Last Mac Pro with Firewire 400?

The new Mac Pro's look nice, but without Firewire 400 they're useless to me... Can anyone tell me when the last Mac Pro with Firewire 400 was released?...and what the speeds were on them? Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Fair points, to be sure. I just think that, given the number of common/popular devices that are FW400 only, the removal of FW400 ports is a bit premature at this time. Like the OP said, it would be frustrating to buy a very expensive computer, and immediately have to expand in order to make use of fairly standard and not yet out-dated gear.

Sorry to disagree, but to me, expecting a company to go to the expense of engineering in a different physical port just to save someone from having to use a simple, inexpensive cable adaptor seems a bit silly.
It couldn't be that hard/expensive, given that previous models had both. Though I certainly understand the idea of reducing cost wherever possible.

If you have a little Firewire adaptor, everything should work fine. It does on my system.

  • Mac Pro Early 2008 problems with firewire 400 drives

I am having some sporadic problems with firewire 400 drives and am trying to figure out my best options going forward. System 10.5.2 has hung on me twice in the first week of use, and each time I noticed from console there were some problems accessing one or more of these drives (even though I wasn't doing any reads/writes to/from them). Just before one of the crashes, Disk Utility also had problems "seeing" these drives. My external firewire drives are:
    Maxtor OneTouch III 750GB
    Acomdata enclosure/Seagate 400GB
    LaCie d2/160GB
    LaCie w/Lightscribe DVD
I have this "cobbled" arrangement because I just upgraded from an eMac and needed these drives to manage video files, audio files, photos, etc. While I'd love to go out and buy new internals to install in my spare bays, and migrate the data to them, I will have to do that in stages as my budget is tapped out at the moment. My MacPro is the base version of the early 2008 units, with 300GB internal.
In the interim, is it worth troubleshooting firmware updates for these externals, or am I destined to continue to have firewire problems? Is there a straight-forward/inexpensive way to remove these drives from enclosures/install in drive bays with an adaptor? I believe the external hard drives are all ATA type drives.
Thanks in advance for any counsel.

I would assume that the Maxtor may be SATA. Does it have an eSATA port? Also, there were a lot of threads (in OS X Leopard forum) about those OneTouch units. Same can be said for LaCie problems.
Yes, check for firmware and configuration. In some cases, and what I do with any new OS, is to reformat all drives - gradually. Given the age of the eMac I'd guess firmware is out of date, and that the drives are formatted some time ago. While you don't have to use GUID, it is a good idea eventually, or just reformat a drive.
Don't forget to test your drives with Disk Warrior (4.1) also.
750GB WD Caviar is $139 SATA.

Are you using daisy chains? you have one FW bus shared by front and back ports. Do you have any on FW800 or using FW400 to FW800 adapter cable? PCI Express FW400 card might even help a little.
Never had trouble with OWC enclosures:

  • Connecting Canon HV30 to New Macbook pro with firewire 800

I just received new Macbook pro 2.8 that only has 9 pin firewire 800 connectivity. My previous IMac accepted my Canon HV30 HD video through 4-6 pin firewire 400 with ease, the new laptop will receive the video through 4-9 pin cable but the video color is severely distorted and unusable. Is there a problem with firewire 400 to 800 transfer compatibility?

Yeah, FW400 is compatible with FW800. Only need to find the conversion cable with the correct connectors.Try getting that first and connecting the two, to see if the Mac recognizes it and enables capture. Else visit the camera maker's site to check if they are providing Mac-specific software.

  • Mac Pro with updated OSX 10.8.2 freezes no matter what.

After installing OS X 10.8.2 my Mac Pro with 32 Gb Ram freezes within 30 minutes invariably.  Tried disconnecting all of the peripherals, unloaded Parallels 8, did a clean reload, quit all applications, nothing seems to make a difference.  Would appreciate any additional ideas.

I'm having the same issue.  Here's my log file.  I hope you can determine from this,  Thanks in advance if you can help out.

  • Why does Indesign CS4 stall on my Mac Pro with Snow Leopard as soon as I load a file?

I recently bought a Mac Pro (operating system: Snow Leopard) and installed the latest versions of Photoshop and InDesign (both CS4). I also installed those programmes on my older MacBook Pro with the former (Leopard) operating system.
Photoshop works just fine on the Mac Pro, with the machine's new Snow Leopard operating system. However, there is a problem with InDesign. Everytime I open a file, even opening a new file, the programme is stalling and I have to force-stop it.
Does anyone out there in the Adobe Community have a similar problem and could suggest a solution?
Looking thankfully forward to interesting replies!  Emil

I first installed the next to last version; the problem appeared there
(programme stalling as soon as a document is opened). I then updated to
6.04, hoping for a solution, but the problem remained unresolved. I still
cannot open a document without stalling InDesign. When installing InDesign
in my MacBook Pro (which runs Leopard), the problem does not arise. I am
able to open documents there and work as usual. The operative system was
installed by the supplier of the machine. Since I was not able to access it
(Password issues), I reinstalled it by booting the MacPro from the disquette
that was delivered together with the machine.
    HELP! I am getting desparate!

  • 2010 Mac Pro with Apple RAID card - "Drive carrier 00:03 removed"

I've got a 2010 Mac Pro with the Apple RAID card and 4 internal identical Seagate ST32000641AS 2TB drives inside.
I've never had a problem with the RAID card (either battery or in operation) except for one thing:
Almost every time I shut the machine down (which I try to do as rarely as possible), it keeps losing Drive 3, the spare.
(See RAID Utility event log snippet below.)
[I wish I could understand why this Apple RAID card keeps losing the spare across power-cycles/reboots, but I digress.]
So I just adopted it as the spare and it spawns the rebuild and many hours later, everything's fine again.
... until the last time I rebooted (Jan. 2nd).
After the usual "I lost the spare" message upon login, it began the rebuild.
But this time, about 11 1/2 hours later the rebuild stopped and RAID Utility reported "Drive carrier 00:03 removed".
Bay 3 is now missing in the Controller view.
I powered off the system last night, and left it off overnight.  Today I took all the drives out, blew the dust off and reseated them.
Same thing.  Drive 3 is still missing, and now the rebuild task aborted.
The drive bay location shouldn't matter, right?  Can I swap the Bay 3 drive with the Bay 4 drive?
I figure one of two things would happen:
    (1) It will report Bay 3 as being there but Bay 4 as being missing, same situation as is now.  Meaning the problem is in the Bay 3 spare drive.
    (2) It will report Bay 3 as being missing (despite a 'good' drive being present) and Bay 4 will be the (unattached) spare, and the RAID set will be unviable.  Meaning the problem is with the drive bay itself, not whatever drive is plugged into it.
If "Drive carrier removed" is trying to tell me the disk is bad, why do I not see any log messages about it?  I suppose a spare that never gets used could go bad from lack of use, but ... no messages at all?
Hesitant to plunk down $160 on a new spare disk if the present one isn't actually dead ...

    I was talking about this.
This looks like a RAID 5 setup without the parity to me. I would said it basically a RAID 0.
Also you metioned "I guess that previous spare must really have gone 'bad', despite having never been used! "
I wiped everything out, I selected the 3 disks and clicked on "Create RAID Set" with RAID5 selected and the "Use unassigned drives as spares" option checked.  The 3rd disk has always been marked as the spare ever since then.  You do not have a choice to create a "RAID5 setup without the parity".  If I wanted a RAID0 I would have chosen a RAID0!  raidutil now says
    % sudo raidutil list raidsetinfo
                                         Total     Avail
Raidsets      Type       Drives       Size      Size  Comments
    RS1           RAID 5     1,2,3,4    5.23TB    0.00MB  No tasks running
Every time the system would 'lose' Drive 3 on boot, I would just keep rebooting until it was 'found', and then manually re-assign the now-'floating' drive as the spare - and the RAID would rebuild.
There was never a problem until the day that prompted this post - when it would not find Drive 3 no matter what I did.  I turned the Mac Pro off for several hours until the drives had all cooled down and it still did not find the drive.  I left the machine on but unmounted the degraded volume until I got the new replacement drive.
I really don't understand what you are getting at. It's like you are trying to tell me I set it up as a 4-drive RAID5 with no parity(!) and that I was in grave danger because one of the disks was gone.  The actual RAID contents (spread across Drives 1, 2 and 4) were never in danger, unless a 2nd disk had failed while the spare was not seen by the Apple RAID card.  I wasn't too worried about that happening.

  • Can I restore a Mac Pro with a .dmg made from a 10.6.8 iMac?

    Is the above possible?
This article gives the following list of files to be removed before restoring to non-matching hardware:-
    sudo rm /Volumes/imageName/var/db/BootCache.playlist
    sudo rm /Volumes/imageName/var/db/volinfo.database
    sudo rm /Volumes/imageName/System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    sudo rm /Volumes/imageName/System/Library/Extensions.mkext
    sudo rm -r /Volumes/imageName/var/vm/swap*
However the article dates from 2004 and the days of 10.3.  In my experience the only one of these files that still exists in the same location is volinfo.database while Extensions has become a directory.
Can anyone offer an updated list of files to remove to image to non-identical hardware?  Or other advice on not having to spend 2 days or so building an entirely new image from scratch.
    Thanks in advance,

A standard retail 10.6.8 system from an iMac should work without modification on a Mac Pro. I've done this myself many times. The last Mac Pro model came with 10.6.4 installed.
    My MO is:
Repair hard drive and permissions on Source.
Clone Source to another hard drive using the Restore option of Disk Utility.
Test boot the clone to be sure it works.
Connect clone to Target machine and boot it from the clone.
Use Disk Utility's Restore to restore the clone to the Target.
Disk Utility can do this much faster than it takes to make a disc image. Furthermore, DU verifies the copies which precludes problems. Disc images on the other hand can be flakey and unreliable. They are also more easily corruptible than a clone. And, you can boot a clone. You cannot boot from a disc image. Third-party backup utilities can also be used to maintain incremental backups to the clone so you always have a current backup.

  • 2008 Apple Mac Pro with SAPPHIRE TRI-X R9 290 4GB GDDR5 OC (UEFI)

    Dear Apple,
Can you please add hardware/drivers support for the Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 GDDR5 OC (UEFI) Graphics cards to the latest Mac OS X 10.10 operating system?
We have a few Apple Mac Pro's that we installed older Radeon 7970 graphics cards in (a few years back) and now we are upgrading the graphics cards to the newest Radeon R9 290 Series cards (Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 4GB GDDR5 OC UEFI).
    We chose the Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 4GB GDDR5 OC (UEFI) (11227-00-40G) Graphics cards.
The Sapphire Graphics card can be found here:
    http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1227&pid=2091 &psn=&lid=1&leg=0
We have been trying to figure out how to get this graphics card to work with the latest OS X 10.10 Yosemite.  We are installing two Sapphire R9 290 graphics cards per machine.
We want to make sure that the OS X drivers support multiple monitors, CrossFire, as well as HDMI audio, and support GPU hardware support in the latest OS X 10.10 Yosemite.
Has anyone managed to get the Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 (SKU ID: 11227-00-40G) working in a 2008 or 2009 Apple Mac Pro?
We have 24 Apple Mac Pro's and we purchased 48 of the Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 graphics cards (to install into the Apple Mac Pro's) and we're trying to figure out how to add driver support to OS X for the Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 / Radeon R9 290 to the latest Mac OS X.
If I go into the "Graphics/Displays" Hardware section it shows that the Sapphire card (in Slot 2) is installed, but it only displays the name "Display".
The properties of the Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 graphics card are:
      Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
      Device ID: 0x67b1
      Revision ID: 0x0000
Kernel Extension Info: No Kext Loaded
Any ideas as to how to install hardware drivers to get these graphics cards to work properly in OS X 10.10 Yosemite and to enable GPU hardware support in OS X and also enable HDMI Audio?

Over a YEAR has passed, and we still can't get Apple to add the latest hardware drivers for the newest/latest AMD Graphics Cards (AMD R9 290 series).
We have contacted AMD, and Sapphire, and everyone has pointed their fingers back at Apple, and said that Apple is the only ones that can add the latest graphics drivers to their Apple OS X Operating System.
So the problem lies on Apple, and Apple refuses to update it's operating system to support the newest/latest hardware.
AMD pointed us right back to Apple and said that it's Apple's OS X Operating System, and that it's Apple's job to add and write the newest/latest graphics display drivers to their OS X operating system.
AMD says it's Apple's fault.  Sapphire says it's Apple's fault.  Apple just refuses to do anything, and ultimately it's Apple's operating system and Apple's closed-ended ecosystem that refuses to allow customers/users to upgrade their Apple Mac Pro computers to the newest/latest hardware.
In the end, I guess the only solution is to abandon Apple Mac Pro products, and just start purchasing "Microsoft Windows PC" computers that we can upgrade and that have PCIe slots that we can just swap out the graphics cards (every year) with the newest/latest graphics card hardware.

Apple seems to be a "dead end" and they don't support their high-end customers and don't seem to support Apple Mac Pro (high-end) users.  Apple only seems to be concerned about selling iPods and iPads and iPhones, and they've abandoned their HIGH-END Apple Mac Pro users that want HIGH-END workstations for professional use.
I guess if you want a high-end workstation, you have to go back to buying a Microsoft Windows PC, and start going back to using the Adobe suite, and just completely abandon Apple and Apple products all together.  (Apple is not in the business of designing or selling "high-end" products anymore).  Apple just designs low-end "overpriced" hardware, that you can't upgrade, and must toss in the garbage every other year, because you can't upgrade it.
Apple has been heading this way for years, and the newest/latest "Black Shiny Trash Can" (that is NOT upgradeable and has no upgradeable PCIe slots and no way to even upgrade the video cards) and Apple has turned into a "disposable" computer company/business that just builds "All-In-One" garbage computers (that become extremely outdated and must be thrown away every other year, because they are not upgradeable) and you can't swap out video cards using standard COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) latest Graphics Card adapters, and we can't even get the latest Mac OS X operating system to support the newest/latest graphics display hardware, it seems like our only choice (as others have stated before) is to abandon Apple products and begin moving/migrating back to Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro machines.
We can't get Apple to support their customers or update their operating system or support the newest/latest hardware in their operating system, so it seems to be a "dead end" ecosystem, and Windows 8.1 Pro and using standard PC hardware is probably a much cheaper/affordable route and it's a long-term solution, because Apple seems to come out with one nice product (every ten years) and then they don't support the product or it's users, or don't follow-up with Apple OS X operating system upgrades, and then you are stuck with very old outdated hardware because you can't even get the newest/latest drivers for the latest graphics cards/hardware.
The only solution is to boot directly into Windows 8.1 Pro, and use Windows drivers, but then why even own a Apple Mac Pro if we can't use Apple OS X and can't even use our OS X software, and the only solution is to use our Apple Mac Pro as a Windows PC?
We're really disappointed in Apple and how Apple fails to update Apple OS X and fails to support the latest graphics cards (such as the AMD R9 290 graphics card).
I think 2014 is the last year that we are going to deal with Apple.  Starting in 2015, as part of our 2015 New Year's Resolution, I guess we'll start e-baying our Apple Mac Pro equipment, or selling it (as salvage) and begin purchasing standard Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro high-end workstations, and get away from the old legacy dead-end Apple garbage hardware and dead-end Apple OS X operating system.
It shouldn't be this hard, just to get some graphics drivers released to support the latest graphics card (which has been out for over a year now).  The Radeon R9 290 graphics cards were out in mid 2013 (for over a year and a half, almost 2 years now...) and we are already coming up on 2015, and Apple still hasn't added drivers support for the R9 290 series graphics cards to it's latest Apple OS X 10.10.1 Yosemite.
It's a shame, but Apple has really gone downhill over the past few years.  Nothing but really old and outdated hardware, and even their "latest" Apple Mac Pro is 2-3 year old hardware (that Apple is marketing as "new") and it's non-upgradeable, and you can't even run/install the latest graphics cards into it.
Apple is dead-end and it's not a place for "high-end" users anymore.  I guess Apple doesn't care about it's "high-end" user market anymore, and is just interested in designing silly iPhones and iPods/iPads.

  • Mac Pro with Snow Leopard instead of Lion?

Planning to replace an aging G5 with new Mac Pro. The machine's primary usage is editing in FCP (not FCP X). Most projects are long form and I'm in the middle of one right now that will be in post for the remainder of the year. Can I get the new Mac Pro with Snow Leopard (running 10.6.8 currently) instead of Lion to avoid potential issues moving the project over?

Not if you buy it new. All of them come with Lion. However, the current Mac Pro's originally shipped with Snow Leopard, and while it's not entirely clear, it may be possible to install Snow Leopard on a new Mac Pro. There are a number of threads here discussing that but the Cliff's Notes version is that the 2010 Mac Pro requires at least 10.6.4, and the last retail version is 10.6.3 so the retail installer won't work. If you can't get Apple to send you the Snow Leopard installer that once shipped with the Mac Pro, posters have said you can't use 10.6.4+ installers specific to another recent Macs to do the job. However, there is a discussion here http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20120123175902871 which explains how that can be made to work. I haven't tried it (I got my Mac Pro while it was still shipping with SL), I don't know if it would actually work, and I don't know if it's even legal, but there it is.

  • Mac Pro with Western Digital VelociRaptor 600G ?

    Hello people,
Has anyone tried upgrading the HDDs in the Mac Pros with the new drive from WD
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=821
From what i see, as the last model, this will probably not fit natively due to a lower pin arrangement that will not match the Mac Pro SATA slots with the factory HDD sleds. Am i wrong?
If you have this drive how does it compare?
    Thanks

    Hi-
That drive of this following model is plug and play in the MP:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD6000HLHX/
A pair of them in a striped RAID are as fast as the fastest SSD.
October 5th, 2010 -- For less that the price of one 256G SSD, you can buy two 10K 600G Velociraptor HDDs. If you stripe them (RAID 0), you get the same sustained transfer speed as the SSD. But, alas, the SSD can process 14 times as many small random transfer requests per second. Then again, considering you are getting 5 times the storage of the SSD and 3 times the transactions per second of the fastest 7K HDD, it's is an interesting option for a boot volume.

  • Mac PRo with raid card shipped with drive not suitable for raid?

    Hi all,
I ordered a Mac Pro with raid card and a 1TB hard drive. The drive which came in the computer was WDC WD1001FALS which is not a hard drive rated for raid usage. On Western Digital's site they suggest using WD1002FBYS.
Is the model WD1001FALS the correct drive which Apple ships although one ordered the raid card?

The WD 640GB Blue, and WD 1TB Black are the only drive options for the mac pro; that's what you choose.
The RE3 (or FBYS) is not an option sold through apple. Buying the raid card, is not going to change the drive.
On whether to use the RE3 over the Blacks, it depends on how you will be using it. From what I've heard, the Blacks are enterprise drives themselves; basically with just a less robust firmware (no TLER). If you will have the drives on 24/7 in a raid 5, then yes, RE3 will probably be better. If not, I think the black will suffice; note the blacks are GREAT drives by themselves anyway.
The apple raid card can connect to both SATA and SAS drives internally, however most times people buying the raid card want to use it for SAS drives. There are a lot more cheaper and possibly a lot more stable options then apple's raid card if you are looking to use SATA drives.
    Check amug:
    http://www.amug.org/
A common problem with the apple raid card is the battery:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA849Z/B?mco=NDc1ODczNw
Lastly about enterprise drives, truthfully I don't see the difference really. I have enterprise drives in a 8-drive raid5 config running 24/7 as a server. 2 drives died on me after about 4 months. To top it off, they died within 10 min of each other, crushing the raid to pieces. Granted they were Seagate ES.2's, it's understandable
The boot drive of the server is a stock desktop WD drive and running 24/7. It's been running for almost 4 years straight.

  • Mac Pro with 8800 Card Availability

On Jan 21 ETA for Mac Pro with 8800 card was 2-3 weeks. Now, on Feb 2, ( 12 days later ) ETA is still 2-3 weeks.
    Anybody heard anything more definitive?

Why not just go out and buy the "stock" Mac Pro with the default ATI 2600XT card right now, and then just order the Nvidia 8800GT separately. Then when your 8800GT card finally arrives, sell the ATI card for $100 or so on eBay. All you will end up paying is about $70.00 more than the BTO option ($375 (including tax) for the 8800GT as a standalone option, minus $100 for selling the ATI 2600XT=$275 out of pocket cost vs. the $200 BTO option).
That way you can have your Mac Pro right away (as I have for the last 3 weeks), and still get my 8800GT at or around the same time as yours for only a $75.00 difference.
Having my new Mac Pro NOW is worth far more than saving $75.00. Time is $$$$$
My standalone Nvidia 8800GT is scheduled to arrive Feb 28th (according to Apple). I already have a buyer with the 1st. generation Mac Pro that will buy my ATI 2600XT when the 8800GT arrives.
Also, you might even have further delays with the BTO option if Nvidia has supply problems that could drag on into early to mid march if you hang with your current order.
