Last ditch attempt! Nano not recognised by pc at all....

Hello
I'm posting on here as a last ditch attempt before I look into sending my nano away....
the only place the pc acknowledges it now is in the 'safely remove hardware' box.
It isn't recognised in iTunes, My Computer, or even Device Manager. The nano itself is showing the folder and exclamation point icon, with the iPod support URL underneath (unless connected to the pc, when it does show the 'do not disconnect' screen as normal).
When I try to use the Updater I get messages such as 'iPod Service error' , 'Can't mount iPod', etc etc. A couple of times it did let me 'Restore' but to no avail, and we're not even getting that far now! I've tried resetting, in disk mode etc. I've reloaded iTunes, tried a different USB port, reloaded the iPod software.
I've had it all of three weeks and was just sorting out playlists for the first time when it decided to disappear and not return.
If anyone has any bright ideas I can try before sending it away, I'd be really grateful.
Many thanks
Fiona

Well...
I have now ascertained that it is recognised in the Device Manager....under USB as 'USB mass storage device'. In 'Properties' it assure me the 'device is working correctly'.
Reformatted the iPod hard disk in 'disk mode' and it let me back to the Updater 'Restore' screen, but this time the message was 'firmware update failure; Disk write error'.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what this means in plain English??!!! I'm guessing it means 'totally f*$£"!! send it back...'!
I realise I am on similar territory to a lot of other forum users here, so have tried the bits and pieces mentioned, although I haven't tried formatting the drive the USB is connected to as someone mentioned....can't work out which drive it is....again, any advice would be great.
many thanks
Fiona

  • Revertindg from Vista back to XP, last ditch attempt to keep the touchsmart I.

    Hi
I have had the touchsmart for just under 2 years -one of the unlucky first few to get it...- and am frankly at the end of my teather with it. I even have problems with the typing!
I have decided to give it a last shot rather than swiftly get rid of it on ebay, and load windows xp on a last ditch attempt to sort it out and keep it.
I have windows XP on disc as I still use it with my vaio laptop, but would not be doing anything unless I had clear instructions (do not want to make things more difficult than they already are).
Anyone has instructions for it please?
At the moment, it is running on Vista Home Premium and even the same brand HP All-in-One (7210) printer thar the PCWorld salesman sold me at the same time(Feb07) stating it will be "fully compatible" with the touchsmart, does not run all functions properly (another issue I tried to resolve separately)!!!

I feel your pain about Vista.  I bought 2 Touchsmart computers and these are my first with Vista.
I have had an innumerable number of problems with Vista, as I imagine you have.  Of course, HP is of no help whatsoever, and Microsoft won't help us since Vista was OEM installed.
As far as XP, it is far superior in EVERY way to Vista, but I don't have a tablet PC version and I refuse to spend another dime on this Touchsmart, SO, the touchsmart sits gathering dust (mostly) and I am using my 4 year old XP machine.
I actually tried to post an item on eBay today with the Vista, but I couldn't complete the ad (javascript refuses to ever work) so I had to start over with the XP machine.
It's amazing, my 4 year old machine does almost everything faster than the touchsmart which HP advertises as blazing or lightening fast speed.
    Good luck !

  • Cancelled subscription to Premium, Appalled at last ditch attempt to keep my business

Hi Community I wanted to copy for you the email I sent to the last ditch 'premium@spotify' email address, which appeared as I tried to cancel my subscription. I was appalled that having struggled to get any effective technical help for months, there appeared an address which I had so far never encountered.  I saw this as a last ditch attempt by Spotify to retain my custom.  I was appalled.  I have an apple iphone and Mac, and i have for months had problems syncing my iphone, and loosing offline playlists, messages saying i have too many or not any devices synced.  I spent two hours today checking with my internet provider that it wasn't the UPnP setting, which it wasn't, as I thought.  Yesterday I had an inane email response from technical support which repeated the Spotify sites online 'Help' protocol, which I have followed, like so many of you, many times over the last few months.  I responded to Spotify's technical email with the information that I had carried out all of the proceedures and have heard nothing back from them.  Therefore I have decided to return to the free usage and save the £9.99 a month to support the sale of music in stores and online.  I have been a supporter of Spotify since the begining.  This is a real shame to see it get out of sync with it's customers and I was sorry to feel the need to write the letter below.  Good luck with your technical issues and God bless. Dear Premium@SpotifyI assume this email address to ‘premium@spotify’, is a last ditch attempt to help me resolve my technical issues and retain my business. I can tell you that if that is the case, it is too late, and I would strongly encourage you to move to a more effective technical support protocol which might involve an online chat service or call centre functioning within working hours, to achieve more immediate contact and resolution for your customers.I have struggled to gain technical assistance and a response to my issues, for several months and more pointedly in the last 48 hours. I have followed similar cases to mine on the ‘Community’ pages and see that little or no effective advice is given. My interpretation is that Spotify is either not keeping up with technical updates from other software manufacturers, or is under attack from saboteurs which inhibits the full technical function of Spotify Premium. What ever the reason for the poor technical management of the site, it would appear to indicate a lack of consideration and care for its longstanding and ongoing supportive customers. If you are concerned to look into my issues, I emailed technical support, you should be able to locate my email and response. I was extremely disappointed with your action and have indicated on the Community page that it is unviable to continue as a paying customer with an inadequate site. You can find that email too if you want. I will be monitoring yours and others responses as far as i can. With dismay.Meredith Irwin.

  • 6th generation Ipod nano not recognised in itunes

When I plug my ipod into my laptop, it is recognised in my computer but not in itunes or as a device when trying to safely remove it.
I tried plugging my 4th generation ipod nano into my laptop but again the same thing happens.
I tried plugging it into a different laptop and my 4th generation was recognised but my 6th wasn't. In another laptop, my 6th generation was recognised in itunes and worked fine.
I have tried resetting my ipod both ways, uninstalling itunes and reinstalling, using different USB ports and uninstalling everything apple related and reinstalling it but that hasn't solved the problem.
My laptop was sent away to have the hard drive replaced and this problem has happened since but that doesn't explain why it worked in another laptop but not in another one.
Can anyone suggest anything else I could do to try to make it work?
    My laptop runs windows 7.
    Thank you!

I've tried all of the USB 2.0 ports on my laptop and I have tried using a different cable.
I've tried resetting the ipod whilst connected to the laptop and still isn't recognised.
I am working through the iPod not recognised in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows:
    Step 1: didn't help
    Step 2: didn't help
    Step 3: didn't help
Step 4: Empty your Temp directory and restart - When I tried to delete the Temp folder, a message came up saying 'action can't be completed because the folder or file is open in another program' but I didn't have anything else open so I can't delete that folder.
Step 5: Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed - when I opened the Device Manager window, it was empty, there was nothing, so I couldn't continue with that step.
    Step 6: didn't help
Step 7: I've already tried to remove and reinstall iTunes and it hasn't helped
Step 8: Disable conflicting System Services and Startup Items - I did this and restarted my laptop then tried opening iTunes but it said Bonjour had been disabled so I enabled it but setting it to Automatic and then opened iTunes but the iPod still wasn't recognised.
Step 9: I turned off security and tried but he iPod still wasn't recognised
Step 10: doesn't apply to me as I'm using Windows 7
I've tried the steps in iPod troubleshooting assistant and they haven't helped.
I've put it into disk mode and its still not recognised.
    My ipod isn't Macintosh-formatted.
My ipod doesn't sync via FireWire.
I have now worked through each and every single suggestion from Apple.
I have run a device connectivity test with the iPod attached and here are the results:

  • Ipod nano not recognised windows 8

I recently bought a new windows 8 computer in Australia and I have a ipod nano 6th generation and Ipad mini  both from Australia.
At first Itunes would not open untill I ran it as an administrator, now it works but will not recognise any of my devices. I am currently living in Canada and I am unsure if when I have reinstalled itunes it has made the software uncompatible. I think this is highly unlikely but im starting to wonder if anything is possible.
Upon connecting my device it comes up in the devices and hardware tab as faulty I have removed and added it several times reinstalled and restarted. When I open it in Itunes it tells me that I should reinstall itunes because there is an ipod that can not be recognised. I have no idea what to do I've tried everything I can think of and Ive racked my brains.
Is there anyway I can get these apple products to work or are they now useless because I've updated my windows to windows 8.
    HELP!

  • I have recently got a new windows lap top and transfered by itunes library to it successfully. i cannot however sync downloads to my ipod classic and my lap top is not recognising the ipod at all. Please help ! Thank you.

I have recently changed lap tops and moved my itunes library successfully.
However I cannot now synce my ipod classic with the new windows pc.
The lap top is not recognising the ipod.
I have spoken to apple and they think its a settings issue on my pc ? I have fully deleted and then reinstalled itunes .
can any one help ? This should be easy to resolve but appears to be a common issue when looking on the web.
    Thank you

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

  • I updated from Snow Leorard to Moutain Lion and now my internet will not recognise  my password. All other comps use the network but my Mac upgraded Mac Mini keeps coming up with either 'timeout' or 'user or password not recognised' ...help!

    Hello all
I upgraded from Snow Leopard to the latest Mountain Lion OS and now my Wifi will not work. When I try and insert the password to my Wifi network states either 'connection timed out' or 'password and/or user name not recognised' please help...!

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
Restart the router. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 2
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 3
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts.
    Step 4
    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 5
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Potential sources of interference
    Step 6
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.

  • Ipod touch and nano not recognised with itunes

    Hi
I updated my itunes yesterday.  I have a new shuffle (4th gen I think) but 4th gen nano and 2nd gen touch.  Itunes recognises my shuffle no problem and I was able to sync ok, but it won't recognise the touch or nano, I tried 2 different usb cables but still won't recognise, is it something to do with older gen models not working with the new itunes??? I have a fairly new computer running off new windows package.  Itunes was recognising all my ipods until I installed the new itunes.  Any help gratefully received.
    Thanks.

It sounds to me like an issue with your iTunes, try un-installing the software and re-installing it and see what happens then. It seems a little odd that it won't recognise 2 iPods, so I highly doubt it is the iPods' fault.
If it deosn't work after re-installing, take it to the Apple Store (with your computer, if it is portable) and they should be able to help out

  • New ipod nano not recognised

ok, so just bought new ipod (7th generation) nano. All excited when it came, plugged it into and it says on my itunes that "an ipod has been detected but could not be identified properly, please disconnect then reconnect and try again" so obviously i did that. Didn't work. Tried all 3 of my other usb ports. Didn't work. Looked online and followed all the steps (restarting computer, updating windows, checking my usb ports, resetting ipod, and reinstalling itunes. none of this worked!! Really annoyed as I am wanting to use my new nano as my last one is literally dying! (hold button doesn't even work in my old one!)
any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Could be an issue with the new lighting cable as others have reported similar problems. Does it connect with another PC or Mac running iTunes?
If nothing else, I would recommend returning the iPod for a replacement as soon as possible.

  • Nano not recognised on windows or itunes and will not charge, help!!!!

i went to update my ipod the other day and it said that the ipod was corrupted, so i took it out and pluged it back in again and it worked fine. then i went to charge my ipod on the computer a couple of days later and its not regognised on windows or itunes and will not charge!
i have reset, restarted and updated etc and nothing has happened. i have read other thru peoples messeges who have simular problems and they say that reinstalling and reseting to factory conditions doesnt work.
can someone please help me or has any one had the same problem? thanks

can i put it into disk mode if the computer doesnt recognise it at all?
    Yes, you can.
"Putting your iPod into disk mode" is simply a process that involves pressing a few buttons on your iPod, getting it into Disk Mode.
To put your iPod into Disk Mode, follow the steps in this article -> Putting your iPod into Disk Mode
As Bryan said, see if the iPod is recognized by your computer when it's in disk mode.

  • Ipod nano not recognised in windows or itunes have done R&R twice

I have had ipods from the beginning of time. trying to sync brand new gen 6 nano without any success. My ipad works OK. can any one help?

A few things to try before doing a reinstall:
    - Connect the iPod directly to your computer. Not through a hub. Also, if you are connecting to a USB port on the front of your computer, try one on the back.
    - Disconnect all other USB devices except for your keyboard and mouse. There may be some other USB item conflicting with your iPod.
If neither of those helps, you should try doing a full reinstall. This means reinstalling all the Apple items (not just iTunes). Here is an article from Apple on how to do this.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925
After you do the uninstall/reinstall, you should be good to go.

  • Ipod Nano not recognised as an iPod

Hi, I have a fourth generation iPod nano, which today just started not working correctly. When inserted into my Mac, it will be recognized as a removable drive (with the name "noname" on the desktop, and it is not recognized at all in iTunes. I have tried resetting the nano, but that doesn't help. I have also tried running in disk mode which also did nothing. When I double click on the Noname icon, it is completely empty. When I look at the iPod menus they are all there but there is no music. I tried to restore it, but since it will not appear as a device in iTunes, I can not do this...
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Jasnz,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like you have already tried a coulple of these, but I would make sure you work through the rest of the these troubleshooting steps as necessary to try and resolve this issue.

  • Last ditch attempt to save art on imac dv se

    Hi there
I someone can help me solve a problem
I have an imac dv se (snow) "running" (crawling) OS9.
The internal CD drive still reads discs (just about) but is mechanically out of order and can't eject. ( i more or less have to take the machine apart to get a disc in or out. My external CD drive is also a goner - it was Iomega Hotburn and never worked well anyway but the data input port or whatever it's called - where you plug in the cable from the computer - is broken.
I have loads and loads of precious artwork and family photos on the machine which I want to save. I think the machine needs zeroing and then re-initializing with 0s10 as it is generally cronky all round. But I don't want to lose my work. In fact I desperately don't want to lose my work - it's actually more important to me than the machine. I can't afford a new mac and living on an island in Greece means there's no chance of getting a second hand one. What I really want is all these files on CD, preferably in a form that I can read on my Windows pc with a view to buying anew mac in the future or perhaps rescuing this one.
So, first question, can you recommend a cd burner that will work comfortably with this poor old machine as I think i am right in saying i will need to get everything off the machine in order to get it to a nice os 10 state where i can easily buy compatible thingies for it. Unless you think I can get away with partitioning it (I am talking thru my backside here - i haven't a clue what that involves, i've just heard of it and wonder if it is a solution which would then mean that I could install os 10, buy something straightforward and contemporary to deal with cd burning and gradually bring the pics over from the os9 side to the os10 side and pull them off that way.)
Bearing in mind that the machine is possibly in a fragile state anyway and crashes a lot (I can't get it online in its present state either btw or i'd sit up for days on end emailing the files from the machine to another location)
I've also considered an external hard drive purchase as a place of safety whilst i upgrade. Funds are limited.
    What do you think?
I do hope this pathetic attempt at describing the problem is comprehensible. I would like to save the imac which I loved dearly in its day as well as the pics and maybe it is possible. After the iomega hotburn debacle i am very nervous about making any purchase though.
    Any help appreciated,
    Kind regards
    Gina

Well, the stuff I need to know like the reverse workingness etc is probably so obvious to yer more proficient mac users they wouldn't even think to tell me!
I did think of one thing re another post. I had a lot of trouble for ages with Disk First Aid and de=fragging and so on because for ages the date on the machine was wrong = it had reset to 1904. It was only when I reset that that things get going. It still resets back there ( I think the internal battery might be the problem) but now I take care to set it correctly for the session before I try to do anything much. I think it's a problem common to imacs when they are getting on in years a bit. I've tipped off a few friends because you can see from their emails that their date is out. It's ok at first it's just over time things start going wrong.
Some of my problems are also to do with the local power supply being a bit lame so I have to make sure I've got a dedicated power supply or it gets very unhappy. The monitor display starts resizing itself and so on. Very alarming. In another sense it's amazing the computer has survived the life it's led to be honest. It's been moved from the UK to Greece and survived loads of bad power outages (one lost all my music) and it's taken ages to separate out the various problems to the point where I can start formulating a rescue plan. I have a feeling it will survive though I know my next set of questions once I get the stuff off is whether going all the way to OSx is the best thing. I think I've read somewhere that you have to go up from 9.0 via another upgrade.
Am not looking forward to all of that. It gives me a big headache and takes a lot of time. At least now I don't have to contemplate articide which was a bit depressing to say the least. If I can upgrade it I might even be able to get it to talk to my printer again.
Anyway, thanks a lot. Will get myself a flash thing next time I get paid.
    Bye now (late here!)
