Last image settings for auto apply adjustments?

We're testing the watched folder setup for LR3 and it seems to work fairly well.  One very big snag we've come across though is with using auto apply adjustments and the apparent lack of a 'use previous image settings' option.
We're using DSLR Remote Capture for the live preview functionality using a 7D and have LR set up to watch the Lightroom folder setup by DSLR Remote Catpure.  It would be fantastic if LR would automatically apply the last settings used to the new image file that pops up in the watched folder.  The flow and flexibility this would allow for would be ideal.
Did I miss this setting somewhere or does anyone know of an easy workaround?  I'd really prefer not to have to save custom presets everytime which is the only workaround I've put into practice so far.  It's a clunky way of doing things and really racks up a whole bunch of presets that are only really relevant to a single shoot.

Lightroom doesn't support Liveview on the Canon's (7D in this case) and many studios and photographers need to use Liveview while working.  This means that tethering directly in to Lightroom is a no-go since Liveview isn't an option.
The solution to date is to shoot using the Canon software or OnOne's Remote Capture to a target folder on the computer.
understood.
Lightroom can be told to watch the folder and import the files as they become available, however LR moves the files and the capture apps are no longer able to see them.
Why does the capture app (i.e. EOS Utility) still need to be seeing them?
Re. the 'last settings used'...
Let's say you're tethered to an app that is not LR for capture purposes and you're having LR automatically import the captures.  The ideal workflow would be to have LR leave the files in their original location as it can do when not using the watched folder.  When the photographer is on set and captures are coming into LR, they typically will tweek things like colour temp, levels, curves, vignette, etc. in LR.  Each time the photographer takes a new capture, they're forced to copy paste the settings used for the previous capture.  This is extremely annoying and cumbersome.  While lightroom can apply presets to incoming images, it has not allowed for the option to use the last settings from the last imported capture.  Currently we either have to copy/paste settings or save the current settings as a preset and have them applied as new captures come into LR.  Given that we're often tweeking the lighting, focus, etc. each shot, or short series of shots, is often different and applying the custom preset still requires further tweeking in LR.  If everything is aok (lighting, focus, composition, etc.) and we're simply capturing for variations of the subject or talent, it would be incredibly fantastic if LR would simply apply the settings used from the last capture.  I should note that no other raw software out there right now can do this either (C1 Pro for example).
OK, I can see what you mean now. So more specifically, the setting you'd like to see copied to a new capture is the one from the last imported photo.
An easy workaround I can suggest is to
have a named preset called "Last Image"
always have this preset applied during import
update the preset values of "Last Image" every time you adjust something on an image
By doing so, you don't have to manage preset names for different purposes, "Last Image" just contains all the settings from whenever you last chose to update it.

for some reason, aperture 3.0 has been giving me the same settings when using the auto exposure on raw files. i swear it wasn't that way when i first started using the program. regardless of the image, it always sets an exposure of 1.0 and a recovery of 0.0.

  • Anyway to turn off "Apply Auto Tone Adjustments" with Tiffs + PSDs?

    Using 1.1 on Mac....
When I view tiffs in Lightroom 1.1 I noticed images are much lighter than when viewing in Photoshop. Is it the preference "Apply Auto Tone Adjustments" being applied? If so is there a way to turn it off for Tiffs and PSDs?

    John:
I think I just ran into the same problem in a different venue, and maybe many people are having this problem. I imported a folder of layered psd master files from which I wanted to output prints in the LR print module. (You can see the thread on this forum titled "lightroom output prints are too light"). All of them looked a good stop lighter when viewed in the LR window as compared to when they were opened in photoshop.
After some other diagnostic suggestions that did not yield a solution, Jeff Schewe told me to use the Zeroed preset when importing images, so as to eliminate any develop settings that might inadvertently be turned on. I haven't tried to print yet, but they are importing as I write this and the ones in the LR window look like they match the image when viewed in photoshop. I just checked Lee Jay's advice and did find that I had "Apply Auto Tone Adjustments" checked in the presets preferences. Am not sure why this would override "none" when importing, but evidently it does.
Am also not sure what your issues about syncing are (I didn't even know "Apply Auto Tone Adjustments" checkbox existed till I read your thread), but hope this helps.

  • Apply adjustments for highlights/midtones/shadows to the entire photo?

    Hi,
I'm wondering whether it is possible to apply adjustments like sharpening, contrast etc. only for highlights (or midtones or shadows) to the entire photo. Applying it with a brush is no problem, but the brush size is limited for that and it's really cumbersome to brush it onto the entire photo.
I thouhgt it might work to apply the adjustment to a small part of the photo and then invert it, but then it applies it to all shadows, midtones and highlights again.
Does anyone know an easier way to do that?
    p.

I do not.  Luminance range auto-masking is available only to brushes.
I had assumed this limitation was put in place because the performance when applying adjustments to all the pixels that are in a particular luminance range was too slow, but then I realized that Curves and Levels do exactly that.  Perhaps it is because they are limited to the luminance channel.
You options are few, but not halting.  You can create a brush mask that covers the entire Image.  This is slow and frustrating (computers are un-sweating slaves; you should be able to order "Do this until it's done", where the decision whether or not to proceed is yours, not the application's).  Or you can use an external graphics program such as Photoshop that allows you to create an image mask based on luminance and apply a modification to the pixels that come through the mask.
Note that for modifications that are based on groups of pixels (such as sharpening), you will have (in theory if not in practice) unintended effects at the edges of the mask.

  • Image processor not saving settings for images to process

    Hello,
I have raw images taken by a Canon G9.  I am trying to convert these .CR2 images to LZW tiff's.  This is my process:
In Bridge, select images to process
Click tools > photoshop > image processor
Image processor window comes up.  I have the following settings:
-Open first image to apply settings
         -Save in same location
         -Save as TIFF
              -LZW
-Include ICC profile (no idea what this is, but it's checked)
    Click 'run'
    First image appears.
Apply settings by clicking the pre-sets button and selecting my preset
    Image looks great
    Click 'Done'
    Images process
At the end of the process, I get a message that says Sorry, I could not process the following files: (c:\temp\IMG-9678.CR2.  Which is the first image in my process where I applied my preset for the remaining images.
The remaining images are in my TIFF folder as tiff images, but none of my preset settings from the first image carried over.
    Am I missing a step?
Thanks in advance for any help.  I'm lost.

I guess that could mean that Adobe Camera Raw isn’t part of Photoshop’s Document Object Model.
But I suppose in such a case it should be possible to open all the images in ACR and apply the settings to all of them in one step with the Synchronize-button and then use a Script to save all open files.
Admittedly that would be less convenient than Your proposed way, but maybe someone else has a better idea.
»-Include ICC profile (no idea what this is, but it's checked)«
Please don’t take this the wrong way, but You should read up on color-management.
Not including the profile can generally be considered unprofessional (except maybe in an internet-specific context) and a potential source of problems.
An images’ pixels’ RGB-values can be correctly translated to the originally intended color only when the »key« (the icc-profile) for said translation is known.

  • Best Settings for making a Secure, Reliable Disk Image?

    Hi guys!
Can anybody direct me to the best settings that can be used to make a secure Disk image using the MacOS X disc utility?
I wish to make my computer family friendly, yet keep my proffessional and private files secure/private and innaccesible to children and unautorized individuals. I have heard that files saved inside encrypted images (password protected) are also not indexed in the finder wich is perfect for the privacy I seek (this is true right?).
I know how to access the tools, but the right settings for making a trustworthy image remain elusive. Already tried with some of the formats and information placed inside...started becoming glitchy and unreliable, even after removing the files and making them unencrypted again.I'm abaout to try with the HFS+ format.
I cannot lose the files I wish to protect. But I need to secure them and if anything, be capable of backing up the image by copying it into a HFS+ formated external hard drive every once in a while. Can this be done?
Is there a risk of data loss in the encryption process? One of my external drives (FAT 32) even started to make unrelated neighboring folders "disappear" after making an image inside ( I though I could make an image anywhere and save stuff securely at that point...but nearly losing the entire cashe of info made me backtrack and simply avoid the process until i'm sure of what I'm setting up---so many compatibility problems!)
    • Don't know what settings to use.
    • Some say there is a small chance of a disk image being damaged or corrupted (for no reason whatsoever)...but having trouble right off the bat, with a brand new image worries me. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Is the system unrefined and unrealiable?
I plan to make the Image a sparse file, using the HMS+ format, 400GB....regular encryption. I plan to copy all my sensitive stuff inside and delete unprotected copies. Risky? Are images unreliable in general? or where my glitches abnormalities?---Can the images hold collections of files or do they become more unrealiable the bigger they get (what I fear). I don't wan't to have to make dozens of images to protect my files.
Can a external drive be formated to HMS+ and accept  a drag and dropped copy of a 400GB image? FAT32 will just not accept it. Would there be risk of the image being damaged in the transfer? NOTE that copying the data into an external drive would be to have a secure backup of the data. If I can't trust the backup to be carbon copy intact...it isn't a backup.
Securing files is really proving to be bothersome, despite having "refined" tools at my disposal.
    Thanks for your help!

Do you place your backups on external disks? Are your external disks formatted HFS+?
Can HFS+ Disk image be Drag dropped into a HFS+ formatted external disk in order to copy them? or is the process blocked like what happens to large Disk images in FAT 32?
I'm trying to lock on to the right format to apply to everything. My steps will be:
Make the image: So far a sparse image in HFS+ format, 400 GB, No partition map.
Drag sensitive work to Disk image. Once transfer in complete delete originals.
Format an external disk into the journaled HFS+ format. Drag drop Secure disk image to back it up.
Do you see any problems with this process? Anything i'm missing?

  • Batch not applying ACR image settings

I am aware this has been posted, but all related posts are filled with too much ancient ambiguity so I was hoping to create a simple thread with a simple answer.
    Have 30 photos (JPG)
Open them in camera raw from Bridge (CRTL-R), edit them accordingly, applying different crops, saturation, exposures
    Click done
Then start a new recording in photoshop
Select one image I edited, open in camera raw (Yes Image Settings is checked)
Open that image (Oh hey look at my recording, it is recording all of my specific edited values for this image, not good but I'll continue)
    Resize
    Save
    Close
So as many posts have asked before...why, when I run this batch, do all of my image settings follow the first, why can't they follow their respective raw image settings?
    Extra info:
    CHECKED:
    Override Open
    Override Save as
Sad thing is I'm pretty sure I did this before after tinkering for a while, but can't remember what magic switch I flipped. Thanks in advanced.

    Perfect, thanks Jeff
Here's the simple solution to prevent frustration...STAY AWAY FROM BRIDGE
I will repost what I did as compared to before and bold the changes
    Have 30 photos (JPG)
Open them in camera raw from Bridge (CRTL-R), edit them accordingly, applying different crops, saturation, exposures
    Click done
Then start a new recording in photoshop
Select one image I edited, open in camera raw FROM PHOTOSHOP FILE-OPEN, NOT BRIDGE (Yes Image Settings is checked)
Open that image (Oh hey look at my recording, it is recording all of my specific edited values for this image, not good but I'll continue)
    Resize
    Save
    Close
Forgot to mention that I apply the batch at this point
Thanks, hopefully this will be the new one-stop-shop.

  • 'Auto resize image' 'Settings' dialog box controls

I have a signature that contains an avatar image (size 120px by 120px)
Every time I 'Send' an 'Auto Resize Image' > 'Settings' dialogue box pops up
How can I bypass this as its becoming annoying.
Most emails (98%) do not contain any other embedded or attached images.
This only started to happen after upgrading to latest version of Thunderbird, was never an issue before.

Doesn't sound like a standard Thunderbird pop up as I've not come across it.
Do you by any chance have an addon /extension such as Auto Resize Image?
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/auto-resize-image/
if yes, disable it and retest to see if message stops.
Check you are using an up to date version.
check to see if there is some settings you can use to 'not ask again' or similar. Can't say exactly as I do not use it.
I use the standard TB settings to adjust for sizing when I originally insert an image.

  • Apply Settings for EWA Monitoring missing

    Hi all,
we are adding a SAP HANA Technical System on Solution Manager, but we found problems on EWA:
We followed the note http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1542651  for using Early Watch Alerts on HANA Standalone (without Netweaver ABAP) and then followed the note http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1747682 for add an HANA Technical System on Solution Manager.
The fact is that in step 6 of "Managed System Setup" we don't found "Apply Settings for EWA Monitoring":
In attached image you can see only 4 activities instead of five: the follow image is taken from another Solution Manager (SPS10, but SPS7 works the  same)
We have SAP HANA 1.0.69 and Solution Manager SPS8.
Why "Apply Settings for EWA Monitoring" is missing? How can i apply this settings?
    Best regards,
    Roberto

After 19 hours of this problem, it is now resolved on the management portal.  There was no mention of it being a problem on the Azure Status page.

  • Image Downsampling Settings for PDFs

Hello.  I am experimenting with the PDF settings in Acrobat to try to find a good compromise between image quality and file size.  I am trying to learn about bicubic downsampling for images and what would be good settings to use.  One thing that I've noticed in the different default PDF settings provided by Adobe (High Quality Print, Press Quality, Standard, Smallest File Size, etc.) is that the pixels per inch threshold for downsampling images is always 1.5 times greater than the downsampled image.  For example, the Standard setting downsamples images above 225 ppi to 150 ppi, and the High Quality Print setting downsamples images above 450 ppi to is 300 ppi.  Could someone explain the reason for using this ratio?  Also, why not just have one value for downsampling?  For example, for the Standard setting, why not just downsample all images above 150 ppi to 150 ppi?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Mark,
To get the highest possible quality jpeg you need to export with the preset "Jpeg - original size" with its default settings.  Check, how they are set:
Size to:  This lets you specify the dimensions of your image files in various ways.
Original size, percent of original size, fit within all refer to the dimensions of the digital image measured in pixels, and that is directly related to the resolution of the the image. You will want to preserve as many pixels per row and column as the original image has, so set this to original size.
cm, inches refers to the width and height of the printed or displayed version of your image. It will only make sense, if you specify dpi as well. Then the pixel size of your exported images will be computed from the dpi (dots per inch) you set and the dimensions in inches.  I prefer "Original size", unless I know I want to print an images with 4 by 6 inches e.g., then I use this setting and set the dpi to 300.
The image quality slider: Jpeg is a lossy format, as you probably know. A jpeg image is not represented by a grid of pixels but by a set of coefficients for a mathematical approximation function. The higher the quality value,  the more coefficients will be stored and the more storage will be needed. A low value will result in a highly compressed image file with a small size, but horrible quality, because the approximation is not very accurate. The edges and fine details will be approximated poorly, and the image will show blocky artifacts. The quality sider set to 12 will ensure that the image will be represented perfectly with no artifacts, but the size of the image file will be a lot larger. A quality of 10 will be a good compromise in many cases, but you will have to experiment. This will largely depend on the type of image you are having.
I'll leave the answer to the last three points to the colour experts here.

  • Camera Raw - apply auto tone adjustments ...

In camera raw, "apply auto tone adjustments" option in the preferences dialog is not same with the "auto" button on the basic panel, isn't it?
Both of them control the same sliders, are there any relationship between them?

Maybe, there is a bug for Windows 7 64-bit ... when the "apply auto tone adjustments" option is active on the preferences dialog, the auto button on the basic panel is also active and I'm always getting slightly different results by pressing it.

  • A way to activate ICC profiles for all applied images

    Hi there!
I think there should be an option in InDesign to activate the ICC profiles for all the applied images.
For those who work with PDF/X-4 and a Workflow-based Color Management, it's very important to take the images' profiles into account.
I tried and tried, but could not find a way to make it all at once in InDesign.
Today I have to change the color settings so the INDD's profiles won't match the Color Settings' one, and then open the INDD choosing "Activate All Profiles" on the "Profile mismatch" window.
It could have an option to choose to activate only the CMYK or RGB profiles and even choose what profiles to activate or not.
    Who would agree with me?
    Tiago Cheregati

First of all thanks for your help, Dov.
I may be wrong, but from the tests I made, the image's ICC profile is honored only if the InDesign Color Settings CMYK field is set to "Preserve Embedded Profiles".
If, at the moment that you place it, Color Settings are set to "Preserve Numbers (Ignore linked profiles), InDesign will "forget" the ICC, and won't send it to the PDF/X-4 even if you ask him to.
Now, I don't remember which is the default option for InDesign's Color Settings, but we receive a lot of .indd files (most of them books) whose images are profile-ignored. And then either we change it one-by-one or we assing another profile for the .indd, save, close, open it again and ask him to "re-enable" the profiles in the Profile Mismatch window. As I mentioned above.
So, in response to your question, I wanted InDesign to offer live control to these options, so I can send to the PDF what I really wanted in an easier way.
Again, I may be standing on a wrong supposition.
Of course our heads together will think better than one.
    Best wishes,
    Tiago Cheregati
