Last iTunes update - what went wrong?

My iPod was running smoothly until I installed the last software updater. Afterwards, iTunes would freeze when I plugged in my iPod and the computer would not recognize it. I followed all of the R's - short of restore - and that didn't work. Finally, I took a deep breath and restored the device, erasing everything.
I reinstalled the software on the iPod and things seemed to work. Except that when I tried to update/synch the iPod with iTunes, I could only do it in 200-300 song chunks. Fine, so it took a week or so to get it all back. Then, after 1 day, it starts freezing again and will not go out of "Do Not Disconnect" mode, and I could not disconnect using the "safely remove hardware" feature. I committed what appears to be the cardinal sin and disconnected the device while it said not to do so. Now I have an iPod that only shows the sad face and the link to iPod support.
I visited the store in SoHo and was told to make an appointment for a repair, but the technician said the disc may be corrupt. Doesn't sound good, especially after reading some posts here about restored iPods becoming unusable.
Has anyone that has encountered the problem had any luck or am I looking at a dead device? I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try the original CD route. If I do that, then presumably I would not update iTunes, correct (even though iTunes on the computer has been updated)?
Confused, tired of dealing with this and missed my iPod dearly during a transit strike that increased my commuting time by 400%.
Success stories sought.

Unfortunately, I still get the sad iPod and a "quarter battery" symbol when I dock it.
sorry Gordon, i saw the "do not disconnect" but missed the "sad Apple" in your original post.
iPod does not appear in iTunes or on the desktop, an exclamation point or sad iPod icon appears onscreen
let's try the restore one more time. let's try it with antivirus and antispyware switched off this time. (tracking a strange cluster of cases involving interference by those packages, and we sometimes get some joy when doing this.)
love, b

  • Latest iTunes update, what's wrong?

After I downloaded the iTunes update last night, when I try to sync my iPhone, iTunes crashes during the photo transfer point.

I was trying to sync my latest photos but couldn't do it. Your suggestion made me start by unchecking that folder, which it was able to sync, then checking it again. No crashing! It must have somehow got hung up the first time and didn't want to go any further. Thanks for the idea.

  • Macbook4,1 10.6.8 and firmware update - what went wrong?

Macbook 4,1 2008 2.4Ghz (not unibody). I recently reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled 10.6 from the Retail DVD and all seemed to go well. The MB was working fine up to that point. I then set up the MB (network, date and time, etc.) and repaired permissions.
I then checked Software Update and downloaded and installed the recommended updates to 10.6.8.
Again, all seemed to go fine. System booted and I repaired Permissions again. I went to the Apple web site, a couple of other web sites, and Software Update found another update to install: Firmware. Though I don't remember what version.
I clicked OK and it installed.
Upon reboot, it seemed to install okay.
But then I left the Macbook and it went into Sleep.
I didn't come back to it again until the next day.
When I pressed a key to wake it, I got what I now know is the screen that appears after you wake it from SAFE SLEEP. As per this Apple KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1757.
And this is where the problems started.
After the MB woke to the Safe Sleep screen, which shows the desktop a little "out of focus", the progress bars started filling in from left to right, BUT before they completed, the screen went BLACK.
And it has had a problem with black screen ever since. I can boot the MB from internal or external HD or from DVD, and it seems to boot fine. Boot chime, Apple logo, spinning wheel, then at the point where it pauses, blue screen, then goes to desktop, instead the screen goes black.
It finishes booting, but seems to go into Sleep.
I can wake it by pressing a key, but the screen either comes on and goes black again after 10 seconds, or I get the Safe Sleep wake screen, and then it goes black after 10 seconds.
And at boot or when waking the MB, the front LED flashes 5 times. There are no error beeps.
I've tried changing RAM, but problems remain.
So what's all this? Any ideas?
The display doesn't seem dead, as it works to boot and wake. The MB works fine with external monitor.
It's weird, but I can't think of anything apart from the Firmware update. The problems started right after installing it.
Unfortunately, this model of Macbook doesn't have a Firmware Restoration image to download and burn to CD. It is the ONLY Mac at this point that doesn't have this!
I called Apple support and even bought the 49 Euro Pay Per Incident service, which proved to be the same as throwing 49 Euro out the window. The only "technical" support they provided was to Reset the SMC, which you can find out about FOR FREE at the Apple website. And which I'd done anyway. I'd also reinstalled the MacOS. Don't want to beef too much, but sheesh, you've already got a Macbook that might need costly repairs, and they make you pay 49 Euro BEFORE they even ask you about the problem and what you've done to try to solve it. I'm tempted to say "ripoff". I mean, if all they can offer you is the advice to reset the SMC - which Apple offers for free at their website - then that's pretty poor service for 49 Euro, to say the least.
Apart from the wasted 49 Euro, I'm pretty peeved about the Firmware update (or so it seems) wrecking a perfectly working 2008 Macbook. I don't know how to convince Apple of this, but I'm certainly going to try.

    Thanks for the reply.
Re. the Displays setting, the Macbook display isn't recognized and mirroring isn't an available option.
I've scoured the net and the idea of replacing the PRAM battery may be something to try. I read a post by a guy with a Macbook logic board screwed up by a Firmware update, which he solved by replacing the PRAM battery, as when you disconnect it you reset the logic board.
    Which capacitor?
No luck so far with talking to Apple. I will try to get hold of someone a little more tech savvy and/or in a position of authority, as it seems that the Firmware is the culprit. Obviously a million other things could go wrong with a Macbook, but given the timing here it looks like the Firmware. Firmware updates can and occasionally do screw up a computer, as most manufacturers will warn you before you apply the update: PC makers, printer makers, etc. And they probably warn you that it's all your responsibility if anything goes wrong. But re. the Apple Firmware update:
    1) it came thru Software Update
    2) there was no warning
    3) to make things worse, there's no Firmware Restoration image that I can burn to a CD to reflash the logic board: this is the only Apple computer that doesn't have a Firmware Restoration option
I'll try to get thru to a manager and convince him/her that the firmware may have been the cause.
Do you think an authorized Apple tech might have access to some way to do a firmware restoration? Something not avaiable to mere mortals? Because if not, the only solution looks like a new logic board.

  • Updating iTunes 12.1 and get error message "The procedure entry point CMBlockBufferCopyDataBytes could not be located in the dynamic link library CoreMedia.dll - what went wrong and how to resolve this?

Updating iTunes 12.1 and get error message "The procedure entry point CMBlockBufferCopyDataBytes could not be located in the dynamic link library CoreMedia.dll". What went wrong and how to resolve this?

Entry point errors can often be fixed by deleting the offending dll, then repairing the component it is part of.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If the advice above doesn't resolve things you could try this alternate version:
    iTunes 12.1.0.71 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) - itunes64setup.exe (2015-01-28)
which is a 64-bit installer for the 32-bit version of the core application, similar to previous 64-bit releases.
Or roll back to the previous build:
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (32-bit) - iTunesSetup.exe (2014-10-16)
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (64-bit) - iTunes64Setup.exe (2014-10-16)

My 10.8.3 update did not install properly citing an 'Unknown Error'. Now, my Mail and Mac App Store aren't working. What went wrong and how do i fix it ?

I tried this and still have the same problems. If I open Address book or the Mac App Store I get the library rebuild popup and a hang. I created a fresh user and then things are better apart from the printing issue. Its clearly some 3rd party software issue but the crash logs are meningless to me. I used the excellent Etre check app from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck so I have a list of what is being loaded and can compare clean and crashed user info but as I cant work out which of the startup items, launch agents, launch daemons etc that  are causing the problem.
I have eliminated Dropbox, Mac Keeper and Witness, and it isnt related to my exterrnal LED cinema dispay or my external thunderbolt drives, or any USB devices if thats any help to anyone else. Info from Etrecheck follows -

I have been using facetime on my iphone5 for a while and after the recent IOS update, I cannot seems to use my facetime any longer. what went wrong?

'The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\Web kit.resources\inspector\Images\Spinner Inactive Selected.gif.'
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

tried synching iphone for the first time on new PC and got error followed by itunes logo and USB cable picture. No idea what went wrong and now phone is in this screen locked. please help!

I tried connecting to iTunes and neither the PC nor iTunes recognizes the device. I went through all the troubleshooting on the Apple website for this issue and nothing worked. I've reinstalled iTunes, the driver, everything and still can't get either the PC or iTunes to recognize the phone.  I don't know what else to do :-( any help or suggestions are highly appreciated!
I would hate to have lost all my info, especially contacts and calendar items since I have no idea what was backed up prior to the phone getting locked on this screen. I've been told that my only option is to go to the phone carrier and they will reset it for me, but that means it will wipe out all the info.
I hope someone has a fix other than that one.

  • What went wrong? misuse? abuse?

ive had my iphone for sometime now, bought it back in june of 2009... had some problems, it was replaced the last time...
about a week ago i had been running around from work and other places with no real time to charge my phone, it had gone dead before i got home to charge it, no big deal as this wasnt the first time... i charge it all friday night and didnt use it until sunday, went to use it sunday and it wouldnt power on... i try it again and again, still not working... i call apple support the say its the battery, they send a box and i pay $80 to have this replaced...
i wait 4 days and still hear nothing, the status hasnt been updated online, i call and they say that it wasnt the battery and that it was a hardware issue and they were going to send me a replacement phone, which was ok with me as long as the problem was solved... said the phone would be here the following day...
today i get an email stating this:
Your IPHONE 3GS has been inspected by Apple technicians, who have determined that it has been subjected to accidental damage or misuse, which is not covered by the warranty or an Apple service contract. Therefore your original product is being returned to you unrepaired. You should expect to receive it within two business days along with a letter that gives details of this assessment. Apple will send you a separate email to indicate that this service request is complete and to provide the tracking information for the shipment.
what went wrong is all i want to know, i know i didnt drop this phone at all, i know for sure it was never subject to misuse or abuse, let alone anywhere close to water to have any kind of water damage.. So now im getting my old phone back that will not power on... what am i suppose to do with that?

Call iPhone support at 800-myiphone. Let them know you sent your phone in for service and it was returned to you stating it had liquid damage. Tell them you've checked the indicators and they are not tripped. The Advisor on the phone can check the pics that were taken of your phone when it was sent it to confirm this. If this is the case they can note this in the system and override it and you can send it back in for warranty.
If they are tripped you can still send it in and have them check the internal sensors vs. the outer. Apple has recently changed their policy to warranty devices with liquid damage as long as the INTERNAL sensors are not tripped, only the externals.

  • What went wrong? can someone help?

ok here is a question,i do not know what went wrong, but one day i plug in my ipod, and you know how it say do not disconnect right?Well my will say that untill the battery goes dead, and this here is a problem i have been dealing with for a long time!! I have tried the 5 R and everthing, someone please try to help

The "Do Not Disconnect" message is perfectly normal if your iPod is manually managed, or is set to automatic sync but you have disk use enabled. It's possible some settings have been changed accidentally to give one of these.
To check which you have, connect the iPod, open iTunes, go to edit>preferences>iPod.
If you are manually managing songs you will always need to eject the iPod after each connection by clicking the small icon at the left hand source pane next to the iPod in iTunes.
If on the other hand you are automatically syncing music, uncheck disk use on the preferences page and your iPod will automatically disconnect after each update is complete.
For more information on disconnecting and the "Do Not Disconnect" message, see these:

  • What went wrong ?

    Dear all,
I`m trying to figure out what went wrong with my database.
During the higher load the users were suddenly getting DBIF_RSQL_SQL_ERROR, no matter what they wanted to do. When checking system I found many messages like:
Database error -1000 at OPC access to table REPOLOAD
    > POS(1) Too many lock requests
    > Include ??? line 0000.
    Run-time error "DBIF_REPO_SQL_ERROR" occurred

According to documentation I found error -1000:
    1000: Too many lock requests
    Explanation
There are too many locks or lock requests.
    User Request
You can try to repeat the SQL statement at a later time or cancel the transaction. If this situation occurs frequently, then the MAXLOCKS general database parameter is too small and should be increased
    Database kernel showed following messages:

So do you think it is just about MAXLOCKS parameter or also with catalog cache sizing could be wrong ?

    Hi there,
it's really just about the MAXLOCKS setting.
As you seem the "Catalog update failure"-message also points out error no. -1000.
It's the same "too many lock requests" error as before.
Having a MAXLOCKS value of 1.000.000 or even 3.000.000 is not unusual with MaxDB!

  • Fonts went Wonky, what went wrong?

    Hello,
I upgraded to iTunes 8.0.2 when the new software icon showed up a couple weeks ago, downloaded and restarted and visited the iTunes Store and all the fonts had been changed to some kind of bold symbol font. You can't read a thing. iTunes itself is fine but the store is wonky. I've got a screen grab to show. I haven't been able to figure out what went wrong, any ideas? I can't order a thing as I can't read anything!
    Thanks!

Open Font Book. Under either the File or View menu (maybe is one of the other ones) there is a option to validate your fonts. You might want to see if your fonts are okay. You should also check for duplicate fonts in your Font Book. Any questions, reply back.

  • Hard crash - what went wrong?

After many years of working with pc's I've just had my first hard crash - ever! This is also the first pc I've ever built.... The rig has been up & running for 2 weeks with zero problems. I run Seti on 2 processor threads using SetiHide, resulting in 100% activity. The CPU has the stock Intel fan & ran real hot (69°) until I upgraded the BIOS from v1.2 to v1.9. Last weekend (17/18th), I played with some overclocking, getting up to 215fsb before dropping back to standard earlier this week.
Can anyone help me diagnose what went wrong please?
CPU temp 59° full load, 40° idle
    NB temp 54°
    System 38°
    HDD 25°
System is PIV 3.2gHz/800 HT mode, BIOS v1.9, FSB set to 201, memory voltage 2.65v. Memory is Kingston approved KVR400X64C3AK2/1g in dual channel mode.
Software: WinXP Pro latest patches, McAfee AV v7.0 Enterprise, Palm Hotsync, MS ISA Firewall, pc linked to Win2k server.
Software running at the time: Outlook 2003, Setihide (2 processor mode), Musicmatch 8.2 (playing music from hdd), 2x IE6, Commence (relational dbase).
I was just working typing something in Outlook & it crashed with no warning. The PC had been on for about 10 hours.
This pc use is normal for me, nothing unusual was being done. The ONLY thing unusual was an hour or so before, I connected my APC UPS to a USB port & therefore running the UPS service. Could that cause the hard crash?
Steps taken: FSB back to 200, memory voltage back to 2.5v, unloaded UPS service & unplugged the UPS cable, unloaded Seti.
    Next step: run memtest86
This really messed up my day..
Edited CPU idle temp - because shutting SetiHide doesn't shut the Seti processes!

    Vango
I got back up & running straight away, thanks.
Running apps are listed in my first post, active windows were:
    Quote
Outlook 2003, Setihide (2 processor mode), Musicmatch 8.2 (playing music from hdd), 2x IE6, Commence (relational dbase).
I was using an Outlook new mail window doing a quote for a customer. So I was jumping between IE windows checking prices etc. At the exact point of the crash I was in Outlook typing something. Musicmatch was playing mp3s from my hard drive. Seti was running full blast. Also about an hour previously I had connected an APC 500VA Back-UPS CS to a USB port. This activated the WinXP UPS service, which was not running previously. In fact when I set up computers, I never connect the UPS to the pc - due to problems!

  • What went wrong with burning?

I wanted to burn an iTunes folder (some 1000 songs, 4GB) into a DVD disc so I highlighted the iTunes folder and clicked the button Burn Disc on bottom right corner of the iTunes window. However, only 88 songs (or 300MB) of music was burned into a DVD disc. I did it again; the same thing. For some reasons, more than 900 songs or 3.7GB of music was never burned into a DVD disc.
    What went wrong?
    Jacques

Are all of the songs you want to burn to DVD in the same playlist? Are the checkboxes in front of all the songs checked? These are the first things I would investigate.
