage). Performance is more important than cost.
The few discussions I have found that mention optimum core configurations seem to lean toward 6 or 8 (but likely are not taking into consideration my need for manipulating a large number of very large files), so I am looking to this foum for opinions.
    Thank you,
    Kent

  • Report not printing all the characters -main section width greater than 11"

    Hi,
I am trying to build/modify a Report (used in Oracle Apps) which will be printed on some perforated paper. The perforated paper is little bit wider (11.25 inches) than the regular A4 size paper.
The problem is when I print the report in Oracle Apps, the report isn’t printing all the characters at end of the page. I adjusted the page width to 11.25" in the main section's property palette, but the same thing is happening. Another point to mention is, I should use all of paper space.
I am not sure if it’s a report builder issue or oracle apps issue.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

You must have larger margin. Try to make smaller header and/or footer.

  • Is there a way to split a very large 1 page pdf into letter size multiple page pdf?

I often have very large single page pdfs that need to be printed onto letter size paper.  Usually I don't have access to the printer where I'm working so I have to send the file to someone for printing.
I have AXI pro, they don't.
I want to make sure the job is printed as I specify and most of the users are using Reader.  So I want to give the someone the pdf ready to print sized in legal.  This requires manipulation of the pdf that I don't seem to be able to figure out how to do.
In older versions of Acrobat, I could print to a new pdf and designate the page size.  Acrobat would create the multipage pdf.  The newer versions don't allow this.
With OSX 10.8 & AXI you can't save, export, split a one page (68" x 16") document into multiple page letter size (16 pages) pdf.
Perhaps this can be done by printing to eps and running through distiller again or something else, but I'm stumped at the moment.
Any suggestions of how to attach this would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

That's a tough one. Acrobat is not designed for tiling PDF files to create another PDF. That's really what you're asking. There is the option to PRINT to a PDF, and turn on the Poster feature. If were in Windows where there is a real Adobe PDF printer driver, you could probably use that feature. But for various reasons (too complicated to describe here), that was withdrawn on the Macintosh.
If you have a copy of Adobe InDesign, and if you installed an Adobe PDF 9 PPD file (see description below), it could be done in a somewhat awkward way. InDesign allows you to place PDF files so you would need to make a page of the proper size and place your large PDF:
Then after installing the Adobe PDF 9 PPD file, you could choose File > Print. Then choose to print a PostScript file to the Adobe PDF 9.0 PPD file. In the Setup panel, you'd choose a Letter size page. Then you'd choose the Tile option at the bottom and set the Overlap amount:
Then you'd save the PostScript file and process through Distiller.
My blog post below describes how to find and install the Adobe PDF 9.0 PPD file:

  • Error while printing (PDF) large BI reports

    Hello,
We use ADS to print our BI reports from the portal. For small reports (10-20 pages) this works fine, but for very large ones (>100 pages) we get the error "Error while generating PDF" on the screen (after a considerable amount of time). In the defaulttrace, I can see this error:

  • Unable to copy very large file to eSATA external HDD

I am trying to copy a VMWare Fusion virtual machine, 57 GB, from my Macbook Pro's laptop hard drive to an external, eSATA hard drive, which is attached through an ExpressPort adapter. VMWare Fusion is not running and the external drive has lots of room. The disk utility finds no problems with either drive. I have excluded both the external disk and the folder on my laptop hard drive that contains my virtual machine from my Time Machihne backups. At about the 42 GB mark, an error message appears:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "Windows1-Snapshot6.vmem" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)
After I press OK to remove the dialog, the copy does not continue, and I cannot cancel the copy. I have to force-quit the Finder to make the copy dialog go away before I can attempt the copy again. I've tried rebooting between attempts, still no luck. I have tried a total of 4 times now, exact same result at the exact same place, 42 GB / 57 GB.
    Any ideas?

Still no breakthrough from Apple. They're telling me to terminate the VMWare processes before attempting the copy, but had they actually read my description of the problem first, they would have known that I already tried this. Hopefully they'll continue to investigate.
From a correspondence with Tim, a support representative at Apple:
    Hi Tim,
Thank you for getting back to me, I got your message. Although it is true that at the time I ran the Capture Data program there were some VMWare-related processes running (PID's 105, 106, 107 and 108), this was not the case when the issue occurred earlier. After initially experiencing the problem, this possibility had occurred to me so I took the time to terminate all VMWare processes using the activity monitor before again attempting to copy the files, including the processes mentioned by your engineering department. I documented this in my posting to apple's forum as follows: (quote is from my post of Feb 19, 2008, 1:28pm, to the thread "Unable to copy very large file to eSATA external HDD", relevant section in >bold print<)
Thanks for the suggestions. I have since tried this operation with 3 different drives through two different interface types. Two of the drives are identical - 3.5" 7200 RPM 1TB Western Digital WD10EACS (WD Caviar SE16) in external hard drive enclosures, and the other is a smaller USB2 100GB Western Digital WD1200U0170-001 external drive. I tried the two 1TB drives through eSATA - ExpressPort and also over USB2. I have tried the 100GB drive only over USB2 since that is the only interface on the drive. In all cases the result is the same. All 3 drives are formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I know the files work on my laptop's hard drive. They are a VMWare virtual machine that works just fine when I use it every day. >Before attempting the copy, I shut down VMWare and terminated all VMWare processes using the Activity Monitor for good measure.< I have tried the copy operation both through the finder and through the Unix command prompt using the drive's mount point of /Volumes/jfinney-ext-3.
    Any more ideas?
Furthermore, to prove that there were no file locks present on the affected files, I moved them to a different location on my laptop's HDD and renamed them, which would not have been possible if there had been interference from vmware-related processes. So, that's not it.
Your suggested workaround, to compress the files before copying them to the external drive, may serve as a temporary workaround but it is not a solution. This VM will grow over time to the point where even the compressed version is larger than the 42GB maximum, and compressing and uncompressing the files will take me a lot of time for files of this size. Could you please continue to pursue this issue and identify the underlying cause?
    Thank you,
    - Jeremy

  • Problem with printing graph larger than screen size in labview6 (plots are shopped).

I have attached with my message the report I try to print. It is a Labview 6 vi.
I had no problem with Labview 5. But with Labview 6, the plots are shopped (all the rest of the report is correct). What is printed is not what I see.
The graph is intentionnaly built very large, then rescale to fit page, in order to improve the print quality of the plots. I repeat it, it worked fine with Labview 5.

    Hi Lionel,
I experienced a similar problem days ago: re-compiling a vi from LV 5.1 to LV 6.0.2 its front panel could not be printed anymore; no error, just a blank sheet.( The mass compile procedure did not reported any error).
The only way to get out from this headache was to re-build the vi in LV 6.0.2, I simply selected all its diagram and copied it in a new vi, saved it and I got print-outs!
    Try it.
    Good luck,
