Final Cut Express: Basic Troubleshooting
There are many problems that can occur in any version of Final Cut Express and each one is generally best treated with a solution specifically tailored to it. However, you will generally get the best results if you follow a simple step-by-step approach to troubleshooting outlined here.
1. Quit the application.
2. Is your computer supported by the version of FCE you are running?
Final Cut is particularly susceptible to problems when being used in conjunction with hardware, operating systems, and versions of Quicktime other than those that are supported. Always check before updating to see if the version you are running will continue to be supported. You can view the hardware requirements for FCE4 [here|http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/specs.html]. Note that FCE4 is the only version of the program supported by Snow Leopard. It is generally a good idea when working with Pro Apps to do a complete erase and install when updating to a new OS and then reinstall the program afterwards. Never update any critical software such as Quicktime or your OS when you are in the middle of an important project. Always keep a backup in case something goes wrong when you do.
3. Is your software fully updated to the current version?
In the upper menu bar, select the  symbol and click +Software Update+ in the contextual menu that appears. Make sure to download any Final Cut Express, Quicktime (if supported by the version of FCE you are running) , ProKit, and other important updates that the system recommends. Updated versions provide critical bug fixes and improvements that may solve the problem you were experiencing.
4. Are you using supported external hardware?
FCE can capture using FireWire from camcorders recording in DV-NTSC, DV-PAL, or HDV and can ingest using USB from AVCHD camcorders. Make sure that your recording device is compliant with one of these formats and not some related variant (such as AVCHD Lite). External USB drives are not supported by Apple for video editing - if you are experiencing problems while using one try disconnecting it and see if the issue persists.
5. Trash your preference files and repair disk permissions.
Whenever you have trouble in Final Cut Express it is almost always a good idea start by trashing your preference files. These can easily get corrupted and many problems can be quickly fixed by giving them a dump. The Apple Knowledge Base article found [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2611] outlines how to do this - [Tom Wolsky|http://discussions.apple.com/profile.jspa?userID=342090] also describes a good method [here|http://fcpbook.com/Misc1.html]. It is also a good idea to repair any permissions issues that may have arisen, and you can find a good description of the process [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963?viewlocale=en_US].
6. Search the discussion forums for solutions to similar problems.
You may be experiencing a common problem with the application or one that has been addressed when brought up by other users. Enter your query in the search bar on Apple Discussions and narrow your question to the [FCE forum|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=936&start=0] to get the most accurate results. Unless something very strange is going on it’s likely that you will find an answer or proposed solution has already been posted.
7. Start a new topic.
If you are unable to find an already posted solution on the forum that works for you and trashing your preference files has not fixed your problem, post a new topic in the FCE forum describing what is going on. Be as descriptive as possible and make sure to include pertinent information such as the specifications of your computer, OS, Quicktime version, the sequence you are editing in within the program, and the clip you are placing in it if this relates to the problem you are experiencing. Refer to [Eric W.|http://discussions.apple.com/profile.jspa?userID=337386]’s announcement [How to Post a new Topic|http://discussions.apple.com/ann.jspa?annID=650] for more information.
8. Perform a complete removal of the application and reinstall.
If you are not receiving working answers to your problem or it appears that your dilemma has not been reproduced in the past, try reinstalling FCE. You should first completely remove all traces of the program. Digital Rebellion has a nice free application called [FCS Remover|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcs_remover.htm] which automatically does this - alternatively you can manually do it by moving all components listed [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/TA47818?viewlocale=en_US] to the trash and emptying it. Note that the files listed may be named something slightly different if you are using a different version of Final Cut.
9. Contact Apple.
If all else fails, you should go ahead and contact Apple. It’s possible that you received a faulty disc or that they will have a solution to the problem that no one else has thought of. You can find pertinent contact information [here|http://www.apple.com/contact>.

  • What's the best camcorder for taking video to edit in final cut express?

I had a sony, but the file type was MTS and it required conversion to edit in Final Cut Express 3.  So i sold it on ebay, and I'm looking to replace it.  Does anyone have a set up that is easy to transfer HD video from their camera to their Mac, and edit those files right in Final Cut 3?
    Thanks!
    J

Not sure this is "rubbish" as you say Tom.  FCE 4 has to take files directly from the camera.  Works fine when I have the files I want to work with on the camera, does not work fine when I saved them to my hard drive, and want to import them later.
In case you don't believe my personal experience, here's another souce that has had the same conslusion:
"Incidentally, Final Cut Express will not transcode the native .MTS files directly; it needs to take the footage from the camcorder. However, a $30 utility called Voltaic can do the job outside Final Cut Express; it works on PowerPC Macs, too."
    http://www.macworld.com/article/131409/2008/01/finalcutexpress4.html
To Mr. Fore, I believe you are correct, it works fine to pull right from the camera, no issue there.  Issue comes in when I just want to dump video to my local hard drive and clean out the camera's hard drive so I can keep shooting, and come back at a later date to edit and clean up the old footage.  I end up having to import everything from the camera to Final Cut Express 4, which is time consuming, rather than just drop the files on to my hard drive.
What I would like to know, is there a camcorder out there that saves files in a format that I can drop on my local hard drive, and then pull into FCE later.  I would love to hear from someone who has done that, what camera they are using.

  • Delivering DVCPro HD footage for editing in Final Cut Express

Is there any way to prepare DVCPro HD footage in Final Cut Pro 6.0.6/FCS 2 so it can be edited in Final Cut Express?

You will have to media manage it to the Apple Intermediate Codec.  FCE doesn't do DVCPRO HD.

  • Is the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS worth the money for Final Cut Express?

    Hi,
I'm considering a new iMac 24, but not sure if the speedier on is worth the money.
Currently I use a MacBook Pro 2.2 for Final Cut Express with a 23" cinema (mostly DV, some HD) and that works okay, but won't play back in real time when I composit video.
Anybody know if the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS will help in that area?
    Thanks,
    KC

The speedier video card is great for 3D stuff, but it won't matter a wink for Final Cut Express, which barely makes use of the video card.
Keep in mind that Final Cut is using the CPU, not video card, to perform the editing, decoding, and encoding of the video. The only time the video card comes into play is during playback of the video, and any of the video options available for iMacs will handle that just fine.
When you composite video, the hard-disk throughput will start to come into play. The dinky 5400 RPM disk in your laptop will adversely affect the performance of that.

My HD died on my iMac. I replaced it and lost everything that was on it. I found my source disks from my original purchase for Final Cut Express HD 3.5.  I now have Maverick ISO and it will not let me load my software so I can continue my film work. How do I get it too recover it without paying for it again since I paid for it already and have projects in progress that need to be completed?

    1) Partition your hard drive or add an external drive and install Snow Leopard (with the Optional Rosetta) into it and then you can dual-boot (System Preferences:Startup Disk) into Snow Leopard and run FCE 3.5 there.
    2)  Use one of the following methods to install FCE 3.5 into Mavericks:
    a)  Pacifist:  http://www.charlessoft.com/
    b)  Jeremy Johnstone's Terminal method:  http://www.jeremyjohnstone.com/blog/2012-03-11-installing-final-cut-pro-studio-2 -0-on-mac-os-x-10-7-lion.html
Reports on this forum seem to confirm that Final Cut Studio 2 will continue to operate in Mavericks once it is functionally installed, albeit some plug-ins may fail to function.  FCE 3.5 is the same generation as FCS2, and presumably will continue to operate in Mavericks, as well.

Use MPEG Streamclip to convert it. Depending on the type of file you might need to purchase the MPEG-2 playback component.

  • Interfacing Video Camera to Mac Pro for Final Cut Express HD Use

I have a lot of Video8 tapes that were made on my Sony DCR-TRV310 that I want to move to my Mac Pro and edit with Final Cut Express HD. The Sony camera only has the three (R,Y,W) output ports and my Mac Pro only has firewire input ports. Does anyone know of a cord solution or do I have to use an additional interface. Thanks

    Hello,
Unfortunately there is no "cable solution" You will need an external interface. Something along the lines of an external tv tuner. Elgato Systems makes a few, i've had great success with the Hauppage WinTV PVR USB2 Tuner. This cost me about 150$ Canadian and is compatible with Mac's after a software download from the manufacturer's website.

  • DVC PRO HD for final cut express

    Hi,
I recently got some videos in the DVC PRO HD format that I need to edit in Final Cut Express. When I try to view them in Quicktime...the screen is black and I cannot import them into FCE.
I have no idea what to do? Any thoughts?
    Thank you.

FCE does not work with the codec, FPRO can, if you can access it. Or, this free app can convert the clips to one that FCE can work with.
    http://www.squared5.com/
Make sure the conversion matches the specs of one of the FCE Easy Setups. I'd suggest an AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec).

  • Seperate Video Monitor for Final Cut Express HD 3.5

Hey guys. I was just wondering if it was possible for me to connect my iMac Intel to a seperate video monitor. The thing is--I know you could possibly connect a dvi to composite or s-video adapter and walla...have a mirror of your desktop right there on your sony trinitron. But here's the thing. I want JUST the Viewer from Final Cut Express to be playing through it. Basically...I want my tv to be my viewer. Back when I was in school learning this stuff I remember all the setups I used had a little broadcast quality monitor connected, and ONLY the viewer window would be playing through it. Now I didn't use Final Cut then. I used something called Media 100. But the computers we used were like at least 10 year old powermacs. I dunno. I just have always wanted to copy that setup with my own computer. It was soo much nicer to edit on. I figured after this many years the newer macs would allow that sort of setup to be had a lot easier. Thanks for your time you guys.
    Branden

It goes this way: Firewire out>camera (aka A/DV coverter)>S-VHS (or composite) to NTSC monitor. The audio goes line out from the A/DV converter to speakers.
Hook everything up when the computer is off.
Turn on the camera, monitor and speakers
    Turn on the computer
    Launch final cut
it the image does not automatically show up on the external monitor
    go to View>Refresh A/V Devices
    then
    Set View>Video Playback>Apple Firewire
    Set View>External Video>All frames
    Set View>Audio Playback>Audio follows video
all should be happy. there is probably a big section in your user manual about this stuff.
    good luck.

  • Converting FCP .mov files for Final Cut Express

Working in FCP 6, I've transferred P2 footage (720p30) into an edit, via the Prores 422 (HQ) codec. No problems, edit done. But now my client would like the source clips to manipulate in her copy of Final Cut Express (version 4).
FCE doesn't recognize Prores, it seems, so I've tried converting a sample clip via "Apple Intermediate Codec," which does produce a recognizable file, but requires a render. From what I can see of FCE, the AIC codec is the way to go, but obviously I'm missing some setting, because whenI asked her to render, export as .mov, then re-import, and that new clip shows without having to render.
That tells me it's probably some specific codec consideration, but I'm not really familiar enough with FCE to troubleshoot it.
Any ideas about the proper export settings for getting 720p30 HD footage into FCE?
    Thanks in advance!

The problem is a little more complicated with DVCPRO HD media because it uses its own anamorphic frame size for 720p media. Open the file you need to convert into the QT player and give the exact specifications from the movie inspector.

  • Does anyone know good free internet tutorials for final cut express 4?

ok, so i finally have my final cut express 4, it seems very intimidating and i get sacred just looking at the program! i need 2 things, online FREE tutorials, other than the ones apple offers, and a good stock footage website that is also free... HELP!!!
    Message was edited by: James31

There are dozens of free tutorials on the web, both written and in video format.
Ripple Training has about 50 video tutorials which you can download free of charge;-
    http://www.rippletraining.com/freetutorials_final_cutexpress.html
HOWEVER they are useless for beginners because all the available tutorials tend to be on interesting BUT RANDOM SUBJECTS which I believe is something you DO NOT WANT ?
I think you are probably looking for something that will take you in an orderly and logical fashion from installing FCE and setting up your camera so you can capture the footage, through all the basic processes of editing, explaining them clearly and unambiguously.
If that is the case, you cannot do better than to get one of the books suggested by Michel and written by Tom Wolsky.
It will not only enable you to master the basics quickly and easily but will take you up to a high standard of film-making competency.

  • Best hard drive performance on mac pro for final cut express

This week I'll be setting up a basic 4 core mac pro with 16 gb ram and 2 internal- 2tb WD Caviar Black drives. I'm wondering what would give me the best performance for running final cut express, and I'm considering setting up software raid 0 or using one drive for boot and one for scratch. Or should I set up software raid 0 with boot and scratch partitions? Or other suggestions? Thanks.

    My recommendations -
With 2 drives in your Mac Pro, use *one disk for OS X and all of your apps;* the *second disk for data* (including your FCE scratch disk location). Partition each drive as a *single partition,* which will maximize performance over time.
In addition, you should invest in at least 1 external drive to use for backup purposes; if you don't, the day will come when you wish you had.
I strongly recommend AGAINST doing software RAID. Certainly not for your situation with only 2 drives, one of which will be your system HD; but also because hardware RAID is faster, more reliable, and does not require CPU resources to run.
Your internal SATA drives will provide plenty of performance for most video editing needs. You also have the ability to put 4 drives in your Mac Pro, in which case you can utilize the extra drives to provide additional performance if/when you get into serious multi-multi track video compositing.

  • Which camera to get for Final Cut Express 3.5HD/ upgrade to FCE 4?

    Hello everyone!
I know this has been discussed frequently, but i am sort of looking for a costum made solution for me
    Following situation: Macbook, 2.16Ghz, 2GB Ram, 320GB HDD @ 5400rpm.
I am running 10.5.3, have Final Cut Express 3.5 installed and am used to work in it,
mainly for editing video files not coming from a camcorder.
I have some experience in SD miniDV recording/editing though.
NOW I was thinking of getting a new camcorder in the 1500$ max range.
I want to edit video files, sometimes burn DVDs, at other times only to have them on the mac.
What i like about some of these new HD consumer models they can record AVCHD and mpeg2 SD in DVD quality. That should allow me to record in mpeg2 and have less hassle with importing/converting into Final Cut Express 3.5 if lower quality is fine (which it is as of now)
At the same time I could upgrade to Final Cut Express 4 and import the AVCHD files, but I still taken aback from how time and resource consuming it is. Plus it does not allow full HD 1920x1080 in FCE 4 does it?
So I was looking at the Sony HDR SR11 as a nice camcorder. Seen it live, seems decent.
On the other hand, is a camera which records in HDV a better solution for me?
I could keep Final Cut 3.5, no need to upgrade right?
Is it less hassle to transfer files to the mac and edit them?
I am very unsure which way to go right now...

    Hi Flore
This a huge debate. There are very few advantages to the new AVCHD camera's and the vgery long list of negative aspects of AVCHD camera's outweighs any usefulness of them. They are designed for Grandad to pick up and shoot good quality pictures and not for editing.
I have posted below the wiki address for AVCHD, please read the page. It is very important you do read it. It explains in depth about AVCHD.
I feel the is no real place for the hard drive based AVCHD camera. There is a place for a mini-dv tape based camera.
Life will be very hard if you go the Hard-drive camera route. Stay with tape.
Tape is cheap, hardy and easy to move around. Hard drives not so!!!
Take some time to read the following wikipedia page...PLEASE READ THIS PAGE!!!
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD
You will see that AVCHD is not all the bee's knee's.
I personally hope it dies an extremly painful agonising drawnout death.
AVCHD has no place in the professional domain.

  • Importing Quicktime Files to Edit in Final Cut Express

I just bought final cut express to edit quicktime files I receive from work. FCE will not let me import certain files and I get a message saying "Error: File Type Unknown", but what's weird is I CAN import some files that are the EXACT same file type!
I have noticed that one difference in these files is that the icons in Finder are different. The file I CAN import is usually the default quicktime movie icon, while the ones I CANNOT import usually have a video thumbnail for the icon. Does this mean anything?
The files are the same. Same codec, same frame rate, same dimensions, everything but the video length & icon view finder are the same.
Please someone assist me with this or I will have to return FCE and start saving up for FCP I suppose.

I couldn't do this action, I don't have Quicktime Pro. Should I invest in this? What does it mean if the Audio and Video aren't the same settings? Can I change them with Quicktime pro? Thanks!
